Chapter 1186: Chapter 15: Breakout (Part 2)_4

He refused to believe that under this kind of attack, those Chuckna people on the hill could still hold the line! As long as they took the hill, they could wash away the humiliation!

”Charge! Die in service of the eternal cause of His Majesty the Jiepeng Emperor!”

Corleone shook off the guards and charged uphill. Closer, closer—Deputy Battalion Commander Bernasera, who was leading the assault, was already less than thirty-five meters from the position!

”Bang!”

The first gunshot rang out from the position.

A Jiepeng private’s frenzied roar cut off abruptly. He stood ramrod straight for a heartbeat, then toppled backwards. In the center of his brow, a bloody, mangled bullet hole bloomed like a flower of blood.

Gunfire broke out. On the position, rifles and energy machine guns began to roar.

Belts of bullets wove into a crisscrossing web of light, wantonly reaping the lives of the Jiepeng Soldiers. Fusion Hand Grenades flew in all directions, suddenly flaring among the crowd, white light exploding outward and devouring everything around. The shockwaves hurled severed limbs into the air; they tumbled, then crashed down into the dust, onto the treetops.

The swarming Jiepeng Soldiers went down in rows like wheat cut by a scythe. But the assault wave, already driven into madness, did not halt because of this.

These Jiepeng Soldiers in gray uniforms neither slowed their steps nor their howls. Panting, they threw themselves at the position with everything they had, firing back as they ran.

Rifle and machine-gun rounds chewed into the dirt in front of the position, punching out dense rows of bullet holes as smoke and dust billowed. The Jiepeng Soldiers in charge of heavy fire support hefted their Portable Missile launchers and small-caliber Energy Cannons, pouring out unrestricted suppressive fire. Curving missile exhaust trails and straight beams of Energy Cannon light crossed and intertwined.

On the mountainside at the flank of the position, over two hundred Chuckna Prisoners were sprinting desperately toward the trenches behind the little kid, while staring fixedly at the position whose angle shifted with the slope of the mountain. Everyone’s lips were pressed tight, their faces iron-hard.

They hadn’t expected the Jiepeng people to be this crazy, nor had they expected that the position the little boy had brought them to would have barely more than a dozen people still able to fight.

They could see the Chuckna Warriors lying at the forward edge of the position, firing from their shooting nests. They knew that every second their comrades up there were dancing on the knife-edge of death. The Jiepeng people were barely twenty or thirty meters from the front line of the position, yet they themselves still had sixty or seventy meters to go before reaching the Mecha trench at the rear!

The Jiepeng people were getting closer and closer to the position—thirty meters, twenty-five, twenty. As the sound of their pounding footsteps drew near, the prisoners’ hearts thundered in their chests.

A chubby figure suddenly popped his head out from the position and raised his gun to fire. This was already the fifth time the Chuckna Warriors on the slope had seen this figure. The previous four times, he had killed at least six Jiepeng Soldiers!

One shot, two shots, three shots, four!

Three Jiepeng Soldiers at the very front suddenly buckled and collapsed almost in unison. Another Jiepeng Soldier who had a Fusion Hand Grenade in his hand and was just swinging his arm to throw it forward jerked violently; the grenade slipped weakly from his fingers, dropped to the ground, and detonated with a roar. Within a radius of twenty meters around him, everything was scorched black.

The chubby figure ducked back down. Almost the instant he pulled his head in, a storm of Jiepeng fire engulfed the lip of his foxhole and the wall behind him.

”A master!” a Chuckna Warrior said, punching the air hard. Before his fist had even completed its arc, he saw that Fatty had moved three to five steps to the side. Fatty popped his head up again—another shot.

The prisoners watched, blood surging, eyes almost bursting. That madman was practically pressing his head against the enemy’s gun muzzles to trade shots.

This bullet hit dead center between the brows of a Jiepeng Captain with flawless precision. The young Jiepeng Captain stared in disbelief as he slowly fell to his knees. When his head slammed into the billowing dust, the prisoners saw Fatty let out a great roar; then the two Chuckna Warriors at the adjacent firing points scrambled up and ran with him toward the other end of the position!

They had barely left when a missile slammed into their former spot, sending earth geysering skyward!

Half of the charging Jiepeng Soldiers were already lying dead in front of the position, yet the fire from the trenches hadn’t weakened in the slightest.

The interlocking fire net still lashed out from every angle, endlessly reaping Jiepeng lives and pinning that gray wave of assault at the twenty-meter line!

At the twenty-meter mark from the position, a solid row of Jiepeng Soldiers had already fallen. More bodies were still dropping along that line.

A dozen-odd men were actually holding the Jiepeng people short of taking even a single step past the ”no-go” line.

Anthony panted, eyes shining. ”Beautifully done!”

”They’re incredible!” a Major beside Anthony muttered. ”This kind of fire net construction, this kind of repositioning on the line—it’s damn near perfect!”

Amid the heartfelt praise of the two officers, the warriors’ heartbeats grew steadier and steadier. They even had the illusion that they might not need to join the battle at all—that bunch up there could finish the enemy by themselves!

The position loomed closer and closer; the Mecha trench was now right in front of them.

Suddenly, the warriors heard the heavy footfalls of a Mecha running up behind them. They turned and saw Taixing’s head—missing a chunk—appear in their field of vision.

In front of the position, the enemy began a berserk final charge.

Bernasera was howling wildly as he threw himself at the position. At least ten Jiepeng Soldiers clustered around him. Their ferocious fire was so intense that the Chuckna Warriors in the trenches couldn’t lift their heads.

Ten meters, five meters... Under Bernasera’s lead, the Jiepeng Soldiers surged forward along the entire front, on the verge of spilling into the trenches.

”Bang!” A gunshot.

Bernasera suddenly froze in place as if a spell had locked his body.

He slowly lowered his head and looked at his chest. A bloody hole was spraying crimson in pulsing jets.

His Adam’s apple jerked violently, and thick, viscous blood foam welled from the corner of his mouth.

The world spun wildly before his eyes.

As Bernasera fell, he suddenly heard a roar.

In his spinning field of vision, Chuckna people in the trenches appeared, along with those blue-uniformed soldiers. Like tigers bursting from a cage, they all leapt out of the trench.

They fired at point-blank range at the Jiepeng Soldiers in front of them; once they tangled together, they went at each other with Bayonets fixed to their guns.

Bernasera’s body was convulsing, his legs weakly scrabbling at the muddy ground.

A Fatty was rampaging through the cluster of Jiepeng Soldiers, Unhindered Stride, as if no one else existed. His Bayonet work was clean and efficient, his strength great and his speed blistering. The three Jiepeng Soldiers who had swarmed him were skewered and stabbed down in the blink of an eye.

When another Jiepeng Soldier in the distance tried to raise his gun and shoot Fatty, ignoring the fact that there were other Jiepeng Soldiers behind him, Fatty’s gun had already gone off. Standing in place, he calmly picked off Jiepeng people around him with pinpoint shots.

A figure pitched forward, landing right in front of Bernasera. Bernasera knew this man well—it was Corleone. At this moment, the young low-ranking noble’s face was twisted into a strange expression, blocking most of Bernasera’s view.

The light grew dimmer and dimmer; his body grew colder and colder.

Bernasera heard the footsteps of a Mecha and the erupting cheers of the Chuckna people. The surviving Jiepeng people were starting to flee. Bernasera couldn’t understand how a completely reckless charge by a hundred and sixty men had failed to break through the enemy’s fire net. He couldn’t understand how those men had still managed, in the end, to leap out of the trenches and launch a counterattack.

That pale, chubby Fatty who looked so easy to bully yet fought like he’d been pumped full of stimulants—who was he?

He couldn’t figure it out. Eyes wide open, he stopped thinking altogether.
