Counterfeit Hero

Everyone experiences fear. But the difference between a hero and an ordinary person is that a hero grits their teeth and perseveres despite that fear. They strive towards an uncertain future and fight against fate at every turn of their life.

Helen decided to record it all.

An ordinary person burdened with the halo of a hero, living a real and not-so-romantic life amidst war.

The lens of the miniature camera turned back to the room.

In the frame, Fatty had his mouth wide open, an apple clamped in his teeth, crouching sneaky below the window sill, with only half his head and one eye peeking through the gap in the curtains to look outside.

”Fatty!” Helen bit her lip and turned the camera towards the window, adjusting the curtain to capture a bigger angle.

A white flash swept across the street.

”Get down!”

All of a sudden, with a thunderous shout from Fatty, Helen was tackled to the ground before she could react.

The camera slipped out of her hand, tracing an arc in the air, still filming as it tumbled. An old infantry rocket streaked through the curtains. As the camera hit the thick carpet, a violent explosion and roaring fire swept through the whole room.

As the rocket trailed thick smoke and zoomed through the window, Captain of the Leray Aerospace Forces, Blue Rose Space Mecha Squadron Leader, and Sixth-level Mecha Warrior Markovich’s eyes turned red.

After receiving Chekov’s orders, the 120 combat mechas had been training at the Redbeard Pirate Base and were led by Markovich aboard the ”Audrey” smuggling ship, arriving overnight at Mars Free Port as planned and scattered in batches to lie low.

This day had been long awaited by Markovich.

As an airman, Markovich had been fighting on the front line ever since the Gazalin invasion of Leray.

From the Galileo Star System to the Newton Star System, from Lucerne to Miloke, the constant retreats of the Leray Federation had made Markovich extremely furious and humiliated.

It wasn’t until the Leray Army, under Bernadotte’s command, won the Miloke battle that the main forces of the Gazalin Army were crushed, finally securing the Newton Star System.

Then, under Russell’s leadership, the Leray Federation began its counterattack on the Galileo Star System.

And all of this owed much to one person, Tian Xingjian.

It was he who, at a critical moment, deciphered Russell’s hints and understood his plans, leading Leray to a strategic reversal. It was he who, while Markovich was with the Federation’s 4th Fleet, escorting the giant transport ship for an airdrop in Lucerne, captured the Gazalin Emperor James, throwing the whole Gazalin side into disarray and making their army in Lucerne demoralized to resist.

The things that ordinary people didn’t know, as a soldier, Markovich knew full well. The deeds of this man always surfaced in every trench and warship along the resistance fronts.

And as a mecha warrior, Markovich was especially an admirer of this hero who had defeated Reinhardt.

He had watched the combat footage of Fatty fighting the Hunter Corps, against the Desic Mechas, and with the Mythical Army over and over.

When this Fatty arrived at the Blue Rose, commanding this destroyer to cover for the Castle Rose, ordering ramming to open enemy ships and leading everyone out of certain death, capturing the Redbeard Pirate Base while the Saleria Federation surrendered and everyone neared despair, rallying the spirits of the Leray people, intimidating the pirates, refitting warships and mechas, desperately forging an armed force on the fringe, Markovich had become his devoted follower.

A small destroyer in the cosmic war was nearly an insignificant force, yet under Fatty’s lead, this force was visibly growing stronger.

Not to mention the astonishing ”Magic Cube”, not to mention several barely recognizable armed merchant ships, or those stealth reconnaissance ships, and those increasingly organized pirates, but just the ground armored force formed by Fatty alone earned Markovich’s absolute respect!

A dozen Leray Seventh Generation Space Mechas, more than a hundred civilian mechas from the pirate base, all refurbished by Fatty, exhausting every warehouse, laboring meticulously, and ingeniously converting them into combat mechas nearing the peak performance of the Eighth Generation — a feat unseen by Markovich in his entire military career!

During subsequent training, when everyone realized their mechas could easily accomplish the fighting skills taught by Officer Fatty and execute so many incredible maneuvers and tactics, they all had one thought — to follow this Fatty wherever he went, to do as he did, believing that in the tortuous and despairing future, he could create miracles!

Upon receiving the order to arrive at Puluo Town, Markovich and the over one hundred mecha warriors who had trained intensely for over a month were determined. Finally setting foot on this chaotic land, they wanted to do the Leray’s first battle proud.

After Tian Xingjian issued orders via communication device, Markovich promptly gave instructions to his Mecha Team. In just two minutes, the mechas hidden around the streets near First Avenue would rapidly assemble here.

However, as the sight of bandit army mechas appeared in his view, a rocket burst into the window of the person who had just signaled to him.

Anyone can die, but this person must not!

The bandit army mecha soldiers rushing towards Puluo First Avenue still didn’t know what had happened when in their rapid advance, they heard Markovich’s grief-stricken, desperate, and mad howl: ”Kill!”
