The Queen's Mage

By the fifth day, it was clear neither of them would break first.

Serali spent the hours between visits practicing answers.

At first aloud, because there was no one to hear but the stones. Then under her breath, because the guards changed shift more often than she liked. Then silently, in the private cadence of her own head, where every word could be weighed before it became a weapon someone else might use.

She recited her story in three versions.

The lie.

The half-truth.

And the one that would never be spoken.

The lie was simple: no one important, no one worth remembering, a glamour given by a nameless friend, a ship whose name she did not know, a passage ticket lost somewhere between market stones and guard hands.

The half-truth was harder: she had fled Lyehira. She had crossed the border hunted. She had come to Myrae to leave the continent. She had revealed herself because a girl was being hurt and no one else moved.

The truth was impossible.

Vulmar. Rania. Cillian. Khalen. The closet. The candle. Her father’s rooms before sunrise.

Bastard daughter of the Night Fae king.

There were some names that did not open doors.

They closed coffins.

So Serali rearranged the facts of her life into a puzzle that fit only one way and scattered the other pieces behind her. She left enough jagged edges to make herself look difficult, not enough to make herself look royal. She tried to sound angry when the truth would have sounded afraid. She tried to sound bored when fear was too obvious to hide.

It was exhausting.

Worse, it was beginning to become interesting.

That was the part she hated most.

The Queen came once a day, sometimes twice, never at the same hour. Morning, dusk, deep night when the corridor torches had burned low and Serali’s thoughts had begun to gnaw their own tails. Allandra asked questions already asked, but never quite the same way. She circled old answers as if they were fortifications, testing stone, mortar, the sound of hollowness behind the wall.

Who gave you the glamour?

Who taught you to shield?

Who helped you cross the border?

Who is your father?

Who sent you?

Why did they chase you?

What did you do?

Serali answered and did not answer. Allandra listened and did not believe her.

By the fifth day, Serali also knew the Queen’s silences.

That was inconvenient.

Allandra made few expressions, and the ones she allowed were small enough that most people probably mistook them for changes in light. A pause before a question meant she had noticed something. A softened voice meant danger, not mercy. The slight tilt of her head meant Serali had said something useful by accident. The faint narrowing of her eyes meant the Queen was amused and refusing to admit it.

Serali should not have been able to read her so easily.

She should not have looked for those signs.

She certainly should not have found herself listening for the stride beyond the door, marking the hour by the possibility of the Queen’s return.

She told herself it was strategy.

Of course it was strategy. The Queen was the only person who spoke to her like she was more than a thing to be stored. The Queen controlled the irons, the food, the water, the possibility of a trial or a blade. Looking forward to Allandra’s visits was not longing.

It was survival.

Poorly disguised survival, perhaps.

But survival all the same.

Allandra returned just after the morning meal, not that Serali had eaten much. The bread sat on the tray beside the untouched bowl, both going cold in the patient way of prison food. Serali had taken the water, because pride was useful only until thirst made it stupid.

The Queen wore white and gold, severe in cut, her hair braided back from her face in a pattern so perfect it looked impossible. She entered with no retinue this time, though Daravan stood beyond the door, his presence visible as a long shadow on the corridor wall. A faint blue shimmer hung at his fingertips, some guard-spell or ward ready to snap into shape if Serali did anything interesting.

Serali rose as the door opened, fists clenched.

She let her expression be blank, knowing it would read as insolence.

Allandra looked at the tray.

Then at her.

“You have not eaten.”

Serali shrugged, a gesture of little-girl indifference she had perfected in Rania’s rooms. “I was saving it for someone I disliked.”

The Queen’s mouth did not move.

Her eyes did.

There. Amusement, buried fast.

Serali’s chest warmed with a satisfaction so unwelcome she nearly scowled.

Allandra stepped farther into the cell. “You have not slept either.”

“Not much to dream about here.”

“That has not stopped most prisoners.”

“Most prisoners lack imagination.”

“Or they have more sense than to spend five days trying to outstare a wall.”

Serali lifted her chin. “The wall and I have an understanding.”

“I am sure it finds you charming.”

“I have been told I improve stone rooms by leaving them.”

This time, the Queen’s mouth almost curved.

Almost.

Then it was gone.

“I spoke with the harbor master,” Allandra said.

Serali’s pulse tightened.

She did not let it show.

“Did he enjoy that?”

“He enjoys very little. That made him easy to believe.”

“How unfortunate for him.”

“There was a ship scheduled to leave the morning after the festival,” Allandra continued. “A freighter bound first for Velken, then south. Low fare. No questions if paid in advance.”

Serali said nothing.

“You said you had passage.”

“I mentioned that.”

“You mentioned very little. Usually with the air of a person throwing knives at a closed door.”

“I assumed your Majesty preferred familiar forms of communication.”

There it was again.

That flicker.

Serali hated how much she wanted to catch it.

Taken from NovelFire, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

Allandra paced the length of the cell, never turning her back fully. “But there is no record of the name Serali on the ship’s ledger.”

“I used an alias, obviously.”

“The harbor master could not find anyone who recognized your description.”

“That is because I did not look like myself.”

Allandra’s gaze sharpened. “Convenient.”

“No,” Serali said. “True.”

A beat passed.

Allandra’s gaze moved to her hands. “You fight like someone who has had to.”

“You gathered all that from my posture?”

“And your boots. Your knife. Your map. Your hands. The way you watch doors. The way you avoid admitting you know court forms until you are too tired to hide them.”

Serali’s stomach turned.

The Queen had been collecting her piece by piece.

That should not have surprised her.

It did.

Allandra stopped in front of her. “These are not the actions of a trained spy, but they are not the actions of an ordinary criminal either.”

“I keep disappointing everyone on that point.”

“You are very practiced at being disappointing.”

“That is the kindest thing a queen has ever said to me.”

Allandra studied her.

Serali felt the words after she spoke them.

Too much.

Too close to something real.

The Queen noticed.

Of course she noticed.

“You speak Solvari well,” Allandra said, shifting before Serali could decide whether to regret it. “Not as a native. Your formal grammar is better than your street speech. Your insults are oddly translated. Every third sentence ends with a Naeric turn.”

Serali looked at her flatly. “I apologize for offending the language.”

“You were taught.”

“I listened.”

“You were taught.”

“People tell you everything if you shut up long enough.”

“And yet shutting up is not your strongest instinct.”

Serali’s mouth opened.

Closed.

The Queen’s eyes sharpened.

A hit, then.

Allandra enjoyed this too.

Not cruelly. Not the way Rania enjoyed a flinch, or Vandra enjoyed the arithmetic of pain. This was something cleaner and more dangerous: the satisfaction of matching a blade against another blade and finding it did not bend.

Serali recognized it because she felt it too.

That was worse.

Allandra stepped closer. “Who taught you?”

“No one worth remembering.”

“That answer has become tedious.”

“It was never intended to entertain.”

“You are wrong,” Allandra said.

Serali blinked.

The Queen’s expression remained composed, but there was the faintest glint beneath it now.

“You intend to entertain constantly. You use it to turn questions sideways. If I am irritated, I am less precise. If I am amused, I am less cruel. If I am curious, I keep you alive.”

The cell went very still.

Serali’s throat tightened.

Allandra’s voice softened. “It is not a bad strategy.”

The compliment landed like a bruise.

Serali hated it.

She wanted another.

“That almost sounded like approval,” she said.

“Do not grow ambitious.”

“Too late.”

Allandra’s gaze held hers for one dangerous second longer than necessary.

Then she moved on.

“You were hunted by your own people,” Allandra said.

Serali’s smile was thin. “We are a complex culture.”

“Why?”

“Perhaps they disliked my face.”

Allandra’s jaw shifted.

Not anger.

Not quite.

“You will give me a name,” she said. “Not yours. His. The man you are protecting. The one who helped you flee.”

Serali’s pulse jumped.

Cillian.

Khalen.

Both names rose like blood in her mouth.

She swallowed them.

“No.”

Allandra stilled.

A simple refusal was dangerous. Serali knew that. She had used too many clever dodges, too many sideways answers. No was cleaner. It also left less room to retreat.

The Queen’s eyes cooled. “No?”

“No.”

“You understand what that answer invites.”

“Yes.”

“And you give it anyway.”

“Yes.”

“Loyalty?”

Serali almost laughed.

What was loyalty, after all? Cillian waiting too long and then saving her anyway. Khalen riding north without looking back. Her father calling her daughter as soldiers dragged her away. Kira’s eyes through the pantry crack.

Loyalty was a room full of knives and one small candle.

“Debt,” she said.

Allandra watched her closely.

“That was nearly true.”

“It was true.”

“Nearly,” the Queen repeated.

Serali looked away first.

A mistake.

Allandra caught it.

“You ran from someone powerful,” Allandra said. “Powerful enough to send agents. Powerful enough to teach military shield-forms. Powerful enough that you would rather sit in my dungeon than speak their name.”

Serali said nothing.

“Who wants you dead?”

No answer.

“Who wants you returned?”

No answer.

Allandra crossed the last step between them. The iron bars separated them, but not by much. Serali could see the faint gold at the Queen’s throat again, the Mantle-light tucked beneath skin and silk like a banked star.

“You think silence protects them,” Allandra said.

Serali looked back sharply. “No.”

“Then what does it protect?”

Me.

The answer was so sudden and obvious that she hated herself for almost speaking it.

Allandra’s face changed.

Only slightly.

She had seen it anyway.

The Queen’s voice dropped. “Ah.”

Serali’s stomach clenched.

“Do not,” Serali said.

Allandra tilted her head.

“Do not what?”

“Do whatever you are doing with your face.”

“I was not aware I was doing anything.”

“You were about to understand something.”

“That offends you?”

“Usually.”

The Queen’s eyes held hers.

Then, almost softly, “You are not protecting the person who sent you.”

“I was not sent.”

“No,” Allandra said. “I am beginning to believe that.”

Serali’s breath caught before she could stop it.

There.

A crack in the wall.

Not trust.

Not freedom.

But a crack.

The Queen saw that too and withdrew half a step, as if both of them needed the distance.

“Do not mistake belief for safety,” Allandra said.

“I would never accuse a queen of being safe without evidence.”

Allandra’s mouth nearly betrayed her again.

Nearly.

Serali’s pulse did something humiliating.

The Queen’s face smoothed.

“Even if you were not sent,” Allandra said, “you are still dangerous.”

“So I keep hearing.”

“You threw shields without a circle. You burned through a glamour in front of half the lower market. You killed men at the border.”

“They were trying to take me back.”

“And if I decide to send you back?”

Serali went still.

Allandra watched the answer move through her.

Not the answer she gave.

The real one.

Serali’s hands curled, chains clinking softly.

“If you send me back,” she said, “you might as well save everyone time and cut my throat here.”

The words landed between them.

Allandra did not move.

Daravan’s shadow shifted beyond the door.

Serali kept her eyes on the Queen.

There was no use softening it. No use dressing it up as strategy or sarcasm. Some truths were too ugly to disguise.

Allandra’s voice, when it came, was very quiet.

“Who are you, Serali?”

A laugh scraped out of her.

Too tired.

Too bitter.

Too close to a sob.

“I have been practicing answers to that for five days.”

“And?”

“None of them are good.”

Allandra studied her.

For a moment, Serali thought she would press. That she would reach through the bars again, lift Serali’s chin, demand the name, the bloodline, the secret, the answer hidden under every refusal.

Instead, the Queen stepped back.

“You will remain here.”

Serali’s chest sank.

Stupid.

Stupid, to have expected anything else.

“Until you give me what I want,” Allandra continued. “You will receive nothing that has not already been given. Food twice a day. Water. No visitors. No lower guard questioning you. No sun.”

Serali’s face went blank.

Too late.

Allandra saw.

“No sun?” Serali said, aiming for bored.

“None.”

“I am Night Fae. I will manage.”

“I am sure you will.”

Allandra raised one hand.

The torches lining the corridor extinguished themselves, one by one, with a series of soft, deliberate snaps.

Serali stopped breathing.

The light died in stages.

First the far end of the corridor.

Then the middle.

Then the torch nearest the door.

The last glow vanished from the bars.

The cell became dark.

Not dim.

Dark.

For one moment, the old terror was too large to have shape.

Serali did not speak.

She would not.

The Queen’s voice came from beyond the bars, cool and even. “If there is anything you suddenly remember, now would be an excellent time.”

Serali’s hands shook.

She pressed them into fists.

Iron bit her wrists.

She said nothing.

The silence stretched.

Allandra waited.

Of course she waited. She had patience. Queens always did when someone else was the one hurting.

At last, footsteps moved away.

Serali stayed standing until she could no longer feel her legs beneath her.

Then she sank to the pallet.

The darkness in the cell was not absolute.

It was worse.

It was layered and shifting, deeper than night in the Lyehiran forests and more intimate than breath. Without the torches, the cell became a mouth. The walls vanished first. Then the door. Then her own hands, swallowed past the iron cuffs.

Serali held herself rigid, willing the panic to pass, counting out seconds in the old Xuiven way, by the pulse in her neck.

At three seconds, her heart went double-time.

At four, the air thickened, clotted with the stink of cold stone and her own sweat.

At five, she was not in Myrae anymore.

She was in the root cellar. In the windowless room behind Rania’s dressing chamber. In the storage closet where Vandra had shut the door and told her perhaps a daughter of night should learn to love what she was.

She was a mistake. An embarrassment. A little Night Fae bastard who hid candle stubs under rags and cried without sound because crying loud enough meant someone would learn the dark worked.

Now the dark pressed in as if to prove it still did.

Serali refused to call out.

Not at first.

She gritted her teeth and pressed her back to the wall, digging her heels into the straw and thinking of the forest, of snow, of any place where darkness had been gentle and not a punishment. The drip of water in the corridor became the only clock, each splash echoing loud enough to make her jaw ache.

Her control snapped.

She choked on the first word, then forced it out, raw and ugly.

“Please.”

Nothing answered.

Serali clamped her mouth shut so hard her teeth ached.

No.

No, no, no.

She had not survived Rania to beg Allandra Luina for a candle.

She had not crossed the border, killed men, lost her name, lost her ship, lost the last scrap of anything like freedom, only to break because the room was dark.

But her body did not care about pride.

It never had.

She tried again, louder, and this time it was not a request but a demand, a tantrum, a final admission of defeat.

“Leave a candle. Just one. I won’t—”

She could not finish it.

Her voice cracked, and the old terror flooded her like fever.

On the other side of the door, nothing moved.

She imagined the Queen already gone. Already writing her off as weak, as broken, as exactly the kind of mistake Serali had always known herself to be. The thought stung, but not enough to call her back to silence.

She curled on the pallet, knees to chin, hands clamped over her ears as if she could hold the sound of her own pulse inside her skull.

She rocked once.

Twice.

Then froze.

A footstep.

Deliberate and light.

Then the Queen’s voice, barely above a whisper.

“I thought Night Fae liked the dark.”

Serali did not answer.

There was a pause.

The kind that said everything.

Then, without warning, a golden orb appeared between the bars.

No torch. No match. Just the sudden, floating globe of Sun Fae magic, bright as a bee’s eye and perfectly steady.

It drifted into the center of the cell, then stopped at shoulder height, bathing the walls in a soft, unwavering glow. It did not flicker. It did not warm the air, but it killed the dark completely.

Serali blinked against the light.

Tears streaked down her face.

She did not wipe them away.

From the hall, the Queen watched.

No pity.

No triumph.

No apology.

Only that same cool appraisal that had measured Serali on the first day.

But something had changed in it.

Or perhaps Serali was only too tired to defend herself from wanting that to be true.

For a moment, the only sound was her own breathing, rough but slowing.

The Queen spoke once more, the words even softer than before.

“Sleep, Serali. The dark will keep.”

Then she turned and was gone, footsteps fading up the stone stair.

Serali lay awake for a long time, staring at the little sun that hovered above the dirt.

Her wrists burned, but the light steadied her.

She slept in the end, curled beneath a queen’s borrowed sun, and dreamed in gold and cold and a silence that was almost kind.
