The Queen's Mage

Allandra had not meant to think of the prisoner during council.

That, she decided, was the first problem.

The second problem was that deciding not to think of her had the same effect as pressing on a bruise. It made the shape of the thing clearer. More immediate. Impossible to ignore.

Lord Merrow was speaking at length about grain tariffs in the eastern valley, one hand lifted in the same delicate gesture he used whenever he wanted everyone to mistake greed for precision. Across the table, Yvander, Master of Granaries, had already grown still with the particular fury of a man who considered harvests sacred and noble speculation a form of treason. Marielle, sitting three seats down, had ink on her wrist and a look in her eye that said she had taken apart Merrow’s argument six minutes ago and was now waiting for permission to do so publicly.

Allandra should have been listening.

She was listening.

Mostly.

But a part of her mind remained beneath the palace, in a cell carved into cold stone, where a Night Fae woman with violet eyes and a mouth like a drawn knife had stared at Allandra through iron bars and said, Do Avalusians not believe in good deeds, or do they only object when Night Fae do them?

The line had been insolent.

Reckless.

Badly timed.

Worse, it had been funny.

Allandra did not appreciate funny prisoners. She did not appreciate prisoners who could barely stand and still managed to make mockery feel like a weapon. She did not appreciate the way Serali’s eyes sharpened whenever she caught Allandra almost reacting, as if the woman had made a private sport of discovering how many expressions a queen could bury before one escaped.

She did not appreciate thinking about the shape of Serali’s mouth while Lord Merrow attempted to explain why the harvest surplus should be “strategically liberated” from provincial storehouses.

“Majesty?”

Allandra looked up.

The council table had gone quiet.

Merrow’s hand was still suspended midair, fingers gathered around a point he had apparently expected to complete uninterrupted.

Allandra folded her hands on the table. “If the argument requires me to believe that moving grain away from farmers before winter will improve loyalty in the eastern valleys, then no.”

Merrow blinked.

Marielle, the Court Engineer, made a soft, delighted sound into her papers.

Yvander smiled for the first time all morning.

Allandra continued, because irritation was more useful when given direction. “The surplus remains where it is until the winter estimates are complete. Any noble house found purchasing grain above a fair rate will lose its transport privileges until spring. If there is no further creativity on the subject of starving my own people for profit, we can move on.”

Merrow’s mouth closed.

Good.

The meeting did move on. Roads. Harbor inspection. Repairs to the western sea wall. Three petitions from guilds whose grievances had reproduced in the night. A report from Harrek, Commander of Myrae’s Watch on the lower city watch, which he delivered without looking once at Allandra as if he knew perfectly well she would be annoyed if he noticed her noticing whether he noticed.

He finished with, “No disturbances in the lower market since the festival.”

Allandra’s fingers stilled.

There it was again.

The dungeon beneath the palace. The broken market stall. The girl from the bread basket, who had been found, frightened but unharmed, and who had confirmed the prisoner’s story with shaking hands and too many glances toward her mother.

Serali had intervened.

That much was now fact.

Everything else remained impossible.

A Night Fae mage with Xuiven eyes had crossed into Myrae alone, bought passage on a ship, exposed herself in the middle of a festival to protect a stranger, and then refused to give any answer that mattered.

It was either the worst cover story ever constructed or the most inconvenient truth Allandra had encountered in years.

Neither possibility pleased her.

“Majesty?” Daravan said.

Only then did she realize she had been silent too long.

“Double the watch in the market anyway,” she said. “Quietly.”

Harrek eyes narrowed by the smallest degree. “Of course.”

Hagen, lounging at the far end of the table despite not technically being required at this meeting, tilted his glass in her direction. “It is touching, sister, the way you can turn one street brawl into a military occupation.”

“It is touching,” Allandra replied, “the way you consider restraint a concept other people should practice.”

Marielle dropped her pen.

Yvander coughed.

Hagen’s smile showed teeth. “You wound me.”

“Rarely enough to be satisfying.”

That earned a ripple of laughter from the safer end of the table. Allandra let it pass. She should not have enjoyed it.

She should not have thought, Serali would have done better.

That was the third problem.

By the time the council dissolved, Allandra had signed eleven orders, rejected four petitions, approved two repairs, and thought of the prisoner by name eight times.

Serali.

A single name. No house. No father. No lineage she would admit to.

Just Serali.

Allandra returned to her private study and found Everly’s wooden horse abandoned on her desk, one leg snapped clean off and a note beside it in large, furious letters.

HE FELL IN BATTLE.

Allandra read it twice.

Then, beneath that:

PLEASE FIX HIM.

The word please had been added in a different ink, undoubtedly after Lessa had intervened.

Allandra stared at the broken horse and felt something in her chest ease. A problem with shape, at least. A problem she could solve. She rang for a servant, sent the toy to the palace carpenter, and then stood at the window until the servant’s footsteps faded.

Below, Myrae shone obscenely bright in the afternoon sun. White stone, green glass, gold-tiled roofs, the harbor spread beyond like hammered blue. Her city. Her inheritance. Her responsibility.

Beneath it, in the cold dark, a woman who flinched at darkness but not at threats sat under a sun-orb Allandra had made with her own hand.

Allandra told herself she was going below because the matter remained unresolved.

She told herself she needed to observe the prisoner’s condition.

She told herself Serali’s fear of the dark might be manipulation, and therefore the orb must be tested.

She told herself many things.

None of them improved her mood.

The under-palace received her in its usual silence. The guards at the lower stair straightened. One reached for the torch.

“No,” Allandra said.

He stopped immediately.

She descended without it.

The dungeon’s cold gathered around her ankles, then her knees, then the base of her throat. She let it. Cold clarified. Darkness simplified. Down here, there were no courtiers, no petitions, no brother watching for weakness with a smile sharp enough to cut thread.

Only stone.

Iron.

The prisoner.

The orb brightened before Allandra turned the final corner.

That irritated her too.

Her own magic should not be so eager.

Serali sat on the pallet with her back against the wall, knees drawn up, manacled wrists resting loosely across them. She did not look surprised to see Allandra. In fact, she looked prepared, which meant she had been listening for the steps.

That should not have pleased Allandra.

It did not.

The orb hovered between them, a small, steady gold.

“Your Majesty,” Serali said.

Allandra stopped before the bars. “That almost sounded respectful.”

“I am experimenting with new tactics.”

“Are any of them honesty?”

“Not today, but I admire your optimism.”

There. The faint lift at the corner of Serali’s mouth. The exhausted brightness in her eyes, dulled by poor sleep but not extinguished. The bruising along her jaw had yellowed. The cuts at her wrists were worse.

Allandra’s gaze lingered there too long.

Serali noticed.

Of course she noticed.

“Are you here to ask the same questions again?” Serali asked. “I can save us both time and give the same answers in a slightly more insulting order.”

“No.”

That startled her.

Only a little, but enough.

Allandra filed the reaction away with the rest of the growing collection she absolutely did not have: Serali went still when surprised, not wide-eyed. Her mouth softened before her eyes did. She hid fear quickly, but confusion badly.

“All right,” Serali said slowly. “Then have you come to offer me a dramatic execution? Because I would like a bath first. It seems rude to die this sticky.”

“No execution.”

“A disappointing day for everyone.”

Allandra crossed her arms. “Do you have anything new to say?”

Serali blinked.

“Any new lie you want to try,” Allandra clarified. “Any improved version of the old ones. A name. A confession. A better explanation for why every fact around you points to a Lyehiran noble house you refuse to claim.”

Serali looked at her for a long moment.

Then she tipped her head against the stone. “Does your palace have a library, or do you only come to the dungeons to hear sad stories?”

Allandra should not have smiled.

She did not, quite.

But Serali’s eyes sharpened anyway, catching the almost-expression like a hand closing around a coin.

“Ah,” Serali said. “So there is a library.”

“There are several.”

“And yet here you are.”

“A flaw in my judgment.”

“Many queens have worse.”

Allandra studied her.

Serali looked worse than she had the day before. Not broken. Not even close. But worn thin. The manacles had carved raw half-moons into her wrists. The cell had leached color from her skin. Her hair hung in dark tangles around her face, and still she sat there as if the bars were an inconvenience she meant to critique later.

Allandra had known decorated generals with less composure.

She had also known assassins with better stories.

“I found the girl from the market,” Allandra said.

Serali’s posture changed.

Not dramatically. Nothing as useful as hope. Only a slight tightening through the shoulders, a quickness in the eyes.

“She is alive,” Allandra said.

Serali looked away.

It was the wrong reaction for a spy. Too private. Too immediate. Too relieved.

Allandra disliked what that did to her.

“She confirmed part of your account,” Allandra continued. “The man had hold of her. She asked for help. No one moved until you did.”

Serali’s throat worked once.

“Good,” she said.

Not I told you.

Not then let me go.

Just good.

Allandra’s suspicion did not vanish. It merely shifted shape.

“You should have waited for the watch.”

Serali laughed once, without humor. “Yes. They were very helpful when they arrived.”

“You assaulted them.”

“They put me face-first into a street.”

“You used magic in a crowd.”

“I used magic on a man twice my size who was trying to grab me after grabbing someone else.” Serali’s eyes flashed. “If this is the part where you explain the proper etiquette of being handled against one’s will, I assure you, I have had excellent tutors.”

Allandra went still.

The words hung between them.

Too sharp.

Too revealing.

Serali seemed to realize it at the same time. Her face closed, all expression shuttering into blankness.

Allandra could have pressed.

A week ago, she would have.

Perhaps even yesterday.

Instead, she said, “Your tongue is going to get you killed.”

Serali’s mouth twisted. “It has been trying for years.”

Again, that unwanted flicker of amusement.

Again, Serali saw it.

The prisoner smiled, faintly triumphant, and Allandra hated how badly she wanted to know what that smile would look like without blood and exhaustion hollowing it out.

Enough.

Allandra let the thought freeze.

“You are still not safe,” she said.

“I had gathered.”

“The girl’s testimony proves one thing. It does not explain your magic, your blood, the men dead at the border, or the person powerful enough to hunt you.”

“No,” Serali said quietly. “It does not.”

“Then give me the rest.”

“No.”

Simple.

Flat.

Final.

Allandra’s fingers curled at her sides.

“You would rather sit here.”

“I would rather be on a ship.”

“That is not an option.”

“Then yes. I would rather sit here.”

“Why?”

Serali looked at her.

For a moment, the sarcasm fell away, and what remained was more dangerous. A tired woman in chains. A secret with a pulse.

“Because some truths are worse than dungeons.”

Allandra felt the answer land beneath her ribs.

She should have dismissed it. Manipulation. Deflection. Another dramatic half-confession shaped to draw mercy without payment.

Instead, she believed it.

Not all of it.

Enough.

The orb drifted slightly, brightening between them.

Serali’s eyes flicked to it.

There it was: the fear hidden behind the attention. The awareness of light as if it were water in a desert.

Allandra looked at the orb too.

She had left it because leaving Serali in darkness had been cruel in a way that tasted too much like memory. Not her memory. Serali’s. The kind of fear that did not belong to a single night but to years, layered until the body mistook absence of light for command.

Allandra had told herself the orb was temporary.

A concession.

A tool.

Tools, when kept too long, became habits.

Habits became weaknesses.

Serali watched her watching it.

“Are you taking away my sun, Majesty?”

The question was light.

Too light.

Allandra heard the strain beneath it.

“If I do?”

Serali’s smile was a thin, vicious thing. “Then I suppose I learn whether your mercy has a schedule.”

“That is not what it is.”

“No?”

“No.”

“What is it, then?”

Allandra did not answer.

Because she did not know.

That was intolerable.

She lifted one hand. The orb trembled in the air, its gold surface tightening until it became small and bright and sharp.

Serali went very still.

Allandra closed her fingers.

The orb vanished.

Darkness swallowed the cell at once.

Not complete darkness; there were torches down the corridor, faint and blue-edged, enough for Allandra’s Sun Fae eyes to find the bars, the wall, the outline of Serali on the pallet.

But Serali made a sound.

Small.

Instantly bitten back.

Allandra heard it anyway.

The prisoner’s breath hitched once, then again, faster. Chains scraped stone. She did not beg. She did not speak. Her silence was worse than pleading would have been.

Allandra stood there for three heartbeats longer than mercy allowed.

Then four.

Then five.

“Perhaps you will have something new to say tomorrow,” she said.

It sounded cold.

It sounded like a queen.

It sounded like someone else.

She turned and walked away.

The first corridor felt longer than usual. The second colder. By the time she reached the lower stair, Serali’s silence had followed her like a hand around the throat.

Daravan waited at the top of the stair, as he always did when pretending not to supervise.

“All well?” he asked.

“Yes.”

It was a lie, and he knew it.

He said nothing.

Allandra returned to her study. There were documents on her desk. Three trade reports. A letter from the western coast. A note from Lessa explaining that Everly had refused to nap because “sleep is for people with no plans.” The wooden horse had been repaired, the broken leg carefully replaced and polished smooth.

Allandra read the first line of the trade report four times.

The words did not become meaning.

Instead, she heard the tiny sound Serali had failed to bury. Saw violet eyes fixed on the orb. Heard the brittle question.

Are you taking away my sun, Majesty?

Allandra set the report down.

For several minutes, she did not move.

Then she swore softly, rose, and left the study without calling for guards.

The under-palace seemed to know her now. Or perhaps she only knew herself too well by then to pretend she was going for any reason besides guilt.

The corridor outside Serali’s cell was silent.

Too silent.

Allandra stopped before the bars.

Serali was curled on the pallet, knees drawn tightly to her chest, manacled hands tucked beneath her chin. She did not lift her head. Her breathing had steadied, but not into sleep. Into endurance.

Allandra raised her hand.

Gold gathered in her palm.

The orb formed slowly this time, softer than before. It slipped between the bars and drifted to the center of the cell, settling near the floor where its light reached Serali without touching her.

Serali did not move.

Did not speak.

Did not thank her.

Allandra had not expected gratitude.

She found, disturbingly, that she was relieved not to receive it.

“I will not ask you anything tonight,” Allandra said.

Serali’s eyes opened.

Only that.

A thin shine of violet in the borrowed light.

Allandra waited, though she did not know for what.

A barb, perhaps. A curse. Some shattered little joke sharp enough to make the room feel less like confession.

Serali said nothing.

The silence between them was not forgiveness.

It was not trust.

It was only a light left burning in a cold room, and two women who both understood that something had changed because of it.

Allandra turned away first.

Behind her, the orb held steady.
