The Queen's Mage

Allandra turned to survey the hall one last time, scanning for Everly. She found her on the far end, pressed into a corner between two noble girls, holding court with all the unselfconscious arrogance of a child born to it. She was safe. For now.

Allandra squared her shoulders and walked into the palace’s heart, where the music of the city could not reach.

The dungeons were built to chill even the fire out of a Sun Fae’s veins. The farther she descended, the colder and more silent the world became. She welcomed it. Welcomed the shift from the performance of the feast to the clarity of purpose that had always served her best.

Above, she was queen beneath glass and gold, watched by every courtier who needed reassurance that the Mantle had not chosen poorly.

Below, there was only stone, iron, and consequence.

She was the Mantle’s chosen. The last time a Night Fae mage had breached this deep into Myrae, it had cost her nearly everything. Her father. Her mother. Her husband. The easy belief that a locked door, a loyal guard, or a bright hall could keep death outside where it belonged.

She would not allow it again.

Daravan walked half a pace behind and to her left, silent as a drawn blade. He had given her the report quickly as they descended. The prisoner had been taken in the lower market. Female. Night Fae. Alone, apparently. Powerful enough to throw shields under pressure. Not trained like an assassin, according to the watch captain, but the watch captain had also been shouting over festival music, mob panic, and his own bloodied nose.

Alone, young, untrained.

Allandra trusted none of those words.

At the bottom stair, Daravan handed her a single key, cold iron etched with the symbol of the Mantle. He did not speak, only inclined his head, then stood aside.

Allandra fitted the key to the lock, turned it, and opened the door.

Inside, on the far wall, chained by both wrists to an iron ring, was the prisoner.

Even slumped, she radiated a kind of alertness. Dark hair slicked to her scalp with sweat. Hands swollen from struggle. Face bruised but unbowed. Her lower lip was split. Dried blood marked her chin, and something red, tomato, perhaps, had dried along one cheek in an ugly smear. The festival had not merely turned on her. It had enjoyed itself.

When the woman looked up, her eyes caught the light from the corridor.

Not blue. Not gold.

Silvered violet, just as Daravan had said.

Xuiven eyes.

Allandra stood in the doorway, letting the cold settle in.

“What is your name?” she said, her voice carrying through the stone like a thrown spear.

The prisoner’s chin lifted. “Does it matter?”

Allandra entered, shutting the door behind her. “It will. Eventually.”

The silence held, thick and perfect.

Allandra studied the woman’s face, the set of her jaw, the places where her mask had cracked but not fallen. She saw defiance, exhaustion, fear held so tightly it had become something sharper than courage. She saw the cold, relentless focus of someone who had learned to survive by choosing which parts of herself could be afforded.

That meant nothing.

Spies could be afraid.

Assassins could be wounded.

Night Fae could look half-dead and still have a knife hidden in the room.

“If you know who I am,” Allandra said, “you’ll understand how little I value lies.”

“I know who you are.”

The woman’s voice was rough from shouting, or blood, or both. Her accent was Lyehiran, but not court-polished. Not exactly. There were strange edges in it, a formal correctness worn thin by years of other kinds of speech.

“I also know how little your court values mercy.”

Allandra let a hint of a smile ghost her lips. “Then let’s not waste either.”

She stepped farther into the cell.

The prisoner’s hands tightened in the chains. A small reaction, quickly contained. Her gaze flicked to the door, the hinges, the key in Allandra’s hand, then back to Allandra’s face.

Cataloguing.

Measuring.

Not helpless, then.

“What is your name?” Allandra asked again.

For a moment, the prisoner looked as if she might refuse. Then her mouth twisted, not quite a smile.

“Serali.”

Allandra waited.

The woman did not continue.

“Serali what?”

“Just Serali.”

“No one is just anything.”

“That must be comforting to people with names worth keeping.”

Allandra’s eyes narrowed.

The woman, Serali, looked away first, but not in submission. More as if she had decided the wall deserved her attention more than Allandra did.

“Your full name,” Allandra said.

“I do not have one.”

“Everyone has one.”

“I am a bastard,” Serali said flatly. “Bastards do not always inherit the luxury of syllables.”

There was no shame in the words.

That made Allandra distrust them more.

A rehearsed answer could be made blunt. A good liar knew when to sound wounded, when to sound bored, when to make truth and bitterness indistinguishable.

“Your father’s name, then.”

Serali’s face went very still.

There.

Not fear, exactly. Something older. Something locked away so fast Allandra might have missed it if she had not spent two years learning to read a court that wanted her either married, dead, or grateful.

“No one important,” Serali said.

Allandra looked at her eyes.

Then at her hands.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

“No one important.”

“That is what I said.”

“Daughters of no one important do not usually possess strong shadow magic.”

Serali’s mouth tightened.

“They also do not usually have Xuiven eyes,” Allandra continued. “Or hands like yours.”

Serali glanced down before she could stop herself.

Allandra saw the moment she realized what she had revealed.

Good.

The prisoner’s hands were bruised and swollen from the guards, yes, but beneath the fresh injuries were older marks. Scarred knuckles. Calloused palms. Thin lines along the fingers. A crescent scar near the base of one thumb. Roughness along the heel of the hand where skin had thickened from repeated pressure. Not decorative hands. Not court hands. Not the untouched fingers of a hidden noblewoman raised in silk.

To Allandra, they looked like hands trained to fight.

Not beautifully. Not formally.

But often.

“You have the eyes of a royal house,” Allandra said, “magic the watch could barely contain, and hands that have seen more violence than most soldiers’ daughters. Do not insult me by claiming your father was no one.”

Something flickered in Serali’s face.

Anger.

Good. Anger was usually closer to truth than fear.

“My father was no one important to you.”

“Convenient distinction.”

“A true one.”

“His name.”

Serali looked back at her. “No.”

The word was soft.

Not uncertain.

Allandra’s own temper cooled by a degree. Refusal had shapes. This one did not feel like strategy. It felt like a door barred from the inside.

That, too, could be an act.

She let the silence punish the answer.

Serali bore it badly but did not break. Her breathing remained even. Her shoulders stayed square despite the pull of the chains. The iron on her wrists had reddened the skin beneath them, and though Night Fae did not burn the way Sun Fae did under some metals, iron had its own unpleasant way of making magic remember the body.

Allandra took another step closer.

“Why are you in Avalusia?”

Serali laughed once.

It was a small, cracked sound, more disbelief than humor.

“To leave.”

“To leave what?”

“This continent, ideally.”

“With passage arranged?”

Serali’s gaze sharpened. “Yes.”

“On what ship?”

“I don’t know its name.”

“You purchased passage on a ship whose name you do not know?”

“I purchased passage on the ship that would take my money and not ask questions.”

“Convenient again.”

“Most useful things are.”

Despite herself, Allandra nearly admired that.

Nearly.

“When does it sail?”

“Morning.”

“From Myrae harbor?”

“No, from the palace fountain. Yes, from Myrae harbor.”

Allandra did not move.

Serali’s mouth shut.

Somewhere above them, faint through layers of stone, the festival roared. Music, laughter, drums. The city celebrating harvest while a Night Fae woman with Xuiven eyes bled in the queen’s dungeon and claimed she had only wanted a ship.

Allandra had heard worse lies.

She had also heard better ones.

“You expect me to believe,” Allandra said slowly, “that a Night Fae mage crossed into Avalusia alone, entered Myrae during the Harvest Festival, used magic in a public square, and did all of this not as a spy, not as an agent of Lyehira, not as an assassin, but because she wanted to buy passage on a nameless ship.”

Serali held her gaze.

“Yes.”

Allandra waited.

Serali added, “It sounds stupid when you say it like that.”

“It sounds stupid in any arrangement.”

“It was working until someone decided to drag a girl into an alley.”

Allandra stilled.

The report had mentioned a disturbance. A man. A local girl. The watch had not been clear on that point, mostly because the watch disliked admitting when its presence became necessary only after someone else had acted.

“What girl?”

Serali’s expression sharpened into something dangerous.

“The one everyone pretended not to see.”

Allandra said nothing.

Serali leaned forward as far as the chains allowed. “A man had her by the wrist. She was trying to get away. He was drunk, angry, twice her size, and everyone around them suddenly found the stones very interesting.”

The words came faster now, roughened by fury.

“I told him to let her go. He did not. He put hands on me. I shielded. That burned off the glamour. The crowd shouted Night Fae, and then your very polished guards put my face into the street.”

Her mouth twisted.

“Efficiently, I grant them.”

Allandra watched her.

“That is your defense?”

“That I stopped a man from taking a girl against her will? Yes. I realize it is a strange custom. Do Avalusians not believe in good deeds, or do they only object when Night Fae do them?”

Allandra’s eyes cooled.

Serali’s chin lifted, as if she knew exactly how foolish the words were and had chosen them anyway.

There was blood on her teeth.

A woman in chains, beaten by the watch, ironed to a wall, and still she was needling a queen because silence would have cost her something she valued more than safety.

Allandra understood that impulse.

She disliked understanding it.

“You used magic in a crowded square,” she said.

“I used a shield.”

“You threw a man through a market stall.”

“He should not have been standing there.”

“He was an Avalusian subject.”

“He was hurting someone.”

“And you are Night Fae.”

Serali’s face closed.

There it was.

The thing neither of them could step around.

Allandra let the words stand. Cruel, perhaps. Necessary, certainly. She had a city above her still raw with old grief and old fear. A Night Fae mage revealed in the lower market on festival night could become panic by morning. Panic became rumor. Rumor became blood. If the prisoner was bait, if Lyehira wanted a pretext, if Vulmar had sent a bastard daughter with royal eyes into her city to test the Mantle’s strength—

No.

Allandra would not let her own pity become a gate left unbarred.

“What were your orders?” she asked.

Serali blinked.

Then stared.

“My what?”

“Your orders.”

“I was not sent.”

“You expect me to believe you crossed the border of your own will.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I told you. To leave.”

“To leave Lyehira?”

“To leave everything.”

The answer struck strangely.

Not loudly. Not with dramatic force. Simply landed, and refused to move.

Allandra stepped closer. Close enough now to see that Serali’s lashes were dark with sweat, that one eye had a bruise blooming beneath it, that the tremor in her arms came partly from strain and partly from refusing to show strain.

“You fled,” Allandra said.

Serali looked at her for a long moment.

“Yes.”

“From whom?”

Serali’s mouth pressed flat.

“Lyehira.”

“That is not a person.”

“It can be.”

Allandra’s patience thinned.

“From whom?”

Serali said nothing.

Allandra reached out and, with one finger, lifted Serali’s chin.

The prisoner went rigid.

Not merely angry now.

Afraid.

It flashed through her before she could hide it: the old reflex of a person who had learned that a hand under the chin could be inspection, mockery, ownership, threat.

Allandra saw it.

She also saw the way Serali did not pull away, because the chains would have made the movement useless and she did not waste effort on unwinnable gestures.

“I am Allandra of the Luina,” she said, her voice low. “Mantle of Sun and Sovereign of Avalusia. You are Night Fae by blood and by deed. You have royal eyes, dangerous magic, and a story too convenient to trust. Tell me why you are here.”

Serali held her gaze.

Close, Allandra could see that her eyes were not simply violet. There was silver around the iris, a pale ring like moonlight trapped beneath ice. Xuiven, yes. But not only Xuiven. Something rawer. Stranger.

“I came to leave,” Serali said. “But you people never allow that, do you?”

Allandra felt something inside her break, then reform.

Not sympathy.

Recognition, maybe. Unwelcome and quickly buried.

She released Serali’s chin.

The prisoner’s jaw tightened as if the loss of contact angered her more than the touch.

“You will remain here,” Allandra said, turning away before her expression could betray the wrong thing. “Until you give me more than that.”

“I have given you the truth.”

“No,” Allandra said. “You have given me the shape of a truth and hidden the knife inside it.”

Serali laughed again, quieter.

“Then perhaps your Majesty should search herself. I seem to have misplaced mine.”

Allandra paused at the door.

For one breath, silence.

Then she looked back.

Serali’s face was pale, bloodied, exhausted. But her eyes still burned.

Allandra wondered what kind of court had made a woman like that.

Then she hated herself for wondering.

“I will get the truth from you later,” she said.

“People keep promising me that.”

The reply was too soft.

Too bitter.

Allandra opened the door.

Cold corridor light cut across the cell, bright over Serali’s chained wrists, the bruises, the blood, the eyes that did not belong to no one important.

Allandra stepped out and shut the door so gently it made no sound at all.

In the corridor, Daravan waited, eyes fixed on her face.

“Majesty?”

“Double the guard,” she said.

His expression did not change. “You believe she is dangerous.”

“I know she is dangerous.”

“An assassin?”

Allandra looked toward the closed door.

Through the iron and stone, she could feel nothing. No magic. No answer from the Mantle. Only the echo of Serali’s voice.

I came to leave.

“I’m not sure,” Allandra said at last.

Daravan waited.

Allandra hated that he knew better than to fill silence.

“She is hiding something,” she said.

“That much was clear from the moment she opened her mouth.”

Despite herself, Allandra almost smiled.

Almost.

“She claims she was only passing through. That she bought passage on a ship leaving in the morning. That she revealed herself stopping a man in the market from taking a girl against her will.”

Daravan absorbed this.

“And you do not believe her.”

Allandra’s gaze remained on the door.

“I believe she believes part of it.”

“That is inconvenient.”

“Yes.”

“Shall I send someone to the harbor?”

“Quietly. Find the ship. Find the ticket seller. Find the girl from the market if she can be found, and the man Serali struck.”

Daravan’s brows lifted slightly at the name.

“She gave you one.”

“She gave me one word.”

“A start.”

“Or another lie.”

“Also a start.”

Allandra looked at him.

Daravan inclined his head. No apology. Only acknowledgment.

“Do not speak to her again,” Allandra said. “No one does. Not the watch, not the lower guards, not some ambitious clerk hoping to prove himself useful. Food and water only, through the door. No questions.”

“Majesty.”

Allandra turned toward the stairs.

Above them, the feast waited. The Hall of First Light, the court, the colored glass, Everly’s half-eaten tart, Hagen’s watchful amusement, the thousand eyes measuring whether their queen had been shaken by whatever message came from below.

She had not been shaken.

She had only been handed a problem with violet eyes, shadow magic, and a story that could not possibly be true.

Allandra returned to the feast with the lightness of a woman who knew exactly how much she had lost, and how little it mattered now that there was work to be done.
