The Queen's Mage

In the council chamber, cold sunlight burned through stained-glass arches and shattered across the stone floor, casting a prismatic geometry that did nothing to warm the room.

The effect was calculated: the chill, the absence of tapestries, the echo. The chamber had been designed by some long-dead Luinan king who believed discomfort made liars careless and loyalists brief. Allandra had always appreciated the theory. Today, she appreciated nothing.

She sat at the end of the long table, where the sun laid a pale crown on her hair and the shadow of the city stretched behind her. Even here, above the under-palace, above the cells and corridors and iron doors, the air felt thin.

The councilors took their places with the habitual discomfort of people summoned too often and seldom for good news.

Yvander, Master of Granaries, arrived first, his beard cultivated to sweep crumbs from the lapels of lesser men. He sat heavily, shoulders armored in thick blue-green velvet, and began rehearsing the day’s tally before the chairs had stopped scraping.

“Barley stores are down twelve percent from forecast,” he said. “With the port disruptions, we’ll need to begin rationing before the equinox. If you want the city to keep its bread, Majesty, you’ll have to cut the garrison’s grain.”

Harrek, Commander of Myrae’s Watch, followed with a sheaf of receipts clutched under one arm. His fingers were ink-stained, his collar slightly crooked, and his expression fixed in the strained smile he wore whenever he had bad news and hoped charm might make it smaller.

It never did.

“We’ve shifted to winter maintenance,” he said, eyes darting once to Yvander before returning to Allandra. “Oxen are already dropping weight. At least a dozen carts are beyond repair, and half the foragers have taken ill. We’ll have to hire from the market crews if we want the supply line to stay open past the first heavy storm.”

Lady Verya, High Jurist of Avalusian Law, entered next with none of Marielle’s theatricality and all of the confidence of someone accustomed to winning arguments by waiting for others to finish speaking. Her dark robes were severe even by court standards, trimmed only with silver embroidery marking her office. A stack of bound legal codices rested beneath one arm.

She inclined her head to Allandra.

“Majesty.”

“Lady Verya.”

Verya took her seat and immediately opened one of the books. “Before anyone asks, no, the emergency grain statutes do not permit seizure of private stores without compensation. We tried that three reigns ago. It ended in riots and two assassinations.”

Yvander sighed. “You always take the joy out of governance.”

“I consider that my duty.”

The chamber doors opened again.

Hagen sauntered in late.

Not hurried. Not apologetic. Late in the deliberate manner of a man who believed punctuality was a concession granted to other people.

His dark coat hung open despite the cold, and he carried a silver goblet that definitely did not contain anything appropriate for a morning council session.

“Good,” Hagen said, dropping into his chair. “You haven’t finished without me.”

“No one was considering it,” Verya said dryly.

“Cruel.”

“You’re twenty minutes late.”

“Then I arrived exactly when I intended.”

Allandra pinched the bridge of her nose.

Hagen noticed and grinned.

“Majesty.”

“Hagen.”

“Still angry with me?”

“Yes.”

“Excellent. I’d hate to lose consistency in government.”

Lady Marielle, Court Engineer, arrived last and made her entrance as a declaration of war: slamming down a scroll case, snapping the brass latches with surgical impatience. She wore men’s gloves, the fingertips stained with lampblack, and her pale hair was cropped blunt beneath one ear and pinned back on the other side with a pencil.

“Your north wall is holding,” she said, without greeting anyone, “but another freeze like last year’s and you’ll have more than cracks to mend. The city’s oil reserves won’t last the season unless you want to burn books.”

Yvander made a pained sound. “No one is burning books.”

Marielle glanced at him. “Not with that attitude.”

Allandra raised one finger.

Silence fell at once.

Even Hagen had the decency to stop smiling.

It was not obedience, exactly. It was the common understanding that her patience was more dangerous than her temper.

“Lady Marielle,” Allandra said, “list the repairs that will not wait until spring.”

Marielle unrolled a diagram across the table. “Aqueduct first. North watch second. The western sea wall can limp along another month if no one foolishly asks it to withstand weather. If you want the streets kept clear, I’ll need a hundred men for three weeks and two hundred barrels of lamp oil. The rest is triage.”

Harrek snorted. “You cannot have the men. The city watch is stretched thin already.”

“And if the bakeries go dry,” Yvander said, “you’ll have riots, not watchmen.”

Verya turned a page without looking up. “Legally speaking, riots are considerably more expensive.”

“Depends who wins,” Hagen offered.

Verya ignored him.

Marielle looked to Allandra. “If the Queen says ‘a hundred men,’ I will have them.”

Allandra listened, the drumbeat of bureaucracy steady in her ears, and weighed each crisis against the others. Grain. Roads. Oil. Watch rotations. Weather. Public confidence. Every problem had a practical body and a political shadow; every councilor brought a truth to sell and a personal score stitched to its hem.

She should have found the rhythm comforting.

Instead, her mind flickered downward.

To the cell beneath the east stairs.

To the purpled mark she had left on Serali’s cheek.

To the memory of her own palm striking skin.

The slap had been precise. Controlled. Not rage. Not loss of command.

That was the excuse.

The truth was worse. The truth was that Serali had found the one place Allandra’s patience was thinnest and pressed there, smiling through split lips and exhaustion as if she had been born to make queens regret themselves.

Allandra’s hand still remembered the shape of her face.

She flexed her fingers once beneath the table.

No one noticed.

Daravan would have.

Daravan was not yet in the room, which was perhaps why Allandra allowed herself the movement at all.

Harrek was still speaking. “If we pull men from the lower districts, we’ll leave gaps near the market. After the festival incident—”

Allandra’s gaze lifted.

Harrek stopped so quickly his teeth clicked.

“The festival incident,” she said.

His smile returned, weaker. “The prisoner, Majesty. I only meant—”

“I know what you meant.”

The room chilled by several degrees.

Hagen’s expression sobered slightly.

For once, he did not make a joke.

Allandra turned to Marielle. “Aqueduct and north watch take priority. Fifty men, not a hundred. Half the oil. You’ll make it work.”

Marielle’s mouth opened.

Allandra looked at her.

Marielle closed it again, then smiled faintly. “Majesty.”

“Harrek, you’ll hire replacements from the market crews and outlying districts. Pay double the usual rate if you have to. I would rather spend coin than soldiers.”

Harrek nodded, already scribbling.

“Yvander, begin rationing, but not to the garrison. Let the city eat less bread and more pickled root until we reopen the southern shipments. If the port stabilizes, bring in salt-cured meat from the woodland districts.”

Yvander’s beard trembled with the force of several objections dying unborn.

“Lady Verya,” Allandra said.

The jurist looked up from her book.

“Review the emergency authorities available to the Crown if the shortages worsen. I want options before I need them.”

Verya nodded once. “I’ll prepare a memorandum by evening. Preferably one that avoids riots and assassinations.”

“An admirable goal.”

“Seldom appreciated.”

At the eastern side of the chamber, a figure in white robes waited near the archway rather than the council table itself.

Solen of the Mage College was not a councilor and never pretended to be one. He had only been invited to attend because winter in Myrae inevitably became a magical problem before it became anything else.

“Solen?” Allandra said.

He bowed. His white robes trailed faint frost that hissed where it touched the warmer stone.

“Majesty.”

“Keep the snow clear from the outer gates and watch roads, but let the lower city see your apprentices doing it. I will not have rumors spreading that the palace hoards warmth while the streets ice over.”

Solen pressed his lips together. “Of course.”

“Harrek, keep the inner ring secure. Quietly. The city’s peace is unnatural, and I trust it less than unrest.”

“Majesty.”

Yvander made the mistake of drawing breath too loudly.

Allandra turned to him. “If you are about to say ‘if I may,’ you may not.”

His mouth shut.

Good.

The councilors traded glances: some smug, some nervous, Marielle openly delighted by the clarity of having won only half of what she wanted and therefore having something to complain about for the rest of the week. Verya merely made a note in the margin of her book, as though recording evidence for a future legal dispute.

Hagen raised his goblet.

“To winter. The season dedicated to proving every previous decision was wrong.”

No one acknowledged him.

“Hostile room,” he muttered.

Allandra stood, pushing her chair back with the kind of grace that concealed violence.

“There will be no famine this winter,” she said. “No unrest if it can be prevented, no panic if it cannot. Every quarter will know who to thank and who to blame. Meeting adjourned.”

Harrek and Yvander left first, their conflict resuming in mutters before they passed the door. Solen departed as well, frost whispering across the stone as he returned to the Mage College’s winter preparations. Verya gathered her books with methodical precision and departed without wasting a motion.

Marielle lingered, rolling her diagram tight and slipping it beneath her arm.

“You’re making enemies,” she said, almost fondly.

Allandra considered, then shrugged. “I have more enemies than walls, Marielle. The city can only hold so many.”

Marielle’s grin sharpened. “Just be sure the ones inside don’t outnumber the ones out.”

When Marielle had gone, Hagen remained in his chair.

“Should I be worried?” he asked quietly.

Allandra glanced at him.

“About what?”

“The prisoner.”

For a moment neither spoke.

Then Allandra looked away.

“Yes.”

The answer wiped the last trace of amusement from Hagen’s face.

When he finally left, Allandra was briefly grateful that Lord Merrow was absent on his tour of the western province. Had he been present, he would have lingered after the meeting under the guise of concern, probing for weakness with that courteous smile of his and filing away every hesitation for future use. Today she lacked the patience to fend him off.

She walked to the window.

From this angle, Myrae was a shallow bowl steeped in blue shadow and sunlight, smoke threading up from chimneys like question marks. The city was too bright after the dungeon. Too loud even through glass. Too alive.

She stood there a long moment, waiting for her heart to slow, fingers unconsciously tracing the faint scar along her wrist.

The memory of Serali’s face lingered.

Not the bruising.

The look in her eyes just before Allandra struck her.

Calm, almost. Not because she had expected kindness, but because she had expected violence and found it familiar. There had been no surprise in her. No betrayal. Only the old, grim confirmation of a lesson learned long before Allandra entered her life.

That was what had followed Allandra through the night.

Not guilt alone.

Recognition.

Serali had looked at her as if Allandra were merely another room in the same prison.

The thought made something hard and sour settle beneath her ribs.

She almost wished she could ask the woman how she had survived it.

That was absurd.

Dangerous.

Worse, useless.

The council bell tolled.

Once.

Allandra frowned.

It was too early for the hour mark.

A second bell followed, higher and sharper, from the inner ring.

Then a third.

Not timekeeping.

Alarm.

The room changed at once. The stained-glass light snapped into new contrast, gold turning brittle and white across the stone. Outside, somewhere down the corridor, boots struck marble at a run.

Allandra was already moving when the door crashed open.

Daravan entered without waiting for announcement, cloak not yet straightened from his run, one hand braced on the doorframe. He was not breathless. Not quite. But his eyes had gone flat and bright in a way Allandra knew too well.

“Majesty.”

The single word pulled every thread of warmth from the chamber.

Allandra stood very still.

“What?”

“The prisoner has escaped.”

For half a heartbeat, there was nothing.

No anger.

No fear.

Only a cold, perfect clarity.

Serali had escaped.

Of course she had.

Allandra saw it in a rush: the raw wrists, the measuring eyes, the way Serali had watched doors and hinges and guards’ hands; the way she had turned every kindness, every cruelty, every routine into information. Serali had not been waiting to break. She had been waiting for an opening.

Then the second thought struck.

Everly.

Not as a word.

As a blade.

Her daughter somewhere in the upper rooms, probably reading, probably refusing a nap, probably arguing with Lessa over whether a repaired warhorse required a victory parade. Everly, who had never learned to fear locked doors because Allandra had spent the past two years making sure she would not have to.

Everly, who knew nothing of Night Fae prisoners except the stories whispered by adults who thought children heard only when spoken to.

Allandra turned, decision already made.

“Lock down the inner ring,” she said. “No one leaves the palace. No one enters. Find my daughter and bring her to me now.”

Daravan spun on his heel, voice already barking commands before he crossed the threshold.

“All gates sealed! Inner ring to alert! Find Princess Everly!”

The words chased him down the corridor, multiplying as guards took them up. Doors slammed. Boots thundered. The palace, so practiced in ceremony, became all motion and steel.

Allandra did not wait.

She moved through the corridor at a run.

It was not queenly.

She did not care.

A maid flattened herself against the wall as Allandra passed. Two guards at the western arch startled, then snapped into pursuit. Someone called her title behind her. Someone else asked for orders. She ignored them all.

The bells kept ringing.

Their sound moved through the palace in waves, deeper than drums, sharper than trumpets. The glass panels above trembled with each strike. Colored light slipped and fractured over the marble floor, over Allandra’s skirts, over the gold at her throat where the Mantle stirred awake beneath her skin.

She did not care about the city.

Not then.

Not the grain stores, or the north wall, or the garrison, or the lords who would feast on any sign of weakness she offered them.

She cared only about Everly.

Everly, who asked if “queen yes” counted when Uncle Hagen said it.

Everly, who bit Lord Merrow’s nephew because he stepped on purpose.

Everly, who had written PLEASE FIX HIM beneath a dead wooden horse because Lessa had taught her that commands worked better when disguised as manners.

Allandra reached the upper gallery and took the stairs two at a time.

A guard appeared at the landing, face pale. “Majesty, the princess was last seen in the east playroom.”

The world narrowed.

East playroom.

Windows too high for a safe jump. One main door. One servant’s passage, usually locked. Soft rugs. Heavy toy chests. Too many small objects that could become weapons in desperate hands.

Allandra’s magic rose before she called it.

Heat flooded her palms. Light gathered at her shoulders, wing-shapes threatening beneath her skin. The Mantle did not ask whether she wanted war. It knew the shape of threat and answered with old, brutal joy.

She forced it down.

Not yet.

Not until she knew.

“Clear the hall,” she said.

The guard obeyed, shouting.

Allandra turned the corner.

At the far end of the corridor, Daravan stood before the playroom door with four guards behind him. His sword was drawn. His face, when he looked at her, told her everything and nothing.

The door was closed.
