The Queen's Mage

Everly walked Serali through the game slowly: the elaborate social hierarchy of the assembled toys, the necessary taxonomy of horse personalities, the logic of alliances and rivalries, the punishment for lawbreakers (“You have to stay in the boot,” she explained, demonstrating with a hollow wooden clog repurposed as a jail). Serali did not correct her, nor did she attempt to contribute. She watched, mute, as Everly conducted a trial of the corked bottle for the crime of “spilling on the rug.” She observed the horse’s escape from the boot, and the subsequent pursuit by the carved boar, each event narrated at the relentless, musical pitch of a child too young to believe in interruption.

Everly was in the middle of explaining the entire life story of the boar when noise from the corridor sharpened, footsteps bunched together, then the unmistakable scrape of steel on stone. The handle of the locked door rattled, hard enough to splinter the wood. Everly straightened, pulling herself tall, as if to cover Serali with her shadow. There was a heartbeat of silence, then her mother’s voice, Allandra’s, filtered through the door, low and controlled but stripped of its deliberate calm.

“Everly. Answer me.”

Everly stared at the barricade, then at Serali. Exposed in the clean geometry of sunlight and rug, Serali looked less like a threat and more like a warning: what happens when a thing is cornered too long. Her eyes, rimmed red, flicked to Everly’s face, then to the door, then down at her hands, which she forced to stillness.

“Mama?” Everly called, voice high, but not frightened.

“Are you hurt?” The words rapid and raw.

Everly’s reply, quick and practiced, sounded nothing like the sobbing chaos a breath ago: “I’m fine, Mama. I’m just sitting with my new friend.” She eyed Serali, who had gathered herself enough to wipe her nose on the back of her hand and try to appear less like a dying animal.

On the other side, the world went very still, then erupted in the overlapping voices of guards and the sharp percussion of boots. Allandra’s orders cut through, sharp as a whip—“Stand down, gods damn you, she’s a child—” followed by a furious clatter as bodies jostled for primacy at the door. Serali, who had survived both palace coups and the meticulous cruelty of professional jailers, recognized the rhythm of imminent death.

The next words Allandra spoke were knife-sharp, every syllable cleaved from panic: “Step away from her. Now.”

The command hit like a thrown chain. Serali tensed, every battered nerve alight, and a reflex older than language made her shift in front of Everly, as if to shield the child from the inevitable.

She knew, with the slow, freezing certainty of a final moment, that she was going to die. The knowledge was unremarkable, she had always known this would be the shape of her end, but the immediacy struck her as almost comic, coming as it did in a room that smelled of beeswax and apple juice, in the company of a child whose touch still lingered at her shoulder.

For an instant, the world held its breath.

Allandra spoke from behind the door, her voice forged in the furnace of fear. “If you do anything—anything—to harm her, I will make you wish for the mercy of your own kind,” she said, and every syllable writhed with the weight of a thousand executions. “You will not die quickly. You will not die whole.” The threat spun itself into the air and hung, as if it were unfinished, as if she would not allow the world to end on that note.

But the world did end on a note. It was not Allandra’s. It was Everly’s.

She leapt to her feet, chin at a warlike angle, and shouted at the door with a command that rang out with the full, vibrating confidence of royalty: “Stop scaring her, Mama! You’re making it worse!”

Silence, thick and animal, pooled in the chamber. Through the crack at the door’s base, the shifting shadows of boots and cloaks stilled, as if even the palace itself had taken a breath. Serali instinctively reached for the child’s sleeve, but Everly brushed her off, advanced two paces, and planted herself before the barricaded door.

She announced, “She isn’t going to hurt me. She’s my friend.” Everly’s voice was not a plea. It was an accusation. Serali, who had anticipated violence, not negotiation, found herself momentarily vacant—her mind, built for flight or fight, unable to process the possibility of a third option.

The world on the other side of the door scrambled, tripped over itself trying to find a response. Allandra’s voice, when it came at last, was pitched low and nearly trembling with the effort of control: “Everly. Tell me what’s happening. Are you all right?”

“I’m fine!” Everly snapped, her face a study in furious dignity. “But you’re making my friend cry, and that’s not very Queenly. You always say to be brave, but you’re being scary instead.”

From the other side, the noises of readiness; steel unsheathed, the muttered counting of the city’s best soldiers, Daravan’s voice crisp as a razor, faltered and receded, as if the entire retinue had been caught misbehaving by a schoolmaster. Serali watched the play of realization bloom and wither across the child’s features, the shift from rage to wounded pride to a brittle, unspoken hope.

Allandra, silent for a full breath, tried again. “Can you move?”

A momentary pause, as if the question had come from a great distance, or from inside a dream. Then Everly, proud, demonstrated: she stretched her hands out in front of her, wiggled all ten fingers, then made a little show of flexing her wrists and elbows, as if the matter of movement were a delicate performance with stakes higher than the city’s peace.

“I can move my fingers, my arms, my legs.” The last item was added with forensic gravity, as if she’d just performed a full inventory of herself and found everything in working order; Serali almost smiled at the way the child seemed to be offering proof of life not for herself, but for her mother.

“Good,” said Allandra, the word clipped but thick with relief. “Now, move your fingers, your arms, your legs, away from your friend.”

The request hung in the air, and Serali felt the world cinch tight around the room, every atom of dust and slant of sunbeam abruptly hostile, as if the whole world were bent on enforcing the Queen’s command. Serali’s body reacted before her mind did: she curled tighter, drawing her knees to her chest, trying to make herself small and unthreatening. But Everly, who had only just met her and had already, somehow, decided to champion her, looked at the door as if bracing for a siege.

“No,” Everly said. “You’re going to trick me.” She said this with the flat, transactional certainty of a child who has seen every adult sleight of hand and mastered them all. “If I move, you’ll come in and take her away, and then she’ll be gone like Papa was.” Her voice didn’t break, but Serali heard the spike of pain that shot through it, and, worse, the echo of memory in the way the words landed.

Allandra did not answer right away. She said, at last, “I am not tricking you, Everly. You have my word.” The words were measured, and in the brief standoff, Serali’s mind did the math: Sun Fae oaths, for all their legend, were so much scaffolding for the moment when steel and magic failed. She did not want to trust it. But Everly, for all her practice in the forms of deception, wanted nothing so much as to believe.

The little girl looked at the door, at Serali, and then, after an agony of indecision, knelt beside her, so that their faces nearly touched.

“You have to promise, Mama,” she said, and the words trembled only at the very end. “If I let you in, you won’t hurt her.”

“I promise Sunbeam, I won’t hurt her,” Allandra said it, the sacred promise, and Serali heard the silent “for now” that edged it like a knife.

A rustle on the other side of the door, the shuffle of feet, the soft warning of Daravan’s voice—“Majesty, let us handle it”—and then Allandra’s reply, flat and chill: “Stand down. No steel unless I command it.”

“Everly,” the queen called again, her voice composed but a note desperate beneath the veneer. “Are you near the door?”

“No, Mama!” Everly shouted. “I’m at the window. With her. She’s not moving.”

The words drew a ripple of movement from the corridor: the shuffling of boots, the unspoken calculation of risk and protocol. Serali felt every muscle in her body coil for the moment of breach, for the inevitable rush of bodies and blades. Instead, Allandra’s voice returned, softer, closer to the wood.

“Everly. Can you move away from her? Not to the door, just… to the other side of the room.”

Everly considered, and Serali saw the grown-up gravity of decision pass through her face. “I can, but I have to get my horse first,” Everly announced, and, without waiting for further permission, crossed the rug in three brisk steps. She collected the wooden horse from where it had toppled, its splinted leg catching the sun, and hugged it to her chest. Then she resumed her post at the window, body angled so she could still see Serali.

Serali leaned her head against the glass, breath fogging the pane, and said, so quiet only Everly could hear it, “You should look away.” She remembered, with the clarity of fever, how Kira’s face had looked when the guards came for her: the wide, indignant eyes peeking from inside the pantry. She didn’t want the child to make the same mistake.

“Why?” Everly asked, already suspicious.

“Because what happens next is going to be ugly,” Serali whispered, voice flat. “And I don’t want you to see it.”

Everly’s mouth worked, the lower lip caught between her teeth. She considered, and then she looked over her shoulder at the door, her gaze narrowing with the stubbornness of someone who had never once doubted the world would keep its promises to her. “It’s ok, Mama said she would not hurt you.” She turned back to Serali, fierce. “Mama always keeps her promises. Even when everyone else is lying.” Serali dug her chin into her knees.

Everly did not look away. She returned to Serali, knees planted in the rug, and fixed her with a gaze that was not forgiving, just impossibly, stupidly loyal.

“Lucky you,” she said, not meaning it as spite, but it came out that way. “Is it lucky?” Everly asked, as if she genuinely wanted to know.

Before Serali could answer, a fresh commotion arose from the corridor: a second set of boots, heavier and faster, followed by Daravan’s command—“Hold position!”—and then the cold, surgical clarity of Allandra’s voice, pressing through the door as if it were no obstacle at all. “Everly. Are you being threatened?”

Serali flinched, her mind instantly conjuring every way the answer could be twisted, how the language of power always turned the words of children into weapons. “No,” Everly said. “She’s scared. That’s all.”

There was a silence, then Allandra’s voice, brittle with effort: “If you’re hurt, say the word.”

“I’m not hurt,” Everly said, and repeated it, as if the repetition could shield Serali too.

Chapter 24: You Promised

Allandra, forced to trust what she could not see, weighed the options. She pressed her palm to the door, feeling for the old enchantments against heat and force. She could have waited, could have shouted down the child with more threats or more love, but there was no victory in hesitation. She gathered the sun-magic to her breastbone, not the brittle flicker of the court’s showpieces but the kind that turned glass to slag and made steel run like wax. She spoke a word, one she had not used since the siege at Davenrock, and let the power run down her arm and into the lock.

The door’s wood exploded inward, taking with it the brass handle and half the toy chest. The barricade of blocks and small furniture scattered like a flock of birds, slamming into the blue walls and skittering across the rug. Sunlight poured in after, hot and white, and in the midst of it Allandra stood, face pale, hair wild, eyes so green they seemed lit from within.

She was a spearpoint of intent, a corona of gold magic hissing at her temples, and the line of palace guards behind her was a wall of readied steel and sunlit armor. Daravan entered next, sword half-drawn, the calculation in his face outpaced only by the warring obligations; protect the princess, neutralize the threat, do not kill the thing the Queen herself demanded alive. Two more guards fanned to either side, their shields up and eyes fixed on the tableau at the window.

The Queen’s gaze swept over the tableau; her daughter, leaned forward on the rug, hands gentle on the battered curve of a prisoner’s back; the Night Fae herself, all chains and red-rimmed eyes, crouched not in aggression but in the collapsed poise of an animal after the chase.

Allandra did not waste air on warnings. She barked a single command—“Daravan, take her!”—and he surged forward, catching Everly about the ribs in a practiced, gentle hold that immobilized without bruising. The girl’s feet left the rug, arms pinwheeling in protest, but Daravan had carried her as a babe and knew every angle of her struggle. Everly’s first reflex was to bite, then twist, then simply hang as inert and heavy as a sack of grain, her outrage suffusing the room in a volume that the guards would speak of for weeks.

Allandra herself went for the Night Fae. She did not hesitate, did not pause to parse the intention in Serali’s posture, there had been too much uncertainty already. She closed the distance in a stride and a half, faster than the guards or the child could have tracked, and reached for Serali. The woman did not flinch, did not raise her hands. The Queen seized Serali by the throat, hard, precise, just at the notch above the collarbone, and lifted her bodily from the heap of rug and toys, holding her aloft with a strength that was not only Sun Fae, but centuries of inexorable inheritance made flesh.

The chain of the manacles rattled as Serali’s boots left the carpet. Her face, gone white with pain and shock, contorted, not pleading, not even resisting, just the stunned recognition of a thing finally, inevitably caught. Her arms twitched toward the Queen’s wrist, but the old injury at her shoulder gave before her will did, and she ended up clutching the Queen’s sleeve, not in attack but as if to anchor herself for this last, anticipated violence.

Everly shrieked, clawing at Daravan’s arm. “You promised! You promised you wouldn’t hurt her!” The echoes of her voice rebounded off the pastel walls, a child’s yowl, pure with terror and outrage.

But the Queen did not stop. She dragged Serali from the tangle of sunlight and debris, chain scraping a snare line across the rug, and whipped the smaller woman around so that her spine slammed flush to the wall. The force of it knocked the air from Serali’s lungs; her knees buckled and she hung, gasping, chin dipped, the Queen’s hand still caging her throat. Allandra pressed in closer, forearm braced against Serali’s chest, pinning her with the kind of controlled violence that bespoke both mastery and a complete refusal to ever, ever lose hold again.

“Listen to me,” Allandra hissed, so low only the two of them could hear it. Her breath was hot, sharp with the metallic tang of adrenaline. “If you move, if you so much as think of reaching for my daughter, I will end you.” Her eyes searched Serali’s face, but it had gone blank, her violet eyes glassed over and distant, lips parted but bloodless. This was not the look of a caged animal about to bite, nor the mask of a traitor nursing her last, desperate spell. It was the look of someone who had been hollowed out, left only the scaffold of self-preservation, and even that stripped to its brittle core.

Allandra, who had expected spit or a curse or even a final lunge, was caught by the absence of fight. She searched the ruined face for deception, for the tendril of Xuiven malice she’d been raised to see in every night-haired interloper, but found only a blankness so complete it threatened to absorb her own fury. The sensation was sickening, as if she were throttling a doll rather than a flesh-and-blood enemy, and for a split second she saw herself from the outside, golden, terrible, and afraid.

The child’s shriek split the air, shrill as a lark in the jaws of a hawk. “Stop! Let her go! You promised, Mama, you PROMISED!” The sound stabbed through the Queen’s composure as surely as if Everly had struck her open-handed. Allandra’s fingers, already a breath from crushing the larynx of a woman who might have been her enemy, her double, or her premonition, faltered. For a single beat, the room was a spasm of contradictory stillness; Serali’s body limp, the guards tense and bristling, Everly’s face incandescent with betrayal.

Allandra’s grip faltered, not from lack of strength, but from the sudden, unbearable clarity of what this scene would look like in her daughter’s memory: her mother, radiant with violence, strangling the life from a woman too broken to resist. The Queen made a choice, quick and ruthless:Allandra wrenched Serali away from the wall, her grip shifting from throat to the iron collar at her neck. She dragged the girl across the rug, boots snagging on the toy chest debris, and shoved her through the open door into the corridor beyond. The guards fell back in astonished silence, parted by the force of the Queen’s will alone. Daravan, still holding Everly, hesitated a moment too long, long enough for the princess to slip free and land running, her small feet slapping the flagstones as she bolted after her mother.

“Don’t hurt her!” Everly screamed, her voice a breaking, desperate lance in the hush of the hallway. “You promised!” She hurtled forward with such reckless speed that the two nearest guards flinched, uncertain whether to restrain her or themselves.

Allandra did not break stride. She half-dragged, half-propelled Serali down the hall, toward the stairwell, the chain lashing behind her like an animal’s tail, and did not pause until she hit the end of the corridor and whipped Serali around toward the stairs. She barked an order—“Take the princess to her rooms. Now. Bar every door along the way.” The words carried the weight of command that none dared contest.

Two guards peeled off, scooping up Everly by the armpits, one on each side, and carried her as she kicked, screaming at the top of her lungs and raining small, surprisingly precise fists on their armor. “Put me down! Mama!” she howled, the vowels flattened by outrage and snot.

Allandra did not look back. She pushed Serali ahead, the woman’s feet barely catching each step, and the guards fell in behind, their boots a drumline of unyielding order. At the landing, Daravan overtook them, his face set and unreadable, but his hand hovered near the hilt of his sword.

At the stairwell’s base, a young palace guard stood at parade rest, eyes darting from the bruised, reeling prisoner to the Queen’s set jaw and bloodless knuckles. He was too new to know the script: arrest the Night Fae, protect the Queen, or simply get out of the way. Allandra made the decision for him. She shoved Serali so hard toward the guard that her feet tangled and she went down on one knee. The guard caught her by the arm, surprised by the weight and heat of her, and for a strange moment the two of them regarded each other, equally unsure who was meant to be in control.

“Take her to the vault,” Allandra snapped, voice fissured with a rage that would not be denied.

The guard nodded, lips pressed white, and half-dragged, half-carried Serali down the dim corridor.
