Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 399: 5 volumes 23 Chapters Two Letters_3

”Oh, right.” Sitting in Gordon’s office, taking a delightful sip of tea, this vulgar person burped, fished out a letter from himself, and handed it to Gordon, saying, ”This is a personal letter from that old rascal Russell for you.”

”Oh?” Gordon was a bit curious. Russell had just sent him a secret letter not long ago, and now another one popped up. Not knowing what to expect, he opened it, and his expression turned a bit peculiar.

In the letter, Russell praised the Fatty to the skies, saying he was uniquely gifted on earth and heaven, not only praising him as naturally clever, lovely, and generous, capable of turning the tide when things looked bleak but also expressing deep regret that he felt truly inferior. Furthermore, he strongly urged Gordon to listen to Fatty’s advice and suggestions.

The phrase ”one word can prosper, one word can ruin the world” was referring to this Fatty.

A lengthy discourse, but all boiled down to one thing, whatever Fatty wants, give it to him, let him do as he pleases. Other than not assigning him any dangerous tasks, just pamper him with good food and drink, there weren’t any major demands.

This letter clearly came from a dubious source. If not for the previous letter, judging by the handwriting alone, Gordon almost got fooled because, even by comparing it to the handwriting he’d known from Russell for decades, it was indistinguishable in authenticity.

However, the content of this letter was highly suspect. Given Russell’s arrogance, it was impossible for him to call himself an incompetent fool. The previous letter mostly discussed how to cooperate, and regarding Fatty, it only gave him an eight-character evaluation: ”naturally cunning, excels in all studies.” As for his tactical thinking, it was commented as ”horse runs wild” and ”illogical.”

This had already made Gordon look at this Fatty in a new light. Has Russell ever praised anyone?

Never!

The only person who could praise himself by belittling Russell like that besides this Fatty in front of him, who else could it be? Gordon’s expression shifted unpredictably while looking at Fatty’s seemingly candid and honest face, really wanting to throw this letter right at the shameless guy’s face.

With a sly glance, the old fox smirked and asked, ”Have you seen this letter?” The envelope was sealed so tightly that as long as Fatty pretended to be sincere and said he hadn’t seen it, whatever was in the letter would be up to Gordon to dictate. By then, he could just burn the letter on the spot, hmph, dangerous tasks were plenty.

The little fox twisted his fingers shyly, smiling sheepishly, ”I’ve seen it, actually, I’m not quite as good as the teacher says.”

”Smack!” At last, a letter couldn’t resist and was smashed onto the face of this rascal.

*************

After a long talk, conditions were settled with Gordon, and the bandit army officially joined the ranks of the Gordon Independent Army.

The Independent Army now had a total of six armored divisions and sixteen fully mechanized infantry divisions. Its sphere of influence was spread across northern Mezrich, controlling important areas such as Prisk and two other small cities on the northern plains, with the Tanville Northern District being the most fiercely contested.

Although the Independent Army found itself in a difficult position compared to the other two major powers, Gordon wisely proposed democratic principles because he knew from the start he couldn’t sit on the Emperor’s throne.

These principles significantly won the support of civilians who longed for the Federation system. In many small towns and agricultural areas, the Independent Army still had considerable influence and control.

However, turning this influence and control into material and troops, and solidifying it into combat power, was harder for Gordon. The resistance organizations among the civilians or lower ethnic groups, though not provoking the Independent Army, also did not trust it.

After all, Gordon was formerly an Admiral in the Military Department, and he had done his share of suppressing rebellions, while his troops were still traditionally composed of middle to upper ethnic officers.

A force like this, caught between two major powers, with few soldiers and generals, no recruits, no supplies, in today’s increasingly city-destroying civil war within Gazalin, Gordon barely held on, feeling like he was at his wits’ end.

Therefore, Russell’s secret letter and Fatty’s arrival were like delivering coal in mid-winter for Gordon. By uniting the scattered resistance forces across Gazalin and gaining industrial support from numerous small towns filled with lower-class people, coupled with assistance from the Fei Alliance, the Independent Army, even if not becoming the greatest power, would have no problem surviving.

As for forming a joint government later, adopting a democratic federation or republic system, who would become President and other matters, they were still out of reach. For Gordon, who had long been an Admiral, the most important thing was how to survive in this war that had erupted throughout human society.

”Fatty, stop right there!” Just as Fatty stepped out of Gordon’s office, he shivered and turned around. It was Christina, his boss from whom he had benefited, with reddened eyes, presumably having waited here for him a long time.
