Gene Unlocking: I Evolve Every Day

Chapter 215: Chapter 198: Entering the Boxing Tournament

Los Angeles, inside the hotel room.

Lu Li sat on the sofa, asking Zhang Guocheng and others to find out where Julia Giannini was.

Zhang Guocheng showed a troubled expression and said, ”Mr. Lu, it’s a bit difficult to find Julia Giannini. Her family is part of the California Consortium, and she’s the second in line to inherit the family. She usually keeps a low profile and rarely appears in public. We don’t know where she lives.”

Lu Li said speechlessly, ”Then how did you know she went to Atlantic City to gamble before?”

”It was quite a coincidence.” Xiaolin took over the conversation and explained, ”Initially we only knew Jin Zhouzhou was hiding in Southern California, not in which city. Later, by chance, we found out he was hiding in Los Angeles. After an in-depth investigation, we discovered he was under the protection of California Eighteenth Street. Through layer upon layer of strict investigation, we finally found out that the biggest financial backer behind California Eighteenth Street is Julia Giannini.”

Lu Li knew Xiaolin was telling the backstory, which might relate to the success or failure of the mission, so he listened carefully.

Xiaolin continued, ”Since then, in addition to trying every means to monitor the main members of California Eighteenth Street, we also started paying attention to Julia Giannini. She has three private jets parked at three different airports, namely Los Angeles International Airport, Long Beach Airport, and Burbank Airport. Therefore, we stationed people at these three airports, so that once she boards a plane, we can roughly know her whereabouts. We found out she went to Atlantic City to gamble in this way.”

Lu Li thought to himself that he just bought a private jet, yet Julia Giannini actually had three?

He could roughly guess why the other party had three private jets, most likely out of fear of death, afraid that someone would anticipate her movements and take action.

Zhang Guocheng made a sound of agreement and said, ”So unless she travels, we fundamentally don’t know where she lives. It’s not that we haven’t tried tracking her, but she has a very skilled counter-surveillance bodyguard team. We don’t have as many people in the Ugly Country, so every time we try to follow her, they easily shake us off.”

Lu Li frowned, ”So if Julia Giannini doesn’t travel, you guys really have no way to find out her movements in the short term?”

Among the group, a middle-aged man in his forties named Old Wu sighed, ”That’s indeed the case.”

Unable to see Julia Giannini.

No matter how awesome the superior life pheromone is, it’s of no use.

Lu Li couldn’t help feeling a bit helpless. Is there really no way?

Actually, it didn’t matter whether he saw Julia Giannini or not. It wasn’t like he had to get close to her.

What Lu Li cared about was that if he helped Zhang Guocheng and others solve this issue, he could not only achieve financial freedom but also gain a lot of intangible resource support.

This kind of intangible resource support couldn’t be bought with any amount of money.

For example, if someday he needs deep evolution but can’t acquire enough energy himself, Zhang Guocheng might be able to help him big time.

Although this possibility is small, Lu Li had experienced energy deprivation before his third deep evolution, so he felt it was possible. Hence, he was planning ahead.

Perhaps seeing Lu Li not speaking,

Zhang Guocheng, Xiaolin, and Old Wu all became silent.

Clearly, it was a prime opportunity to catch Jin Zhouzhou, but suddenly Julia Giannini’s attitude towards Lu Li changed drastically, preventing them from further tracking. Everyone felt it was a pity.

Opportunities like this don’t come around often.

Missing it might mean waiting a long time to encounter it again.

Moreover, Jin Zhouzhou, to stabilize his situation temporarily, hasn’t fully disclosed his secrets, but that doesn’t mean he won’t with time.

Zhang Guocheng, Xiaolin, and Old Wu could imagine that Jin Zhouzhou would eventually spill all the secrets through the enticements of California Eighteenth Street or its financier.

Just as everyone was at their wit’s end,

Lu Li suddenly raised a very critical question, ”Do you know where the underground boxing match is held?”

Zhang Guocheng was taken aback, ”We do know, but these matches usually require invitations for the audience. We can’t get in at all.”

Lu Li implied something else, ”The audience is invitation-only, but are the contestants also invitation-only?”

Among the group, a slightly chubby middle-aged woman suddenly realized and said, ”Mr. Lu, do you mean having one of us sign up for this boxing match?”

Lu Li nodded slightly and said, ”Yes, but not having one of you participate in this match. Instead, sign me up, and then you can disguise as my managers and team, and we can all get in together, can’t we?”

The underground boxing match is extremely bloody and brutal.

If others compete, Lu Li couldn’t guarantee no one would die.

He himself has outstanding skills and isn’t afraid of any danger.

So Lu Li proposed to participate himself.

Zhang Guocheng’s eyes lit up, ”If we disguise as a boxer and register for the competition, there’s a high chance of getting in. Although in this circle, you need an introduction from someone familiar to register for the competition, it’s much easier than getting in as an audience member. We just need to find an underground boxing agent, pay them a little, and registering shouldn’t be difficult.”

A breakthrough appeared here, and everyone’s thinking suddenly opened up.

Xiaolin suddenly added, ”I know someone who is currently with the ’Asia Kids’ organization in Los Angeles. He should know the underground boxing agents. I’ll call and ask.”

Zhang Guocheng said, ”Okay, go quickly.”

Xiaolin acknowledged, taking his phone and going out.

Lu Li and Zhang Guocheng, along with more than a dozen others, waited in the room.

About five minutes passed.

Xiaolin came back from outside.

Zhang Guocheng immediately asked, ”How did it go?”

Xiaolin, slightly excited, said, ”I promised him a fee of 5,000 US Dollars, and he agreed to introduce us to an agent. We should head over now.”

Lu Li stood up and said, ”Let’s go. You, me, and Director Zhang will go together. The others stay at the hotel. Too many people might arouse suspicion.”

Zhang Guocheng stood up and said, ”Mr. Lu is right. The others stay on standby at the hotel, and we’ll go and check it out first.”

...

The three of them prepared some US Dollars and took a taxi to their destination.

They arrived at a small tavern.

Lu Li, Zhang Guocheng, and Xiaolin paid the fare and went straight inside.

Unlike the other taverns in Los Angeles, filled with White and Black people,

this tavern was filled with Chinese people.

Perhaps seeing their unfamiliar faces,

those drinking inside turned their suspicious eyes on them.

At this moment, a young man in his thirties, with a centipede-like scar on his face, sitting in a corner, waved at Xiaolin, ”Over here.”

The other people, seeing this, all withdrew their gazes.

Lu Li and Zhang Guocheng followed Xiaolin toward the corner.

He saw a Black man in his forties, wearing a big gold chain and with rings on all his fingers, sitting beside the young man.

”Brother Lin, long time no see.”

”Xiaozheng, how’s life been after coming to the Ugly Country for four or five years?”

Xiaolin and Xiaozheng hugged, exchanging pleasantries.

Meanwhile, they introduced Lu Li and Zhang Guocheng to him.

Xiaozheng took the opportunity to introduce that Black man.

Lu Li then knew that the Black man’s name was Johnny Smith, one of the most powerful underground boxing managers in the area.

After the introductions, Johnny Smith leaned back casually in his seat and asked, ”Who among you wants to fight in the boxing match?”

Lu Li said, ”Me.”

Johnny Smith looked Lu Li up and down, questioning, ”You?”

Clearly, he saw that Lu Li’s physique wasn’t much different from an ordinary person and didn’t believe he had the ability to fight in an underground boxing match.

Lu Li replied calmly, ”Yes, it’s me.”

Johnny Smith said, ”Three thousand US Dollars, no liability for death.”

Lu Li thought the other party wanted three thousand US Dollars, gave Zhang Guocheng a look.

Zhang Guocheng immediately took out three thousand US Dollars from the bag, ”Here’s the money.”

Johnny Smith, speechless, said, ”What I mean is your appearance fee is only three thousand US Dollars, even if you get killed, it has nothing to do with me; this is your life-buying money.”

Lu Li hadn’t expected they wouldn’t need money, and there was a three-thousand US Dollar income.

He asked in confusion, ”We don’t need to give money, and you’re willing to help me participate?”

Johnny Smith shrugged, ”I’ve seen many like you; several end up killed every night. Anyway, those rich people just want to see bloody violence, who participates doesn’t matter. If you want to trade your life for money, I certainly won’t stop you.”

Zhang Guocheng asked, ”Can we specify which boxing match to enter?”

Johnny Smith rolled his eyes, ”Buddy, your guy isn’t famous. How could you possibly choose which match to participate in? Moreover, there’s only a match happening in Santa Monica recently; you can’t possibly participate in any other.”

Lu Li had a thought, wasn’t the underground boxing match location Zhang Guocheng mentioned before in Santa Monica?

Zhang Guocheng’s eyes lit up, then he quickly pretended to sigh, ”Alright, let’s join this match then.”

Hearing this, Johnny Smith sat up, ”Since you’ve decided to participate, let me tell you about the specifics of this match.”

Lu Li, Zhang Guocheng, and Xiaolin sat up straight, listening intently.

As for Xiaozheng, he seemed indifferent, apparently not concerned about the matter.

Johnny Smith said, ”For a first-timer like you, you’ll need to fight in a ladder match... To put it simply, you’ll start fighting from the lower-tier fighters, and if you win, you advance to the next round. If you have the strength, you can fight your way to the top midnight main event in one night, but if you don’t want to get yourself killed, I’d advise you to adjust your status after winning one fight and continue in the next round. After all, we keep a record of points, and as long as you’re still competing in Southern California, these points are permanently valid, until... you get killed!”

Lu Li nodded slightly, ”Got it, is there anything else to note?”

Johnny Smith said, ”Yes, when participating in these matches, besides not allowing weapons, there are no other restrictions. You can use any method to incapacitate your opponent, including killing them. If the opponent hasn’t lost the ability to act, the match won’t stop.”

Truly, very brutal indeed.

Lu Li said, ”Understood.”

Johnny Smith added, ”Oh, and one more thing, a reminder for you. There will be betting on every participant, as participants and their teams, you are not allowed to bet on losing, because if found out, terrible things will happen.”

This sentence was clearly warning Lu Li and others against match-fixing.

Lu Li’s eyes flickered slightly, ”You mean, I can bet on myself winning the match?”

”Of course.” Johnny Smith said, ”You can also bet on yourself being the champion that night. That has generally higher odds, but looking at you, I think just getting past the first round of the ladder match is already a good performance, don’t expect to win the championship.”

Heh heh.

Getting past the first round of the ladder match is already a good performance?

Lu Li remained expressionless.

However, Zhang Guocheng and Xiaolin couldn’t help but smile secretly.

They thought to themselves, this old Black really doesn’t know Mr. Lu’s true strength.
