The Queen's Mage

They rode in silence until they reached the watchtower. Serali wanted to collapse, to sleep, to curl up in the mud and let the world pass by, but she did not.

Khalen dismounted first. He turned to her, expression as unreadable as ever.

“We’re out of Lyehira,” he said. “Rest. I’ll keep watch.”

Serali nodded, too tired to speak. She slid from the saddle, crumpled to her knees, and let the cold bite into her one more time. Her hands, still faintly glowing, pressed into the mud.

Above, the sky was the color of slate, streaked with dying light. The wind carried no voices, no pursuit, only the memory of what she’d done.

Serali wiped the blood from her arm, then her mouth. She looked back, just once, at the border behind her.

The watchtower was a hollowed shell, all the old wood burned away long ago, only the cold teeth of stone left to frame the sky. Khalen found what little shelter there was in the lee of the south wall, out of the wind, and gestured for Serali to sit. She obeyed, not because he was in charge, but because every cell in her body begged for stillness.

Khalen set to work immediately. He tore a strip from his sleeve and bound the slice across his neck. The blood oozed slow, dark and stubborn, but he cinched it tight and ignored the pain. He rolled his sleeve down again, as if the wound was nothing. Then, from inside his coat, he produced a small, corked vial. The liquid inside was thick, gold as a bee’s sting, and it shimmered in the dying light.

He held it out to her, eyes flat. “Now or never.”

Serali took the vial. It was heavier than she expected, warm even through the glass. She sniffed it; sharp, bitter, with a metallic aftertaste that stung her nose. She remembered what Cillian had told her, and what Khalen had said on the ride: this glamour would change her. It would mask her eyes, her skin, her blood. She would not look like herself, not even to herself.

She hesitated only a second, then uncorked it and downed the contents in one swallow.

The taste was a fist. It punched her throat, made her eyes water and her stomach clench. For a heartbeat, nothing happened, then her scalp prickled, a million pinpoints of heat racing along her skull. Her skin tingled, burned, then settled into a low, constant itch. Her teeth ached. She doubled over, breath rasping, hands clenched so tight her nails gouged her own palms.

The sensation ebbed as quickly as it came. She sat up, sweating and dazed, her heart hammering. The world looked the same, but when she glanced at her hands, she saw that they were a shade warmer. Less ivory, more sun-touched. A strand of hair fell in front of her eyes. It was brown, not black.

She touched her face, her arms, half-expecting to find someone else’s bones beneath her skin. But it was still her. Only changed.

Khalen watched with clinical detachment. When the worst of it passed, he handed her a scrap of polished metal, a makeshift mirror. Serali studied her reflection: the hair, a dull chestnut; the eyes, no longer violet, but an indistinct brown-green, the color of river silt. Her cheekbones were the same, but softer, blunted by the new skin tone.

She looked up at Khalen, waiting for his verdict.

He nodded. “Good enough. Just don’t talk too much.”

She smirked, the expression feeling alien on her new face. “Don’t worry. I’m not here to make friends.”

He handed her the next item, a leather pouch, heavy with silver. “You’ll need this for the road.”

She tucked it inside her coat.

Last, he produced a folded map. It was stiff with oil and old sweat, the creases threatening to split. He opened it, jabbed a finger at a point marked in faded blue: “Myrae. South, then east. You’ll keep to the river as much as possible, then skirt the foothills. Once you hit the city, find a ship. Don’t stop, don’t draw attention.”

Serali traced the route with her finger, committing it to memory.

Khalen watched her, then said, “Don’t use magic. Not unless you want that glamour to burn off.”

She nodded, still staring at the map. “And if someone recognizes me?”

He shrugged. “Stab first.”

It was the closest thing to a joke she’d ever heard from him since they left. She almost smiled.

He repacked his own gear, checked the horizon, and finally allowed himself to relax, if only a fraction. He said nothing about the dead men, or the cost. That wasn’t his way.

Serali rolled the map, tucked it in her coat, and stood. The sky had gone a flat, uniform gray, the wind whipping the birch branches into nervous motion. She could feel the border beneath her feet, the divide between Lyehira and everything that came after.

She looked at Khalen, really looked, and saw in him a mirror: someone shaped by the place they’d left behind, never quite able to step out of its shadow.

“Will Cillian know I made it?” she asked, voice rougher than she meant.

Khalen’s jaw tightened. “He’ll know what he needs to.”

She let it go. There was nothing more to say.

He took her horse’s reins, mounted, and turned to the north. He didn’t look back, not even once, as he rode into the forest. Within minutes, the trees had swallowed him.

Serali stood alone in the shadow of the watchtower. The dagger rested at her hip, the pouch of coins pressed tight in her fist. She unrolled the map, studied it again, then folded it with care and slipped it inside her jacket.

The silence felt different, not oppressive, but expectant, as if the world was waiting to see what she would do.

She did not hesitate. She took the road south, away from the ruins, away from everything she’d ever known, and into the future she would carve out for herself.

Chapter 9: A Stranger in the Sun

Serali walked fast, each step a stiff rebuke to the long ride and the uglier run before it. The travel cloak was a size too big, sleeves rolled and pinned at the wrist, and beneath it, Khalen’s dagger pressed a dull reminder into her ribs with every stride. Her own hands were numb, the right one still stained at the knuckles from the watchtower fight, a thin crust of dried blood dark under the new skin. She flexed her fingers, feeling the old magic thrumming at the base of her palm, a warning, or a threat, she wasn’t sure which.

The land changed faster than she expected. After an hour, the frost softened, the trees retreated, and the road flattened into a ribbon of hard-packed clay that cut through a landscape almost obscene in its orderliness. Fields unrolled to either side, the earth turned over and clean, lines of wheat stubble running parallel to hedgerows clipped so precise it hurt her teeth to look at them. A flock of sheep drifted in one field, moving as a single, shaggy organism; in another, a pair of oxen pulled a plow so straight it seemed the dirt itself had agreed to its subjugation.

She kept to the center of the road, shoulders hunched, head down, every muscle braced for some echo of pursuit; a distant hoofbeat, a stray crossbow quarrel from the tree line. But there was nothing. Just the slap of her boots and the high, glassy whistle of wind over open ground.

A mile on, the first signs of habitation appeared: smoke rising in vertical threads from a cluster of thatched roofs, the occasional bark of a dog echoing across the fields. She eyed the houses with suspicion, but no one emerged; only a handful of children, cheeks streaked with dirt, watched her pass from behind a drift of nettle that served as a fence. When she looked at them, they ducked away, scattering like quail.

Serali pressed south, the road widening into a stretch of rough cobble. The glamour held: every time she caught her reflection in the oily puddles by the roadside, the face that looked back was an Avalusian nothing; a dull smudge of brown hair, skin gone sallow, eyes a muddy, forgettable hazel. Even so, she felt watched. Every house, every patch of unharvested fruit, every empty window. The feeling itched under her skin.

Past noon, the world grew warmer. The wind shifted, carrying the faint, yeasty breath of fermenting apple. She passed orchards gone feral with yellow fruit, the ground beneath littered with wasps and wild dogs fighting for the leavings. A woman in a patched blue dress scolded a boy from her doorway, her voice sharp and urgent in Avalusian.

Serali understood most of it, though not quickly. The words had to cross a distance before they became meaning. Too many years of Naeric orders and palace silence had left her Solvari rusty around the edges, a childhood knife dulled from disuse. The woman was telling the boy to get away from the road, to leave the chickens alone, to come inside before strangers saw him.

The boy ran, scattering chickens in his wake. The woman’s eyes cut to Serali. For one second, Serali wondered whether she should say something a greeting, an apology, proof that she understood enough to be harmless.

The right words came too slowly.

The woman narrowed her eyes and snapped the door shut.

By midafternoon, she’d covered nearly twelve miles. Her legs screamed. The skin beneath her cloak was raw, the old whip scars gone from scabbed to oozing with the friction of every step. She ignored it, or tried. What hurt more was the hunger. She hadn’t eaten since before the fight at the border, and now every smell; smoke, bread, even the brine of her own sweat, made her jaw ache. She forced herself to chew a scrap of salted root from her satchel, tongue gone numb from the bitterness, then spat it out when it turned to glue in her mouth.

She barely saw the men until it was too late.

Three of them, standing in the road just past a gap in the hedge, faces hooded in the blue-gray shawls of itinerant harvesters. The tallest, gap-toothed and hollow-eyed, wore a knife at his belt and a battered short-sword that looked more like a farming tool than a weapon. The second man was older, his hands stained with berry juice and bandaged at the knuckles. The third hung back, lounging in the ditch as if bored by the whole affair.

Serali clocked all this in a heartbeat. She slowed, then stopped, every sense ratcheting up to the kind of cold awareness that came only in the seconds before things went wrong.

The tallest man stepped forward. He did not draw his weapon or raise his voice. He only extended his palm, open and expectant, as if demanding tribute from the road itself. His gaze flicked over her cloak, then to the boots, then lingered for a fraction of a second on her hands.

She considered: If she used magic, the glamour would burn away in a breath. She’d have her old face back, and her odds would be no better. Worse, maybe. She scanned the men again. None of them moved for the ditch where her footprints might be visible. None tried to flank her. They stood patient, like they’d done this before and never once failed.

Serali reached for the coin purse at her belt, weighing it in her hand. It was the only thing that betrayed her; too heavy for a real farm girl, the drawstring too fine. She thought about making a show of negotiation, or a plea, but she saw in their faces the same thing she saw in the palace guards: not cruelty, just certainty. This was a job, not a passion.

She tossed the purse underhand, aiming for the open palm. The man caught it, weighed it, and nodded. He jerked his head toward the south, and just like that, she was allowed to keep walking.

The three men vanished back into the hedge. Serali felt the heat rise in her cheeks, a sick, curdled shame that burned hotter than any magic. She checked her pockets, still had the map, still had the dagger, the last of the vial wedged between two scraps of cloth. She breathed out, slow and hard.

She walked on, every step a little lighter, every sense sharpened to the possibility of more loss ahead. The sun had finally forced its way through the clouds, gilding the road and the fields in a light so bright it felt almost mocking.

Myrae was three days away, if she didn’t stop.

She did not stop.
