Undead Mage from a Cell

Chapter 39: Chapter 37: Westminster Cathedral

Early the next morning, Gu Xi, feeling a bit sore in the waist and back, slowly got out of bed.

A rare deep sleep left Gu Xi in relatively good spirits.

However, for some unknown reason, his waist always felt a bit sore.

But fortunately, a shilling had its worth. Although it was a third-class room, it had everything it should have; even Gu Xi’s clothes had been ironed. Now Gu Xi could finally avoid wearing damp clothes.

Putting on his clothes, Gu Xi picked up the jerky placed on the bedside table, bit into it, and walked out of the room.

As he descended the stairs, the bartender who was cleaning behind the counter looked up.

”Guest, how did you sleep last night? Do you need me to hold your room for you?”

”I slept well, but I want to change rooms tonight.”

As Gu Xi spoke, he laid a shilling on the counter.

The bartender caught on instantly, ”Alright, I’ll arrange a clean room for you tonight.”

He also pushed a key towards Gu Xi.

Gu Xi accepted the key and casually asked, ”By the way, do you know how to get to Westminster Cathedral?”

”What are you going there for? That’s a cemetery for the wealthy.”

The bartender asked, puzzled.

”There was a church in Victoria City before, and I don’t know when it got demolished. My ancestor was buried in the graveyard behind the church.

When the church was demolished, nobody knows where the bodies got relocated. The only certainty is that a knight’s corpse from that church was moved to Westminster Cathedral.

So I want to go have a look and see if there’s any record of relocating graves there.”

”I see.” Upon hearing Gu Xi’s explanation, the bartender didn’t ask further.

Although Britons don’t pay much attention to such matters, no one would care particularly either.

Gu Xi had this need, so he naturally wouldn’t persuade him otherwise, ”The Westminster Cathedral you want to go to is just a bit behind the upper town level, not far from here. You go out from here, take the No. 19 steam bus, and get off at Mianawei Station.

Westminster Cathedral is huge; you’ll see it at first glance when you get off.”

”Thanks.”

Having gotten the directions, Gu Xi didn’t linger much. Chewing on the jerky, he headed out.

Once outside the tavern, Gu Xi looked up at the sky. Victoria City was still as foggy as it was yesterday; without a lamp, visibility was no more than thirty meters.

At night, visibility would be even lower, and even under a street lamp, you could only see a distance of about seven or eight meters around you. Anything further and you wouldn’t be able to tell if it was male or female, or even if there was anyone at all.

Thus, the various vehicles on the road, whether horse-drawn carriages or steam locomotives, would constantly ring their bells when moving.

If you weren’t careful and got hit, that was just sheer bad luck.

While waiting for the bus, Gu Xi heard the distinctive sound of the No. 19 steam bus.

”Ding~ Doo-doo~ Ding!”

Then a giant headlight appeared in the white fog. In the steam and the fog, Gu Xi could clearly see the number 19 written on the headlight.

”It’s here!”

Just as Gu Xi was about to step forward to board the bus, he suddenly sensed faint footsteps behind him.

Having been wary of the ubiquitous thieves in Victoria City, Gu Xi didn’t think twice, turning around and thrusting the jerky in his mouth into the thief’s hand.

The thief initially intended to steal money from Gu Xi’s pocket but didn’t expect Gu Xi to suddenly turn back and catch him with the jerky, leaving him puzzled.

At this moment, Gu Xi pointed at him.

Secondary Corpse Burst!

Then quickly jumped onto the No. 19 steam bus.

Before the thief could react, the jerky in his hand exploded with a bang.

The explosion wasn’t particularly powerful, about the force of a small firecracker.

However, it was still an explosion, and the thief was still clutching the jerky.

The blast rendered the thief’s hand useless on the spot.

Stunned by the explosion, the thief couldn’t even think about chasing Gu Xi, only able to watch as Gu Xi jumped onto the No. 19 steam bus and left.

Unaware that he had caught someone’s attention, Gu Xi took out another piece of jerky from his pocket and bit into it.

Gu Xi found that this kind of jerky was actually quite good. Not only could it be eaten, but its explosive power was also quite decent for an attack.

Most importantly, it was cheap, and throwing jerky was much easier than throwing flying knives.

Sometimes, this jerky could even be deadly when thrown.

Besides, carrying jerky on the road was much more reasonable than carrying a whole set of flying knives.

Satisfied with his choice, Gu Xi happily contemplated how to make the most of this newfound discovery.

Perhaps roast some jerky to see if using Corpse Burst would add the power of flame.

Or perhaps coat the jerky with some poison?

As Gu Xi pondered these things and chewed on the jerky, he unknowingly realized that the No. 19 steam bus had reached Victoria Bridge.

As the bus went onto the bridge, Gu Xi felt something sweep over him.

Just as Gu Xi wanted to stand up and resist, the sensation disappeared as quickly as it came.

Sweating from fright, Gu Xi understood that this was the Victoria official’s professionals monitoring the control over Victoria City.

Especially vehicles entering or exiting Victoria Bridge were under their supervision.

All professionals knew about this, but none could resist it.

Being an outsider, Gu Xi was ignorant of Victoria City’s situation, so it was only natural for him to be frightened.

Fortunately, this monitoring was just a cursory sweep, with no intent to closely track all professionals.

After passing Victoria Bridge, the surveillance disappeared, and Gu Xi was able to relax, finding a seat to sit down.

The rest of the journey went smoothly. Sitting by the window, Gu Xi observed that Victoria City had grown significantly after so many years of construction.

Although the steam bus moved quickly, it still took about an hour or so to reach Gu Xi’s destination.

Mianawei Station.

The reason for knowing he had arrived was because, after turning a corner, a tall church appeared directly in front of the steam bus.

Without needing anyone to point it out, Gu Xi knew this church was his destination, Westminster Cathedral.

However, looking at Westminster Cathedral from afar, Gu Xi felt that this task might not go as smoothly as expected.

Others might not see it, but Gu Xi could see at least three pure white auras radiating outward from the center of the Westminster Cathedral.

This indicated individuals who had reached beyond level 20 in power.

In other words, inside this cathedral, there were at least three professionals above level 20.

And they were aligned with the Holy Light Element.
