Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 1149: Chapter 8: Arrival at Canglang Star (Part 2)

Margaret didn’t know how many people initially held similar thoughts, nor how many people now still regard this hero with disdain. Be it Feiyang, Chuckna, or Ryan, these countries with territories several or even dozens of times larger than Feiyang have ample reason to sneer at this manufactured counterfeit hero.

Apart from Leray itself, no other country’s media would spend any ink on this Fatty. As the propaganda leaders of their own countries during the war, what they care about most are the lists of heroes provided by the Ministry of Defense, the victories that can uplift spirits, and their own lives!

This is a war that has swept across humanity’s billions of population.

Not everyone is interested in far-off Leray or the exile Mars. Even among the generals from different countries at the command post, how many know what this Fatty has done in these four years of war? How many truly understand the war happening in Leray?

But I know.

Margaret sat down on the chair. The Fatty opposite her lit a cigarette before her eyes. The weak flame illuminated his face.

Margaret turned her head away, observing carefully with her side glance.

Only in this dim light does the Fatty, having shed his armor, appear most authentic. The expression on his face is not as cheeky and smiling as I usually see. Even though it’s just plain and silent, I can still see an obstinacy, a nonchalance, and a hint of confusion and weariness on his face.

Yes, no matter who it is, on the frontline, behind enemy lines, in the exiled land far from home, having fought for four years would have such an expression. As tough as the Fatty is, he’s still flesh and blood. Yet, he’s been stubbornly persevering. Even now, Leray effectively only has a battered Star Domain left and a military less than one-tenth of what it was before!

From this dim, somewhat blurry figure, what did I see?

It is as if countless rays of light and images appear behind this figure... Fire, explosions, green fields, factories, towns, Mecha... That country called Leray, it’s the Leray youth charging forward on the battlefield, the battleships engaging in space warfare, the people living in cities resembling ruins.

In comparison, the vast Feiyang Fleet, the proud Feiyang Generals, and the astute Feiyang politicians seem so insignificant.

The Feiyang Republic, in terms of comprehensive power, is roughly fifteen times the Leray Federation. However, today’s Feiyang is no longer the hero era of thirty years ago. One Feiyang definitely hasn’t played the role of fifteen Leray Federations. If there were fifteen Leray Federations, perhaps this war would have already reached its end!

Now, this figure just sits quietly before me. Within the next dozen hours, he will take a few Mech Knights into Canglang Star, surrounded by heavy troops, to carry out an almost impossible mission.

This guy, is he a fool or a madman?

He said he wants to rescue his woman, is this true? If I were trapped on Canglang Star...

Margaret was upset by the sudden thought rising in her heart. She had never thought that after seeing winning this war as the only and last bloom of her life, she would because of a man, rise such illogical speculative thoughts. Fatty going to save his woman, what does it have to do with me?

How has the battle evolved, what is happening at the command post, can Resk still hold up, have the emergency reinforcement troops completed their gathering, Grandfather Hastings’s health...

Margaret quickly walked to the floor-to-ceiling porthole. It was pitch black outside. During space jumps, no cosmic scenery is visible. On the transparent window, there is only her slender silhouette.

Thoughts spun wildly like a carousel in the night, colorful yet always returning to the starting point.

”You’ll come back alive, right?” Margaret’s voice was like a night creek.

”Bah!” Fatty angrily retorted, ”I’ll live to a ripe old age!”

The porthole gradually brightened, a star stretched by visual distortion finally stabilized its shape, round and red like a heated ping-pong ball. The battleship had completed its space jump. The engines activated, and the room’s lights became bright again. Hearing Fatty’s annoyed voice, Margaret’s mouth involuntarily drew a slight amused arc.

She casually turned and walked to the doorway: ”Would you see me off?”

Fatty sucked on his cigarette, squinting, waved his hand impatiently. His eyes, however, followed Margaret’s gentle and graceful body rhythmically moving up and down.

”Dead Fatty!” Margaret angrily closed the door and walked towards the shuttle cabin, pondering whether to call Qian Bolin, McKinley, and Chuckna’s Rabinowski. Also, whether Grandfather Hastings’s power in hand ought to change a thought, first go to Resk to temper.

”How much longer can we hold out?”

Marshal Chuckna, Li Cunxin, sat majestically in the rudimentary underground command post, just as he sat in the Chuckna Military Department. Though nearing seventy, Li Cunxin’s physique remained tall and solid, his face has quite a few wrinkles and a long scar. Paired with the hair that seems to move without wind, it exuded a natural aura of authority.
