The Queen's Mage

They rode with the knowledge that every hour gained was something stolen, not earned. The road was a frozen artery through the ancient pine. The black-barked trees pressed in from either side, crowding the road, their needles so dense the light was nothing more than a bruised suggestion above.

Khalen had set a punishing pace. He rode ahead, shoulders hunched against the wind, eyes darting from the track to the treeline and back. He did not look at Serali unless it was necessary. She followed with her jaw locked, thighs screaming, every bounce and jolt lancing new agony through the raw weals Vandra’s whip had left on her back. She’d lost track of time, not in hours or days, but in the number of times she’d felt sure she was about to fall and did not, the number of times she’d checked over her shoulder and found nothing but the echo of hoofbeats and her own shallow breath.

They’d spoken very little. The first day, Khalen told her the plan: keep to the old trade roads, make for the border, cross at the watchtower ruins before anyone had time to set a real blockade. If caught, do not beg. If captured, do not speak her name. At dusk he’d grunted a single word—“Rest”—and Serali had thrown herself down in a ditch and let exhaustion take her.

Since then, nothing but riding. She found herself hating the silence between them almost as much as she hated the way her mind replayed old humiliations, or the way her body seemed to hold pain as a kind of proof that she was still here, still herself.

The first sign of pursuit came on the second morning: a distant caw, not quite a crow, that repeated every ten minutes, always at a different angle, never close enough to see. Khalen heard it, too, but said nothing; he only checked the sword strapped to his saddle with a new, mechanical frequency. Serali’s heart pounded harder each time, but she refused to let it show.

By nightfall the signs became impossible to ignore. A pair of black-clad figures far behind, barely visible between the trunks but perfectly still whenever she looked. A flicker of torchlight at a bend in the road, gone before she could point it out. Khalen’s eyes narrowed each time. He pressed them harder, riding at a speed that was less about hope and more about wringing every possible mile from the battered horses before the end.

On the fourth day, the air changed. The pines receded, giving way to low, bramble-choked ground. The soil here was riddled with ancient stone, the ruins of old border posts and signal towers long since abandoned to wolves and root. The border with Avalusia was marked only by a tangle of white birch and a crumbling wall that served as a warning rather than a boundary. The wind was stronger here, the cold edged with salt and something alive, something that did not belong to Lyehira.

Khalen slowed as they crested a rise. Ahead, the road widened to a clearing where the stone watchtower leaned in its collapse, the top half sheared clean by some forgotten war. Below, a clutch of ruined outbuildings slouched together for warmth, their roofs caved in, walls sprouting with black moss. Beyond it, the woods thinned, and in the low places, she saw the faint blue shimmer of distant water, the first promise of escape.

They paused at the top of the rise, horses panting, flanks heaving steam. Khalen scanned the treeline with an intensity that left no doubt: if anyone waited, it would be here.

Serali’s hands were numb on the reins. She tried to flex her fingers, but the movement sent a jag of fire up her arm to her bad shoulder. She blinked away the pain, focused on the watchtower. She felt the pull of it, the way it seemed to promise either freedom or death, nothing in between.

Khalen slid off his horse with the wary grace of a man who’d been ambushed before and did not intend to repeat the experience. He motioned for silence, then moved toward the road’s edge, crouching low to the brush. Serali stayed mounted, less because she expected to be useful and more because she was not sure she could dismount without collapsing.

They waited. Her breath rattled in her chest. She counted off the seconds, certain that the next one would be the last.

Then it happened. A voice, smooth as oiled wood, called from the shadows behind the old border wall:

“That’s far enough.”

Khalen spun, sword out, but did not advance. Serali’s horse shied, nearly losing its footing, and she clung to its mane with both hands.

Six figures emerged from the trees, dark coats blending with the trunks. Two had crossbows leveled; the rest carried blades, some curved, some straight, all polished to a mirror’s edge. The one in front was a woman, taller than the rest, her hair braided in the severe style favored by the Queen’s personal guard.

She smiled without warmth. “Surrender the girl. I’ll make it fast.”

Khalen said nothing, but his stance shifted. He planted himself between Serali and the crossbow line, chin tucked. For a moment, nobody moved.

Then the woman spoke again, sharper: “You’re not taking her over that border. Not alive.”

Serali’s horse bucked again, this time with real panic, and she nearly lost her seat. One of the men closed in fast, grabbing for the reins. The movement was practiced, precise, a routine built from a hundred hunts just like this.

She met the man’s eyes, and saw not hatred but the blank resolve of a professional. There was no point in arguing, no words that would sway them. The only thing left was to act.

Khalen raised his sword, blade glimmering in the thin, gray light.

The leader signaled, and two crossbow bolts snapped the air, hissing past Khalen’s shoulder. The first missed; the second sliced a line across his upper arm, spraying blood. He didn’t flinch, only set his jaw and advanced, one slow step at a time.

The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

The rest of the agents moved in a coordinated arc, herding Khalen and Serali back toward the ruined tower, careful not to crowd their prey. Serali felt the noose tighten and realized, with a cold clarity, that there would be no surrender. There never had been.

She glanced at Khalen, who caught her look, and in that instant she saw exactly what he expected: survive as long as you can, and if you cannot, make them pay for every inch.

Serali let go of the reins.

The man closest to her reached for her arm. She twisted away, adrenaline burning away the cold and the fatigue, and fell hard to the frozen ground. Her leg buckled and she landed awkwardly, but she kept her feet, staggering backward toward the low stone wall that circled the tower.

Khalen bought her a few seconds, swinging the sword in a wide, defensive arc. The nearest agent drew a baton from his belt and parried with brutal economy, metal on metal ringing out like a bell. Khalen’s lip curled in a snarl, he wasn’t the best swordsman in Lyehira, but he’d survived more fights than most.

The woman with the braid circled, eyes on Serali. She advanced with a deliberate, predatory calm, crossbow still aimed at Serali’s heart.

“I said surrender,” the woman called. “Don’t make me shoot you.”

Serali, chest heaving, found herself laughing; a wet, cracked sound she hadn’t expected. “You won’t get the bounty if I’m dead. Or do you think the Queen pays for broken things?”

The woman smiled. “I don’t mind a little damage.”

Khalen took a step back, sword raised. “Don’t touch her.”

The woman turned her attention to him, and at that moment Serali acted, not from training, but from instinct, from the raw, animal memory of every time she’d been cornered and survived.

She grabbed a fist-sized rock from the ground and hurled it at the woman. The shot went wide, but it forced the crossbow up, and the bolt flew harmlessly overhead. The woman cursed and reloaded.

Khalen used the distraction to close the distance, blade flashing. He got inside the reach of the baton and brought the sword down, carving a gash in the agent’s forearm. The man stumbled but did not drop his weapon. The two circled, locked in a tight, ugly duel.

The other four agents fanned out, two covering the standoff, two moving to flank. One fired a crossbow at Serali’s feet, spattering mud. The other advanced, dagger in hand.

Serali looked for anything, anything at all she could use. Her hands were empty, her body spent. Her only advantage was that nobody expected anything from her, not here, not now, not ever.

She focused, the way Cillian had drilled her. Not on the pain, not on the cold, but on the dense, silent dark that coiled just beneath the surface of her skin. She imagined the threads, the lines of force, the way he’d shown her: gather, shape, release.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the air around her shifted. A faint, blue shadow rippled out from her hands, growing brighter with each heartbeat. The closest agent saw it and hesitated, a flicker of something like fear in his eyes.

There was no thunder. No blinding flash. Just a sensation, at first, a raw, hungry pressure that raced up Serali’s arms and threatened to shatter the bones from the inside out. She flung her hands outward, and the shadow magic leapt.

It caught the nearest agent square in the chest. One moment, he was reaching for her throat; the next, he was tumbling backward, arms pinwheeling, the crossbow spinning into the trees. He hit the ground ten feet away.

A second agent loosed a bolt in reflex, but the shot went wide. Serali felt the spike of energy surge again, this time less controlled; a lashing, whip-like arc that seared the air and sent the shooter sprawling, weapon clattering to the ice. The magic left a trail of blue fire on her retinas, burning in afterimages.

She staggered back, breath ragged. Her hands shook uncontrollably. The agents hesitated, regrouped, but did not falter; they circled her with the slow, deadly patience of wolves who’d already tasted blood.

The woman with the braid was on her instantly. She ducked under Serali’s next wild strike, grabbed her wrist, and twisted. Pain shot through Serali’s shoulder, but she refused to go down. She let the pain anchor her, turned into it, and slammed her forehead into the woman’s face.

There was a satisfying crunch, a curse, and Serali was free. The world swam; she blinked away the red haze and saw, distantly, Khalen locked in brutal combat with two agents. His sword work was ugly but effective; no flourishes, just rapid, measured cuts designed to maim or kill. He dispatched one with a throat-stab, then pivoted, blocking a downward strike with the hilt before running the second man through.

Serali’s own fight was far less elegant. Another agent closed, swinging a weighted baton at her knees. She brought up both hands, and the shadow magic surged again, this time a blunt, concussive wave that sent the agent flying backward. It also knocked her to her knees, the recoil leaving her momentarily deaf. She blinked and saw the woman with the braid circling, blood streaming from her nose, eyes narrowed to slits.

“Don’t bother,” the woman spat, voice thick. “You’re not trained. You’ll burn yourself out in a minute.”

Serali grinned, mouth full of blood. “That’s all I need.”

The woman lunged, knife drawn. Serali tried to throw another blast, but the magic sputtered, drained by the effort. The knife caught her on the forearm, slicing a neat, shallow line. It hurt, but not as much as she’d expected. She let the pain center her, and when the woman overcommitted, Serali used the weight against her, she rolled, caught the woman’s wrist, and sent a last pulse of energy down her arm.

It wasn’t strong. But it was enough.

The woman convulsed, dropping the knife. Serali seized it, reversed the grip, and drove the blade up under the ribs. She twisted, just as Khalen had taught her. The woman shuddered once, went limp.

Silence. The kind that was too sudden to be real.

Serali staggered to her feet, vision tunneling. The road was littered with bodies; three dead, two writhing, one crawling toward a dropped crossbow. Khalen moved through the aftermath without a word. She looked away before he reached the first of them. There were sounds. Then there weren’t. When she turned back, he was wiping the sword on his coat, a deep gash on his neck leaking blood down his chest, his expression unchanged.

“You alright?” he asked.

She managed a nod. Her hands still glowed faintly, the veins pulsing with residual magic. Her knuckles were bone-white, every muscle shaking with spent adrenaline.

Khalen crossed to her, picked up the knife, and tossed it away. He took her by the upper arm, steadying her as her knees threatened to buckle.

“Let’s move.”

She looked at the carnage, unable to reconcile the bodies with the blur of violence that had just happened. There was a strange, buzzing emptiness in her head, as if the magic had hollowed her out.

Khalen said nothing more. He led her back to the horses, which snorted and stamped, eyes rolling at the scent of blood.

Serali mounted awkwardly, her left arm stiff and slick with blood. She took the reins, felt her hands tremble, then gripped tighter. The horses moved at a slow, uneven pace, picking their way around the fallen.

When they were a safe distance from the clearing, Khalen spoke again, voice flat and even.

“You can dress that?”

Serali looked at her forearm. The cut was shallow, already beading with red, but it stung. She nodded. “Later.”

He accepted this, as if pain and blood were ordinary. In Lyehira, maybe they were.
