The Queen's Mage

They arrived not with banners, but with soft boots and lanterns, slipping through the morning mist as if they belonged to it. The woodworker saw them first. For one impossible second, Serali remembered only his hand on her shoulder, hard enough to hurt, and the way his voice changed when he said her name.

Not frightened.

Final.

“Hide your sister.”

Kira was ten and still warm from sleep, hair tangled, eyes wide before she understood enough to be afraid. Serali shoved her into the pantry and pressed one finger to her own lips. “Don’t come out. Don’t make a sound. Don’t be brave.”

She did not know if Kira understood.

There was no time to make sure.

The door had barely closed before the soldiers reached the house.

There was shouting. A crash of timber. Her father’s voice, furious enough to make the walls seem smaller. Her mother’s voice after that, sharp and terrified, saying Serali’s name once before someone struck wood or bone or both.

Then, hands were on Serali.

Cold hands. Gloved hands. Hands in her hair, around her arms, dragging her backward when she kicked hard enough to make one soldier curse. She bit one of them deep enough to draw blood. He called her “rat” and spat in her face before wrenching her arm behind her back.

She looked once toward the pantry.

Only once.

Kira’s eyes watched through the narrow crack between door and frame, both hands clamped over her mouth.

That was the last thing Serali saw before they dragged her into the courtyard.

Her mother was there. Thelara stood held between two soldiers, her face pale but unbowed. The woodworker was on his knees near the broken threshold, blood at his mouth, still trying to rise.

Serali fought harder then.

It changed nothing.

A man in a long, smoke-blue cloak stood in the mist with a scroll already unrolled in his hands. He told Thelara her crime. Serali did not understand the words then, only the way her mother’s face went still around them, as if the accusation had been expected for years and still found a place to wound.

Thelara denied nothing.

The man asked Serali her name.

She gave it because she was thirteen, furious, and still believed names belonged to the people who carried them.

He only shook his head and made a mark on the scroll.

After that, everything happened with practiced finality.

The soldiers pulled Thelara away from her. Another dragged Serali toward the road. Her father shouted her name; not Thelara’s daughter, not bastard, not curse, but Serali, his girl, his child, and then someone struck him again.

Serali twisted, trying to see the pantry.

Trying to see Kira.

Trying to see anything she could carry with her that was not hands and mist and the smoke-blue cloak.

But the courtyard turned. The house vanished behind shoulders and lantern-glare. Her mother’s voice cut off. Her father’s did too.

They took Serali first.

That was the fact that lived inside her afterward.

First.

Not only, perhaps. Not last. She never knew.

She did not know whether the soldiers found Kira behind the pantry door five breaths later or never. She did not know whether her father survived the blow. She did not know where they took Thelara when the road split beyond the village. No one in Naerith would answer her. No one would even admit the questions had shape.

For one hundred and twenty-seven years, Serali had only that last glimpse: Kira’s eyes in the dark crack of the pantry door, her father bleeding and still calling her daughter, her mother held upright in the mist.

The man in the blue cloak brought her to the King, who regarded her with the same distant appraisal as if she were a rare horse, an odd piece of jewelry, or a tool whose purpose had not yet been discovered. Serali was not told her fate. She was told only that she would remain in the palace, that she was to answer to Serali and nothing else, and that any other name she had carried before belonged to a life the palace had already taken from her.

For the first few decades, she was kept in a small room tucked into one of the lesser palace corridors. It was not a cell. That was important to the people who spoke of such things. It had a bed, a washstand, a narrow window, and a door that locked from the outside. She was given gowns plain enough not to suggest rank but fine enough to remind her that everything on her body came from someone else’s permission.

Tutors came and went.

She was taught etiquette first: how to stand, how to lower her eyes, how to enter a room, how to accept correction without flinching, how to speak only when invited and never as if she expected an answer. She learned which fork belonged to which course, which forms of address could save her from punishment, and how many ways the court had invented to make obedience look graceful.

Then came reading and writing.

Naeric first. Then Solvari, though she had never met a Sun Fae in her life. Old prayers, court forms, genealogies, diplomatic phrases, household ledgers, royal histories edited so cleanly they bled nothing at all. Serali learned quickly. Too quickly, perhaps. At that age, she still had not learned to make intelligence look harmless.

Her father, no, the King, she corrected herself even then, because father was a word that belonged to a different man bleeding in a courtyard, occasionally sent for reports. For a while, she understood that she was being measured. Tested. Considered. Vulmar wanted to know if she had inherited anything useful from Thelara besides inconvenient blood.

He never found a use for her.

Not one worth naming.

That, somehow, made Rania hate her more.

The Queen had hated her from the beginning, of course. Serali had seen it the first time Rania looked at her: not surprise, not jealousy in any simple sense, but cold recognition. Serali was proof of insult, proof of Vulmar’s appetite. Rania’s cruelty began before Serali understood the rules well enough to survive it.

At first, Serali made it worse.

She answered when she should have lowered her head. She stared back when Rania wanted her eyes on the floor. She corrected a tutor’s translation in front of a lady-in-waiting and smiled when the woman went red. She refused to call Rania “Your Majesty” once, only once, and spent three days locked in a room so dark she could not see her own hands.

That was when she learned the first embarrassing truth about herself.

She was afraid of the dark.

For a Night Fae girl, there were few weaknesses more humiliating. Darkness was supposed to be an inheritance. Comfort. Birthright. Shadow should have answered her like kin. Instead, the palace made darkness into a mouth that swallowed the world whole. Rania learned that quickly. So did Vandra. So did anyone cruel enough to enjoy watching a child of night tremble when the candles were taken away.

After that, dark rooms became a punishment.

Not dim rooms. Not ordinary night. Pitch dark. Windowless closets. Cellars with no crack beneath the door. Storage rooms where the air went sour and thick, where Serali could hear rats in the walls and her own breath turning too loud. They left her there until she stopped screaming. Then, later, until she learned not to begin.

The fear did not leave.

It only learned manners.

Serali learned too.

Not obedience. Never that, not truly. But calculation.

She learned which words cost too much. Which silences were shields. Which insults could be hidden inside courtesy so neatly that only Rania heard them and could not punish her without explaining why. She learned to choose her moments of rebellion, to spend defiance like coin instead of flinging it like blood against stone.

When Vulmar lost interest entirely, Rania put her to work.

The small room was taken away.

Serali was moved to a narrow closet near the kitchens, barely large enough to lie down in if she curled on her side. There was no bed, no washstand, no window. Only a pile of old rags on the floor that smelled of lye, smoke, and damp stone. The door did not lock from the inside. It barely closed at all unless the wood swelled in wet weather, and then sometimes she woke with the sudden animal terror of being trapped.

The closet became not a room, but a place where Serali was stored between tasks.

She was sent down to the kitchens, to the laundry rooms, to the stillrooms, to the icy service corridors where no one important had to see her unless Rania wanted to be reminded of her own grievance. She ate what the cooks scraped from platters and wore what could be altered down from discarded gowns.

At first, she tried to make friends among the other girls.

That, too, was punished.

When Rania learned of it, she had the first girl flogged and Serali made to watch. The lesson was not subtle. Kindness given to Serali would cost someone else. After that, most servants avoided her. The ones who did not were careful, and Serali learned to be careful back.

Rania did not always beat her in person. Sometimes she sent Vandra, the housemistress, whose hands were so thin and white that they seemed more like instruments than flesh. Vandra took pleasure in small humiliations: making Serali repeat her cleaning tasks five times over, dragging her out of bed at midnight to run errands through the icy halls, locking her in the root cellar with only a pitcher of water and a piece of hard bread. Other times, Rania summoned Serali to her chamber and made her stand in silence for hours, just to see how long it would take for her to sway or shiver or blink.

Serali learned not to give her the satisfaction quickly.

Then she learned that sometimes satisfaction was cheaper than pain.

By the time Serali finally met Prince Cillian, her half-brother, though neither of them called it that, she had already stopped expecting kindness. Cillian was different from the others in the palace. He was not cruel, but he was not soft either. He moved through the halls with the tension of someone who had learned to balance on a blade.

The first time he spoke to her, it was to correct her pronunciation of an old word from a forgotten dialect.

The second time, he gave her a book and said nothing else.

The third time, he found her in the corridor after Vandra had left fresh welts on her forearms, and he did not comment on the blood or the trembling. Instead, he taught her a simple spell to take the sting away and how to do it so no one would notice.

It was from Cillian that she learned the real rules of the palace: how to avoid the queen’s eyes, how to move unseen, how to wield her own pain as a shield. He did not tell her to stop resisting. He taught her how to survive long enough for resistance to matter.

At night, sometimes, he taught her to draw power from the shadows, to gather it in her palms and shape it into something that could not be erased. He warned her to keep it secret, but she already knew that.

And when he learned about the dark, he did not laugh.

That was the first mercy.

The second was smaller and more dangerous: candles.

Not many. Never enough to draw notice. A stub tucked inside a book. A thin taper wrapped in cloth and hidden beneath the rags. A little box of matches passed to her in the corridor without a word. Cillian told her where to place the flame so it would not show beneath the door. He showed her how to cup shadow around light rather than snuff it out, how to let darkness hide the candle instead of consume it.

After that, Serali slept with a small light burning whenever she dared.

A foolish thing, perhaps.

A humiliating thing, if anyone found out.

A Night Fae girl afraid of the dark, hiding a candle like contraband in a kitchen closet.

But the flame was hers.

Or close enough.

Nothing in her life belonged to her except her silence, her rage, the moments she chose not to spend them, and sometimes, when the palace slept, and no one came to drag her into the dark, one small forbidden light.

Now, as Serali worked through the day’s tasks, laundry, then the root cellars, then the endless, useless dusting of the outer hallways, she let the memories surge and ebb. She remembered the taste of her father’s tea, bitter with the last leaves of winter. She remembered Kira’s hands, always sticky with honey, and her mother’s voice humming low when she thought Serali was asleep. She remembered the cold, blue-lit nights when she would sit on the porch with her father, watching the stars blink awake through the trees.

All of it was so far away that it might as well have belonged to someone else. She was not that girl anymore. She did not remember what it felt like to be warm.
