The Queen's Mage

There were three ways to earn coin in Myrae if you were new, alone, and too smart to sign on as a whore or a thief. Serali took the first one that came: the docks, where the hours were endless, the labor ugly, and no one cared what name you answered to.

She learned the rhythm of the port in a single night. The day started before dawn, when the brine-crusted fishers returned with their half-frozen cargo. A bell on the north quay rang out the hour, and then it was a sprint to drag the slopping barrels up the steps before the city sun melted the catch and made it worthless. The men who did this work were slabs of meat, shoulders grown out of proportion to the rest of them, arms mottled with old burns and rope scars. The women wore trousers and wool caps and cursed twice as foul as the men. Serali outworked most of them. She kept her mouth shut, her gaze fixed a pace in front of her boots, and lifted until her palms blistered and then split, until the thick air in the fish house stung her raw skin and forced tears from her eyes.

Nobody asked where she was from. Nobody cared. At the end of every shift, she washed in the communal basin outside the ice shed, the water so cold it burned, then pocketed her coins and vanished before anyone could try to talk her into a drink or a dice game or a midnight job. The glamour was holding, but she knew from the way the foreman’s eyes followed her that it wouldn’t last if she let herself be memorable.

She quit on a Tuesday, a week after a new shift boss came on and started timing their runs with a sandglass, rewarding the fastest with a double ration of bread and docking the slowest half their pay. Serali stayed in the middle, never first, never last, but she saw how the men started eyeing her, how the talk changed when she bent to lift, how the jokes got more pointed, the hands more careless on the barrels. She saw the trap being set and left at sunset, never returned for the next morning’s bell.

The warehouse job was better, at first. The air was dry, cool, and full of the earthy dust that came from shipments of grain and dried beans. The foreman was a woman, short and hard and uninterested in anything but getting the crates stacked and catalogued before the city inspector came around. The crew was three old men and a boy barely twelve, all with the look of people who’d failed at more important things. Serali learned the routine in an hour: every crate was marked with a painted sigil, every sack was weighed twice and the numbers entered in a leather-bound log. She kept her head down, copied the numbers as she was shown, and spoke only when asked a direct question.

For a week, nothing happened. Then, late one evening, one of the old men caught her staring at a crate with the Xuiven mark, her father’s sigil, black and stylized, the twin wings curling back on themselves. He made a joke about her eyes, how they had a trick of catching the lamp light, then winked and went back to work. But the next morning, the woman in charge asked Serali to stay after, alone, to help “with the paperwork.” Serali’s blood chilled. She made her excuses, then walked out and never looked back.

The Copper Eel was a last resort. She found it by following the smell; rank wine, boiled fat, and a chemical bitterness she couldn’t name. It was a low room, barely tall enough for a grown man to stand upright, lined with mismatched tables and chairs hacked together from old ship timbers. The patrons were mercenaries, smugglers, and the sort of dock rats who never made it out of the wharf alive. She asked the owner for work and was put on dish duty within the hour.

Her hands softened in the heat of the washing vat, skin wrinkling and then peeling in thin, white strips. The rest of her body ached, but not as much as it had on the dock. The kitchen was hot and loud, but nobody cared what she did as long as the plates came out clean and she didn’t break anything. The wages were half what she’d made before, but she could eat her fill from the leftovers and sleep in the dry space above the taproom, where a dozen girls like her snored on pallets or wrote letters to nowhere by candlelight.

Every night, before sleeping, Serali lit her own candle, a short nub she’d hoarded from the last place, and let it burn on the floor next to her blanket until it guttered out. She’d wake up shivering, convinced that Vandra or the Queen or some agent of the palace had found her, only to realize that it was just the soft sound of the other girls breathing, the whistle of the wind through the cracked roof tiles, the scuttle of a rat along the floor.

She saved every coin she made. In the mornings, she counted and recounted the stash hidden in the lining of her cloak, subtracting for the nights when she needed new shoes or a strip of dried meat or the rare, impossible treat of a tangerine at the market. She never spent money on herself unless the thing could keep her alive or invisible. She watched the city, learned its rhythms, found every shortcut and back way between the boarding house and the Eel.

She made no friends. When the girls in the sleeping loft invited her to share stories or songs, she claimed a bad throat or a headache and curled deeper into her blanket. She didn’t trust the soft look some of them gave her, or the way two of the older girls always waited until she’d passed on the stairs before whispering to each other. Men tried to flirt, sometimes; she responded with a look so flat and empty that they recoiled, or sometimes with a flash of the dagger at her hip, just visible enough to mean something. In time, people learned to leave her alone.

A month passed. The air grew colder, the city wetter, the days shorter and the nights infinitely longer. The glamour started to itch. Her skin, once luminous, now felt thick and grimy; her voice, once bright as a bell, had gone hoarse from the constant effort of speaking in a lower register. She was losing herself, a little more each day, and sometimes when she caught her reflection in a shop window or a polished spoon, she had to look twice to remember which face belonged to her.

One evening, as she finished scrubbing a week’s worth of burned pots, a regular at the Eel leaned too close to her at the counter. He was short, balding, with a nose like a bad joke and breath that reeked of anise and fish. He asked, in a friendly enough way, where she was from, and when she said “north,” he didn’t press. But his smile lingered, a little too curious, a little too familiar. She hated it.

That night, she sat on the windowsill of the sleeping loft and watched the fog creep in from the river, swallowing the city street by street. She could feel the pressure building, the sense that time was running out. She counted her coins again, did the math, and realized she was close. Two more days, maybe three, and she’d have enough for the ticket.

She did not sleep that night, or the next. On the third day, she walked to the harbor office, found the clerk with the ink-stained hands, and asked for passage. One-way, second class, no questions.

The clerk didn’t look up. He took her coins, licked his thumb, and pressed a sheet of cheap paper with a name and a date into her hand. “Be at the dock at dawn,” he said. “If you’re late, you’re not getting on.”

Serali thanked him, voice flat, and walked out into the afternoon.

She didn’t look back.

Chapter 11: The Festival of Warm Light

The night before she was due to leave Myrae, the city erupted into the kind of chaos that called itself celebration.

Every street, every stair, every terrace was a riot of voices and sound, as if the world knew to mark her last hours with noise enough to rattle the bones. The Harvest Festival had arrived: a final reckoning of sun and seed, of the season’s bounty and its slow, certain rot. Serali let herself be carried by the tide of bodies into the terraced market, the passage ticket a hard, angular certainty against her chest.

In Lyehira, harvest came earlier and leaner, wrested from cold soil before the frost could take back its claim. Even in the good years, no one trusted it. People counted sacks, salted what they could, dried what would not keep, and looked toward winter as if it were already standing in the doorway.

Avalusia harvested later.

A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.

Warmer. Later. Obscenely generous.

Here, the season lingered as if it had been invited to stay for wine. Fruit still hung heavy on branches when Lyehiran fields would have been stubble. Vines spilled over walls. Melons split under their own sweetness in the market carts. Apples piled in pyramids taller than children. Squash, figs, pears, peppers, bundles of herbs, sacks of golden grain; more food than Serali could look at without feeling something in her chest tighten.

No wonder they made a festival of it.

If Lyehirans had seen a harvest like this, they would have stored it under guard and posted archers at the granary.

Avalusians strung lanterns around it and invited musicians.

She walked with her head down, but it did nothing to save her from the onslaught of light. Every plaza was strung with lanterns, some as big as pumpkins, some small as coins, each a bubble of colored glass that threw shifting pools of amber and green over the pale plaster of the city’s buildings. The lanterns swayed in the warm wind, making shadows dance up and down the walls, turning every face into a moving mask.

Serali hated how easily the color got into her skin, how the green washed over her hands. She hated how the gold made her remember things she’d tried to cut out: the taste of orchard fruit in autumn, the soft glow of her mother’s smile before the dark came down.

She hated, most of all, that some of it was beautiful.

The upper market was the worst.

Food vendors lined the colonnades, yelling over each other for the chance to thrust a skewer or a roll or a wedge of candied melon at the passing crowd. The air was dense with the smoke of roasting fish, with the sweet, cloying perfume of spiced wine, with the sharp edge of garlic and the mellow drift of frying dough. Someone had set whole trays of sugared figs beneath a cloth awning. Another stall sold little cakes shaped like suns, dusted with cinnamon and crushed yellow petals. Children ran past with honey on their fingers and fruit juice on their chins.

So much food.

So little fear.

People ate as they walked, tearing off bites and tossing rinds to the dogs and the beggars and the gutters alike. Serali’s stomach lurched at the abundance, at the waste. In Naerith, a bruised pear could become a bargaining chip. Here, children threw sugared peel at one another and shrieked with laughter when it stuck.

Serali felt the old, bitter rage rising, the certainty that nothing this good could last.

Then a vendor pressed a sample into her hand.

“Festival luck,” the woman said in Solvari, too fast and too cheerful for Serali to refuse without making herself memorable.

It was a sliver of pear baked in pastry, glazed with something bright and sticky. Serali stared at it for one suspicious second.

Then she ate it.

The pastry flaked against her tongue. The pear was warm and soft and spiced with cardamom. Too sweet. Ridiculous. Wasteful.

Good.

Annoyingly good.

Serali swallowed and hated the vendor a little for proving the point.

A stall near the central fountain sold cones of spiced nuts, the paper still warm from the roaster. She bought one, counting out the coins with careful fingers, and found a patch of wall where she could watch the world with her back covered. She ate the nuts one by one, slowly, methodically, letting the heat and salt ground her in the moment.

The crowd was thickest here: a tangle of children darting underfoot, old men playing dice in the gutter, women in bright skirts dancing with anyone who dared step into the ring. A pair of musicians had set themselves up near the fountain, one plucking a long-necked lute while the other beat a quick rhythm on a little hand drum tucked beneath her elbow. The tune was too bright, too fast, all sunlight and clapping hands.

Serali told herself she was only watching to study the crowd.

Then one of the dancers spun too quickly, stumbled, and was caught by three laughing strangers before she could fall.

Serali’s mouth twitched before she could stop it.

She immediately looked away.

In the heart of the plaza, a Solveran storyteller had drawn a crowd. He wore a cloak lined with mirror-glass, each panel catching and refracting the light of the lanterns until he shimmered like a thing not quite real. His hands cupped a pool of magic, and from it, he shaped images that floated in the air: a ship, its sails full of fire; a woman with a crown of thorns; a beast with a hundred eyes and teeth like sickles.

The children shrieked and clapped and reached for the floating shapes, but the adults watched with a hunger Serali knew too well.

Story hunger.

The desire to be told that suffering had shape, that terror had meaning, that monsters could be named before they struck.

She lingered at the edge of the crowd, arms crossed. At first, she watched without really seeing. She was busy rehearsing every possible route to the docks for morning, every back alley and footbridge, every doorway that might hide a shadow with a grudge. The magic still itched under her skin, but she had learned to keep it on a short leash. Even now, in the noise and crush, she held herself so tightly she felt hollowed out.

Then the Solveran’s light-beast snapped at a boy’s hand and burst into a flock of tiny golden birds.

The boy screamed with delight.

One bird wheeled away from the rest and dissolved just above Serali’s shoulder in a rain of sparks no warmer than breath.

She did not smile.

Not fully.

But she did not leave either.

A girl about Kira’s age slipped through the crowd and stopped in front of her, staring openly. She was holding a glass figure, a tiny cat with eyes like drops of ink, and when Serali met her gaze, the girl grinned and said, “Do you want to pet her?” in the local dialect.

Serali’s Solvari caught up a second late.

She shook her head.

The girl pressed the figurine into her hand anyway, as if generosity were a game played by ambush, then darted away before Serali could return it.

The cat was impossibly smooth, its curves flawless. Its little arched back caught the lantern glow and held it, amber along the spine, green at the ears, blue in the tail. For a moment, Serali thought about dropping it, letting it shatter on the stones.

Instead, she slipped it into her pocket, next to the knife.

“Idiot,” she muttered, though she was not sure whether she meant the girl or herself.

The festival pressed on, the crowd swelling and shifting as the evening deepened. She bought a cup of watered cider because the smell reminded her of feral orchards and she wanted to prove memory could be bitten before it bit her. It was sharp, cool, and sweeter than anything had a right to be. She drank half, decided it was decadent nonsense, and drank the rest.

By then, the main plaza had grown too crowded for comfort. Too many elbows. Too many laughing mouths. Too many hands brushing past her satchel, her cloak, the hidden shape of her dagger. Serali made her way up the switchback stairs that led to the highest terrace, out of the main flow of people, where the air was cooler and the city spread itself out below her.

Here, the noise faded without vanishing. It became layered: the steady slap of waves against the harbor wall, the low thrum of drums from the lower squares, the clatter of cups, the bright rise of singing from a dozen private parties. She found a seat on the edge of a limestone planter, feet dangling over the drop, and let herself look, really look, at the city.

The harbor was a fever of light, every dock and pier jammed with ships and small boats. Lanterns hung from every mast, and the water itself was a mirror of flame and shadow, every ripple breaking the reflections into a thousand fragments. The ship she was to board in the morning, a low, ugly freighter with a hull stained black, floated among the others, its decks eerily quiet compared to the racket ashore.

Serali turned the passage ticket over in her hands.

The ink had bled through the cheap paper, and her name, the one she had bought for this journey, was already smudged. She wondered how long she could keep it, how many times she would have to become someone else before her old self was forgotten. She wondered what waited at the other end of the sea, whether it was worth the price, or if she would find the same hunger and violence in every city the world had to offer.

Below, someone struck a drum hard enough that the sound bounced up the terrace wall and into her bones.

A cheer followed.

Then laughter.

Serali closed her eyes.

For a second, she let herself imagine the future: no queen, no whips, no dark corridors or freezing wash basins. Just the sound of the sea, and the press of her own body, alive and moving forward.

The thought was so foreign it made her laugh, a short, hard sound, quickly swallowed by the wind.

When she opened her eyes again, the festival had not thinned so much as loosened. The first wild press of celebration had softened into wandering clusters. Families carried sleeping children against their shoulders. Musicians packed away instruments in one plaza while another tune started three streets below. Vendors shouted final prices over trays of cooling food.

Serali should have gone back to the boarding room.

She knew that.

The ticket was bought. The ship left at dawn. She needed sleep. She needed to stay invisible for one more night.

Instead, she found herself descending toward the lower market again, drawn by no sensible reason at all. Perhaps she wanted one last look. Perhaps she wanted another cone of nuts and the chance to hate them honestly this time. Perhaps the festival had slipped under her skin despite every effort to keep it out.

She told herself she was checking the route to the docks.

That was almost true.

The lower plaza was quieter now, but not empty. Lanterns burned low in their glass cups, casting softer pools of gold and green across the paving stones. The smell of wine had soured in the cooling air. Somewhere nearby, frying oil snapped and hissed as a vendor turned out the last of the dough cakes. A group of young men sang badly near a fountain while two women laughed at them from a balcony.

Serali moved along the edge of the square, one hand near her pocket where the little glass cat rested against her knife.

That was when she heard it.

Not a scream.

Not yet.
