Counterfeit Hero

”Living in this dark, womanless world, eating and waiting to die. Is this the life of a pirate? No! This is the life of a wretch. Pirates should be respected, should live in villas with sea views, should enjoy more exquisite food than the nobles and the most expensive, finest wine, and the most beautiful women!”

Fatty’s words were heard countless times by the pirates every day, they could almost recite them word for word. However, every time they listened, they felt differently. These feelings changed as their distracting thoughts gradually diminished.

”Follow me closely. One day, when you surpass my training, you won’t have to train anymore! I’ll take you and become the most powerful people in this world! Enjoy everything you’ve never experienced before!”

Nobody doubted his words.

Just look at the commander who controls every aspect of their lives, and those leaders big and small, then look at the silent and obedient Leray soldiers, and the battleship in the dock. The pirates understood that as long as this madman spoke it, he could do it.

”Pirates! By nature, we are desperados!” Fatty on the playground was constantly rousing the pirates with all kinds of means, stirring up their spirits and igniting a murderous aura: ”This is our greatest asset! If you want to earn respect, then damn well risk your life for it!”

All the pirates gritted their teeth.

They were exiles in the universe. They had no family nor future.

They gasped for breath, endured the burning in their lungs, dragged their sore, heavy legs to avoid falling behind — because of fear, because of the future, because of the disdainful eyes of the Leray soldiers, and because this isolated group had no way out.

”Do you feel the exhaustion in your bodies? It means you are still alive!” Fatty ran alongside the team, shouting loudly at a pale-faced pirate on the edge: ”Aside from playing with women, drinking, and gambling, show me your real skills!”

Fatty’s roar continued.

The entire base was enveloped in the sounds of machines roaring, chaotic footsteps, dense gunfire, hoarse commands, and his mad roaring.

The camera panned from Fatty to a full view of the training ground.

Helen sighed blankly. Although she didn’t want to admit it, every time she saw the current base, she always felt like crying.

In this deep corner of the universe, far from Leray, that Fatty was struggling every second.

Yes, he was stirring everyone up, struggling desperately.

Helen couldn’t understand what was supporting the roaring Fatty in the footage. If it were her, she might have given up long ago when they were ambushed by the Western Alliance Fleet.

Even if she were lucky enough to come to this pirate base alive, she had already despaired upon hearing the news that the Saleria Federation had withdrawn from the war. Everyone knew what it meant for the already unstable Leray Federation to lose the mutual support of Saleria at this moment.

Who still cared about the outcome of the war? The result was already predetermined!

If she had to choose, it would be either return to Leray with a desperate gamble or act like an ostrich at this pirate base, burying her head in the sand and waiting for the dust to settle.

But Fatty was different.

He was almost stubbornly and obsessively making efforts.

His figure appeared in the dock, at the harbor, and on the battleships, as well as in the meeting room and the command room. He worked through the night with the newly formed staff department and the staff to make plans; he discussed the design and modification of space mecha and warships with logistics and mechanics engineers.

Even if he stayed up all night, he appeared on the training ground every day on time, training with the warriors. After a few days, he had turned those lazy and numb pirates and the strong and obedient Leray warriors into one unified force. The pirates were still afraid of him, but Helen could clearly feel the fusion between the pirates and the Leray soldiers — it was a spiritual fusion.

The numb pirates started to care about the looks from the Leray soldiers. They began to win respect through their actions. They started to realize that they were no longer the exiled ones, scolded and ordered around by the leaders, wandering lonely in the universe.

They were becoming more and more rugged in silence.

There were less than three days before this newly formed team went on its first mission.
