Gene Unlocking: I Evolve Every Day

Chapter 216: Chapter 199: Ancestor Appears

The next day, a little past five in the afternoon.

Lu Li, Zhang Guocheng, Xiaolin, and Old Wu were picked up by people sent by Johnny Smith to the competition site.

As for Wang Yu and the others, because there was a limit on the number of ”medical teams” a contestant could bring, they couldn’t all go.

The journey to the site was strictly confidential. As soon as Lu Li, Zhang Guocheng, Xiaolin, and Old Wu got in the car, they were required to wear black hoods, and even their ears were plugged, as if they were kidnapped.

However, this didn’t trouble Lu Li.

Even with a black hood and earplugs, he could still use his supernatural ability to know the direction of the car.

It wasn’t far from Los Angeles City to Santa Monica, about twenty-five kilometers.

After a roughly twenty-five-minute drive, they reached their destination.

It was very close to the seaside.

Lu Li, Zhang Guocheng, and the others arrived at the underground of an abandoned amusement park.

As soon as they entered, Lu Li saw something inside resembling an octagon cage fighting ring.

The difference was that this octagonal cage was sealed even at the top, entirely sealed with solid steel bars.

With his keen sense of smell, Lu Li could detect a strong scent of blood on what seemed to be a clean ring.

Obviously, many people had died here.

Around the octagonal cage, there were many seats resembling bar booths.

Perhaps because it was still early, only about a dozen or twenty people were there drinking.

Looking up, Lu Li noticed there were many private boxes on the second floor, presumably for the VIPs.

After taking just a few steps inside, he was near a place similar to a bar counter.

He noticed something next to him that resembled a bulletin board.

It not only displayed headshots and names of many contestants but also had various odds written below.

Lu Li leaned in for a closer look.

He was listed on the last row.

He was scheduled for the second match tonight.

His opponent looked like a rather fierce black bald man.

The odds for himself and this man winning were 1.9 and 1.03, respectively.

In other words, betting on himself to win could net ninety US Dollars from a hundred-dollar bet.

Betting on the black bald man to win would only yield a meager three dollars from a hundred-dollar bet.

The odds clearly showed how little confidence there was in him.

Not just for the match at hand.

Lu Li also saw his championship odds for tonight, an astonishing 365 to 1.

The highest championship odds were for a white man named Louis, at just 1.35.

Perhaps seeing Lu Li looking at the odds?

Johnny Smith glanced over and said, ”These are the fixed opening odds. Once the match officially starts, they’ll continuously fluctuate based on the situation.”

Lu Li blinked and said, ”What if I want to bet on myself to win?”

Johnny Smith said, ”See that short guy behind the bar?”

Lu Li looked over and saw a plump white middle-aged man sitting there.

He nodded, ”I see him.”

Johnny Smith said, ”For anything under a hundred thousand dollars, go to him, but you must have cash.”

Lu Li asked, ”What about above a hundred thousand dollars?”

Johnny Smith took out his phone, opened a website, and said, ”Use this website. Here you can bet up to a million dollars. This site not only accepts bets but also streams live competitions. For anything over a million dollars, you’ll need to negotiate with the behind-the-scenes boss. Some top-level tycoons place bets in the tens of millions. For top-tier challenges, the market can reach several billion dollars.”

Negotiating with the behind-the-scenes boss was too troublesome.

And there was also a risk of them tracking his information.

Lu Li thought for a moment, turned to Zhang Guocheng, and said, ”Help me go to the website Johnny mentioned and bet a million dollars on me winning the championship tonight. You spot me the money first, and I’ll pay you back after the match ends.”

Zhang Guocheng immediately said, ”Sure, I’ll have someone do it right away.”

As he spoke, Zhang Guocheng borrowed a phone from Johnny Smith to make the call.

Yes, participants and medical teams entering here weren’t allowed to bring any communication devices.

During Zhang Guocheng’s call, Johnny Smith kept an eye on him and required him to speak in English to ensure he wasn’t tipping anyone off.

Before long, the call was finished.

Johnny Smith looked at Lu Li with a peculiar expression, ”You’re actually betting a million dollars on yourself to win the championship tonight?”

Lu Li shrugged, ”Why not?”

”It’s possible, I suppose.” Johnny Smith chuckled, ”But do you really have the ability to win the championship? Besides, if you want to win tonight’s championship, it’s not just one or two matches you’ll need to go through. Even if you’re great at boxing, do you have that much stamina?”

Lu Li inquired, ”How many matches would I need to win?”

Johnny Smith carefully explained the advancement rules to Lu Li.

Generally speaking, besides the champion tier, there are three other tiers below.

The first tier, beginner fighters, with appearance fees ranging from three thousand to ten thousand US Dollars, and a mortality rate of twenty percent.

If you can consecutively defeat five opponents, you qualify to challenge the next level of fighters.

The second tier, intermediate fighters, with appearance fees ranging from thirty thousand to a hundred thousand US Dollars, and a fifty percent mortality rate, also requiring five consecutive victories to qualify to challenge the next level of fighters.

The third tier is the highest below champion tier, advanced fighters, with a terrifying mortality rate of seventy percent.

Of course, corresponding to this, the appearance fees are also higher, ranging between two hundred thousand and five hundred thousand US Dollars.

If you consecutively win ten matches, you successfully qualify for a champion challenge.
