Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 393: Volume 5, Chapter 20, Conquering the Fortress_2

The sounds grew quieter, gradually drowned out by the chaotic noises of artillery and explosions.

In the Combat Department, the officers of the 91st Division looked at each other, bewildered. What did the commander mean by his words? So these two fortresses weren’t actually captured by our own forces? Apart from Fatty’s men, what other friendly troops are there? Wasn’t the platoon that charged up there completely wiped out? How many more men did Fatty send up?

Minutes later, the reappearing blue symbols on the SkyNet radar and the battlefield records from the front lines answered all these questions.

Amidst a hail of bullets and shells, dense formations of Gazalin Mechas surged forward, their combat identifiers flashing red and green like menacing eyes in the night. It was the First Battalion 2nd Company, launching a frontal assault and spearheading the main attack.

On the flanks, in the temporary lines, countless energy bullets screeched like meteor showers towards the two bluish giant fortresses. The First Battalion was preparing artillery support for the Second Battalion’s charge, but against the fortress’s massive energy shield, such firepower was completely ineffective.

Red energy bullets shrieked as they struck the fortress, like a torrential rainstorm. However, the fortress’s energy shield remained stable and terrifyingly blue.

The Mechas charged forward. When the Mechas on both sides of the fortress were engaged by the other two companies of the First Battalion, the Second Battalion suddenly charged out. The Mechas’ searchlights swung erratically in the dark night, leaping from one spot to another, as the gray Mechas surged towards the fortress like a swarm of gray armored bugs.

In front of the Second Company, two dazzling red light curtains completely blocked their path. The brilliance and terror of these light curtains were unimaginable to those who had not seen them firsthand.

”Boom!” ”Boom!”

The roar of small fortress-level energy cannons echoed. Each blast shook the ground, as enormous blood-red light clusters burst forth, engulfing everything in their path, turning them to ashes without hesitation. Countless energy cannons followed behind these massive light clusters, forming an impenetrable blockade of death light across the two fortresses.

One Mecha after another fell on the charging path. In the footage from the rear recording devices, only red lights could be seen swallowing up figure after figure on the horizon. Each time a red light cluster exploded on the ground in the night, it induced an indescribable fear. The surging tide of Mechas was forcibly stopped amidst the flying debris and violent explosions!

”Retreat!” The voice of the company commander came through the screen, shouting wildly, ”Everyone, damn it, get back, the flanks are pinned down, we can’t break through without cover, get down, get down.”

The charging Mechas retreated like a tide. In just a few minutes, nearly a third of the Mechas had fallen to the fortresses’ artillery fire.

”Damn it! The blocking fire is too fierce!” A battered Mecha shouted at the others in front of the camera, its energy shield glowing a deep purple, ”The flanks need to reinforce their fire cover, otherwise we’re just sitting ducks. The Mecha’s energy shield can’t hold out!”

”Medic, medic! Where the hell are they?”

”Repair team, what the fuck are you doing, my armor’s in this state, can’t you see it? Get over here with some external armor plates, quick.”

In front of the camera, the Second Battalion’s Mechas retreated in disarray, while the Mechas responsible for long-range fire exchanged shots with the fortress from the temporary lines ahead.

”Where are those Leray people?” a voice appeared on the screen, ”I don’t see any of them.”

”Yeah, there were a few right next to me just now, where did they all go?”

”It seems they were all wiped out. A whole platoon went up with us, but I didn’t see any come back, they must all be dead!”

”No way? Their Mechas are that fragile?”

”Worse than cardboard! And they call that a Mecha? I saw some poor bastard rush just in front of me, and a shell exploded several dozen meters away, and his Mecha just caught fire, spun around, and crashed to the ground, twitching, a pile of scrap metal!”

”Shut the fuck up and get ready, the flanks are almost cleaned up. Once the fire cover starts, we’ve got to go. Who knows how many more Mechas will come out later.”

The field recorders’ footage swayed across the erratically lit battlefield, the scene chaotic. Suddenly, the flank fire intensified again, like two explosive light dragons, once again diverting the fortresses’ attention. The commander shouted, and more than two hundred Mechas that had just retreated charged out again.

The fortress clearly noticed the new charge. The two fortress cannons locked onto the charging Mechas from the start, filling the air with curses and shouts.

”Look, what is that?” a voice came through clearly, evidently from a warrior in the electronic Mecha tasked with battlefield observation.

”Where?” came the voice from the warrior operating the field recorder.

”Over there, by the fortress!”

The camera quickly focused on the brightly glowing fortress, and faintly, over a hundred broken Mechas appeared, ghost-like, just thirty meters from the fortress. They were charging, their madness overwhelming even the light clusters from the fortress cannons.

”Fuck!” the warrior recording the field shouted, ”It’s those Leray people, damn, they didn’t retreat earlier, just played dead!”

”That fortress is done for!” a warrior beside him concluded. From the footage, the fortress that had been holding back the Second Battalion’s firepower was caught off guard. Before their guns could suppress the charge, the fierce and frenzied Leray Mechas had already reached the fortress.

Minutes later, with two resounding ”Boom!” ”Boom!” the two fortresses were completely destroyed. All the Mechas in the First Battalion’s line jumped up, howling and yelling, advancing deeper.

The battlefield recorder’s footage was frozen, and faintly, the discussion among several warriors in the electronic Mecha could be heard, ”Damn, that works? Those Leray bastards are cunning!”

”Cunning? You go lie there yourself!...”

The voices ceased.

The 91st Division’s officers were stunned by everything they saw, their jaws hanging open. For a moment, the entire Combat Department was silent as death.

Only a chubby Fatty wiped his sweat away, still wearing an innocent look, laughing apologetically, ”Just lucky, just lucky.”

Bonnie smiled bitterly, what kind of person, leads what kind of soldiers!
