The Queen's Mage

The vault was below the dungeons.

Serali realized that only after the second flight of stairs, when the air changed from cold stone and old salt to something deeper, older, and worse. The palace above had been carved for queens and courtiers and bright Sun Fae ceremonies. Even the dungeons, miserable as they were, had belonged to the same world: locked doors, guards with keys, torchlight, procedure.

This place belonged to the part of a palace no one mentioned unless they needed it.

The guard dragged her down a narrow spiral stair with one hand locked around her upper arm. Serali could have walked. Probably. Her knees were still unreliable after the scramble through the palace, and the iron at her wrists had eaten so deeply into her skin that her fingers had gone numb again, but she could have stayed upright if anyone had cared to let her try.

No one did.

The stairs turned and turned until she lost track of direction. The world shrank to the guard’s grip, the drag of her boots over stone, the harsh clink of the manacles, and the steady, silent presence behind her.

Allandra.

The Queen had not spoken since the playroom.

That was worse than shouting.

Serali had seen fury before. Rania’s fury had been theatrical, sharpened for an audience. Vandra’s had been small and precise, folded into the crease of a napkin or the angle of a whip. Allandra’s was different.

It had weight.

Serali could feel it at her back: contained, disciplined, burning so hot it had gone nearly white.

At the bottom of the stair, the guard shoved open a door banded in dark metal. The hinges groaned with disuse. The air that breathed out of the room was cold enough to make Serali’s lungs seize.

The vault was small.

Not a cell. Not exactly.

A room for ending arguments.

Raw bedrock formed the walls, lumpy and damp, with rusted hooks set at uneven intervals along one side. A low iron table stood bolted to the floor, its surface dark with stains no scrubbing had managed to erase. Leather straps hung from a rack beneath it. In the corner, a drain cut into the stone waited with patient obscenity.

Serali looked at the table.

Then at the hooks.

Then at the drain.

Something inside her went very still.

Of course this was where the palace kept its honesty.

The guard dragged her across the threshold and released her. Her knees struck stone first, then her palms. Pain burst up her arms, bright and immediate, pulling her halfway back into herself.

She stayed down.

It seemed easier.

Behind her, Allandra entered.

The door shut.

The sound was too final.

Serali drew in a breath and tasted iron, smoke, old lime, and the memory of blood.

“Well,” she said, because silence had teeth and she had never been good at letting it bite first. “This is charming. Do all Sun Fae palaces have one, or is this a special royal feature?”

No one laughed.

The guard shifted beside the door, eyes fixed straight ahead. Smart man.

Allandra stood just inside the room. She wore no crown. No jewels. Only a dark green coat over silk, her hair still pinned with the merciless perfection of a woman who had run through a palace and somehow remained a queen.

Serali pushed herself onto her knees.

It took more effort than she liked.

Allandra watched every inch of it.

“You endangered the royal line,” the Queen said.

Her voice was soft.

Serali hated soft voices.

“I ran into a room,” Serali said. “Your daughter happened to be in it.”

“You barricaded the door.”

“I was being chased.”

“You put a chair between my guards and my child.”

“She helped with the chair.”

The guard’s face twitched.

Allandra’s did not.

Serali should have stopped. She knew that. She could feel the shape of the room around her, the way every word carried risk. But fear had always moved through her strangely. Sometimes it made her silent. Sometimes it made her foolish.

Sometimes it made her honest.

“I did not hurt her,” Serali said. “I did not touch her. I did not threaten her. I told her to move away from the door before you tore it apart.”

Allandra took one step forward.

Serali’s mouth went dry.

“You made her stand between me and you.”

“No,” Serali said, too quickly. “No. She did that herself.”

“She is four.”

“I noticed.”

The Queen’s eyes flashed.

Serali looked away first, not from shame, but because something in Allandra’s face was too bright to look at directly.

“She was trying to protect me,” Serali said, quieter. “Children do stupid things.”

“My daughter is not stupid.”

“I didn’t say she was.”

“You used her.”

Serali looked back then. “No.”

The word came out too clean. Too certain.

Allandra’s expression hardened, as if certainty offended her more than defiance.

“No?” she said.

“No.”

“You expect me to believe you stumbled into the princess’s rooms by accident.”

“Yes.”

“You expect me to believe you did not know where she was.”

“I didn’t.”

“You expect me to believe you had no plan.”

Serali looked at the table again.

At the straps.

At the drain.

“No,” she said softly. “I don’t expect you to believe anything.”

Allandra’s jaw tightened.

She turned toward the guard. “Leave us.”

The guard looked briefly uncertain.

Allandra did not raise her voice. “Now.”

He bowed and retreated with visible relief. The door closed behind him.

Serali was alone with the Queen.

The vault seemed to breathe.

Allandra crossed to the rack and lifted a coil of leather from its hook.

Serali stared at it.

The whip was not ceremonial. The handle was worn smooth, the strap oiled dark, the tail split into two near the end. A practical thing. A tool that knew exactly what it was.

Serali’s thoughts separated from one another.

The whip.

The table.

The drain.

Allandra’s hand around the handle.

The distant ache in her wrists.

Everly’s voice saying, You look like you are going to cry.

Not now, Serali told herself.

Not in front of her.

Allandra turned back. “Here is what will happen.”

Serali’s eyes lifted.

The Queen stood with the whip loose at her side, every line of her body controlled, terrible, almost luminous in the dim vault. There was no pleasure in her face. That made it worse. This was not indulgence. Not temper. It was decision.

“I will hurt you,” Allandra said. “You will tell me what I want to know. Then you will die.”

She said it as if describing a battle plan.

A thing already decided.

Serali’s breath caught.

Not with fear.

With relief.

No more waiting. No more wondering what shape the blade would take. No more trying to convince a queen that accidents existed.

This, at least, she understood.

Serali nodded once. “Fine.”

Allandra went very still.

Serali saw the reaction and almost laughed. The Queen had wanted something from her. Panic, perhaps. Begging. One last frantic confession dragged from the body before the body became useless.

But Serali had learned long ago that sometimes the kindest thing a punishment offered was certainty.

Allandra’s fingers tightened around the whip.

“You have nothing else to say?”

Serali thought of the playroom. Of Everly’s small body planted between her and a door breaking inward. Of the girl’s serious voice asking if Serali was bad. Of the way she had believed Serali’s no more easily than any adult in this palace had believed anything.

Her throat tightened.

“I would not have hurt her,” Serali said.

Allandra’s face closed.

“That is all?”

Serali looked at the wall beyond the table and found the crack.

There.

A thin seam running crookedly from floor to ceiling, wavering once near the middle before branching into two narrow lines. It was not the same crack as the servants’ hall in Naerith. Not the same wall. Not the same country.

But it would do.

“Yes,” Serali said.

The word came from far away.

She shifted on her knees until the seam settled in the center of her vision. Her body knew what came next. It had known since before she had words for most things. Chin down. Shoulders loose. Do not tense before the strike; it tears worse. Count if counting helps. Leave if leaving is possible.

Find the crack.

Become the crack.

Allandra watched her. “What are you doing?”

“Waiting.”

“For what?”

Serali’s voice had gone distant, even to herself. “The first one is easier if I know when it’s coming.”

Silence.

Long enough that Serali wondered whether the Queen had understood.

Then Allandra said, very quietly, “Look at me.”

Serali did not.

The crack in the wall held.

“Serali.”

Her name in Allandra’s mouth should not have hurt.

It did.

The air changed.

Allandra moved behind her.

Serali felt it without looking: the shift of fabric, the faint warmth of Sun Fae magic, the controlled breath of a woman preparing to become what fear demanded of her.

Serali’s hands settled limp on her thighs.

The manacles clinked once.

Her body went quiet.

Allandra’s hand closed on the back of her tunic.

The fabric tightened at Serali’s throat.

Then tore.

The sound cracked through the vault like a snapped bone.

Cold air hit Serali’s back all at once.

She waited.

No strike came.

The silence after was worse.

Serali kept looking at the crack in the wall. She did not breathe too deeply. Did not move. Did not turn to see the Queen’s face. She knew what Allandra was seeing.

Everyone who saw her back reacted somehow.

Some with disgust. Some with satisfaction. Some with the peculiar curiosity of people who thought suffering became less real when arranged like evidence.

There was plenty to see.

Old white ridges crossing from shoulder blade to hip. Raised knots where lashes had overlapped too many times. Thin red lines from newer punishments, reopened by the dungeon and the escape. Burns, some round, some splashed. A branded mark near her ribs, half-warped by later scarring.

A history written in a language no one wanted to admit they could read.

Allandra’s breathing changed.

Just one breath, too sharp on the inhale and too controlled on the exhale.

Serali closed her eyes.

Do it, she thought.

Do it and be done.

A hand touched her back.

Flat.

Warm.

Not a blow.

Serali left.

It was not a decision. It was not even escape. Escape required a place to go, and there was no place, not really. There was only the crack in the wall.

So she went there.

Into the seam.

The vault loosened around her. The torch-smell thinned. The cold became something happening to a body that might have been hers once, or might have belonged to someone else entirely. The hand on her back disappeared first. Then the table. The whip. The Queen. The manacles. The torn tunic hanging from her shoulders.

All of it fell away.

Only the crack remained.

Small.

Crooked.

Holding.

Serali stayed there.

Somewhere far beyond the wall, a door may have opened.

Somewhere, a voice may have spoken.

Somewhere, the world may have continued without her.

Serali did not hear it.

She was inside the crack now.

And the crack, at least, asked nothing of her.

Outside the vault, Allandra stumbled three steps down the corridor before her stomach rebelled. She caught herself against the wall and vomited hard onto the stones, one hand braced against the mortar, the other clenched so tightly around the whip that the leather creaked.

Daravan appeared at her side.

Not running. Not hesitating. Simply there, as he always was when the world went wrong.

“Majesty?”

“Don’t,” Allandra said.

Her voice was raw enough that he obeyed.

She wiped her mouth with the back of her hand, breathing through the acid and the shame and the image of Serali’s back burned white behind her eyes.

Daravan’s gaze flicked once toward the closed door.

“Do you want me to—”

“No.”

The word cracked out of her.

He stilled.

Allandra straightened, though the corridor seemed to tilt beneath her. “No. Not you. Not anyone.”

Daravan’s jaw tightened. “Majesty—”

“She expected it,” Allandra said.

The words came out before she could shape them into something queenly.

Daravan said nothing.

“She knew how to take it.” Allandra swallowed hard. “She was waiting. Like it was already done. Like I was only late.”

The silence after that was worse than any question.

Allandra looked at the whip in her hand.

Then dropped it.

She drew herself upright by force. Queen. Mother. Mantle. Woman who had almost become exactly what fear demanded of her.

Her voice, when she spoke again, was not steady.

But it was command.

“Fetch Lia,” Allandra said. “And no one touches her again.”
