The Queen's Mage

The palace’s lower halls kept their own kind of dark. Not the gentle, velvet dark of the woods or the thin, blue-black dark of a city street at midnight, but the close dark of something built to be a prison even for those who ran it.

Serali followed Cillian down the spiral of ancient limestone, the heels of her boots wrapped in rags to muffle their sound. The little candle had gone out halfway through the descent, smothered by a draft that smelled of centuries-old grease and the sickly, ammoniac tang of rat droppings.

They moved by touch: Cillian’s hand on her wrist, Serali’s free palm skimming the clammy wall, searching for the hairline crack where one stone met the next. She could have found her way blind. In a sense, she always had.

The servants’ passage behind the east scullery was little more than a slot in the wall, a space just wide enough for them to squeeze through in single file. The air was a slab of cold, heavy as a tomb, and her breath condensed instantly, sticking her hair to her cheeks in wet strands. The memory of a hundred mornings cleaning this corridor returned to her all at once; the bucket’s chill, the lye burns, the sound of Vandra’s voice behind her, always watching. She dug her nails into her palm and pressed forward.

The only sound was Cillian’s breathing, tight and urgent, and the distant, arrhythmic clatter of something metallic in the kitchens. They stopped at the first junction, where a cross-tunnel met the main passage at a strange, off-kilter angle. Two men slumped against the far wall, guards by the look of their boots, heads lolling on their chests. The nearer man snored, a soft, phlegmy buzz, while the other simply drooled onto his collar. Even so, Serali’s lungs locked, and it took every shred of will to hold still as the seconds slithered past. The Queen’s hounds were less dangerous asleep than awake, but only just.

Cillian squeezed her wrist once, then let go. He made a slashing gesture that meant “wait,” and slid ahead, picking his way over the uneven flagstones. Serali shrank into the wall, making herself small, until she could barely feel her own heartbeat. Cillian’s foot caught on a loose stone; the guard’s snore cut out, replaced by a wet, choking gasp. Serali willed herself invisible. The silence stretched, then slowly, miraculously, the man’s head drooped again, and the snoring resumed.

Cillian looked back, eyes wide with something close to fear, then motioned her forward. Together, they crept past, neither daring a breath until the corridor turned sharply left, the sound of the guards fading into the dark like a bad dream.

They descended another set of stairs, the stone growing slick with condensation. Here, Cillian stopped her with a gentle tug. “There’s a tripwire,” he breathed, barely audible. “Half a pace ahead.”

Serali nodded. She crouched, squinting into the pitch. The wire was nearly invisible, but she found it and stepped over it carefully.

At the bottom of the stairs, a thick iron door blocked the way. There was no handle, only a keyhole blackened with age.

Cillian drew a key from his tunic, a simple thing, but with a head stamped in the shape of a four-pointed star. He met her eyes and said, “Khalen’s. He owes me.”

Serali gave him a look that said, You’ll tell me later, and he slid the key in, turning it with slow, deliberate force. The lock gave a protesting creak, but the door swung inward, opening onto the palace’s outer courtyard.

The night struck her like a slap. Cold, sharp, with a tang of frost that bit down into her lungs and made her eyes water. Above, the stars were smeared behind a curtain of fast-moving cloud, and the air pulsed with the distant howl of one of the palace wolves, the ones that ran the perimeter, bred for nothing but speed and blood.

She pulled her cloak tight, instinctively ducking her head. Cillian’s grip was back on her wrist, firmer now, as he yanked her into the shadow of a colonnade.

The courtyard was a vast rectangle, paved in stone shot through with veins of black ice. On the far side, the stables hunched under a sagging red-tile roof, windows shuttered against the wind. Between them and the stables, nothing but open ground, at least fifty paces, cut by the flickering pools of shadow-silk torches mounted high on the palace wall. The torches burned with the strange, spectral flame the Xuiven had perfected: a flame that lit the air with sharp contrasts but left the corners of the world untouched, so that anyone moving between shadows risked being exposed by a sudden, cruel glare.

Cillian crouched, calculating. “We take it slow, keep to the wall, and run when I say.”

Serali nodded, eyes already mapping the route: first to the dried-up fountain, then along the low garden wall, then a straight sprint to the stable door.

They moved. The wind cut through her, but she ignored it, counting off her steps in silence. At the fountain, they ducked as a patrol passed along the upper balcony, a pair of guards, backs to the yard, the gleam of halberds catching in the torchlight. Serali breathed out, once, then followed as Cillian led her along the garden wall, bodies pressed close to the mossy stone.

She lost track of time, counting only the pattern of shadow and light, the rhythm of their own footsteps. At the last stretch, Cillian paused, sucking a breath through his teeth.

The stable door gave a long, low creak. They ducked inside, the stink of manure and hay a blessed relief after the palace. Cillian eased the door shut, then let out a shaky breath that fogged the air between them.

For the first time since she’d woken, Serali allowed herself to look at him: really look. His face was drawn, every muscle tense, his breath uneven. But his hands were steady, and his eyes were alive with something she recognized, fear, yes, but also the wild relief of someone who’d survived the impossible.

“You okay?” she whispered.

He nodded, once, then pointed deeper into the dark. “He’s waiting,” he said, voice full of meaning. Serali followed his gaze. Somewhere in the back of the stable, a shadow moved, a shape large enough to be a man, sitting on a crate.

Serali squared her shoulders and stepped forward, the satchel bouncing at her hip.

Khalen waited in the furthest stall, his broad shoulders bent over the saddle of a gray-brown horse with a blunt, battered face. Two more horses stood tethered behind him: one spare, lean as a winter wolf, and the other weighted down with bedrolls and a canvas sack slumped across its haunch.

The stable was colder here, the straw sodden with old urine, but Khalen seemed not to notice. He wore no livery, only a travel-stained coat and trousers, his boots scuffed to the hide. His sword hung from the pommel, unadorned and wrapped in oiled leather, a tool rather than a trophy.

He looked up as they entered.

His eyes went first to Cillian.

Then to Serali.

Then to the corridor behind them.

Only after that did he speak.

“You were not followed?”

Cillian stopped in the shadow of the door, refusing to step farther inside. “No.”

Khalen’s gaze stayed on him a second longer than agreement required.

Then he looked back to Serali.

For a long moment, he said nothing. His face was difficult to read: broad, still, built more for weather than expression. Then he nudged one saddlebag open and reached inside.

“You remember Serali,” Cillian said, not quite a question.

“I remember,” Khalen said.

His tone was flat, but not unkind.

He handed Serali the first bundle: a cloak, heavier than hers, lined with matted wool. Then a purse — weightier than Cillian’s, and when she shifted it in her palm, the sound inside was solid silver, not the thin tinkle of small coin. Then came a knife in a leather sheath, and finally a glass vial stoppered with black wax.

He laid the items in a neat row on the low ledge between them.

Not gifts.

Supplies.

That made them easier to accept.

Serali looked at the knife.

Then at him.

Khalen said, “Boot or sleeve. Not belt. Too easy to see.”

She blinked.

Cillian’s jaw tightened.

Khalen’s eyes moved to him, and this time the look was unmistakable: reproach, acknowledgment, and something harder beneath both.

“Tell her,” Khalen said.

Cillian’s mouth thinned. “She knows what’s at stake.”

“No,” Khalen said. “She knows what he wants. That is not the same thing.”

Serali’s hand closed around the cloak.

Cillian looked away first.

Khalen did not soften.

“If they catch you,” he said to Serali, “they do not take you back to the kitchens. They do not put you in a closet. They do not let Rania decide how much pain is enough. The King claims you before anyone can object, and then no door in this palace opens for you again.”

The stable seemed to shrink around the words.

Serali’s throat tightened.

“I know.”

Khalen studied her.

Then nodded once.

“Good.”

Not cruel.

Not satisfied.

Only certain that she understood the shape of the blade.

“We leave in three minutes.”

He turned back to the horses, running his palm down each flank, inspecting hooves and tack with the professional detachment of a man who knew fear was useless unless it became preparation. Serali tucked the purse into her satchel, the knife into her boot, then held up the vial, turning it against the lantern light.

The fluid inside was a thick, sluggish gold, viscous as honey.

She raised an eyebrow. “Poison? Or something more original?”

Khalen glanced over. “Not poison.”

A pause.

“Unless someone else drinks it.”

Serali looked at the vial again.

Cillian spoke, his voice pitched for her alone. “It’s a glamour. From the Sun Fae side. You drink it, your hair and eyes change, skin goes a few shades darker. You’ll look enough like a dock rat to get lost in Myrae. Maybe even pass for one of them.”

Serali eyed the vial with new suspicion. “How long does it last?”

“Three weeks,” Khalen said. “A month if you don’t use your gift. But if you channel, even a little, it burns off in under a minute.”

She smirked, but it was all teeth. “So don’t draw attention. Don’t get mad. Don’t use the thing I’m good at.”

Khalen finished tightening a strap before answering.

“Yes.”

The simplicity of it made her angrier than comfort would have.

She stared at him.

He met her eyes evenly.

“I am not telling you what is fair,” he said. “I am telling you what works.”

Serali’s grip tightened around the vial.

“And if I can’t do that?”

“Then make sure it matters.”

For some reason, that answer steadied her more than any reassurance could have.

Cillian looked at Khalen sharply.

Khalen ignored him and checked the second saddle. Then he handed Serali the reins to the wolfish mare.

“She bites,” he said.

Serali stroked the mare’s nose, feeling the heat of its breath, the coarse prickle of hair under her hand. The horse blinked, indifferent as any palace servant.

“So do I.”

“I assumed.”

Khalen mounted with the easy economy of a man who had done it in armor and in rags, in snow and in battle. He pointed to the outer gate, a slat of black barely visible through the stable’s gloom.

“Ride hard. No main road. No speaking unless I ask you a question. If I say down, you get down. If I say run, you do not look for me first.”

Serali lifted her chin. “I know how to run.”

Khalen looked at her.

Something passed through his expression then , not pity, not quite.

“I know.”

That was worse, somehow.

Serali looked away first.

Her eyes went to Cillian.

He stood stiff in the threshold, hands balled at his sides, his face locked down to a single line of regret. He looked younger than he had in years. Or perhaps only more like what he was: a prince about to close a door behind the only person in the palace who knew how many nights he had spent trying not to become his father.

She crossed the distance to him, close enough that the straw brushed her boots, close enough to catch the ghost of whatever soap the palace used on its proper-born sons. He looked at her, not quite seeing her.

“You could come with us,” she said, too soft for Khalen to hear.

Cillian shook his head once. “Someone has to close the doors behind you.”

There was nothing left to say.

Still, Cillian reached out, awkward, and cupped her head, pressing his forehead to hers. The touch was fierce and desperate and then gone in a blink.

“Go,” he said.

She pulled back, searching his face.

He managed a smile, crooked, unconvincing, but a smile all the same.

“Take care of him,” she said, jerking her chin at Khalen.

Cillian huffed a breath that was almost a laugh. “He would object to the implication that anyone can.”

From the saddle, Khalen said, “Correct.”

Serali glanced over her shoulder.

Khalen was watching the gate, not them.

But his hand rested on the reins of her horse as well as his own, ready.

Always ready.

Cillian’s gaze flicked to him. “Take care of her.”

Khalen did look back then.

Only briefly.

“That was the plan.”

The words were blunt enough to sound almost indifferent.

They were not.

Serali turned, swung into the saddle, and let Khalen lead her out the back gate, the snow-muffled world swallowing them whole.

The first part of the ride was fast and reckless only because speed was necessary. Khalen made no wasted movements, gave no speeches, and did not look back to check whether she followed. He trusted the horse, or he trusted her, or he had decided there was no time for either.

Hooves thudded over frozen earth. Breath frosted in the bitter night. The city lights vanished behind a tangle of trees, and the sky bled slowly from black to the iron gray of false dawn.

They took no main road, only snaking tracks Khalen knew: sometimes doubling back, sometimes plunging through gullies and over abandoned fields, sometimes cutting through stands of black pine so narrow the branches scraped Serali’s cloak and left snow melting cold against her neck.

At a fork near the river, Khalen slowed to a walk, letting the horses blow.

For several minutes, he said nothing.

Then he looked at Serali.

Really looked.

In the half-light, she could see the lines that fear and long service had carved deep into his face. He was not old, perhaps, but he had the look of someone who had spent years becoming harder because softness had no practical use.

“If you make it to Myrae,” he said, “do not look back.”

Serali stared ahead.

The city was still days away, a smear of possibility over the horizon, but she could feel it already: how it might taste, how the air might change, how nothing would ever be the same.

“If?” she asked.

Khalen’s eyes returned to the road.

“When,” he corrected.

A small change.

A deliberate one.

Serali nodded once, the gesture too small for words.

Behind her, the palace was only a memory now, a stain of torchlight on the edge of the world.

She did not look back.
