The Queen's Mage

Allandra made it until midday before she realized she had read the same sentence nine times.

The report concerned Aurenne.

It should have been simple. A packet of diplomatic correspondence carried across the western sea. Three letters from Queen Celestine’s court regarding spring trade routes. One proposal for a joint naval exercise in the summer. A politely worded inquiry about whether Avalusia intended to increase patrols near the southern shipping lanes after recent pirate activity.

Allandra knew this.

She knew it because Aurenne had been Avalusia’s closest ally for nearly a century. She knew it because she and Celestine had exchanged enough letters over the years to recognize each other’s moods through diplomatic phrasing alone. She knew it because ruling was, more often than not, the art of finding meaning in familiar words arranged in slightly different orders.

Still, the sentence would not stay in her head.

Her eyes moved over the ink.

Her mind moved elsewhere.

Serali’s mouth.

Allandra went very still.

The thought had not arrived clothed in policy. Not as testimony. Not as risk. Not as Xuiven blood, Cillian’s sister, Vulmar’s daughter, Night Fae mage of unknown affiliation. Those she understood. Those belonged on paper. Those could be locked in a war room under her seal and handled by process, caution, fear.

This had not been that.

This had been Serali’s mouth shaping the word no.

Not the frightened one. Not the broken one at the door when Allandra left. The earlier one. The sharp one. The no that had leapt out useless and furious when Allandra asked who her father was, as if defiance alone might throw itself between Serali and the truth.

Allandra pressed her fingers against the report until the parchment creased.

No.

She would not do this.

She reached for the next page.

Trade figures.

Good. Numbers were reliable. Numbers did not have violet eyes, or wrists wrapped in fresh bandages, or a voice that turned bitter when it was trying not to tremble. Numbers did not look at Allandra as if she were both the lock and the key.

The first column blurred.

Serali’s hands.

Not beautiful, her mind supplied, as if correction could make the thought acceptable. Not soft. Not delicate. Thin from hunger. Scarred at the knuckles. Fingertips still stiff from the iron. Hands that had scrubbed floors and stolen bread and shaped shadow in secret while a kingdom that should have protected her called her mistake, burden, blood.

Hands that had curled around the edge of a tray that morning.

Hands that might have reached for Allandra if the restraints had not caught.

Allandra stood so abruptly her chair scraped back.

The sound brought the secretary at the far desk half to his feet.

“Majesty?”

“Leave.”

He blinked. “The petitions—”

“Leave them.”

He gathered his papers in a flurry of terror and silk cuffs, bowed too quickly, and vanished.

The door closed.

Silence rushed in.

Allandra remained standing behind her desk, both hands braced flat against the polished surface. Her pulse beat too hard in her wrists, in her throat, behind her teeth.

This was stress.

That was all.

Stress had physical effects. Lia had explained that more than once, usually while informing generals that exhaustion was not a patriotic virtue and bleeding men did not become less dead because they were embarrassed. Allandra had slept poorly. She had learned too much too quickly. She had a council deadline, a state secret, an injured prisoner, and the daughter of her enemy locked in the eastern wing.

Of course her mind circled the problem.

Of course it returned to Serali.

Serali was the problem.

That explanation held until Allandra thought of Serali’s body.

Not as a wound. Not as evidence. Not as a political consequence wrapped in bruised skin.

As body.

The fine angle of her throat when she looked away. The dark fall of hair against clean linen. The sharp economy of movement, even injured, as if every inch of her had learned the cost of existing. The hollow beneath her cheekbone. The stubborn lift of her chin. The thinness that should have made Allandra feel only horror and instead made some ruinous part of her want to see Serali fed, warmed, rested, touched only with permission and never with fear.

Touched.

Allandra shut her eyes.

“No.”

The word vanished into the empty room.

It should have steadied her.

It did not.

By afternoon, she had moved from the solar to the war room, then from the war room to the western gallery, then from the gallery to the small inner courtyard where the orange trees grew in painted ceramic pots. She did not go east. Not once.

That was restraint.

That was judgment.

That was proof she had not lost herself entirely.

She stopped beneath an archway and realized she knew, with no evidence at all, that Serali was awake.

The knowledge came without sound. No report. No messenger. No guard at the door. Just certainty, sudden and intimate, unfolding beneath her breastbone.

Awake.

Afraid.

Not acutely. Not in immediate danger. A low fear. A waiting fear. The kind that had learned patience because panic wasted strength.

Allandra gripped the stone arch until the carved edge bit her palm.

She did not know that.

She could not know that.

“Majesty?”

Daravan’s voice came from behind her.

Allandra released the stone and turned.

He stood several paces away, careful as always. Too careful, now. Since the council chamber, he had developed the look of a man approaching a cracked bridge while pretending not to notice the drop beneath it.

“What is it?” she asked.

“The eastern rotation is adjusted. Discreetly.”

“Good.”

“No one has entered her room without Lia or the assigned attendant.”

The assigned attendant.

Mara, a part of Allandra’s mind supplied.

She had no reason to know that name mattered. No reason for the thought of Serali learning it to land under her ribs like a small, dangerous light.

Daravan waited.

Allandra realized too late that she had not answered.

“Good,” she said again.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

“Majesty.”

“If you ask whether I am well, I will send you to inspect harbor chains for corrosion.”

“I was going to ask whether you had eaten.”

“That is worse.”

“Have you?”

Allandra looked at him.

Daravan looked back.

She hated him.

Briefly.

“No,” she said.

He nodded once, as if she had confirmed a tactical concern. “I will have food sent to your apartments.”

“I did not request food.”

“I know.”

“Daravan.”

“Yes, Majesty?”

“You are not my nurse.”

“No. Lia would be harsher.”

That, unfortunately, was true.

He bowed before she could decide whether to be grateful or offended, and left her in the courtyard with the orange trees and the impossible knowledge that Serali was awake in the eastern wing.

By evening, the thought had changed shape.

It was no longer only her face, her hands, her body. Those were troubling enough, but they could have been desire twisted by circumstance, pity with a pulse, loneliness finding the worst possible vessel. Allandra could have despised herself for that and survived it.

This was worse.

She kept thinking of Serali’s spirit.

There was no better word for it, though Allandra hated the imprecision. Spirit sounded like something Solveran storytellers used when they wanted to make stubbornness prettier. But there it was: the fierce, battered core of her. The part that had survived hunger without becoming hollow, survived cruelty without becoming obedient, survived fear without surrendering its tongue.

The part that had stood between a stranger and harm in the middle of an Avalusian crowd.

The part that had looked at Everly and not seen a hostage.

The part that had told the truth and understood, a heartbeat too late, what truth would cost.

That was the thought that undid her.

Not Serali’s mouth.

Not her body.

Not even her eyes.

The story has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.

The fact that Allandra wanted, with a force that made no political sense, to protect the part of Serali that still knew how to say no.

At dinner, Everly asked whether she could bring her wooden soldiers to breakfast the next morning because “they have opinions about treaties too.”

Allandra said yes.

Everly looked delighted.

Allandra had no memory of deciding.

After Everly was put to bed, Allandra dismissed the servants, left Daravan’s report unopened, and stood in the center of her apartments until the lamps burned low around her.

She could still stop this.

Not the situation. Not Serali’s blood. Not the council. But this inward collapse, this unnatural fixation, this constant turning of her mind toward one locked room.

There were explanations.

Shadow magic. A compulsion subtle enough to leave no obvious trace. Some old Xuiven working triggered by proximity, by blood, by the Mantle itself. A trauma response. Guilt. Exhaustion. Hunger. Grief returning in a shape her body mistook for want because the alternative was uglier.

There were explanations.

There had to be.

Allandra crossed to her desk and opened the drawer where Serali’s testimony lay beneath her private seal.

She did not touch it.

The folded pages seemed to know her anyway.

Beautiful.

Innocent.

Dangerous.

Serali.

Allandra closed the drawer.

Then opened it again.

Then closed it harder.

The sound cracked through the room.

She pressed both hands to the edge of the desk and lowered her head.

A queen did not come apart over a prisoner.

A widow did not look at her husband’s murderer’s daughter and think of lips.

A mother did not let fascination endanger a kingdom.

A ruler did not mistake a cage for care simply because she had lined it with softer cloth.

And yet in the eastern wing, Serali was alive because Allandra had ordered it. Fed because Allandra had ordered it. Warm because Allandra had ordered it. Guarded because Allandra had ordered it.

Held because Allandra had ordered that too.

The thought struck clean.

Allandra’s breath left her.

Mine, some old and terrible instinct whispered.

She recoiled so violently she nearly knocked over the lamp.

No.

Not that.

Never that.

She stood in the silent room with her heart beating too hard and understood, finally, that whatever this was, she could not reason it away alone.

By the time she sent for Lia, the palace had gone quiet.

It was cowardice, perhaps, to wait until after midnight.

Or strategy.

At this hour, the distinction had thinned to a line she could barely see.

When the knock came, Allandra was standing at the window with her hands folded behind her back, looking down over the sleeping terraces of Myrae. The city was never wholly dark. Lanterns burned along the harbor and in the watchtowers, their reflections broken over the black sheet of the sea.

Behind her, the door opened.

“Majesty.”

Lia’s voice was soft, dry, and utterly without surprise.

Allandra did not turn at once.

“You came quickly.”

“You sent Daravan.” A pause. “He frightened the apprentice half to death.”

“That was unnecessary.”

“I told him so.”

Despite herself, Allandra almost smiled.

Almost.

Then Lia stepped farther into the room, and the healer’s gaze swept over her once.

Her expression changed.

Not much. Lia had served in three reigns and survived two wars. Her face did not give away anything cheaply.

But it changed.

Allandra felt her spine stiffen.

“Do not look at me like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you have already diagnosed me.”

“I have not.” Lia crossed the room without asking permission and set her case on the table beside the unopened reports. “Sit.”

Allandra lifted one brow.

Lia looked at her.

After a moment, Allandra sat.

It was easier than arguing.

That, too, was concerning.

Chapter 39: What Magic Knows

Lia opened her case and began laying out instruments.

A silver needle. A strip of woven light-thread. Three vials of clear solution. A polished black stone used for detecting poison. A narrow lens rimmed with gold.

Allandra watched each item touch the table and felt, absurdly, like a criminal watching evidence being arranged.

“Symptoms,” Lia said.

“Insomnia.”

“Hardly new.”

“Irritability.”

“Also hardly new.”

Allandra gave her a look.

Lia did not dignify it. “Appetite?”

“Fine.”

“Lie.”

“Reduced.”

“Better. Pain?”

“No.”

“Fever? Dizziness? Tremors? Spots in the vision?”

“No.”

“Magical backlash?”

Allandra hesitated.

Lia saw it.

“Ah,” she said.

Allandra’s jaw tightened. “Not precisely.”

“There is rarely precision in the middle of the night.” Lia took her wrist, two fingers pressing over the pulse. “Explain.”

Allandra looked toward the dark window.

That was her first mistake. Lia’s thumb shifted over the inside of her wrist, measuring.

“I may have been exposed to shadow magic.”

“May have?”

“A prisoner in our custody is a Night Fae mage. Powerful. Untrained, or badly trained. She used magic in the city.”

“The prisoner whose wrists I have been treating.”

Allandra’s gaze cut back to her. “You were not asked to assess her political significance.”

“No. I was asked to keep infection out of her blood and sensation in her fingers.” Lia’s hand remained steady around Allandra’s wrist. “I have done so. Continue.”

“I have been questioning her.”

“I assumed.”

“She may have cast something without my knowledge.”

Lia’s brows lifted. “In restraints?”

“She no longer wears the full manacles.”

“Because you ordered them removed.”

“Yes.”

“And you believe this prisoner, half-starved, injured, watched by guards, and under a dampening bracelet, enchanted you without leaving any trace on the room, the guards, or herself?”

Allandra said nothing.

Lia released her wrist.

“I see.”

“You see nothing.”

“I see a queen who would rather accuse a wounded woman of impossible sorcery than name what is troubling her.”

Allandra stood.

Lia did not move.

The room cooled by several degrees. The nearest lamp flickered, its flame pulling tall and thin.

“You forget yourself,” Allandra said.

“No.” Lia picked up the black stone and held it toward her. “I remember exactly who I am. I am the woman you summoned in the middle of the night because you are frightened, and I am too old to waste your time lying politely.”

Allandra stared at her.

For a moment, she considered sending Lia away.

It would be simple. One word. One gesture toward the door. The healer would bow, gather her case, and leave with all the old, infuriating dignity she carried like a second spine.

Then Allandra would be alone again.

The thought was suddenly unbearable.

She sat.

Lia touched the black stone to Allandra’s palm, then the inside of her elbow, then the base of her throat. The stone remained dull.

“No poison,” Lia said.

“I knew that.”

“Then you will be relieved to have it confirmed.”

She pricked Allandra’s fingertip with the silver needle and let one bead of blood fall into a vial. The liquid remained clear.

“No blood hex. No shadow rot.” Another vial glowed briefly, then settled. “No compulsion I can detect.”

“Could you detect Xuiven compulsion?”

Lia gave her a flat look. “I served your grandmother through the winter accords. I can detect Xuiven compulsion.”

Allandra looked down at her hands.

There were ink stains on the side of her thumb. She did not remember writing anything.

Lia wrapped the light-thread around Allandra’s wrist. It warmed, brightened, then dimmed to a steady gold.

“Your magic is intact. Elevated, but not unstable.” Lia studied the thread. “Heart rate higher than usual. Sleep deprivation. Stress response. Nothing that explains sending your captain to wake an old woman who had just gotten into bed.”

“I apologize for the inconvenience.”

“No, you don’t.”

Allandra’s mouth tightened.

Lia leaned back. “Tell me the rest.”

“There is no rest.”

“Majesty.”

The word held more warning than title.

Allandra rose again, because stillness had become a torment. She crossed to the window, then stopped, turned back, found the table too near and the room too small.

“I cannot concentrate.”

“That much was visible from the reports.”

“I dream when I sleep. When I do not sleep, I think of her.”

Lia went very still.

Allandra pressed on before the healer could speak. “Not intentionally. Not sentimentally. It is not—” She stopped, furious at the shape of the sentence before it could form. “She is a prisoner. A political complication. A threat.”

“Is she?”

“She is Xuiven.”

“Blood is not behavior.”

Allandra’s eyes flashed. “Blood has killed more people in this world than behavior ever managed.”

Lia accepted that with a small dip of her head. “Continue.”

Allandra looked back out at the harbor lights.

“She is Vulmar’s daughter.”

Behind her, Lia made no sound at all.

The silence was so complete that Allandra almost laughed.

“Yes,” she said. “That was my reaction as well.”

Lia’s voice, when it came, was very quiet. “Does the council know?”

“No.”

“Who does?”

“Daravan. You, now.”

“And the woman herself knows that you know?”

Allandra closed her eyes.

Serali’s face returned with brutal clarity: pale against the pillows, mouth set too hard, eyes wide with the knowledge that truth had ruined her.

“Yes.”

Lia was silent for a moment. Then, carefully, “I understand why you are unsettled.”

“No, you don’t.”

The words came too quickly.

Lia’s gaze sharpened.

Allandra hated herself for the heat climbing up her throat. She was too old for blushing. Too disciplined. Too widowed. Too crowned.

Too everything.

“She is innocent,” Allandra said.

Lia did not interrupt.

“She came here because she was running. Not from justice. From him. From Rania. From what they meant to do to her. She tried to leave the continent. She exposed herself only because a man was hurting a girl in the market.”

“I know.”

Allandra turned. “You know?”

“The guards talk. So do maids. The story changed three times before breakfast, but that part remained.”

Allandra exhaled, sharp and humorless. “A miracle.”

“Not usually. Details that shame people tend to survive rumor. No one wanted to admit they watched until the Night Fae intervened.”

That landed somewhere Allandra could not look at.

She gripped the chair’s carved back.

“I cannot release her.”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Allandra looked up.

Lia’s expression was grave. “Majesty, she is the illegitimate daughter of the King of Lyehira and, from what you say, a powerful mage. If she leaves this palace unprotected and is captured, she is returned to the danger she escaped. If she leaves under your protection and that protection is discovered, it becomes policy. If she remains hidden, she is still a secret with a pulse.”

“A matter of state,” Allandra said bitterly.

“Yes.”

The phrase had teeth. It sank them into every soft thing and dragged it into the light.

“And yet,” Lia said, “this is not why you called me.”

Allandra’s grip tightened.

“I told you why.”

“You told me what is true. Not what is wrong.”

Allandra said nothing.

Lia’s voice gentled, though not enough to comfort. “Do you feel calmer near her?”

The question struck so cleanly Allandra could not prepare a lie.

Her silence answered.

Lia’s eyes lowered to the light-thread still looped around Allandra’s wrist. It had begun to glow again. Not brightly. Just enough.

“Do you become aware of her before you see her?” Lia asked. “Through a door, perhaps. In a corridor. A sense of where she is. Whether she is frightened. Whether she is hurt.”

“No.”

Lia waited.

Allandra looked at the thread.

It warmed against her skin.

“Yes,” she said, barely audible.

Lia closed her eyes for half a breath.

Allandra’s heart began to beat harder.

“What?”

“Have you felt the urge to protect her beyond reason?”

“She is in my custody. Her safety is my responsibility.”

“Beyond reason,” Lia repeated.

Allandra’s mind supplied Serali’s wrists in iron. The fury she had felt at bruises left by her own orders. The revulsion at the thought of councilors turning Serali’s name over like a coin.

Then: Serali in bed, dark hair loose over clean linen.

Beautiful.

Allandra pushed to her feet so abruptly the chair scraped back.

“No.”

Lia’s face changed.

Pity, this time.

Allandra could have borne anything else.

“Do not,” she said.

“Majesty—”

“Do not look at me as if I am some girl with a ribbon around her wrist and no sense in her head.”

“I would never.”

“I loved my husband.”

“I know.”

The answer was immediate. Firm.

It should have helped.

It did not.

“Finnian was good. He was gentle. He was mine.”

“Yes.”

“He died because of her father.”

“Yes.”

“And now you are going to tell me that fate, in its wisdom, has handed me Vulmar’s daughter and called it a gift?”

Lia’s silence was worse than confirmation.

Allandra laughed once. It sounded nothing like laughter.

“No.”

“I have seen this before,” Lia said.

Allandra’s voice was cold. “Fated mates are tavern stories.”

“Now, perhaps.”

“Convenient excuses for lust and bad judgment.”

“Often.”

“Then this is that.”

“No.”

The word was quiet, but it cut.

Lia came closer. Not too close. She had always known the correct distance from a cornered animal.

“The old bonds were never as simple as songs made them,” she said. “They are not commands. They are not virtue. They do not promise happiness, and they do not repair harm. They are recognition. Nothing more.”

Allandra’s mouth had gone dry.

“Recognition of what?”

“Of a soul your magic knows before your mind permits it.”

Allandra shut her eyes.

The room seemed to tilt.

“She is my prisoner,” she said.

“Yes.”

“I interrogated her.”

“Yes.”

“I threatened her.”

“Yes.”

“I put her in darkness.”

Lia’s expression tightened. “Yes.”

Allandra’s composure cracked.

Only enough that her breath came too hard, too fast.

“She is afraid of the dark,” she said. “A Night Fae afraid of the dark. I used it because I thought—” She stopped. There was no sentence that made it better. “I thought it was pressure. Humane, compared to what I could have done.”

Lia said nothing.

“I did not know.”

“No,” Lia said. “But now you do.”

That, too, was a blade.

Allandra sank into the chair.

For a while, the only sound was the sea wind at the glass.

“What am I supposed to do?”

It was not a queen’s question. That was why it hurt.

Lia sat across from her again.

“First? Nothing irreversible.”

Allandra gave a hollow smile. “That is what Daravan said.”

“Then he is not entirely decorative.”

The smile faded.

“Second,” Lia continued, “you remember that the bond does not make her yours.”

Allandra looked up.

Lia held her gaze. “Not by right. Not by destiny. Not by suffering. Not by need. If she is your mate, she remains a person before she is anything else.”

“I know that.”

“Do you?”

Allandra flinched.

Lia’s voice softened. “You are used to keeping what Avalusia cannot afford to lose.”

Everly. The Mantle. The throne. The border. Her own grief, sealed away because the kingdom had needed a queen more than a widow.

And now Serali.

Allandra covered her eyes with one hand.

“I cannot let her go.”

“I know.”

“She will think that is ownership.”

“It may be, if you make it so.”

Allandra lowered her hand.

Lia leaned forward slightly. “You cannot change what she is. You cannot change what you have done. But you can decide what kind of cage this becomes while you find a way out of it.”

“There may not be a way out.”

“There is always a way. Sometimes all of them are ugly.”

Allandra looked toward the window.

“What if she feels it?” she asked, before she could stop herself.

Lia’s eyes gentled.

“She may.”

“And if she does not?”

“Then you endure that.”

Allandra almost laughed.

“And if she does?”

“Then you endure that too.”

Lia’s voice was very quiet now. “A bond felt in chains is a dangerous thing. For both of you.”

The warning settled between them.

Allandra understood it at once. Wanted, unwilling, drawn, dependent, afraid, every future was a knife unless handled with care.

“She must not know,” Allandra said.

Lia’s brows lifted. “That is your first instinct?”

“Yes.”

“To conceal the truth from a woman whose life has been shaped by people deciding what truths she was permitted to survive?”

Allandra closed her mouth.

Lia stood, gathering her instruments with brisk, merciless efficiency.

“I am not telling you to run to her room and announce destiny at her bedside,” she said. “That would be foolish, and you are only intermittently foolish. But do not confuse silence with protection. Secrets rot if kept too warm.”

Allandra rubbed at the bridge of her nose. “You are enjoying this.”

“I am too old to enjoy disaster. I prefer it orderly.”

Despite everything, Allandra let out a breath that was almost amusement.

Lia capped the last vial and closed her case.

“Will it get worse?” Allandra asked.

Lia paused at the door.

“The longer you deny it? Yes. Not because the bond is punishing you. Because you will be fighting yourself, and you have always been your most stubborn opponent.”

That was unfair enough to be true.

Lia bowed, not deeply. “Sleep, if you can. Eat, even if you cannot. And do not visit her tonight.”

Allandra looked up sharply.

Lia’s mouth twitched. “Yes. That is what I thought.”

“I was not going to.”

“Of course.”

The healer opened the door.

“Lia.”

She stopped.

“You will tell no one.”

Lia’s face sobered.

“No one,” Allandra said. “Not Daravan. Not the council. Not Everly. Not her.”

Lia studied her for a long moment.

Then she inclined her head. “I will tell no one.”

The relief should have helped more than it did.

“But Majesty?”

Allandra waited.

“You did not summon me because you wanted permission to feel this.”

Allandra’s fingers curled.

“You summoned me because you wanted proof you could make it stop.”

The room went very still.

Lia’s voice softened, almost kindly.

“You cannot.”

Then she left.
