The Queen's Mage

Serali dreamed of snow.

It pressed against the cottage walls and whispered through the seams of old timber, finding every crack, no matter how well her mother sealed them. In the dream, the world beyond was nothing but white, a silence so absolute it smothered even the memory of sound. She sat by the fire, her mother’s song curling around her head like a woolen cap. There was no palace. No Queen. No closet near the kitchens. Only warmth, and the slow, unhurried drift of morning.

The dream splintered on the third syllable of the song.

A hand clamped over her mouth, wrenching her back into the present: into stone-walled dark, the bitter taste of lye on her tongue, and the single guttering candle burning at her elbow. Serali jerked upright, fist swinging, but the hand was faster. It caught her wrist and pinned it to the rags beneath her.

Cillian’s face hovered inches from hers, colorless in the tallow light, sweat slicking the hair at his temples. His voice was a tremor.

“It’s me. Don’t scream.”

He loosened his hand from her mouth, then pressed both palms tight to her shoulders, as if afraid she might fly apart.

Serali blinked.

The room was exactly as she had left it: cleaning rags piled beneath her, a plank shelf above her head stacked with folded cloths, the bucket in the corner, the walls close enough that if she stretched one arm fully, her fingers brushed stone. The candle’s flame guttered, throwing her shadow against the wall in broken, monstrous double.

Somewhere in the corridor, a rat scuttled, then stilled.

The only new thing was Cillian, and the look in his eyes.

A look she had never seen before.

Not on him.

“What—” she started, but her voice snagged in her throat, thick with sleep and fear.

“Get up. Now.”

He spoke with a rapid, jagged edge she had never heard from him, not even the time the queen’s hounds treed them in the chapel ruins.

Serali looked up at him, question already hardening into dread.

He did not wait for her to ask.

“Rania knows.”

The words struck the last of sleep from her body.

Cillian was already reaching beneath the lowest shelf, dragging out the little satchel she kept hidden behind a loose stone. His hands shook as he shoved it toward her.

“The old woman from the laundry followed us to the hunting ground. She saw you.”

Serali’s fingers tightened around the satchel’s drawstring.

Saw.

Not guessed. Not suspected.

Saw.

The shadow spell. The way it had gathered in her palms. The way the darkness had answered her at last as something other than punishment.

“She told Rania everything?” Serali asked.

Cillian’s nod was barely visible. “Enough.”

Her stomach turned.

Rania had been waiting for something like this. Serali knew that with a certainty so complete it almost felt calm. The Queen had always hated her more when she looked useful. A bastard girl with Thelara’s blood was offensive enough. A bastard girl Cillian had taught in secret was an insult with a handle.

“She summoned you,” Serali said.

“Yes.”

The candle flame bent sideways, though there was no wind.

Serali made herself breathe.

Rania would have wanted Cillian punished.

Of course she would. The Queen would have savored it: Cillian standing in the receiving chamber, still damp from the ride back, Serali’s name between them like something dirty on the floor. She would have accused him of disobedience, of disloyalty, of wasting royal instruction on a kitchen mongrel.

“She meant to punish you,” Serali said.

Cillian’s face flickered.

Only once.

Enough.

“She did. And she called Father.”

Serali swallowed. “What did he do?”

This tale has been pilfered from NovelFire. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

Cillian looked toward the door, listening. The corridor beyond remained silent. “Not what she expected.”

That was worse.

“He asked questions,” Cillian said. “At first I thought he was bored. Then the laundry woman started talking.”

Serali’s body went cold.

“What did she say?”

“What she saw. That the shadows moved when you called them. That you shaped them without a circle. That you held the spell after I told you to stop.” His jaw tightened. “That the light went out around you.”

Serali remembered the darkness gathering, not like the rooms Rania locked her in, not like the root cellar, not like punishment, but like something listening.

Cillian continued, voice rough. “Rania kept trying to turn it back to me. She wanted him angry that I had taught you. She said I had made you insolent. Dangerous. Unnatural.”

Serali almost smiled. Almost. “Did you?”

“Yes,” Cillian said. “Unfortunately, not enough.”

The almost-smile died. “What did Vulmar say?”

Cillian looked at her.

And there it was again: the fear. “He asked how strong you were.”

Serali stared at him.

“He asked whether you needed spoken words. Whether you had used blood. Whether you had ever been tested properly. Whether Thelara had done magic like that when she was taken.” Cillian’s throat worked. “Rania realized too late that he was interested.”

Interested.

The word crawled over Serali’s skin.

Vulmar had never looked at her long enough for her to feel seen. He had measured her, dismissed her, filed her away somewhere between inconvenience and failed asset. For years, that had been one of the few mercies in the palace: the king’s disinterest.

Now the old laundry woman had handed him a use.

Serali looked down at the satchel in her lap.

The dream was gone now, fled to whatever gutter snowdrifts went when the thaw came.

“So?” she said, because fear wanted too much room and she would not give it all of her. “They’ve known I could do magic since I was eighteen. What’s new?”

Cillian set his jaw, the fine-boned face suddenly severe.

“They knew you had magic. They did not know what kind. They did not know how strong.”

“And now?”

“He is obsessed with the Xuiven dynasty losing power. You know that. Everyone knows that.” Cillian’s voice dropped. “Now that he knows what you can do, he means to claim you.”

Serali stared.

“Publicly,” he said. “Tonight, if he can.”

The room seemed to shrink around her.

The shelf. The bucket. The candle. Cillian’s hands gripping her satchel too tightly before he released it.

“To what end?” she asked, though some part of her already understood.

Cillian’s face twisted.

The flush that rose in his cheek made him look younger and more horrified than she had ever seen him. “To put you in his bed and get an heir.”

For a moment, there was no room. No candle. No breath.

Only the words.

Serali could not picture the king as anything but an absence: a cold force, a rumor of consequence, the shape of power in a room. Even so, the thought of him touching her made her stomach heave.

“That’s madness,” she whispered. “He’s still my father.” The word was sharp in her throat.

Cillian’s face changed. Not pity.

Worse.

Truth.

“He doesn’t care,” he said. “You know he doesn’t.”

And Serali did. But she had wanted him to lie.

She hated how small her voice sounded, how much she still clung to the idea of rules, even here at the end. Rules had never saved her, but some childish part of her still wanted them to exist somewhere. In blood, if nowhere else. In the word father, even if she had never used it for Vulmar without feeling ill.

“He told Rania it would make the bloodline stronger,” Cillian said. “More pure. He wants a Xuiven heir, and you’re the only one left who could give it to him.”

There it was.

No more disguises.

No more pretense.

The Xuiven King wanted his bastard, and he wanted her for the only thing the palace ever wanted from anyone: to feed its own survival.

Serali let out a huff of breath, half-laugh, half-animal growl. “And the Queen is fine with that? Her prize mongrel breeding with the king?”

Cillian’s hands found her wrists again. Not holding her down. Holding her there.

“He doesn’t need her to be fine with it. All he needs is you in his rooms before sunrise.”

She tried to think.

The candle wavered, throwing everything into strange relief: Cillian’s hair spiked with sweat, his shirt collar rumpled, the blood under his left eye where he had clearly run face-first into something solid. The world swam in and out.

Her mind leapt ahead.

The lower gate. The service corridors. The guards posted near the kitchens. The scullery tunnel they had mapped and never used because maps were safer than hope. Where would she go? How far could she get? Would Rania send hounds? Would Vulmar send mages?

She blinked again. “And you’re just now telling me.”

It was not a question.

It was a blade.

Cillian flinched as if she had struck him. “I only just learned. Please, Serali.” His voice dropped so low she almost missed it. “Please. I can’t—”

He stopped.

Whatever he could not do remained between them.

Let it happen.

Watch.

Fail her.

Become his father’s son in one more way.

Serali pulled away, wincing as her body reminded her of her earlier punishment. She ignored it and shifted to sit on the edge of the rags.

“How?”

He was already moving, hands shaking as he fished for her boots beneath the shelf. He shoved them into her lap.

“You go with me, now. We use the old scullery tunnel. Khalen has the postern gate unlocked, but only for a few minutes.”

“Khalen knows?”

“Yes.”

“And he is helping?”

“Yes.”

Serali stared at him.

Cillian’s mouth tightened. “He said I was an idiot for waiting this long.”

“He was right.”

“Yes.”

That should have made her feel better. It did not.

Serali yanked the boots on, hands working fast and automatic. She had done this a hundred times in her head, never believing it would matter. Each finger-flick, each crisscross of the laces, was a little act of muscle memory so old it could survive any panic.

The candle flame fluttered with every move, painting her shadow across the stone and making her twice as big, twice as fierce, as the body that filled her clothes.

Cillian watched, mouth a thin line.

She hesitated, just long enough to scan the room.

She had expected she might one day leave this place.

She had never expected to miss it.

Not the closet. Not the damp stone, not the rags, not the bucket or the shelf or the smell of lye sunk into the cracks.

But the candle.

The small flame Cillian had smuggled to her, night after night, so the dark would not have all of her.

That, she would miss.

“Ready?” Cillian whispered.

Serali nodded. Then she took the candle.

Cillian’s eyes flicked to it. “We need both hands.”

“I know.”

“The tunnels are narrow.”

“I know.”

“Serali—”

“I am not leaving it.”

He looked as if he wanted to argue. Then didn’t.

Good.

She cupped the candle carefully in one hand. The wax had guttered low. Hot tallow slid against her fingers, but she did not put it down. The room smelled of cold stone, old smoke, and the char of something too small to call hope.

At the door, she paused, looking once over her shoulder at the pile of rags and the little patch of shadow it had called its own.

For years, nothing in her life had belonged to her except her silence, her rage, the moments she chose not to spend them, and sometimes, when the palace slept and no one came to drag her into the dark, one small forbidden light.

She set her jaw.

Behind her, the shadow rose. Not punishment. Not fear. Hers.

“Let’s go,” she said.
