Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 429: Volume Five, Chapter 37: Closing the Door

”Alright then, the predecessor of the Nineteen Division First Group was also the Special Forces Group. Since you say there’s no use going onto the battlefield, let’s have a mecha fight.” Fatty said with a reckless tone, deciding to personally step onto the field to test their training results.

”The randomness of a single match is too high, no one would accept the result if they lost. How about this, three matches, best of two out of three.” Douglas spoke with precision, eliminating any chances of randomness.

”Three matches it is.” Fatty cursed inwardly but agreed promptly, ”But let’s mix it up, comprehensive combat power assessment: one one-on-one mecha fight, one ten-on-ten mecha attack and defense, and one unarmed combat between special soldiers. These basic trainings best reflect our strength.”

Seeing Fatty’s straightforwardness, Douglas hesitated momentarily and cast a glance at Newson. He himself was a graduate of the Command Department with no talent for mecha control, while Newson was a Level 9 Mecha Warrior and piloted the gold version Divine, almost undefeatable in this airspace.

Newson smiled confidently at Douglas and nodded.

According to the statistics from the Feiyang Army, with the outbreak of war, many civilian experts joined the army, significantly increasing the number of Level 9 Mecha Warriors. However, Newson had already become a Level 9 Mecha Warrior five years ago. His current hand speed had surpassed 57 movements per second, making him a strong candidate to ultimately become a top-notch Level 10 Mecha Warrior.

Except for some god-like mecha combat geniuses, Newson feared no one. In this one-on-one mecha fight, victory was assured!

As for the ten-on-ten mecha combat, the Feiyang Special Group wouldn’t lose either. It wasn’t just about the terrifying strength of their over a hundred Level 8 Mecha Warriors; even in terms of equipment, Divine of the Tenth Generation versus Warrior of the Seventh Generation, they could win with their eyes closed.

Apart from some generals, the spectator soldiers were all driven out of the central Mechanical Training Ground. Around the edges, anywhere that could accommodate people, including building windows, corridors, and even distant high-rise buildings, was crowded with onlookers. Everyone was excitedly discussing.

Considering the significant difference in mecha levels, almost no one had faith in the Leray people’s victory. Most thought they could only save face in the unarmed combat.

However, some Freedom Fighters had confidence in the bandit army. They knew the kind of training this gang of rougues went through daily. As Russell’s disciples and Freedom Front’s guides, Fatty wasn’t a hot-headed fool seeking humiliation.

Among these warriors were many who had witnessed Fatty’s unarmed combat during their time at the base. Remembering how he kicked through steel frames and sniper rifles mounted on stands sent shivers down their spines.

Since it was a friendly match, they had to keep up appearances. Douglas mingled and chatted casually with the other generals, as if this competition wasn’t sparked by conflict but was just an activity to foster friendship and collective progress.

”General Tian, what’s your event for the first match?” With Newson ready, Douglas turned to Fatty.

Fatty waved his hand generously, ”Anything goes.”

Douglas laughed, puzzled by Fatty’s confidence, then suggested, ”How about starting with the ten-on-ten mecha combat? It’s the least risky and offers a direct assessment of both sides’ combat abilities.”

”Determining an outright winner would take too long. The field is small, close-quarters combat. I suggest a ten-minute limit, and at the end, we’ll judge by the number of downed mechas.” Fatty said with a smile.

Douglas and Newson exchanged glances, suspecting Fatty intended to drag the match to a draw. But ten minutes was more than enough in this field, so Douglas cheerfully suggested, ”Let’s extend it to fifteen minutes, allowing everyone to enjoy the warriors’ performance.”

Fatty seemingly sighed quietly and reluctantly agreed, ”Alright then.”

Soon, spherical electronic data collectors floated in mid-air, as ten mechas from each side stepped onto the training ground.

The Second Armored Division naturally fielded all Divines, while the Nineteen Division surprisingly presented not the expected ragtag mechas but ten assassin special mechas, the Hunters.

Douglas frowned at Fatty’s typically simpleminded persona. If not for Divine’s higher level, they might have been at a disadvantage facing the sudden appearance of Ninth Generation mechas rather than the expected Seventh Generation ones.

Sitting beside Douglas, Newson smiled slightly, ”General, we know these mechas. Part of their technology was provided by our country. Divine versus such mechas has an overwhelming advantage.”

Douglas nodded and turned his gaze. The sound of a long bugle signal for the charge soon filled his ears, and the combat officially began.

This confrontation simulated a frontal battle on a plain, with no terrain advantages and restricted area, leaving almost no options besides direct engagement.

The ten [Divine] mechas converged into a triangular attack formation in an instant when the signal sounded. Their tactical movements were swift, clean, and executed with high precision, showcasing their exceptional training and combat experience. The lightning-speed convergence alone elicited astonished gasps from the surrounding Mechanical Warriors.

On the other hand, the ten [Hunters] stood chaotically from the moment they entered the training ground, staring blankly at the [Divine] mechas that had assembled in an instant, seemingly at a loss.

Time froze, and the entire training ground fell silent.

Until the leading [Divine] mecha took the first step, a panicked shout finally sounded in the field: ”Defensive formation, assemble!” The ten [Hunters] scrambled to form a circular defensive formation in a hurry.

However, facing an opponent already on the verge of striking, forming a formation at this time seemed too late. The experienced Feiyang Special Soldiers would never miss this fleeting opportunity. As the Leray people were still forming their formation, the Feiyang fighters pounced like arrows leaving the bowstring.

The [Divine]’s standard triangular attack formation slightly opened its wings, and the outermost mechas locked onto two panicking [Hunters] during the charge with their Mechanical Computers. As the simulated firing of the Energy Cannon occurred, the electronic data collectors gathered the damage data and transmitted it to the virtual screen of the central computer. The defense values of the two [Hunters] rapidly decreased.

”Wow!” The audience collectively exclaimed in shock.

While everyone was still staring at the towering light screen display at the edge of the training ground, stunned, the [Divine]’s entire formation had already collectively fired. Utilizing the gaps in the [Hunters]’ formation, the vanguard of the [Divine] attack formation had fiercely pierced through.

”Complete defeat!” Some Freedom Fighters favoring the Nineteen Division covered their eyes. They could not accept such an outcome; it was too humiliating.

The [Divine]’s speed, coordination, and timing of their strike seemed almost flawless to everyone. Under the terrifying explosive pressure and despair-inducing combat power, everyone felt an overwhelming sense of suffocation.

If faced with these ten mechas directly on the battlefield, the warriors questioned themselves whether their fate would be worse than that of the Leray people.

”Impressive!” The Fatty next to him became serious. Before the battle, he had fully estimated the combat power of the Feiyang people, but was still surprised by their overwhelming strength. This was the combat power of the army from a superpower, the true strength of the tenth generation [Divine]!

No flashy moves, no dazzling maneuvers, just simple and extremely fast tactical cooperation, straightforward and direct attacks aimed at the crucial points, fierce and unparalleled.

The Fatty calculated in his mind that in a full confrontation, without the influence of terrain, tactics, or command factors, the entire bandit army division could absolutely not withstand the Second Division equipped with [Heaven’s Punishment] and [Divine]! The final result would be the total annihilation of the bandit army, with at most a three-to-two casualty exchange!

Just when everyone believed the battle had no suspense, suddenly, the two [Hunters] initially locked and attacked vanished, disappearing amidst the Leray people’s waves, replaced by mechas with fully intact defense capabilities at the attacked positions.

Damage, but no destruction! Under the [Divine]’s fierce barrage, not a single [Hunter] was determined to be destroyed!

At this moment, the [Divine]’s vanguard had already surged to the front of the [Hunters]. Just as the two sides were about to engage in close combat, the observing soldiers felt their vision blur. The [Hunter] standing in the forefront, continually resisting the barrage, suddenly took a bizarre step back when faced with the oncoming [Divine].

This step, like pulling the string wrapping a spinning top, caused the chaotic [Hunters] formation to quickly rotate and remarkably, form up!

A solid classic defensive formation—the mecha circular defense formation.

And what stunned the observers the most was that the leading [Divine] rushing forward was abruptly trapped in the formation by the two [Hunters] suddenly activating on both sides!
