The Queen's Mage

Serali woke to a hand over her mouth.

For one wild second, there was no Myrae.

No eastern guest room. No soft rug beside the bed. No puzzle box tucked beneath her pillow with a hairpin hidden in its hollow belly.

There was only darkness, a body beside the bed, and a hand forcing silence into her.

Serali moved before thought could catch up.

Her teeth snapped down.

The hand vanished.

She twisted, one arm already driving toward the shadow above her, the other reaching under the pillow for the puzzle box. Her fingers closed around the carved edge just as someone caught her wrist.

Not hard.

Not cruelly.

Precisely.

That was worse.

“Serali.”

Allandra.

The voice cut through panic like light beneath a door.

Serali froze.

The room returned in pieces.

Lamplight. Curtains. The chair near the hearth. The iron anklet cold against her skin. Allandra standing beside the bed in a dark coat, pale hair coming loose from its pins, one hand pulled protectively against her chest where Serali had bitten her.

Good.

Serali punched her with the other hand.

Not well. Not with full force. She was still half tangled in the coverlet, and Allandra saw it coming in time to turn her shoulder, so Serali’s fist struck the muscle below her collarbone instead of her face.

But it landed.

Allandra took the blow without complaint.

Serali scrambled back until her spine hit the carved headboard, puzzle box clenched in one fist, breath tearing in and out of her throat.

“Do not ever wake me like that.”

Allandra’s face was very pale.

“You are right.”

“I mean it.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.” Serali’s voice shook, which only made her angrier. “You think you know, and then you put your hand over my mouth in the dark like every other idiot with too much power and too little imagination.”

Allandra flinched.

Good.

“I am sorry,” she said.

Serali laughed once. It came out ugly. “How quick you are becoming at that.”

The door behind Allandra was closed.

Locked, probably.

Of course it was.

No guards entered.

No one shouted. No one demanded to know whether the queen had been harmed. No one dragged Serali from the bed for daring to strike royal flesh.

That, more than anything, made her stomach turn.

“You came alone,” she said.

“Yes.”

“In the middle of the night.”

“Yes.”

“With guards outside who will not come in even if I hit you.”

“The guards are Daravan’s,” Allandra said. “Trusted. Quiet. Under orders not to enter unless I call.”

“How comforting. Discreet jailers.”

Allandra looked at the bite mark rising near the base of her thumb. “I was afraid you would cry out.”

“I gathered that from the hand over my mouth.”

“It was fear,” Allandra said. “Mine. I acted from it. You paid for it. I am sorry.”

Serali had no immediate answer for that.

She hated honest apologies. They left less room to maneuver.

Only then did she notice the papers tucked under Allandra’s other arm.

A thick stack. Folded, marked, annotated. The edges worn as if they had been handled too much by people who had not slept enough.

Serali shifted her grip on the puzzle box. “Why are you here?”

“I needed to speak to you before the palace woke.”

“Because grown people speaking in daylight is illegal in Avalusia?”

“Because my visiting you alone is already dangerous. If the wrong person sees me enter your room at night and makes the right guess, the council will use it.”

“The right guess?”

The words sharpened themselves before she could stop them.

Allandra went very still.

Serali smiled. “What guess would that be, Your Majesty?”

The title struck.

Good.

Allandra looked down at the papers.

“Not one I will hand them,” she said.

That was not an answer.

It was better than one.

Serali hated that too.

She pushed the coverlet aside and stood. The anklet shifted against her skin, iron scraping softly enough that Allandra’s face changed.

Good.

Let her hear it.

“What did the council decide?” Serali asked.

“They have not decided.”

“Then you have come early.”

“I came because I need your decision before I bring mine to them.”

Serali stopped.

Decision.

Not sentence. Not confession. Not punishment for kissing the queen and then spending three days wondering whether the queen had vanished because of it.

Decision.

She distrusted the word immediately.

“What decision?”

Allandra did not sit. Did not ask to. She stood a full pace from the nearest chair, holding her papers like they might bite her.

Good.

Unauthorized usage: this tale is on Amazon without the author’s consent. Report any sightings.

Let them.

“We found an old court office,” Allandra said. “Obsolete, but not abolished. Royal Mage.”

Serali stared.

Then she laughed.

Not loudly. Not kindly.

“The what?”

“The Royal Mage.”

“That sounds like someone with a tower, a hat, and a very high opinion of their own handwriting.”

“It was once a formal crown appointment.”

“Was the hat required?”

“No.”

“Shame. That was the only promising part.”

Allandra’s expression did something small and tired and almost amused.

Serali looked away before she could want to see it again.

“Explain.”

“The office grants crown protection, residence within palace grounds, stipend, access to materials, and exemption from ordinary civic detention for acts preceding appointment.”

Serali went very still.

There it was.

Not the lace.

The hook.

“Exemption,” she said.

“Yes.”

“For the market.”

“Yes.”

“And residence within palace grounds.”

“Yes.”

“Under the crown.”

Allandra met her eyes. “Yes.”

Serali’s smile returned, colder this time. “You found a way to keep me and make it legal.”

Pain crossed Allandra’s face.

Good.

No.

Not good.

“I found a way to keep the council from taking you,” Allandra said.

“By taking me first.”

“No.”

“No?”

“No.”

“What is an oath to a crown if not a claim?”

Allandra looked down at the page.

“That,” she said, “is why I came before council.”

Serali’s anger stilled.

Not softened.

Stilled.

Allandra held out the papers but did not step closer. “This is not final.”

“Convenient.”

“It cannot be final without your consent.”

Serali stared at her.

The room seemed to narrow.

“My consent.”

“Yes.”

“To become your Royal Mage.”

“To accept provisional appointment under limited terms.”

“That is the same thing with more lace.”

“It may be. That is why I am here.”

Consent was a pretty word. Palace people liked pretty words. They put them on ugly things the way Rania had put jewels over bruises.

“What happens if I refuse?” Serali asked.

Allandra did not answer quickly enough.

There it was.

“If you refuse,” Allandra said, “I can hold the city off for a little while with crown review.”

“A little while.”

“Yes.”

“And after that?”

“The council will push for custody or charges.”

Serali glanced at the anklet. “How different.”

Allandra did not look away from the iron.

“Not different enough.”

The honesty struck sideways.

Serali hated when Allandra did that. Lies had handles. Truth made the room harder to cut.

“What would I have to swear?”

Allandra’s hand tightened around the papers.

“The old oath required magical obedience to the sovereign.”

The room went cold.

Not the air.

Serali.

“Obedience,” she said.

“I removed it.”

“No.”

Allandra went still.

“No,” Serali said again. “You do not get to say that word and then step past it.”

Allandra lowered the page. “You are right.”

Serali’s throat felt tight.

The iron around her ankle seemed heavier.

“The replacement is advisory,” Allandra said. “Foreign magic, wardcraft, palace security, defensive counsel. No command. No compelled spellcasting. No battlefield service unless you separately agree.”

“Separately agree while surrounded by people who want me chained?”

“Written before they see you.”

That mattered.

Damn her.

“What else?” Serali asked.

“A room that is not locked from the outside. Guarded at first, but not locked.”

Serali’s breath caught before she could stop it.

Allandra continued, “Lia. Mara, if she agrees. Books, writing materials, a stipend, limited magical supplies under supervision. No questioning without your agreement. No additional iron.”

Serali looked down.

The anklet waited, ugly and patient.

“Additional,” she said.

Allandra’s face changed.

There it was.

The bad part.

Good.

She preferred bad parts where she could see them.

“The anklet remains for now,” Allandra said.

“Of course it does.”

“I am not going to make it sound kind.”

“That would be new.”

Allandra took the blow.

“The council has not heard the proposal yet. If I remove every visible restraint before they do, they will use it against you.”

“So I remain ironed because it helps your argument.”

“Yes.”

Serali almost threw the puzzle box at her.

Allandra did not soften the word.

Did not excuse it.

Did not say because I hate it too, though her face said she wanted to.

Yes.

Serali hated that more than a lie.

“Then your argument is ugly.”

“Yes.”

“And so are you.”

Allandra inclined her head. “At the moment, yes.”

Serali turned away before wanting could do something idiotic with that answer.

The window was dark. Her reflection looked back: loose hair, sharp face, nightshift, iron anklet, puzzle box in hand like a child’s toy or a hidden knife.

Royal Mage.

A title. A room. A stipend. A door not locked from the outside.

No obedience.

No additional iron.

Not no iron.

“Daravan helped draft this?”

“Yes.”

“Does he know why you needed help?”

Allandra went still.

There.

The room sharpened.

Serali turned back slowly.

Allandra did not answer fast enough.

Serali laughed once, low and humorless. “Ah. You told him.”

“I needed help.”

“With the law?”

“Yes.”

“With your conscience?”

Allandra flinched.

Good.

“He asked whether it was mutual,” Allandra said. “I answered because the difference mattered.”

“To him?”

“To me.”

Serali’s grip on the puzzle box tightened.

“If your council learns, they will not ask whether it was mutual,” Serali said. “They will say I enchanted you.”

“I know.”

“They will call me Night Fae corruption wrapped around your throat.”

Allandra went pale.

“They will ask for iron,” Serali said. “More than this.”

Her ankle burned, or perhaps she only imagined it.

Allandra did not speak.

Good.

There was nothing comforting to say.

“Is that why you stayed away?”

Allandra’s mouth tightened.

Serali’s pulse jumped.

Allandra did not lie.

“Partly.”

“Partly.”

“I stayed away because coming to you without an answer would have been selfish.”

Serali laughed. “And coming with a crown-shaped leash is selfless?”

“No.”

The answer stopped her.

Allandra held her gaze. “No. It is not selfless. It is the best bad answer I have. I wanted one that gave you freedom. I found one that may keep you alive long enough to demand more of it.”

Serali’s throat hurt.

She turned back to the window.

“What happens if I accept,” Serali said slowly, “and later want to leave?”

Allandra looked down at the papers.

“The statute allows resignation from provisional office with sovereign consent.”

Serali laughed. “Of course it does.”

“I drafted a dissolution clause.”

“Read it.”

Allandra did.

Reasonable efforts appeared by the second sentence.

Serali turned back. “Reasonable efforts?”

Allandra crossed it out before Serali could say more.

Interesting.

Serali crossed the room.

Allandra held out the pen.

Their fingers did not touch.

Infuriating woman.

Serali bent over the desk and wrote beneath the revised clause, her handwriting sharper and more angular than Allandra’s elegant court script.

The Crown will not return the appointee to Lyehira or surrender her to any foreign claimant without her express consent.

Allandra read it.

Her face changed.

“Is that acceptable?” Serali asked.

“Yes.”

“No royal edits?”

“No.”

“No clever trap where foreign claimant means something decorative?”

“No.”

Serali searched her face.

Allandra met the look.

At last, Serali set the pen down.

“That clause stays.”

“It stays.”

“And I want one more.”

Allandra inclined her head.

Serali thought of Cillian. Of Kira. Of the mother whose fate she still did not know. Of names held like knives.

“My past is mine to disclose,” she said. “No one tells the council details I do not approve. No village. No mother. No brother. No father.”

Allandra’s face went still at the last word.

Then she nodded.

“Write it.”

Serali did.

Personal history disclosed in confidence to the Crown shall not be entered into public record, council testimony, diplomatic correspondence, or private briefing without the appointee’s consent.

Allandra read over her shoulder.

Too close.

Not touching. But close enough that Serali felt the warmth of her, the low pull of the bond answering like a thing waking under snow.

Serali did not move away.

Allandra did.

A half step. Careful. Always careful now.

Serali hated how much she appreciated it.

Then dawn touched the window, pale and thin.

Both of them looked toward it.

Time.

The room remembered itself.

Council. Guards. Iron. Papers. A title Serali had not asked for and might need anyway.

Allandra gathered the amended pages slowly. “I will not present this unless you agree.”

Serali looked down at the clauses she had written.

Her handwriting sat among the queen’s. Jagged, dark, undeniable.

A record.

A weapon.

A leash with a blade hidden in the braid.

She closed her eyes.

If she said no, Allandra would still fight. Serali believed that now, which was inconvenient and dangerous. But a fight without shape was a thing that could be lost in a hundred rooms before Serali ever saw the battlefield.

If she said yes, she walked into council as something other than prisoner.

Not free.

Not safe.

Not owned.

Maybe.

Serali opened her eyes.

“I agree to the proposal,” she said.

Allandra’s breath caught.

Serali pointed a finger at her before the queen could speak. “Do not look relieved. It makes me want to reconsider.”

Allandra’s mouth closed.

“I agree to hear it argued,” Serali said. “I agree to the title if the clauses stay. I agree to no oath until I have read every word myself. I agree to advisory service, not obedience. I agree that if anyone calls me an asset, I am allowed to throw something.”

Allandra looked at her.

“At council?” she asked.

“Especially at council.”

“I will see what can be arranged.”

Serali snorted despite herself.

Then the silence came back.

Allandra held the amended papers against her chest like they mattered.

They did matter.

That was the terrible thing.

Serali’s gaze dropped to Allandra’s bitten hand.

Then to her mouth.

Memory moved between them.

Allandra saw.

Of course she saw.

She did not move.

Good.

Cruel.

Serali looked away. “Go, then.”

Allandra bowed her head once. “I will return before council if anything changes.”

“If something changes, bring better news.”

“I will try.”

“Do not say that in council. It sounds weak.”

Allandra’s brows rose.

Serali waved a hand. “I was raised in a court. Badly, but still.”

At the door, Allandra paused.

“Serali.”

Serali braced herself.

Allandra looked back at her, dawn silvering the loose edges of her hair.

“I will not make it sound kind if it is not.”

The words hit in the quiet place where fear lived.

Serali swallowed.

“Good,” she said.

Allandra left.

The door closed.

The lock turned, because of course it did. Guards remained, because of course they did. Dawn came, because no one had ever successfully threatened the sun into waiting.

Serali stood alone in the center of the room with ink on her fingers and a title she had not yet accepted settling over her shoulders like an ill-fitted cloak.

Royal Mage.

She looked at Everly’s card on the table. At the dragon. At the crooked words.

I AM BETTER NOW.

Serali sank into the chair by the desk and laughed under her breath.

“Good for you,” she told the dragon. “Some of us are becoming legally complicated.”

The dragon did not look impressed.

Serali picked up the pen again, pulled a blank scrap of paper toward her, and began listing every question she intended to ask before she let anyone put a crown-shaped leash around her throat.

At the top, she wrote:

No obedience.

Then:

No more iron.

Then:

No father.

She paused.

The ink trembled slightly at the tip of the pen.

After a moment, she added:

No pretending this is mercy.

Then, because she was not a fool, because she was still Serali, because she was not done surviving, she reached for the puzzle box and checked that the hairpin was still there.

It was.

Good.
