Counterfeit Hero

The cockpit of Flowing Light’s mecha opened, and Fatty jumped down with a dejected look on his face. Looking at the scientists who had gathered around, he smiled bitterly and said, ”Out of energy.”

”Out of energy?” The scientists were all stunned for a moment. This experimental mecha still had at least half a box of solid compressed energy blocks! You know, one box of energy could sustain high-load marches for tens of thousands of kilometers, can supply a thousand rounds of energy cannon fire, and support continuous high-intensity combat for seventy-two hours straight. Half a box of energy should last for at least thirty hours, shouldn’t it?

However, how much time had passed? Less than an hour! The energy’s already gone?

Belchi rushed to the mecha, pulled open the energy cover with one hand, pressed the button, and with a hiss, the energy box slowly moved out from the mecha. Everyone leaned in to look, but the box inside the mecha was completely empty except for the dozen or so miniature mechanical clamps used to transport solid energy blocks. The energy liquefier was also empty.

”This...” Everyone looked at each other, feeling a bit dejected. When they were designing it, they knew that the magnetic instrument and the specialized engine consumed a lot of energy, and they were mentally prepared for it, but they never imagined the consumption would be this terrifying.

A mecha without energy is nothing more than a pile of scrap metal, or a living target! No matter how fast your hand speed is, it won’t do any good! Half a box of energy lasted less than forty minutes; on the battlefield, after one or two hours, wouldn’t it be easy prey?

”Speak!” Weii Jianshan didn’t care about the dejected scientists; he grabbed Fatty and said, ”Hurry up and tell me, what’s going on here?”

Fatty chuckled, briefly explaining the principle and function of the magnetic instrument.

Weii Jianshan’s eyes widened as he listened. He was the first to directly experience the force field’s effects, so he understood well what this thing meant.

”You made a two hundred kilometer raid just for this?” Weii Jianshan finally understood.

Fatty nodded vigorously.

”You provoked me just to test this thing?” Weii Jianshan’s expression darkened.

”So what!” Fatty glared, ”Going to bite me?”

The two of them stared at each other for a long time; Weii Jianshan angrily said, ”My reputation is ruined, surely you should give me something in return?”

”Want me to install this thing on your mecha too?” Fatty, a master of psychology, knew exactly what Weii Jianshan was thinking, raising an eyebrow.

Weii Jianshan nodded seriously.

”No way!” The rascal said with a face as unemotional as possible, ”This thing consumes too much energy, it’s not ready for application yet.”

”Bah!” Weii Jianshan shouted in rage, grabbing Fatty by the collar, ”They may not know, but I do! This device’s effect lasts only a few seconds. If you don’t attack, half a box of energy could cause me to fail dozens of times; a full box could lead me to die a hundred times if attacked proactively.”

The scientists’ eyes suddenly lit up. On the battlefield, a crucial moment, an opportunity, once is enough!

Fatty, timid before tougher opponents, saw Weii Jianshan getting angry and softened, lowering his head, ”Alright, I’ll install it for you first, how’s that?”

Amidst the noisy commotion, Markovich appeared beside Fatty and whispered.

”Colonel Tian.”

”What’s up?” Fatty asked, looking at the serious Markovich.

The crowd naturally parted.

Markovich reported, ”Two Suss Armored Groups from the Northern Commerce Alliance have arrived at the Navarre Plain, 230 kilometers away. They are less than sixty kilometers from our Pingqi Ridge Defense Line. The antenna has already detected a large number of free signals from the enemy; based on density analysis, they have at least two platoons of electronic mechas.”

”Two platoons?” Fatty frowned deeply.

He understood that this time, he was facing no longer the naive freedom fighters who knew nothing about modern warfare. Those preparing to attack were the Suss Empire... that nation with eighty million regular troops, constantly organizing and equipping for a century, ready to ignite a world war at any time.
