The Queen's Mage

A gasp cut short.

Then a man’s low, slurred voice, too close to anger to be mistaken for flirtation.

Serali stopped.

The festival shifted around the sound, bodies adjusting without acknowledging why. A ripple at the edge of the crowd. A forced-open space where there should have been none.

She knew that shape.

She had seen it in palace corridors, in servant halls, in the way people made room for cruelty so they could later claim they had not seen its face.

A man in a workman’s jacket, broad-shouldered, drunk enough that he bled into the air around him, had a girl by the wrist. The girl was young, maybe sixteen, her festival scarf knotted tight to cover her hair, a basket of bread smashed and ground under his boot. She pulled. He pulled back harder.

The sound of it, her gasp, the low grunt as she tried to twist away, should have cut through the noise.

But nobody looked.

Not really.

The nearest onlookers stepped back a pace, not forward.

There it was, then.

The same world after all.

Serali’s jaw locked.

Her first thought was to keep walking, to let it pass.

The ship left at dawn. Her glamour still held. Her magic was hidden. Her name was false. Her future, if she was very careful, sat folded against her chest in cheap paper and smudged ink.

Her second thought trampled the first.

She crossed the distance in three long strides, weaving through a knot of gawkers until she stood a foot from the man’s shoulder. She did not raise her voice. She only said, “Let her go,” in the kind of tone that had once made palace guards hesitate, if only for a moment.

He didn’t. He shoved the girl behind him and turned to Serali, his mouth twisted in a smile that made a joke of every bruise she’d ever seen. “Not your business, darling,” he said, his voice thick with old wine and something meaner. “Go buy yourself a sweet and let the grown folk talk.”

She saw the move before he made it, a half-step to block her, a hand reaching as if to steady her elbow, an old trick dressed as chivalry. She leaned into it, bringing her own hand up, palm open, just as he tried to push her away. The moment hung, balanced on the edge of her patience.

She spoke again, this time for him alone. “I said, let her go.”

The man laughed and shoved.

What happened next was not a decision. It was reflex, old and automatic as breathing. She let his shove pivot her, brought her palm to his chest, and shaped the magic in the same motion. It surged up her arm, a cold snap that ate the air, and the shield snapped into being; an oval of force, faintly blue and threaded with shadow, hard as a thrown stone.

He hit the barrier chest-first. For a second, he bounced, then the force inverted and he tumbled back two steps into a rack of spice jars. The rack collapsed, glass shattering, powders rising in a brown and red cloud that coated his face and made his eyes stream. He lay there, stunned, coughing and blinking, the crowd opening around him like he was something contagious.

The market stilled.

Every head turned to her, the air gone thick and brittle. The girl she’d tried to help had bolted, melting into the sea of faces. Even the children stopped their shrieking.

Serali felt the magic drain from her hand, and with it came a heat, a flush that started at her fingers and moved up, scalding and merciless. She glanced down and saw it: the brown hair at her temple was leaking away, replaced by the ink-black she remembered from the mirror. Her skin, too, was losing its painted Sun Fae warmth, bleaching to the pale hue of her people. Her eyes stung. When she blinked, she knew what color they would be.

The glamour had burned off in a single heartbeat.

Someone near the fallen man shouted, “Night Fae!” The words rippled through the crowd, echoing down the avenue and back again, amplified by a dozen voices eager for an answer to the disruption.

Serali did not run. She let her hands fall to her sides, every muscle thrumming with the urge to disappear, to fold back into the dark. She stood exactly as she was, letting the word hang in the air. Night Fae. It was an accusation and a threat.

The man on the ground tried to rise, blinking away the powder and looking at her as if she’d spit in the sun itself. “You saw that!” he yelled, voice cracking. “Witch—she’s a witch, she’s—” He didn’t finish; the words drowned in the tide of anger that swept over the market. What had been a sea of indifference curdled to a mob in seconds. A mother yanked her child away, covering his eyes. A vendor crossed himself and ducked behind his stall.

Serali took a single step back, scanning the edges of the crowd for an exit. To her left, an alley ran between two shuttered grocers, dark, but not deserted. To her right, a gap between the cloth merchant and the bread stall, barely wide enough for a cat. Behind her, nothing but the blank wall of a bathhouse and the upturned faces of a hundred people who suddenly had a villain to hate.

The city guards moved fast. Four of them in the polished copper of the Myrae watch, their boots too clean for real work, their swords drawn. “Hold!” the tallest one shouted, but he didn’t expect her to obey. The other three fanned out, forming a half-ring, pushing the crowd back with the flat of their blades.

Serali considered: run, fight, vanish. She could try to outpace them, but she knew how this played, she’d been the mouse in the palace too long to believe in escape for its own sake.

The guards closed ranks with an efficiency that suggested they’d practiced for this. Their voices battered the air—Clear back! Make room!—as they shoved the onlookers deeper into the press. The crowd obeyed, but only so far as to widen the ring, to give themselves a better view of whatever blood or spectacle was about to unfold.

She threw up a second shield, more desperate than the first. This time the force stung as it left her, like ice water on raw skin. The first guard, the tall one, ran straight into it and was knocked off his feet, sliding back to skid against the pavers. Two more guards circled, blades up. Serali backed away, her hands raised in a show of peace, but the magic still crackled at her fingertips, visible and damning.

She didn’t mean to shout, but the words came out raw and sharp, slicing through the clamor: “I didn’t do anything wrong.”

She let the shield drop, hands still raised, palms open to show she held nothing. “He was hurting her. You all saw.”

The crowd, ever hungry, lapped it up. Some voices rose in her favor, a few, thin and uncertain, but the rest turned, as crowds always do, to the side of consequence.

The guards advanced as a unit. “On your knees,” their leader barked, though the order wavered at the end. “Do it, witch.” He spat the last word, loud enough to reassure the mob that he held the right opinion.

Serali did not kneel. She stepped backward, slow, until her heel caught the curb of the bathhouse. “I was just trying to help her,” she said again.

Someone in the crowd jeered; someone else threw a wadded twist of bread. Serali ducked, eyes locked on the opening between two food stalls, her best shot. She broke for it, ducking low, but a fifth guard came from behind. He must have been waiting in the gap, or maybe he just moved faster than she thought possible; either way, he tackled her hard, his armored shoulder driving the air from her lungs. She hit the stone with her face and tasted iron and old lye. Her chin split open. Her hands, thrown out to break the fall, shredded on the cobblestones.

For a second, she could not move. Pain fuzzed the world into static. She tried to roll, to pull herself upright, but the guard was already on her, a knee in her back, his palm braced on the nape of her neck.

“Stay down,” he hissed, breath sour.

She got her left elbow free and jammed it back with all the leverage her body allowed. The tip of her elbow found soft flesh, ribs, probably, and the guard let out a noise that was less than a word, more than a grunt. He loosened for a heartbeat, and she wriggled out from under him, half-crawling, half-staggering toward the alley mouth. She made it three paces before two more guards landed on her arms, wrenching them up and behind until her shoulder screamed with the old injury.

She spat blood and kept fighting, lashing out with her boots, her head, her words. “Get off me!” she snapped, but they only ground her face harder to the street, her cheek pressed into a slurry of old wine and fruit peels and gravel. A shadow fell over her; the tall guard had recovered, his mouth drawn to a straight, humorless line. He drew a length of black iron from his belt, the manacles already gaping wide, ready for her wrists.

Panic flared, sudden and primal. She yanked hard, trying to twist free. The magic came up under her skin, hot and cold at once, and she pulled on it the way Cillian had taught her, to break, to scatter, to make herself a weapon even now. The guards braced, expecting another shield, but what came out was a concussive wave, not directed so much as detonated, a desperate, haphazard burst. It blew the two guards off her left arm, sent the tall one staggering back a full pace, but cost her: the magic ran dry in the next instant, her vision blackening at the edges, her whole body left cold and shaking.

She managed to stand, hunched and swaying, her hands splayed and fingers crooked like talons. “Don’t,” she warned, voice slurred and broken.

The tall guard did not hesitate. He lunged, the manacles snapping shut on her wrists with a sound she felt in her teeth. The iron burned, not literally, but in a way that went deeper, a wrongness that shot up her arms and left her unable to focus, unable to move the right way. Her magic didn’t just fade, it vanished, gone so completely she felt as if her blood had been bled out and replaced with something leaden and false.

Serali went rigid. She tried to flex her hands, to call even a flicker of shadow, but there was nothing. The iron held her in place, sapped her will, left her as powerless as she’d been as a child in the palace cellars.

The tall guard hoisted her by the shoulder, fingers digging into the old bruise at the base of her neck. “You’re coming with us,” he said, in a tone that brooked no argument.

She didn’t stop fighting. Even when two more guards latched on to her arms, even when they lifted her off the ground, she twisted and kicked, used every bit of leverage her body could offer. She caught one of them with her heel, felt the soft crunch of cartilage under the boot, but it only made them hold tighter, rougher, like men who’d been promised a bonus for every bruise.

She tried to speak, tried to say she wasn’t a spy, she’d only wanted to help, that the woman was right there, but the words tangled in her throat, and the crowd was not listening. The faces in the market had shifted from fear to something more complicated: disgust, maybe, or a cold, satisfied hunger. The children watched with wide eyes, bread sticks forgotten. The woman she’d tried to help was gone, already lost to the night.

A tomato smacked her cheek, burst and slid down her jaw. The acid stung in the split skin.

“Witch,” someone muttered, not even loud.

“Monster,” another voice chimed, the accent pure city.

She stopped looking for the girl, stopped looking for anyone. No one was going to intervene.

The guards marched her through the avenue, the festival’s noise and light flickering behind them. The crowd parted to let them pass, then folded closed again, muting the event to a rumor before the blood on her face had even dried.

At the lower palace gates, the world narrowed. Serali tried to memorize the pattern of stone, the faces of the guards, the line of shadow where the gates joined. She knew the way of dungeons; she’d seen enough to know the difference between the ones that let you leave and the ones that did not. The iron on her wrists stayed cold, an unrelenting promise of what waited below.

The festival behind her roared on. The lanterns burned brighter, if anything, the music and laughter leaking through the stone like a mockery of the girl being hauled in for slaughter.

Inside, the passage was lined with sconces, each holding a cup of blue fire. The light did not warm; it only made the hallway seem more empty. The guards did not speak, not to her, not to each other. They walked in a measured, even pace, as if she were just a sack of grain to be weighed and stored.

At the end of the corridor, a door stood open. A cell, probably, or a holding pen. Maybe worse. She forced herself upright, refusing to be dragged like a dead thing.

The guard with the broken nose met her eyes as they pushed her through. His was the only face she remembered. For a second, his gaze softened, no, not softened, just emptied of malice, as if she were already dead and he’d moved on to other things.

They threw her down, locked the manacles to an iron ring in the wall, and left.

The door slammed, leaving her in the stink of old straw and her own blood.

She waited, breathing slow and shallow, willing herself to feel nothing. But the iron burned, and the magic stayed gone, and the only thing left was the memory of the market, how she’d tried, and how it had changed nothing.

Somewhere above, the lanterns swayed and the music spilled into the night.

She pressed her forehead to the cold stone, and did not move, not for a very long time.

Serali had learned long ago that queens announced themselves first by silence.

When the corridor beyond her cell went utterly still, she knew one had come.
