Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 428: Volume 5, Chapter 36: Friendship Match

”General Douglas, I wholeheartedly agree with your opinion that the troublemaker must be severely punished. You tell us how they should be punished!” Fatty said with a cold sneer, arms crossed.

Douglas said blandly, ”As far as I know, this dispute is not as it appears on the surface. In reality, it was the soldiers of the Nineteen Division who assaulted and insulted the warriors of the Second Armored Division, causing multiple injuries and damage to two training Mechas. I hope General Tian will objectively hand over the few leading instigators, and we can let the others go without further issue.”

The atmosphere on the scene suddenly grew tense with these words.

Fatty shook his head decisively, ”General Douglas, I’m afraid you don’t know the truth in this matter. What I understand is that the soldiers of the Second Division Special Group not only disobeyed regulations, occupied a training ground that belonged to the Nineteen Division without permission, disrupting training and causing trouble, but also...”

His face no longer bore a humble smile, glaring with murder in his eyes, ”they dared to flirt with Colonel Bonnie, the training instructor of the Nineteen Division, disrespecting superiors and disobeying orders. I want to hear what kind of explanation these audacious soldiers of yours have for General Douglas!”

”It’s over!” Gordon and a group of division commanders gasped, feeling troubled, as this Fatty was known for his protective nature and audacity, always biting three times even if he wasn’t in the wrong. How did these Feiyang people manage to provoke that Bonnie lady, compounded by the two serious offenses of disrespecting officers and disobeying military orders? This matter is unlikely to be resolved peacefully.

Douglas was stunned and turned his head to look at the nearby Mechanical Warriors, only to find that these subordinates were all avoiding his eyes, understanding immediately what had happened, feeling a rush of anger.

It was Captain Newson who sensed things were amiss and whispered in his ear, ”General, I just asked around, and that female officer standing nearby wasn’t wearing any rank insignia and was in ordinary training attire. Who would have known she was a colonel?”

Just then, Lieutenant Guzman, who had been beaten blue and black, couldn’t help but mock, ”Interfering with training? With your rundown Mechas, what use are they in battle? Even if you train, it’s pointless!”

Upon hearing these words, the warriors of the Second Armored Division Special Group joined in with sarcastic remarks, cold words sounding throughout. In their view, these junk [Warriors] were just trash! One [Divine] could take down ten of such Mechas.

Fatty snorted coldly, pointing at the training Mechas on the ground, ”We’re all useless? You couldn’t even beat us. What can you do?” He turned his head to glare at Douglas. ”Commander, is the Feiyang Republic composed of people who blow smoke out of their butts?”

Fatty’s tone made it hard for Douglas to keep his composure. From entering the Military Academy to now, he had never faced setbacks, becoming the commander of the Feiyang First Armored Division before the age of thirty, and then appointed as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Southeast Expeditionary Army. At a time of great war, it was the perfect opportunity to realize his ambitions.

He aspired to reach the military’s pinnacle, and now, the foundation of everything was the upcoming Mezrich Battle. As the newly appointed commander of the Mezrich Battlefield, he couldn’t tolerate any mishaps in this carefully planned operation. Therefore, before reaching Prisk, he was determined to firmly grasp control of the entire battlefield.

However, he hadn’t anticipated that at the first meeting here, someone would criticize and accuse his carefully designed battle plan. Moreover, the six elite armored divisions of Feiyang, capable of intimidating anyone, received no respect or reverence.

As the head state of the Fei Alliance and one of the only two superpowers in human society, the Feiyang Republic had long fostered a sense of arrogance, with no one daring to challenge them so directly.

But here was this Fatty who dared, and his subordinates also dared!

In today’s situation, if it had been anyone else, such a conflict wouldn’t have arisen. Ordinary soldiers would consider the consequences, their future, the allied relationships, and the bigger picture.

Even if Douglas was arrogant and the Feiyang soldiers were overbearing, who told them to be soldiers of a superpower, with immense influence? Endure a moment of peace and gain a wide horizon with a step back.

But what kind of person was this Fatty?

He was someone forced onto the battlefield, someone without a concept of authority, not good at losing advantages, bullying the weak. He wasn’t interested in becoming a general or president, nor did he care about warfare. He just wanted to survive, striking whenever he felt sufficiently safe, unperturbed by threats.

A person with no desires stands firm, and moreover, this guy had the upper hand in reason!

Douglas didn’t understand this. In his eyes, this Fatty was simply competing for power and deliberately challenging his authority.

”General Tian.” Douglas said coldly, ”You’re insulting the Feiyang soldiers. I demand that you apologize immediately and hand over the soldiers who incited trouble.”

”Quit with the act.” Fatty erupted angrily, ”I’ve made the situation very clear just now!” He pointed at Douglas, confronting him directly, ”Now, I formally request the battlefield’s Constitutional Soldiers to arrest the Second Armored Division soldiers who violated military discipline, and demand that the Second Armored Division apologize to the Nineteen Division for insulting its combat capability, and compensate all officers and soldiers for their mental distress!”

”Mental distress.” A group of division commanders sighed, recognizing Fatty as someone who always squeezed some benefit post situation.

”General Tian.” Special Group Captain Newson spoke up, ”Firstly, I believe our evaluation of the Nineteen Division as an allied force wasn’t derogatory. These Mechas are less than shabby; I don’t know what they can do on the battlefield.”

He spread his hands in disbelief, ”With a major battle looming and time being precious, I want to ask the General, isn’t it better to give the training ground for our [Divine] to undergo pre-battle training rather than wasting time on this trash?”

”What the hell!” Seeing Newson dodging the issue of who initiated the trouble, the newly arrived Rashid exploded in fury, ”What good is a Mecha? It depends on who pilots it. With your pathetic soldiers, I could crush two of them with one hand!”

”Try it then!” Lieutenant Guzman stepped forward, neck stiffened in defiance.

”Oh, these Feiyang girls are showing their might now.”

”Then try it, there’s no need for our captain to act. I’ll deal with you.”

”Still got the nerve to talk, didn’t know who was lying on the ground earlier! Little slut, you felt good, we’re exhausted!”

In the sharp-tongued insults of the Nineteen Division gangsters, soldiers from both sides faced off like fighting roosters, ready to brawl over disagreements.

”What’s with all the nonsense!” Fatty waved his hand, instantly quieting his gang of hooligans.

He gave Newson a cold smile, ”Two solutions. Either we all go to military court and sort things out—those who started it, disobeyed orders, insulted officers, will be dealt with according to military regulations: jailed if need be, disciplined accordingly, and sentenced if warranted! Or...” He said smoothly, ”Let’s give you a chance, let’s see who’s the coward!”

Newson and Douglas exchanged a glance, both exhaling with relief; they hadn’t wanted things to escalate this way. After all, if it went to military court, the first unaffected would be Guzman, who was a Level 8 Mecha Warrior, and the Special Group members involved couldn’t escape penalties, including whistling and taking advantage of the female colonel. Although the other side would also be punished for fighting, they didn’t have the count of disobeying orders.

Furthermore, the Special Group was the elite of the Second Armored Division, ranking in the top thirty domestically. To be tried in court alongside those Leray ruffians was simply not worthwhile.

Receiving Douglas’s approval, Newson smiled confidently and asked, ”What does General Tian propose for the competition?”

”The approach doesn’t matter.” Fatty arched his eyebrows, ”What matters is, what if you win, and what if you lose?”

”If we win, you admit that you’re wimps, that’s all!” Newson raised an eyebrow, entirely not believing they’d lose to these irregular units.

”Then what if we win?” Fatty didn’t get angry, responding calmly.

”A friendly competition could be good—no fight, no acquaintance.” Recognizing it as a good chance to establish authority, Douglas stepped up calmly, glancing at the dumbfounded division commanders beside him, deciding, ”I can make the decision: if you win, the Nineteen Division will become a special-level troop within the Southeast Expeditionary Army, enjoying all the privileges of a special-level troop, including personnel supplementation, material supplementation, and equipment allocation rights.”

”A gentleman’s word!” Fatty’s face beamed like a steamed bun.

”Swift action!” Douglas, full of confidence.
