Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 348: Volume 5, Chapter 3 The Song of Freedom

”Ppupupu!” A burst of energy machine gun fire swept over the dirt mound outside the trench, kicking up some dust. A vigilant Freedom Fighter shrank back, slid down to the bottom of the trench, and leaned his back against the trench wall, panting heavily. Around him, in numerous large craters, the wreckage of dozens of mechas was burning, thick smoke obscuring the entire front line, making it suffocating.

This was the first line of defense for the Freedom Front. A full half hour had passed, and the fierce attacks of two mechanical armor battalions had still not breached this first trench.

The mechas at the foot of the hill once again surged aggressively, a few shells landing around this Freedom Fighter, the flying dust quickly covered him as he lay down in the trench, turning him into a dirt-covered figure.

”Phoo!” The Freedom Fighter shook his somewhat dazed head from the violent explosion, spat out the dirt in his mouth, and cursed proudly, ”Damn it! Even that can’t hit me, did your mama forget to feed you sharp eyes for breakfast?”

He poked his head out, squinted his eyes, and saw countless mechas crossing the craters at the front line, closing in on him.

”Fire!” The voice of the platoon leader came from nearby. The Freedom Fighter selected the nearest target, quickly raised the energy cannon in his hand, and pulled the trigger. The energy cannon roared urgently, the energy bullets like fiery red ribbons shot out, merging with the firepower group of his comrades, attacking the mechas almost storming into the trench.

”Boom!” The leading Vajra mecha dodged desperately under the intense anti-mecha fire, its energy shield changing colors rapidly. Ultimately, it couldn’t escape the overwhelming firepower and was blown to pieces in a sky-rending explosion.

However, the firepower of the Freedom Front was limited. Facing the tide of advancing mechas, the explosion of this Vajra was like a small stone dropped in a lake, disappearing after a ripple.

The Freedom Fighter tightened the fusion hand grenades tied together in his hand, his bloodshot eyes locked onto a Vajra charging at high speed toward the trench. He faced these steel giants with mountainous ferocity without fear.

Twenty meters, ten meters, five meters! The attacking mecha group closed in rapidly, the short distance almost passed in the blink of an eye. Just as the lead mecha wave was about to crash into the trench, suddenly, a loud bugle call echoed across the sky. The Freedom Fighter suddenly embraced his fusion hand grenades and leapt out of the trench like a leopard. All around him, agile figures leapt up simultaneously, fiercely colliding with the high-speed charging mechas within the few meters of gap.

The world abruptly fell silent. The Freedom Fighter, desperately sprinting toward the enemy mechas, could only hear his own fierce panting and the terrified cries of the enemy commander, ”Evade!” The mechas in front of him immediately slowed their steps in chaos, their energy machine guns, and energy cannons frantically pouring fire on the ground, trying to prevent the group of Freedom Fighters scampering like mice.

But the distance was too short. Five to ten meters allowed no time for these mechas to take evasive action that could alter their fate.

Three meters, two meters, the Freedom Fighter suddenly pounced, throwing himself like a stone onto the mechanical legs of a mecha. Blood gushed from his mouth, yet a proud smile filled his face.

”Boom!” ”Boom!” ”Boom!” Continuous explosions erupted skyward. These Freedom Fighters, sacrificing their lives, were like precision-guided missiles, sweeping unchallenged within ten meters before the trench! They launched a countercharge with their bodies and the fusion hand grenades strapped together. The weakly protected drive systems of the mechas’ legs became their targets. Dozens of menacing mechas lost all mobility amid the explosions and flying flesh and blood, becoming sitting ducks before the trench.

The remaining assaulting mechas were blocked from their charge. Watching the timely counterattack from the dozens of Freedom Front mechas, they retreated under blind fire suppression. Still, they didn’t see it as a defeat, knowing countless mechas were flanking the Freedom Front’s defenses, certain that eventually, their relentless attacks would tear a gap in this life-built trench.

”First Platoon! Left side!” Jiasier shouted with a hoarse voice.

The so-called First Platoon consisted of just one squad of mechas. Hearing the order, they quickly abandoned the pursuit and dashed to the left.

”Boom! Boom!” In the crisscrossing trench warfare, enemy shells continuously fell. In some places, the earth had been entirely lifted, exposing the hard rock, with shards flying everywhere. Amid this intensive shelling, one figure after another resolutely and swiftly leapt from the trenches, pouncing on the nearby enemy.

”First Platoon, charge!” Driving a badly damaged mecha, seeing his comrades turned into flying flesh and blood one after another, the platoon leader went mad, repeatedly charging and assaulting, driving the cowardly enemies in their suicidal attacks out of the line, ensuring his comrades’ sacrifices held value, keeping the position firmly in the hands of the Freedom Front!

”Boom!” An energy bullet hit the left shoulder of the platoon leader’s mecha. Under the immense impact, the mecha jerked to the side. The already deep red energy shield could no longer offer protection, and the mechanical arm on the left side hung limply, losing its function.
