Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 1313: Chapter 61: Towering Mountains and Lofty Peaks (5)

The living room’s TV flickered, and parents tightly held their child, nestled on the sofa.

In the office, the boss paused his work, gathering with employees in the break room; in the bar, the singer stopped playing his guitar, waiters ceased bustling around, and the bartender set down his glass; on the streets, flying cars parked one after another by the roadside, as people opened their doors, stepped out, and mingled with the crowd standing silently, heads raised, at the square....

Everyone was quietly watching the TV as the screen flickered.

”Can you see this troop beside me...” Felix shouted loudly into the camera on the swiftly moving mecha: ”...It’s October 19, 2063, 7 a.m....”

The audience watched intently, afraid to miss a single detail.

The time Felix mentioned was one that no one could ever forget.

Just a few hours before that, the Allies had arrived at Canglang Star. It was also then that everyone witnessed the miracle that Marshal Li Cunxin was still alive.

That day, the whole of Chuckna was in an uproar.

The overwhelming joy seemed to linger in the mind, the electric current of immense happiness and pride seemed to creep over every inch of skin, leaving a tingling sensation that made goosebumps rise....

However, it was only now that everyone realized that while they were celebrating in joy, these weary warriors had already set out on their journey once more.

”Now, we will follow this army to document a battle. We will record everything completely, present it to you, so you understand how heroically our warriors are fighting for this nation......”

The background of the footage constantly changed as it moved.

In the morning light, a troop marched majestically toward the west. The sunlight draped a faint golden glow over the backs of the warriors, while ahead of them, the rolling mountains remained shrouded in the dwindling echoes of the night.

”....Unfortunately, our camera cannot witness the battle of another group of warriors. Their fight will be more dangerous, more intense than what we see......”

Felix’s deep voice caused everyone’s hearts to tighten suddenly.

Everyone knew that Felix was referring to those warriors who left the ranks to go to another place on a near-suicidal mission.

They were not in the frame; they were on the other side of those distant mountains.

”To cover the main force, the Suicide Camp must divert the Jiepeng 2nd Armored Division and hold out for at least five hours. Perhaps not everyone understands the difficulty of this task, so let me tell you what kind of enemy our warriors are facing...” Felix’s off-screen narration interjected into the footage.

Renowned as the strongest land force, the Jiepeng Army, with its elite Royal First Guard, infamous Royal First Guard Second Armored Division.... Men clenched their fists, women covered their mouths.

Could that be the enemy an armored camp is supposed to face?!

”....In terms of troops, the Jiepeng 2nd Armored Division has four regiments, totaling sixteen battalions. Excluding its electronic camp and engineering, logistics, and other units, there are thirteen combat units, nearly six thousand mechanical warriors selected from the Jiepeng Army! In other words, our warriors are facing enemies twelve to thirteen times their number!”

In the inserted footage, Felix put down his data file, looked into the camera, and said heavily, ”Some may think this is not a too big a gap. Historically, there have been many instances of the few defeating the many. But please remember, the 13th Armored Division is only a Chuckna second-level armored division, while the Jiepeng 2nd Armored Division is elite among the Jiepeng’s special-level troops!”

The screen returned to the previous shaky footage. Felix’s voice off-screen did not pause: ”Remember the name of this camp. Not the First Battalion, not the Second Battalion, not the 3rd Battalion, it’s called Suicide Camp!”

Watching the silent warriors beside Felix on screen, the young men whose eyes reddened with worry for their comrades, yet who would fight to the death without retreat before the enemy, every viewer felt an overwhelming mix of sourness and warmth rush to their noses.

People recalled the names marked with black borders at the program’s beginning!

The title Suicide Squad was not unfamiliar. Countless heroism-themed movies had similar subjects. In peacetime, it was just entertainment. But in these war years, all of this was happening before their eyes. This was not a movie, not a performance, but the life stories of hundreds of warriors!

And for most of them, their lives had already been frozen in time!

The program continued. Felix finally broke his promise and switched the footage to a set of military-recorded shots.

This was a set of footage shot from the recording device of a space-based fighter jet. The ground rushed by swiftly under the wings, and in the footage, all that could be seen was a sea-like undulation of green.

”This footage was shot from a fighter jet. The time was 9:14 a.m. on the 19th. Our pilots distinctly remembered this time because, at this moment, after waiting in the air, they received the successful lure signal from the Suicide Camp. Immediately, they flew as fast as possible toward the signal’s direction...”

Felix’s commentary couldn’t hide his excitement. Even though it was a post-event narration, several days had passed since then, he still seemed as if back in that morning of October 19.

The camera lifted from the swiftly passing ground, zoomed in, and focused on the wreckage of a Jiepeng Mecha lying on a hillside. The wreckage lay there alone, charred all over. It was evident that it had burned intensely. The surrounding grass and trees were all scorched away, exposing large patches of gray-brown soil.

Soon after, the camera turned, and the remnants of several other mechas appeared.

The wreckage became more and more numerous, stretching northward for several kilometers. Finally, a small, bald hill blasted bare, and the valley beyond, resembling a mecha graveyard, appeared before the audience’s eyes.

”Do you remember those names I recited just now, do you remember those names marked with a black border?”

Off-screen, Felix’s voice trembles.

”Look at this canyon, those fallen warriors rest here. Do you see the black Mecha beside them? Let me tell you, these young people of Chuckna fought hard against the enemy here.”

Felix’s trembling voice is somewhat out of control, his speech speeds up, and his emotions become increasingly intense: ”It was in this battle that they wiped out Jiepeng 2nd Armored Division’s elite Blade Special Camp. It was in this battle that they pulled out the Second Armored Division’s fangs, shattered the myth of the so-called strongest army, made the enemy bleed, made the enemy wild, pushed the enemy to relentlessly pursue them!”

”From luring the enemy to annihilating the enemy, a total of 261 Suicide Camp warriors fell. Yet, they took out 476 of Jiepeng’s finest warriors, effectively removing Jiepeng’s elite Blade Camp from existence!” Felix’s voice choked slightly, ”I’m proud of them. They completed their mission; they fulfilled their pledge to defend this nation with their lives.”

The audience stared at the screen dumbfounded. They were stunned by the images appearing on the screen. As they watched another set of close-up shots of tangled Mecha wreckage and scenes as hellish as the worst nightmare, many people’s emotions collapsed instantly.

”Oh, God.” A middle-aged woman cried, burying her head in her husband’s chest.

”Bang,” a patron in the tavern slammed his fist on the bar, gritting his teeth, trembling all over.

Only now did everyone understand why the old man, who insisted on recording all reality with his lens, was undeterred by questioning, undeterred by the risk that his reputation, built over decades, could be destroyed overnight, yet resolutely used military-recorded footage in this episode.

All because of this heart-wrenching canyon!

Names with black borders rolled on the screen. The background of the screen showed silhouettes stepping out of the lineup.

Many people could no longer sit still.

With tears in their eyes, they spontaneously jumped up and rushed out of their homes, offices, bars...

Those close by ran along the street, while those farther away jumped into Flying Cars, merging into the flowing traffic.

At that moment, almost every florist realized in horror that they were being robbed. The throng of people grabbed flowers with red eyes, threw down money, and continued to run. Moments later, all flower shops were emptied.

At the entrance of the Military Department building, a sentry quietly stood at his post. He stared straight ahead, his posture upright.

Bouquets of flowers were gently placed at the doorstep.

Before the Hero Monument in Victory Square, before the district’s fallen soldier memorial board, countless candles were lit, countless flowers gathered here. Many girls placed flowers down and stood quietly beside them, crying like they’d been transformed into people made of tears as they looked at the names of boys of the same age who would never grow up.

The program continued, the footage switched, like a tidal wave of Jiepeng Mecha chasing down over two hundred Red Mecha.

Chuckna Fighters desperately launched attacks trying to delay the Jiepeng people’s pursuit. The footage was filled with the glare of explosions and mushroom clouds, with the deafening sound of gunfire and explosions.

”What I have documented, what I have reported, might only be an insignificant part of this brutal war. Perhaps, there are many more teams like the Suicide Camp.” Felix’s voice was unusually clear amidst the explosions: ”However, this is what I can present to you, the most important part of the battle I experienced.”

”Now, the battle is not yet over, the Suicide Camp is fleeing under enemy pursuit. All I can do is tell you everything, and join you in praying for these warriors.”

The program was about to end, in the final footage, a girl in a white research uniform quietly sat on a simple shelter’s empty ammo box.

”He will come back!” Felix’s unexpected voice sounded in the footage.

Two crisp laughs echoed simultaneously.

”He will come back!” Su Fei’s laughter outside the footage.

”I know.” The girl nodded briskly.
