Counterfeit Hero

”Bang!” A gunshot rang out.

The bullet pierced through Feiler’s buttocks and drilled out of his back.

Feiler only trembled violently for a moment, then collapsed in Fatty’s hands.

Dropping the corpse, Fatty glanced sidelong at Selwal, whose eyes were full of pleading: ”Your army is still attacking my territory. Do you need me to teach you what to do?”

”No, no need!”

The first charge was repelled.

The second charge almost broke through, but was blocked again.

Now, it’s the Northern Alliance launching the third charge on the bandit army’s Northeast defense line.

This time, they had already thrown in all the forces they could muster. Nine Sharp Blade Companies of Blood Shadow and the eighth and ninth armored battalions, remnants of two mixed formations, and the logistical team left behind, alongside the just-arrived First and Second Mecha Groups of the Warrior with only half of their energy remaining.

Red, black, iron-gray... Amid the deafening explosions, the Northern Alliance armored group surged like a tide onto the bandit army’s defense that had been plowed by artillery.

Blood, fierce fire, filled everyone’s vision. The shock waves from explosive blasts swept everything around. In the haze of gunpowder, mechas were firing, fusion hand grenades danced in the air, missiles darted wildly, and on the muddy ground, figures engaged in desperate combat.

A red mecha, covered in mud, roared into the trenches.

Before it could steady its footing, a small bandit soldier leaped out of the ditch and pounced on it with lightning speed.

What followed was a tremendous explosion.

There was no ideological struggle, no hesitation or delay; this kind of suicide attack was shockingly straightforward!

The sky-high flames instantly devoured everything. When the light receded, the Northern Alliance Mecha that had charged onto the battlefield had lost its mechanical legs, toppling into a charred crater, unable to move.

Burning limbs, blood, and pieces of flesh rained down like raindrops, pattering into the crater. All around in the sky, tiny black debris floated, with a few fragments of blue clothing drifting leisurely in the wind. They seemed to mock the wreckage of the mecha underneath them.

”You have a mecha, I’ve got my life!”

Northern Alliance Mechas surged onto the battlefield in groups. Their energy cannons fired desperately.

Within the red and white mesh of firepower were bandit soldiers throwing themselves forward fearlessly. In the muddy trenches, their faces were too dirty to make out, but what was visible were figures firing at close range in front of the mechas or daringly pouncing forward. The most unforgettable were their bloodshot, yet bright eyes!

”Kill!”

Weiseler, whose eyes had long since turned red with slaughter, let out a wild roar from his burning throat.

Under his lead, dozens of battered black mechas stubbornly blocked the Northern Alliance’s steel tide. Cross-advancing, side-kicks, back-handed slashes, upper-step punches... All these moves combined into the most resolute word in the world — fight to the death without retreat!

Wave after wave of offensives dissipated like waves crashing on the rocks. One Northern Alliance Mecha after another fell to the ground in disbelief. Until their last breath, those Northern Alliance soldiers couldn’t understand how these wobbling bandit army mechas managed to take them down; they couldn’t even stand steadily!

Could sheer fervor defy the odds?!

A Sword, its drive system damaged, rolled on the ground, clutching a nearby Northern Alliance Mecha. After a brief sparkle around the energy cannon, a dazzling white light exploded between the two mechas, sweeping across the battlefield, consuming the two nearby Northern Alliance Mechas before disappearing into the dawn’s early light.

The light waned, and the flames from the explosion rolled into the void. A Northern Alliance Mecha spotted this gap and dashed forward. But as the battlefield’s elevation dropped into its line of sight, it saw another wobbling bandit army mecha.

Weiseler’s fingers cramped. The excruciating pain was unbearable. Blood trickled from his forehead, a wound from narrowly escaping death after the cockpit cover was smashed.

He had no thoughts left; it was all a blank. All the combat was instinctual. He didn’t know how much longer he could hold on. Perhaps, in the next second, he’d be killed in this foggy state.

Withdrawing the bloody mechanical arm from the chest of a Northern Alliance Mecha, Weiseler struggled to maintain the mecha’s balance. He looked at the time on the console... It had been an hour and forty-five minutes since Markovich gave the order.

No logic, no reason.

Holding a position with a company’s strength against forces dozens of times larger for two hours! It had to be done; impossible wasn’t an option!

Weiseler snarled, pushing the control stick, charging at the Northern Alliance Mecha ahead.

Fifteen minutes left!

But before Weiseler could plunge forward, the Northern Alliance Mecha turned and quickly retreated. Weiseler’s hand trembled, and his unbalanced mecha collapsed to the ground.

With vision blurred by blood, he saw the Northern Alliance Mechas, which had nearly pierced the defensive line, retreating like a receding tide.

What happened?

On the vast battlefield, only less than two company-sized infantry and over forty mechas from the Second Battalion’s Third Company stood dazedly, looking around the muddy terrain.

A minute passed, then two... Ten minutes later, a loud bugle call sounded from behind.

In the golden dawn, warriors wept with joy and laughed heartily!
