Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 350: Revised: Volume 5 Chapter 3 The Song of Freedom_3

Seeing the commander of the First Battalion retreat silently, Bonnie standing beside him suddenly felt a bit despondent.

This was actually a compromise by Osullivan; he didn’t force the First Battalion to capture the high ground alone to regain their dignity but sent out another battalion. With two battalions, nearly eight hundred Mecha units attacking the high ground, currently defended by an equal number of infantry, they would surely take it down even if the ratio was one to one!

To others, the Mythical Army might seem like monsters, but to Bonnie, it was a force that once had countless victories and honors, a team she was once proud to be part of.

But now, honor had already distanced itself from this army, which fought everywhere for the Gazalin Empire. Even if they captured the Freedom Front’s high ground, honor would only belong to those Freedom Fighters who refused to surrender, those who Bonnie once looked down upon, the lower-class people who knew only to beg and destroy, not to this invincible force made up of proud Vibo people!

In the distance, the roar of warplanes echoed. Bonnie found it ironic; did the Mythical Army even need air support for this kind of battle?

She suddenly wanted to see Reinhardt sooner. She wanted to find out why all this was happening!

Seeing the two Mechanical Armor Battalions of the Mythical Army forming their attack formations below the high ground, the Freedom Fighters gathered together, silently collecting ammunition, tying Fusion Hand Grenades onto their bodies.

On the positions that had just repelled the Desic Mecha attack, everlasting smoke lingered. Mecha wreckages burned, sending up rolling black clouds. Occasional explosions made the entire position seem like a shaking hell in the flames.

The dead Freedom Fighters lay scattered in the trenches, their bodies stiff from the winter cold. Outside the trenches, some fighters’ remains still held their charging postures.

Life was so fragile; everyone knew when the enemy attacked again, everyone here would die, die in battle! This was always the best fate for the Freedom Fighters!

The enemy Mecha started to move, intense artillery fire covered the entire position once again.

Suddenly, a song rang out on the position. It was an ancient Kentai Clan folk tune, telling the story of a young man riding his steed freely under the blue sky and his beloved girl. The song pierced through the thunder of artillery, high-pitched and resonant. It was the song of a free ethnic group, every note filled with a longing for equality and freedom. At the same time, the song mocked the intense artillery, brazenly emitting loud ridicule!

Oberto picked up his portable missile launcher, loaded the last Anti-Mecha Missile. He sang aloud; years ago, he sang this song to woo his wife. Now, he was as young and radiant as twenty years ago. He hugged each surviving warrior one by one. Then, he said, ”Fight!”

The singing stopped, and a roar like angry thunder rose from the position.

”Fight!”

All the Freedom Fighters entered the trenches, and on both sides of the high ground, thousands of Mecha began to jog. The ground trembled with the bursts of explosions on the position and the footsteps of Mecha charging. Just as this inevitable grand drama was about to come to an end, a large flag slowly emerged from the horizon behind the Desic Empire, like a fire-red lightning cutting through the Black Cloud!

”Bandit army!”

No one knew which army this flag represented, and everyone speculated.

Soon, with the appearance of a Mecha, everyone’s gaze froze! Whether it was the Freedom Front warriors, Mythical Army soldiers, or Desic commanders, everyone recognized this legendary Mecha! This Mecha, which had spread throughout human society via Leray Federation’s promotional video, the ragged [Magic Beast]!

”He’s alive?” came the joyful voice of the Freedom Fighters.

”He’s alive?” echoed the unbelieving voices of the Desic Empire Soldiers and Mythical Army soldiers.

”He’s here!” Oberto cried out in joy.

”He’s here!” whispered Bonnie with complex emotions.

But after waiting for a while, this ragged [Magic Beast] just stood foolishly on the slope, idiotically waving that fire-red flag.

Behind him, there wasn’t the anticipated flood of Mecha forces.

He stood there all alone, repeatedly waving the flag, pretending to be mighty! One Mecha, dare to call itself an army?
