Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 389: Volume 5, Chapter 17, Intruder_3

If it weren’t for the support of the Gazalin 6th Space Fleet and the remnants of the Little Pyrenees local fleet, which are still loyally backing the two former Admirals of the military, they would have been defeated in ground combat long ago!

Now, in the chaotic Gazalin, the biggest problem Gordon’s troops face is supplies. Stephen is well-funded, and Reinhardt has the support of Desic, but Gordon has almost nothing.

To survive, they can only sustain war through war. If they can’t capture this massive base this time, the 91th Division will run out of ammunition and food!

Staring intently at his target, Kruze felt hesitant. This kind of pre-battle hesitation, where everything is ready but something feels off, had never occurred before. He rubbed his slightly blurry eyes, attributing his uneasy premonition to the importance of this attack.

A combat staff officer walked in, stood at attention, and saluted, saying, ”Report, division commander, all units have reported they are in the designated attack positions. The Electronic Camp is ready to launch at any time. Please give the next orders.”

Kruze checked the time—it was twenty minutes to midnight. Turning to ask the deputy division commander, Niklay, he said, ”Has there been any reaction from the base?”

Niklay, who had been closely observing the base movements, shook his head and said, ”No reaction. From the current information, they haven’t detected us. The guard posts are preparing to switch shifts.”

”Hmm.” Kruze tapped his fingers back and forth on the battlefield central information control panel, unable to shake off his uneasy feeling. After careful consideration, he told the combat staff responsible for relaying orders, ”Transmit the order: Level 1 combat readiness. The Electronic Camp should maintain information camouflage and await commands.”

”Yes, sir!” The combat staff repeated the order, turned to leave, but suddenly, another combat staff quickly walked into the temporary command center and reported, ”Division commander, an unidentified mecha has infiltrated!”

”Oh?” Kruze exchanged a glance with deputy division commander Niklay, their faces tensed. Kruze urgently asked, ”Where was it found? What type? Were there any engagements?” Their tension was understandable; a sudden infiltration of an unidentified mecha just before an attack would startle anyone.

First, the military staff’s use of the word ”infiltrated” was severe enough—it indicated the mecha was found deep within their area. Any mecha appearing at this moment definitely wasn’t theirs. Should a conflict arise, the explosion of an Energy Cannon would immediately alert the base. Moreover, why had this mecha infiltrated? Was it a patrol mecha from the base? Were there other mechas?

Any of these questions aligning with the anticipated scenario would make this surprise attack fail miserably and could threaten the entire 91th Division’s safety.

The combat staff’s face turned red with embarrassment as he said, ”It’s a Leray Federation Type III [Magic Beast] mecha. There was no firefight. We...” He hesitated, then stammered, ”It wasn’t us... it was him, who found us, three hundred meters from the division headquarters.”

Everyone present was stunned!

”What did you say?!” The hot-tempered deputy division commander Niklay practically jumped up, grabbing the unfortunate staff’s collar in anger, ”Three hundred meters from the division headquarters! And he approached us proactively? What about our guards? Where were the patrols? With so many sentries, not one detected a Second-generation mecha?”

Niklay’s words expressed everyone’s thoughts—they couldn’t believe their ears. How could this be real! The headquarters of a top-tier Gazalin armored division, infiltrated by a [Magic Beast] mecha distinctly different from theirs. If the intruder hadn’t revealed himself, the headquarters might have been taken without anyone knowing!

”Wait...” Kruze, who had been silent, suddenly asked in a surprised tone, ”Are you saying a Leray [Magic Beast] mecha proactively approached our guards?”

Hearing Kruze’s words, many suddenly recalled something: [Magic Beast]! Could it be that legendary figure?

The military staff’s answer confirmed their suspicions. ”Yes, it looks like a battered [Magic Beast].”
