The Queen's Mage

The iron came off on the third afternoon after the council agreed to consider the impossible.

Lia did it herself.

That, apparently, was meant to be reassuring.

Serali sat on the edge of the hearth chair with one hand braced on the cushion and the other curled tightly enough around the carved arm to make her knuckles ache. She had refused the bed. She had refused, with admirable dignity, to ask whether the bangle would bite when opened.

It probably would not.

Probably was one of the more useless words ever invented.

Allandra stood by the window, far enough away not to crowd her and close enough that Serali could feel the queen’s attention like sunlight through glass. Daravan waited near the door with his arms folded, face set in the expression of a man who had prepared for three disasters and expected a fourth to arrive out of professional spite.

Lia crouched before Serali’s chair and took her ankle in both hands.

Serali went rigid.

Lia looked up. “I am touching your ankle. Nothing else.”

“I noticed.”

“You are also holding your breath.”

“I noticed that too.”

“Stop it.”

Serali glared at her.

Lia, immune to glares by long practice, turned the small key.

The iron bangle opened with a soft click.

Nothing dramatic happened.

No surge of shadow. No crack of power. No black frost racing up the walls. No ancient Xuiven curse bursting from Serali’s skin to rearrange the furniture and give Lord Merrow something new to fear.

Only her ankle, suddenly lighter.

Only a red ring in the skin where the iron had rested.

Only—

Serali gasped.

Allandra took one step forward before she stopped herself.

Daravan’s hand went to his sword.

Lia did neither. Lia only set the bangle on the floor as if it were a dead insect and laid two fingers against Serali’s pulse. “Describe it.”

Serali could not.

For one terrible second, the room had too many edges. The lamps. The window. The guards beyond the door. Daravan’s alarm, sharp and disciplined. Lia’s concentration, cool as clean linen.

And Allandra.

Allandra struck through everything.

Not a thought. Not words. Not even an emotion Serali could name cleanly. Heat, fear, restraint, relief, all tangled together and pressed behind the queen’s ribs with enough force that Serali felt it echo under her own.

She stared at Allandra.

The queen had gone very still.

Oh, Serali thought.

The iron had not only bound her magic.

It had muffled this.

Allandra had been feeling the bond through glass while Serali had been feeling it through stone.

No wonder the queen always looked as if she were holding back a storm with both hands.

Serali swallowed. “I can feel her.”

The words entered the room and changed it.

Allandra’s face tightened.

Lia’s gaze flicked once toward the queen, then back to Serali. “How much?”

“Too much.”

“That is not a measure.”

“It is the measure I have.”

Daravan exhaled through his nose.

Allandra’s voice came carefully. “Pain?”

“No.”

“Fear?”

Serali almost lied.

Then the bond shifted, and Allandra’s fear touched hers more sharply for the attempt.

Serali looked away. “Not mine.”

Silence.

Lia’s hand steadied on her ankle. “The iron was dampening more than shadow work.”

“Apparently.”

“That will settle.”

Love this story? Find the genuine version on the author’s preferred platform and support their work!

“Today?”

“No.”

“Then that was a cruelly placed sentence.”

Lia’s mouth almost curved. “It will become less startling as you learn what is yours and what is not.”

Serali looked at Allandra again despite herself.

Allandra stood with both hands clasped behind her back, posture perfect, face controlled, eyes too bright with everything she was not allowing herself to do.

What is yours and what is not.

Serali did not know how anyone learned that when Allandra’s restraint felt like a hand pressed against a door from the other side.

Awful. This was going to be awful.

“Alright,” Lia said briskly, ruining the moment before it became unbearable. “We start slowly. No spellwork today. Food. Rest. No attempting to prove you are fine.”

“I was not going to.”

Daravan said, “You were considering it.”

Serali pointed at him. “No one asked you.”

“No one ever does. I contribute anyway.”

Allandra’s mouth twitched.

The bond warmed.

Serali felt it.

This time, she did not gasp.

Progress, apparently, was humiliation endured twice.

By the fourth morning, Serali had learned three things.

First, old law was worse than old magic.

Second, Allandra’s court scribes had been trained to take a simple sentence, strangle it with ribbon, dip it in gold, and call the corpse binding language.

Third, magic returned like blood to a sleeping limb: slowly, painfully, and with enough prickling discomfort to make Serali consider cutting the whole thing off.

The oath lay in pieces across the table.

No obedience.

No surrender.

No disclosure.

No battlefield service unless separately agreed.

No pretending this was mercy.

That last phrase had not made it into the oath. Obviously. Even Serali understood court documents rarely improved when accused directly of lying.

But Allandra had written around it.

The appointment shall be understood as provisional crown service undertaken for mutual security and formal protection, not as pardon, possession, penal labor, or confession of wrongdoing.

Serali had read that line six times.

Then she had asked if Allandra had written it to be kind.

Allandra had looked at her and said, “No. I wrote it to be accurate.”

Serali had not known what to do with that.

So she had told the clerk his semicolon usage was excessive.

Now the queen was gone, the clerk was gone, Daravan was gone, and Serali stood near the hearth with shadow prickling under her nails and the unpleasant awareness that the demonstration was two days away.

Private, they kept saying.

As if private meant safe.

Private only meant fewer witnesses if everything went wrong.

She lifted her palm. A ribbon of shadow appeared reluctantly between forefinger and thumb, like a cat deciding whether affection was worth the indignity of movement.

Then it vanished.

“Coward.”

A soft knock sounded at the door.

Serali looked up. “If that is another oath clerk, I have died.”

The door opened, and Mara stepped in carrying a folded blue shawl over one arm. “Not an oath clerk.”

“Can you prove it?”

Mara looked down at herself. “I am not wearing enough panic.”

“Fair.”

The two guards remained visible in the hall beyond her. They no longer stood in the room unless there was cause. That had been one of the smaller changes, one Allandra called procedural, Daravan called sensible, and Serali called late.

Still, the door no longer locked behind Mara.

Still, the guards waited outside.

Still, Serali noticed every time.

Mara glanced at Serali’s lifted hand. “Practicing?”

“Failing.”

“That looked like practicing.”

“Then you are generous.”

“I have been told I have a charitable view of disasters.”

“By whom?”

“My mother. Usually while I am trying to bake.”

Serali blinked.

Mara had a mother.

Of course she had a mother. People generally did. But the fact arrived strangely, like opening a drawer and finding a window.

Serali lowered her hand. “Is there a reason you are holding a shawl as if it might explode?”

Mara looked down. “I thought you might want to walk.”

“Walk,” she repeated.

“Yes.”

“In circles?”

“If you prefer.”

“In this room?”

“No.” Mara smoothed one hand over the shawl. “Her Majesty approved movement through the east wing and inner gardens, with escort. If you wish.”

Serali stared at her.

Outside.

Her first instinct was suspicion so sharp it almost became refusal. A trick. A test. A prettier way to see if she would run. A corridor lined with guards and courtiers waiting to stare.

Her second instinct was the window.

The sky beyond it was painfully blue.

“How many guards?” she asked.

“Two. They will walk behind us.”

“Us?”

“If you would like me to show you.”

Serali looked at the door.

The guards beyond it were deliberately not listening, which meant they were listening very hard. One was older, with gray in his beard. The other was young and trying to look older. Neither had been present in the dungeon. Serali knew that because she had memorized every face that had seen her in iron.

She looked back at Mara.

“Is this your idea?”

“Partly.”

“That means yes with someone royal standing behind it.”

Mara’s mouth twitched. “Her Majesty said you may be less likely to stab the shrubbery if someone familiar came with you.”

Serali stared.

Mara’s face remained solemn.

“That cannot be a direct quote.”

“No.”

“Did she say stab?”

“No.”

“Did she say shrubbery?”

“She said gardens.”

Serali narrowed her eyes. “You improved it.”

“I did.”

“Bold.”

“I am trying it.”

Serali almost smiled.

Almost.

She looked around the room: the table cluttered with law, the bed too neatly made, the lamps Mara kept trimmed, the window that had taught her the shape of the gardens without letting her feel the air.

A room that no longer locked.

A room that was still a cage

“Yes,” Serali said, before fear could become dignity. “I want to walk.”

Mara’s smile came and went quickly, but not quickly enough.

She held out the shawl. “It may be bright.”

“I have met sunlight before.”

“And hated it?”

“Usually.”

“This will be warmer.”

“That sounds like a threat.”

“It was meant as reassurance.”

“Work on that.”

Mara draped the shawl over Serali’s shoulders without touching her throat. She had learned that early. No hands near the throat. No sudden movement behind her. No standing between Serali and the door unless necessary.

People could be trained, apparently.

The thought should have pleased her less.

Serali stepped into the corridor.

The guards straightened.

Her whole body tried to turn the movement into danger.

She forced herself not to flinch.

The older guard bowed his head. “Royal Mage.”

Serali stopped.

Mara stopped beside her.

The young guard looked as though he had swallowed a pebble.

Serali turned slowly. “I am not that yet.”

“No, my lady.”

“I am also not your lady.”

“No, my—” He caught himself. “No.”

Serali looked at him.

He looked miserable.

Mara’s lips pressed together.

Serali exhaled. “Try Serali.”

The older guard’s eyes flicked toward Mara, then back. “Serali.”

The name in a stranger’s mouth should have felt like theft.

It did not.

Not entirely.

She started walking before she could think about that too long.

The east wing unfolded around her in warm stone, faded runners, arched windows, and walls painted in colors the Lyehiran court would have considered undignified.

Yellow.

Terracotta.

Soft green.

Blue tiles around the window frames, each one hand-painted with sunbursts, birds, vines, ridiculous little bees. There were no black marble floors polished to a killing shine. No servants gliding with downcast eyes as if one wrong breath might bring a lash.

A boy carrying folded linens nearly collided with Mara, squeaked, apologized three times, and laughed when she told him he would survive.

Laughed.

In a palace hallway.

Serali stared after him.

Mara noticed. “That was Tovin. He is always nearly colliding with things.”

“He laughed.”

“Yes.”

“At a mistake.”

Mara’s expression softened. “Small mistakes are usually allowed here.”

Usually.

There it was. The court beneath the warmth.

Serali understood. Of course she did. No court was gentle. Avalusia’s might smile more and execute less often, but power still lived in the walls.

Still.

The halls were warm.

People looked up.

No one looked ready to be summarily executed.

The absence was so large that Serali did not know how to step around it.
