The Queen's Mage

Daravan did not look at the whip on the floor.

That was one of his better qualities. He could ignore a great many things when survival required it: blood, vomit, fear, the Queen of Avalusia standing in a corridor below her own palace with her hand braced against the wall and her face stripped of every polished inch of majesty.

Allandra hated him for that.

She was also grateful.

“Fetch Lia,” she said again, because command felt safer when repeated. “Now.”

Daravan turned to the nearest guard, a young man stationed stiffly at the bend in the corridor. The boy’s eyes were fixed somewhere over Allandra’s shoulder with the desperate obedience of someone who knew better than to see anything.

“You heard her,” Daravan said. “The royal healer. Wake her if you have to. Run.”

The guard ran.

His boots struck the steps too loudly, fading upward in panicked echoes.

Allandra wiped her mouth with the back of her hand again, though there was nothing left but the taste of bile and shame. Her stomach still rolled. She forced it quiet. She had commanded armies through worse. She had stood in halls full of bodies and decided who could be saved and who had already become history. She had buried her parents and her husband and worn green silk to council the next morning because Avalusia required a queen before it required a mourner.

She would not come apart because of one prisoner’s back.

Except she already had.

Daravan waited until the last echo of the guard’s steps vanished. “Majesty.”

“No.”

“I haven’t said anything.”

“You were about to.”

He accepted that with a small tilt of the head. “I was about to ask whether you wanted the prisoner moved before Lia arrives.”

“No.”

“The vault is not fit for treatment.”

“The vault is not fit for anything.”

His gaze flicked to her face. “Then perhaps—”

“No one touches her,” Allandra said. “Not until Lia sees her.”

Daravan’s jaw tightened.

There. The disagreement. Controlled, respectful, and irritatingly reasonable before it ever became words.

Allandra turned on him. “Say it.”

He did not pretend not to understand. “There are techniques, Majesty.”

Her stomach clenched.

“Do not.”

“I am not advocating for them.”

“You are standing in front of me with that face and telling me there are techniques.”

“I am saying Xuiven agents have been known to alter the body. Scars can be made. Histories can be written into skin. Some do it to earn trust. Some to survive capture. Some because their handlers carve loyalty into them before sending them out.”

Allandra stared at him.

Daravan’s face did not move.

He was not cruel. That was what made the words worse. He was doing exactly what she had trained him to do: find the trap, name the risk, distrust the thing most likely to make her hesitate.

She had made him good at this.

“I know,” she said.

“Then you know we cannot assume—”

“I said I know.”

The corridor went silent.

From beyond the closed vault door came nothing.

No voice. No movement. No clink of chains.

Allandra looked toward it, and the lack of sound tightened something inside her chest.

“She is not performing,” she said quietly.

Daravan said nothing.

“She did not try to make me see. She was gone before I touched her.”

“Shock can be feigned.”

“Yes.”

“So can surrender.”

“Yes.”

“So can fear.”

Allandra looked back at him. “Can absence?”

That made him pause.

Good.

She needed him to pause, because if he kept speaking in that calm, practical voice, she might have to decide whether to scream or strike him, and neither would improve the evening.

Daravan followed her gaze to the door.

“No,” he said at last. “Not easily.”

Allandra closed her eyes.

The image returned anyway.

Serali kneeling, eyes fixed on the crack in the wall.

Fine.

The word had chilled the room more than the stone ever could.

Not defiance. Not surrender, either. Agreement. A woman accepting the order of events because the order was familiar: she would be hurt, she would talk or not talk, and then she would die. Allandra had meant the threat to break through the lies. Instead, it had found something already broken and laid itself neatly beside the rest.

“She expected it,” Allandra said.

Daravan’s expression changed by almost nothing.

“She expected me to hurt her,” Allandra continued. “Not feared. Not guessed. Expected. Like I was only following a script.”

Daravan’s voice was lower when he answered. “That does not mean she is innocent.”

“No.” Allandra opened her eyes. “It means someone taught her the script.”

The silence after that had weight.

Daravan’s gaze dropped, finally, to the whip on the stones.

Then away.

“Lia will know,” Allandra said.

“She will.”

“And if it is a trick, she will tell me.”

“Yes.”

Allandra swallowed against the taste in her mouth. “I do not think it is a trick.”

Daravan did not argue this time.

Footsteps sounded above: uneven, brisk, unmistakable. Lia did not run. Lia had never run for anyone in her life. She arrived quickly enough to save a life, slowly enough to make clear that panic was for people with less work to do.

The royal healer came into view with her leather case in one hand and her gray cloak fastened crookedly over her nightclothes. Her white hair had been braided for sleep, not court, and several wisps escaped around her temples. She took in the corridor at once: the guard posted too rigidly, the whip on the floor, the sour smell of vomit, Daravan’s expression, Allandra’s face.

Her mouth flattened.

“Majesty,” she said.

It was not greeting.

It was indictment.

Allandra straightened. “Lia.”

“Where is she?”

Allandra looked at the vault door.

Lia’s eyes followed.

Then she saw the whip.

For one moment, no one moved.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

Lia crossed to it, picked it up between two fingers as if it were something dead and unpleasant found in a child’s bed, and held it out to Daravan without looking at him.

“Remove this.”

Daravan took it.

He looked faintly startled.

Good, Allandra thought distantly. Someone else could be startled for a while.

Lia moved to the door. “Open it.”

Allandra reached for the latch herself.

Daravan stepped forward. “Majesty—”

Lia turned her head. “Captain, unless the door is diseased, she does not require assistance with it.”

Daravan stopped.

Allandra opened the door.

The vault waited in torchlit silence.

The prisoner had not moved.

She remained on her knees near the center of the floor, manacled hands loose in her lap, torn tunic hanging from her shoulders. Her back was still exposed to the cold. Her head was bowed slightly, but not in prayer or exhaustion. Her eyes were open, fixed on the crack in the wall beyond the iron table.

She did not blink.

Allandra’s throat tightened.

Lia entered and stopped.

Only briefly.

Then she crossed the room with the terrible efficiency of a woman who had seen enough horrors to resent every new one for being unoriginal.

“What is her name?” Lia asked.

Allandra’s mouth felt dry. “Serali.”

“Serali,” Lia said, not loudly. “Can you hear me?”

No response.

Lia crouched in front of the prisoner, following the line of her gaze to the wall, then murmured, “Ah. There you are.”

Allandra stood at the threshold.

The words landed strangely.

There you are.

As if Serali had gone somewhere. As if Lia could see the place.

Lia opened her case on the floor and withdrew a small lens, a vial, and a strip of clean cloth. “I need light.”

Allandra lifted a hand.

A sun-orb formed above her palm, gold and steady, then drifted into the vault. Lia glanced at it, then nodded once.

“Closer. Not warmer.”

Allandra obeyed.

Lia touched two fingers beneath Serali’s jaw.

Serali did not react.

Her pulse fluttered hard under the healer’s hand. Too fast. Too shallow.

“She’s in shock,” Lia said.

Daravan had come to stand just inside the door, one hand on his sword hilt, though not drawn.

Lia looked at him. “Do not loom. You’re large enough without effort.”

His brows lifted.

Allandra almost laughed.

The sound never made it to her throat.

Lia waved the vial beneath Serali’s nose. Nothing. She snapped once near Serali’s ear. Serali’s pupils shifted, but her gaze did not leave the crack.

“Dissociated,” Lia said. “Deeply.”

Allandra’s fingers curled at her sides.

“Can you bring her back?”

“Yes.” Lia’s tone made the word neither comfort nor promise. “But I would rather not do it here while she is kneeling half-naked on freezing stone.”

She placed two fingers gently at Serali’s temple and spoke under her breath.

The language was not High Solvari. Not the court-healer’s clipped formal register. It was older, rougher, a low slurred patois that sounded like snowmelt moving beneath ice.

Serali blinked.

Once.

Then again.

Her eyes moved from the crack to Lia’s face, unfocused but nearer. Her breath caught, as if some distant part of her had remembered lungs.

“Good,” Lia said. “Not all the way. Just enough.”

She looked up then.

At Allandra.

The disappointment in her face was calm, old, and devastating.

Allandra could have borne anger better.

“Get her on the table,” Lia said.

Daravan moved first.

Lia snapped, “Carefully.”

He stopped, recalibrated, then crouched beside Serali.

“Serali,” he said.

Her eyes did not move to him, but her fingers twitched.

“Serali,” Allandra said before she could stop herself.

That, somehow, reached.

Only barely.

Serali’s gaze shifted toward her.

Not focused.

Not present.

But the recognition passed through her face like a shadow crossing glass.

Then fear followed it.

Lia’s voice sharpened. “No. None of that. Table, Captain.”

Daravan slid one arm beneath Serali’s shoulders and another beneath her knees. When he lifted, the manacles clanged against each other, and Serali’s body gave one faint, useless twitch. Not resistance. Memory.

Allandra had to look away for half a breath.

When she looked back, Daravan had laid Serali face down on the iron table. Lia moved with him, guiding Serali’s head to the side so she could breathe, arranging the torn tunic only enough to preserve what modesty remained without hiding the wounds that needed examination.

Serali’s cheek rested against the table.

Her eyes remained open.

Half-focused.

Too aware now, or nearly.

“Manacles off,” Lia said.

Daravan hesitated.

Lia did not look at him. “Captain.”

“She is a mage.”

“She is half-conscious, injured, in shock, and lying face down on a table that should have been melted for scrap two reigns ago.”

“She may wake.”

“And if she does, I would prefer not to explain why we left iron eating through open wounds.”

Daravan looked to Allandra.

Allandra heard the question under the glance.

Risk?

She looked at Serali’s wrists.

The skin beneath the cuffs was swollen, ulcerated, raw where the iron had bitten and the escape had torn it worse. The sight made her nauseous again, but there was nothing left in her stomach.

“Take them off,” she said.

Daravan unlocked the manacles.

They fell away with a heavy clatter.

Serali flinched.

Not fully. Not enough to rise. But enough that her breath hitched and her eyes found Allandra again.

Her body tried to curl inward, even face down, even half-trapped beneath Lia’s steady hands.

Lia swore softly.

“No,” she said, and this time there was command in it. “You are not staying there.”

She pressed her palm to Serali’s forehead and spoke the old words again, firmer than before. The sound moved through the vault, low and steady, wrapping around Serali’s panicked breath until it slowed.

Serali fought it for a heartbeat.

Then two.

Then her eyes slid closed.

Her body went slack.

Not into the crack.

Not away.

Asleep.

Lia exhaled. “Better.”

Allandra found her own voice with difficulty. “What did you do?”

“I calmed her properly and put her under. I will not leave anyone dissociated if I have the skill to prevent it.” Lia’s eyes cut to her. “And I do.”

There was no mistaking the target of that sentence.

Allandra accepted the blow because it was deserved.

Daravan set the manacles aside.

Lia did not look at them. “Farther.”

He moved them to the wall.

“Farther than that.”

He picked them up again and put them outside the door.

Only then did Lia begin.

She bent over Serali’s wrists first, because Lia always worked in order of immediate threat rather than dramatic significance. She unwrapped the ruined cloth someone had tied there days before, then hissed softly through her teeth.

“Infection risk,” she said. “Circulation impaired. Sensation?”

No one answered.

Lia looked briefly irritated by reality.

She pinched the inside of Serali’s wrist.

Nothing.

She pressed harder.

Serali’s fingers twitched.

“Some response,” Lia said. “Good enough for now.”

Allandra stepped closer despite herself.

Lia did not tell her to stop.

That was almost worse.

The healer cleaned the wounds with a solution that smelled sharply green. Rosemary, salt, and something medicinal enough to sting the air. Serali’s fingers jerked again when the liquid touched raw flesh, but her face did not change.

Lia looked at Serali’s back next.

Not quickly. Not with theatrical horror. She bent near, lens in hand, and began the work of reading skin.

“Old lash marks,” she said. “Many reopened. Some poorly healed. Burns. Brands. Chemical exposure. Repeated infection at some point, here and here.”

She touched the air above each place without touching the scar itself.

Allandra appreciated that.

Hated that there was something to appreciate.

“These are real,” Lia said.

Daravan was very still.

Allandra did not look at him.

“No glamour?” she asked.

Lia’s eyes cut to her.

“No.”

“No chemical alteration?”

“Not unless someone invented a method to fake a century of scar tissue, nerve damage, malnutrition, and old infection, then decided the best use of it was to place the result in your dungeon and hope you eventually noticed.”

Daravan’s mouth tightened.

Lia’s gaze moved to him next. “Yes, Captain. I know the manuals.”

He said nothing.

Lia returned to her examination. “These are not the hands of a pampered court mage or a soldier. Lye damage. Repeated. Laundry, floors, kitchens perhaps. Grip calluses from tools and scrubbing. Not swordwork. Not formal combat.”

Allandra thought of her own certainty in the dungeon.

Hands that had seen violence.

She had mistaken labor for training.

She had mistaken survival for threat.

That had been the pattern since the beginning.

Lia drew a small blade from her kit and cut the remnants of Serali’s tunic away from the worst of the dried blood. As she did, a folded scrap of paper slid from the garment’s inner lining and fluttered to the floor at Daravan’s boot.

He bent automatically.

Then stopped.

The paper lay face-up, creased and stained from weeks of being hidden against Serali’s body. Daravan picked it up with two fingers, unfolded it, and went very still.

Allandra looked at him.

“Captain.”

He did not answer at once.

Then he held it out.

The paper was not a coded message.

Not a map.

Not an assassination order.

It was a ticket.

The script was cheap, hurried, written in the loose hand of the lower docks. Passage paid under a false name, departure marked for the morning after the Harvest Festival. A freighter bound south across the Servalen Sea, first port beyond Avalusian waters listed in a cramped notation near the bottom.

A ship.

A real one.

Leaving.

Allandra read it once.

Then again.

The room seemed to tilt around her.

I came to leave.

Serali had said it in the dungeon, bruised and bleeding and ironed to a wall.

Allandra had not believed her.

Daravan stared at the ticket in Allandra’s hand, all the color drained from his face. His voice, when it came, was almost too quiet to hear.

“She had passage.”

Allandra could not make herself answer.

The paper weighed nothing.

It felt heavier than the whip.

Lia looked over from the table. “What is it?”

Allandra folded the ticket slowly along its original crease. Her fingers were very steady. That was how she knew the shock had gone deep.

“Proof,” she said.

Daravan’s jaw worked once.

Of all the things she had expected to see in his face; suspicion, recalculation, that cool tactical withdrawal into possibility, horror had not been one of them.

But there it was.

Not dramatic.

Not soft.

Horror, clean and silent, moving behind his eyes as he looked from the ticket to Serali’s motionless body on the table.

Allandra handed the ticket back to him.

“Keep it.”

He took it as if it might cut him.

Lia watched them both for half a breath, then returned to Serali. “Later. Guilt is not going to clean this knee.”

Allandra looked down.

Serali’s left knee was swollen, the skin hot and tight around a cut that had darkened at the edges. Lia sliced the wound open with a single precise motion. Pus welled out first, yellow-white and foul, followed by thin blood.

Daravan looked away.

Allandra did not.

She made herself watch.

Lia pressed a cloth over the wound, then another, muttering under her breath about filth, stairs, and people who thought infection respected political urgency. She irrigated the cut with more of the sharp green solution, packed it with a dark poultice, and wrapped the joint tightly.

“She has been walking on this?” Lia asked.

“She escaped on it,” Daravan said quietly.

Lia’s mouth flattened. “Of course she did.”

She continued the examination with the same brisk fury. “Shoulder mobility limited by old injury. Ribs bruised. Knee infected, now drained. Sleep deprived. Undernourished, though not recently starving. How long has she been in custody?”

“Two weeks,” Daravan said.

Lia looked at Allandra.

Allandra held her gaze.

The healer’s disappointment deepened.

“Two weeks,” Lia repeated.

No one answered.

Lia packed the wrist wounds with poultice and wrapped them in linen. Her movements remained exact, but there was anger in every economy. When she finished, she rested one hand lightly on Serali’s shoulder blade, avoiding the scars.

Then she looked at Allandra.

“Do you want her to live?”

The question struck harder than accusation would have.

Allandra opened her mouth.

No sound came.

She looked at Serali: face turned to the side, hair dark against the iron table, back ruined by a history Allandra had almost added to because fear had worn the mask of duty and she had believed it.

“Yes,” Allandra managed.

It was barely more than breath.

Lia nodded once, as if that was all she had needed.

“Then she needs to be moved. Somewhere warm. Somewhere clean. With light. She needs to be washed, dressed, fed when she can keep food down, and left asleep until I decide otherwise.”

Allandra nodded.

“No iron,” Lia said.

Daravan’s gaze flicked to her.

Lia did not soften. “No iron. If you insist on restraints, leather. Padded. Loose enough not to damage the skin. Silk cord if she must be tethered, not chain. And if anyone puts metal against those wrists again, I will make sure they cannot hold a spoon for a month.”

Daravan looked as if he was not entirely sure whether that applied to him.

Good, Allandra thought.

Let him wonder.

Lia closed her case, though her hand remained on Serali’s shoulder.

“She is not to be woken,” Lia said. “Not by you. Not by guards. Not by questions. Not because someone feels guilty and wants reassurance from the woman they frightened out of her own body.”

Allandra flinched.

Lia’s gaze remained merciless.

“When she wakes, it will be because I decide her body can bear it.”

Allandra swallowed.

“Yes,” she said.

Lia looked at Daravan. “Bring men who can carry without jostling. And blankets. Warm ones. If I see anyone drag her, I will consider it a personal insult.”

Daravan inclined his head.

“Understood.”

“Good,” Lia said. “Now move.”
