The Queen's Mage

By the second day of Allandra’s absence, Serali understood the shape of the silence.

It was not neglect.

Neglect had a texture. Neglect was cold food and unchanged linens, guards who forgot water until thirst made the tongue swell, bruises left to fester because no one cared whether the skin healed clean. Neglect was familiar. Almost honest.

This was not that.

This was care with a locked door.

The first change came with breakfast.

Not the meal itself: sliced pears in honey, soft cheese, bread still warm enough that steam curled when she tore it open. The change was in the manner of its delivery.

The same maid came in with the guard at her back, set the tray on the table, and curtsied.

“Good morning,” she said.

Serali stared at her.

The maid swallowed, but did not look away as quickly as she used to. “I was told to ask whether you prefer tea or cider with the morning meal.”

Serali looked at the tray. Then at the maid. Then at the guard.

The guard said nothing. His face was turned carefully toward the window.

Serali’s fingers flexed against the cord at her wrist.

Sometime in the night, someone had removed the restraint on her left wrist and replaced the one on her right.

The old length had allowed her to sit, sleep, and reach the side table if she stretched far enough to make her shoulder ache. This one gave her nearly half the room.

Half the room.

A kingdom’s worth of mercy.

“What?” Serali said.

“Tea or cider,” the maid repeated. “Unless you would prefer water.”

Serali narrowed her eyes. “Is this a test?”

“No.”

“You answered very quickly.”

“Because I know the answer.”

That surprised Serali enough that she almost forgot to be difficult.

The maid’s mouth tightened, as if she had surprised herself too.

Serali leaned back against the pillows. “Tea.”

The maid nodded. “With milk? Honey?”

Another choice.

Another thread in whatever net they were weaving.

“No milk,” Serali said. “Honey separate.”

“It usually comes separate now.”

“Does it?”

The maid busied herself with the teapot, cheeks coloring faintly. “You did not use it when I stirred it in.”

Serali watched her.

She remembered that. When she had been too drugged and exhausted to sit upright, the maid had sweetened the tea before bringing it to the bed. Serali had not drunk it. The next day, the honey had come in a dish.

Observation. Adjustment. No announcement.

That was worse than cruelty in some ways. Cruelty had edges. You could brace against it.

The maid poured the tea and set the honey beside it.

“There is also pear.”

“I see that.”

“And bread.”

“I see that too.”

The maid’s mouth twitched.

It was very small. A mistake, perhaps.

Serali pointed at the tray. “If you start listing the plate and cup, I’ll worry for you.”

The maid’s eyes flicked up, startled.

Then, impossibly, she smiled.

Only for a second.

The guard, still facing the window, developed a sudden fascination with the curtain rod.

The maid smoothed her apron. “I will return for the tray.”

“I was going to throw it through the window, actually.”

“It is locked.”

“The tray?”

“The window.”

Serali stared at her.

The maid looked as if she might die of having said it.

Then Serali laughed once, sharp and unwilling.

The maid’s shoulders lowered by the smallest amount.

After breakfast, Lia came.

The healer did not ask permission to enter, but when she approached the bed and Serali jerked her hand away on instinct, Lia merely stopped.

“May I?” Lia asked.

Serali stared at her.

The question sat in the room like an animal that had wandered in by mistake.

“You’re asking?”

“I am.”

“Why?”

“Because it is your wrist.”

Serali almost laughed. The sound caught somewhere between her ribs and her throat, sharp enough to hurt.

“My wrist is tied to your queen’s bedpost.”

Lia’s expression did not change. “Yes.”

“So the concept of ownership feels a little confused.”

“Perhaps.” Lia held out one hand, palm up. “May I examine it anyway?”

There it was again.

May.

Not hold still. Not give me your hand. Not this is what has been decided.

May.

Serali looked at Lia’s hand for a long moment.

Then, because refusing would be childish and because agreeing felt like surrender and because she had no idea which option would hurt less, she placed her wrist in Lia’s palm.

The healer unwrapped the bandage with precise, irritating gentleness. The skin beneath was still raw, but no longer wet. The swelling had gone down. Sensation had returned to two fingers on her right hand, though the third still tingled if she bent it too fast.

Lia made an approving sound.

“Better,” she said.

“I’m touched by its loyalty.”

“The scabbing is clean. You may be able to leave the bandages off for part of the day.”

Serali’s attention sharpened. “May?”

Lia looked at her.

Serali heard it clearly now. The shape of the word. The careful placement of it.

Lia reached into her case and produced two small jars. “This one will numb the ache, but it smells unpleasant. This one will not numb as effectively, but it will draw out heat and help the skin close.”

Serali looked from one jar to the other.

“You’re letting me choose the salve.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Lia’s mouth tilted faintly. “Because both are medically acceptable, and I have no personal affection for either.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the answer I have.”

Serali chose the one that did not numb, because numbness had always frightened her more than pain.

Lia applied it without comment.

Later, the maid returned and asked whether Serali wanted fish stew or roasted vegetables for supper.

Serali, who had been sitting in the chair by the fire with the cord looped around her wrist like an insult, looked up slowly.

The author’s content has been appropriated; report any instances of this story on Amazon.

“You again.”

“Yes.”

“Do they not employ anyone else?”

“They do.”

“And yet.”

The maid glanced at the guard, then back. “Her Majesty gave instructions that your attendants not be changed unless necessary.”

Of course she had.

No new faces. No new risks. No loose tongues. No one else allowed close enough to notice too much.

Serali told herself this was strategy and nothing more.

It still landed somewhere inconvenient.

“Roasted vegetables,” she said.

The maid nodded.

“And no cider.”

“I brought water.”

“Did you drink from it first?”

The maid hesitated, then took the cup, poured a small amount, and drank without complaint.

Serali watched her throat move.

“You were ready for that.”

“You asked yesterday.”

“I could have poisoned you yesterday.”

“You did not.”

“Maybe I’m patient.”

The maid set the cup beside her. “Then I suppose I will find out gradually.”

Serali blinked.

The maid lowered her eyes at once, but the corner of her mouth betrayed her.

The quiet one had a spine after all.

Interesting.

She turned to leave, then hesitated with one hand on the tray.

“What?” Serali asked.

The maid drew a breath. “My name is Mara.”

Serali stared at her.

The room went very still.

The name hung there, small and ordinary and enormous.

Mara’s hands tightened around the edge of her apron. “You asked before.”

A name now.

Serali looked away first.

“Mara,” she said, testing it.

The maid’s shoulders loosened. “Yes.”

“Is that supposed to make me less likely to hit you with the cup?”

“No.”

“Good. Because it won’t.”

Mara’s mouth twitched again. “I will keep that in mind.”

At dusk, Mara returned to collect the tray.

She paused at the door. “Would you like the lamps lit now?”

Serali’s fingers tightened against the chair.

The room was not dark yet. Only dimming. Shadows had begun to gather in the corners, blue and soft.

Mara did not look at them.

She looked at Serali.

Another choice.

Serali’s mouth went dry.

“Yes,” she said, hating the smallness of it.

Mara nodded as if the answer were ordinary.

Then she lit every lamp.

Not just the one by the bed. Every lamp. The two near the fire. The one on the writing desk Serali was not allowed to use. The little glass lantern by the washstand. She trimmed each wick with the scissors from her belt and tucked them away again before Serali could decide whether taking them was worth the risk.

When the last lamp caught, something in Serali’s chest unclenched so quickly she had to look away.

Mara pretended not to notice.

That was kindness too.

Damn her.

After Mara left, Serali stood in the center of the room and stared at the lights.

Allandra had remembered.

No.

Maybe Lia. Maybe Mara. Maybe some line in Daravan’s notes: prisoner displays fear response to darkness; maintain lamps.

That was all.

It was not kindness if written as procedure.

It was not tenderness if ordered for security.

Still, the light stayed.

Chapter 42: The Bath

The bath came the next afternoon.

Serali heard it before she saw it: the slosh of water in buckets, the scrape of copper over stone, the low murmur of servants trying to move quietly and failing because hot water had its own opinion about secrecy.

Her body went rigid before her mind caught up.

The room vanished.

For one breath she was back in Lyehira, knees on black stone, hands on her shoulders, cold water pouring over her head while Vandra’s voice counted time in its crisp, procedural way. Not enough to drown. Never enough to end anything. Only enough to teach the body that breath was a privilege someone else could interrupt.

The door opened.

Mara stepped in first.

She saw Serali’s face and stopped.

Behind her, two servants carried a copper tub between them. A guard stood in the doorframe, trying to look like furniture with a sword.

“The bath is for you,” Mara said carefully. “Behind the screen.”

Serali’s eyes moved to the tub.

Mara continued, softer, “You may bathe yourself. No one will stay unless you ask.”

The words were simple.

The effect was not.

Serali looked at the guard.

“He will wait outside,” Mara said.

The guard, to his credit, did not wait to be told twice. He stepped into the corridor and turned his back before leaving the door half-closed. Not shut. Never shut. But enough.

The tub was brought in. The water followed, steaming in buckets that filled the room with warmth. Mara arranged towels on the chair beside the screen, then set two gowns across the bed: one green, one brown.

“You may choose either,” she said. “Or keep the shift, if you prefer.”

Serali’s eyes moved to the gowns.

“You are trying very hard to say may today.”

Mara stilled.

Serali looked at her.

The woman’s face had gone carefully blank, but not before something passed across it. Embarrassment, maybe. Or recognition.

“It was in the instructions,” Mara admitted.

Serali’s mouth twisted. “Of course it was.”

“Yes.” Mara looked down at the towels, then back up. “But I do not mind saying it.”

That answer was harder to file.

Serali hated things that were hard to file.

Mara turned to leave, then paused. “The cord is long enough to reach the screen. I was told not to untie it unless you need help.”

“How generous.”

Mara did not flinch. “Would you like help?”

“No.”

“Then I’ll wait outside.”

She left before Serali could find something worse to say.

The servants followed. The door remained half-closed. The guard’s shadow fell across the threshold, turned away, stiff with the effort not to listen.

Serali stood alone with the bathwater steaming behind the screen and Mara’s name still sitting in the room like a candle no one had asked for.

She should not have told me that, Serali thought.

Names made people easier to hurt.

Names made people harder to dismiss.

She undressed slowly, clumsy with the wrist-cord. The tether dragged over the floorboards as she moved behind the screen. It caught once on the bedpost, and she nearly laughed at the absurdity of it: a prisoner granted privacy, so long as privacy stayed within reach of a knot.

The shift came over her head with difficulty. Cool air touched the scars on her back.

No one gasped.

No one commented.

No one looked.

Serali stood there for a moment, naked and alone and furious at the sudden pressure behind her eyes.

Then she stepped into the tub.

The heat wrapped around her ankles first, then her calves, then her bruised knees as she lowered herself inch by careful inch. Her ribs protested. Her back burned where healing skin met water. Her wrists throbbed above the surface.

Then, slowly, her body gave up pretending it did not want this.

The warmth took her.

It loosened something old and animal in her muscles. The water lapped at her hips, her stomach, the hollow between her breasts. Steam curled against her face. Her body, traitorous thing, softened despite every warning her mind gave it.

She hated, with abrupt and humiliating force, how good it felt.

The water turned cloudy around her. Dirt first. Old sweat. Then the faint pink thread of reopened scabs.

Serali washed carefully.

Under the arms. Behind the ears. Between fingers. The places Vandra used to inspect. The places palace women had found reasons to mock. The places she had learned to clean fast, with cold water and no mirror.

The soap slipped once from her hand and bobbed against her thigh.

She stared at it.

Then she laughed.

It was not a good laugh. It was too quiet, too close to breaking. But it was a laugh, and there was no one in the room to hear it, so she let it happen.

A bath. A choice of gowns. Honey separate. Lamps lit before dark. A maid named Mara.

They were civilizing the cage.

Or decorating it.

The thought steadied her.

Serali got out before the water cooled. She dried herself with the towel and chose the brown gown because the green one was too close to Allandra’s eyes.

Then she hated herself for thinking it.

Allandra.

The name came too easily now.

Not the Queen. Not Luina. Not the Mantle. Allandra, as if the woman had any right to exist in Serali’s thoughts without title or blade.

She had not come.

For two days, she had not come.

At first Serali told herself it was relief. No interrogations. No cool green gaze stripping the skin from her lies. No questions asked softly enough to sound like concern. No queen standing too close to the bed while Serali pretended not to notice the way the room changed around her.

But relief should have felt lighter.

This felt like listening for a footstep that never arrived.

The silence had weight.

Worse, it had intention.

They knew who she was. They had to. Allandra had walked out with the truth in her hands, and Daravan had followed with the face of a man who had seen a border collapse.

Now they were deciding.

What did one do with King Vulmar’s bastard daughter?

The obvious things came first.

Trade her.

Hide her.

Question her until she emptied.

Announce her capture and dare Lyehira to deny the blood.

Use her to bargain for prisoners, land, apology, gold, revenge.

Kill her quietly and scatter her ashes into the same sea she had meant to cross.

Serali dressed herself in the brown gown with clumsy fingers.

It fit better than she wanted. Soft wool, plain cut, no ornament except a line of bronze stitching at the sleeves. Someone had guessed her size or measured her while she slept.

She decided not to think about which.

When she emerged from behind the screen, Mara was not there. Good. That was good. Serali had not wanted help, and help had not come.

The wrist-cord had been changed again that morning. Longer than before. She could reach the window now, if she moved carefully. She could sit in the chair by the fire. She could pace from the wardrobe to the washstand, then back again.

She could move enough to remember movement.

Not enough to leave.

That was the genius of it.

A starving person would thank you for crumbs. A beaten dog would lick the hand that struck less often. A prisoner given half a room might begin to think half a room was mercy instead of architecture.

Serali walked to the window.

The latch was small, brass, shaped like a curling leaf. She studied it while pretending to study the view. Two floors down, perhaps three if the eastern wing was built over the old service level. The drop was not impossible. Terrible, yes. Bone-breaking if done badly. But not impossible.

The window opened outward. Hinges on the left. The frame was old glass set into sun-bright metal, probably reinforced with magic. The latch itself might bend if struck hard enough with the fire poker. The cord at her wrist would not reach far enough for a proper swing.

She looked at the bedpost.

Carved wood. Heavy. Too heavy to break. The knot at her wrist was tied well, but not cruelly. A sailor’s knot, maybe. Or a soldier’s. The cord itself was silk wrapped around something stronger. It would not tear by hand.

Could it burn?

She glanced toward the fire.

Maybe.

If she held it to flame long enough. If the guard did not smell smoke.

She filed it away.

The screen could be pushed against the door. The chair, too. Not enough to stop a guard, but enough to buy seconds. The porcelain plate from breakfast had a clean edge. If broken, it would cut. The goblet was heavier than it looked.

And Mara carried small scissors on her belt for trimming candlewicks.

Small. Sharp. Easy to miss.

Serali did not like that she knew Mara’s name now. It made stealing from her feel different.

Not impossible.

Just different.

Near dusk, Mara returned with supper.

She did not comment on the brown dress. She did not comment on the window. She moved with the calm care of someone who had decided not to be afraid in obvious ways.

At the door, she paused.

“Would you like the lamps lit now?”

Serali looked at her.

Mara looked back, patient and ordinary and infuriating.

“Yes,” Serali said.

Mara lit every lamp again.

After she left, the night stretched.

Serali tried to sleep in the bed and failed. The sheets were too clean. The pillow too soft. The cord at her wrist too present and not present enough. In the dungeon, pain had given her something to push against. Here, comfort left too much space for thought.

She lay on her side, facing the window, and listened.

Guards changed at the outer door every four hours. She knew that by the rhythm of boots. Mara came in once after midnight to check the fire, moving on tiptoe as if Serali were a lady whose rest mattered. Serali pretended to sleep and counted each step.

No Allandra.

The thought appeared before she could stop it.

No Allandra.

She turned onto her back and stared at the canopy overhead.

This was captivity’s oldest trick, she told herself. Make the prisoner miss the interrogator because the interrogator is the only one who gives answers. Make hunger look like attachment. Make fear memorize the sound of one person’s footsteps and call it longing.

She knew better.

She did.

Her body did not care.

When she closed her eyes, Allandra was there.

Not as she had looked in the dungeon, gold light hard around her shoulders, voice cold enough to freeze marrow. Not even as she had looked at the foot of the bed, demanding truth with Daravan’s quill scratching nearby.

In sleep, Allandra stood at the edge of the sea.

Her hair was loose. The wind caught it, bright as sunlit wheat, and wings were unfurled behind her, not fully solid, not entirely light, but something in between. Gold-tipped, blurred at the edges, burning where they met the dark.

She did not speak.

She only looked at Serali with an expression too open to belong to any queen.

Serali hated the dream while it was happening.

She walked toward her anyway.

The sand beneath her feet was black at first, then pale. The sea made no sound. Allandra lifted one hand, not commanding, not beckoning.

Waiting.

Serali woke before she reached her.

She came awake with her heart racing, one hand clenched in the sheets and the other pulled tight against the cord at her wrist.

The room was dim but not dark. The lamps had burned low. The fire had collapsed into red coals. Outside the window, the sky was a deep, starless blue.

Serali sat up, breathing hard.

“No,” she whispered.

No answer came.

She pressed the heel of her hand to her chest, furious at the ache there. It was not pain, exactly. Not fear.

Something worse, because it had no clean use.

She did not want Allandra.

She could not want Allandra.

Wanting Allandra was a trap with green eyes and a locked door. Wanting Allandra was madness. Wanting Allandra was what happened when a starving woman was fed by the person holding the chain.

Serali threw back the covers and paced as far as the cord allowed.

Window. Bed. Fire. Table. Bed. Window.

The room held her gently.

That made it worse.

Near dawn, exhaustion dragged her back toward sleep. She fought it as long as she could, seated in the chair by the dying fire, wrist-cord looped over her lap.

Her last waking thought was practical: Mara’s scissors were returned to the left pocket of her apron after each wick was trimmed.

Her last thought before sleep took her completely was not practical at all.

It was Allandra’s voice, saying her name as if it hurt.

Serali dreamed of the sea again.

This time, when Allandra reached out, Serali took her hand.
