Counterfeit Hero

Chapter 452: Volume 5 Chapter 58 The Hunt

Many soldiers and officers on Reinhardt’s side later recalled that, if that ramshackle [Magic Beast] had not appeared at that moment, they would have all thought this battle was over.

As ordinary mecha warriors still striving to break through hand speeds of 20 or 25, perhaps they would never see that breathtaking moment, never have the chance to witness the pinnacle of mecha warrior duels.

Just as [Vajra] was fully committing to its final forced division against Leray Mecha Camp, a feline-like [Magic Beast] lightly leaped onto the gentle slope of the hill under everyone’s watchful eyes.

Its position was very subtle, exposed under the eyes of all mechas at the bottom of the battlefield, yet hidden from the sight of [Vajra] below the hill and the four mechas at the top. To the thousands of mechas near and far below the hill, it didn’t even cast a single glance, silent and undisturbed.

Its movements were so light, yet so swift, like a tiger preparing to sprint, making one suddenly feel that even if the tiger’s target was someone else, they would still feel like a prey in a moment of panic. Everyone who saw this mecha felt that the entire battlefield fell into a deathly silence at that moment; the sound of cannons and cries of battle seemed far away, unreachable. Only heavy breathing remained.

”Behind us! Ambush!”

The commander of the 96th Division couldn’t help but shout in the communication channel!

When the commander sitting in the front-line command vehicle saw this [Magic Beast], he felt a sudden tightness in his chest. The warning he issued to Reinhardt was less a reminder and more a subconscious exclamation!

According to his later recollection, after he issued the warning, he even clearly felt the [Magic Beast] turn and glance at him, a sense of oppression making his back cold and hands and feet numb. Soon, the lightly running [Magic Beast] suddenly accelerated, darting towards the nearby mountaintop like lightning.

At the sound of the warning, the first to react was the Fourth Group Commander Garcia of the Mythical Army. He was piloting a modified [Hurricane], standing right behind Reinhardt, and was the closest to the [Magic Beast].

Garcia abruptly turned around...he could only turn around! All the reactions of this Level 8 warrior came to an end at that moment!

The speed of the [Magic Beast] suddenly increased once again; all anyone heard was a loud ”boom!” The modified [Hurricane], like a lamb whose neck was bitten off by a fierce tiger, was knocked down by the [Magic Beast] in a fierce roar and clash of steel claws and teeth, falling into the flying dust without a single struggle!

Every mecha warrior who witnessed this scene felt their nearly bursting heart was struck by a heavy iron hammer, a surge of blood rushing to their head, their brains ringing!

Garcia, the oldest and most experienced Level 8 mecha warrior of the Mythical Army, fell just like that? How could anyone believe what was happening before their eyes?

Under the [Magic Beast]’s attack, what difference was there between that [Hurricane] and a fragile, motionless puppet?

Even Reinhardt and the two commanders closest to the [Magic Beast] were simultaneously stunned! They only regained their composure when they saw the cockpit of the modified [Hurricane] had turned into a gaping hole.

In the blink of an eye, the ramshackle [Magic Beast] flew up without pause, like a piercing arrow, straight toward the golden [Apollo]’s chest. Its speed was as rapid as thunder and lightning.

Reinhardt, shocked, suddenly pulled the control lever, retreating [Apollo] instinctively at full speed. Instantly, the golden and black mechas merged into a streak of flowing light, advancing and retreating as fast as flying arrows. The unexpected high-speed turning and shifting, like light refracted through countless mirrors, was dazzling.

[Apollo] moved quickly, but after all, it was retreating and had no chance to turn around. The [Magic Beast]’s close pursuit was like a wolf stalking its prey, with an ion dagger magically appearing and disappearing, relentlessly aiming at [Apollo]’s vital chest, determined to deliver a fatal blow!

Reinhardt felt sweat soaking his body, hair standing on end, his control completely pushed to the limit in that moment, yet he could never shake off the [Magic Beast]’s chase. Instead, the [Magic Beast] was getting closer and closer, so close he could feel the cold chill emanating from the ion dagger.

A chilling threat Reinhardt had never experienced made him gasp for breath, making him feel the fear of imminent death for the first time. It was like dancing with the Grim Reaper.

Five meters, three meters... [Magic Beast] was approaching rapidly with a strange gait, producing a suffocating sense of oppression.

All the mecha warriors watching this scene held their breath, their eyelids twitching violently, pupils contracting sharply, hearts pounding fiercely. Every one of them tensed every nerve, awaiting the final, earth-shattering strike.

The streaks of flowing light gradually merged; at the moment when the ion dagger of the [Magic Beast] nearly shattered [Apollo]’s cockpit with high-frequency vibrations, [Apollo]’s body twisted sharply and darted to the right. A ripping sound was heard as a large gash was torn open on the left side of [Apollo]’s chest.

Amid the exclamations of everyone, the fierce [Magic Beast] completely ignored [Apollo]’s turning, stepping off and twisting back up in a more contorted posture. It seemed like it was truly [Apollo]’s shadow; all inertia and reaction delays were nonexistent!

This level of control is so terrifying it sends chills down one’s spine!

Just when everyone thought there was no chance for [Apollo] to escape, an astonishing scene unfolded. Leray, with a backhand grab, pushed the First Battalion Commander Boge, who had been helping to block [Magic Beast], in front of him.

At the same time, the mecha piloted by Third Battalion Commander Horn also arrived. The two mechas, like two closing doors, trapped [Magic Beast] and [Apollo] in between!

No one dared to believe their eyes; was this still the Reinhardt they worshipped like a war god?

The heavy injury to his chest made [Apollo] lose all fighting spirit. Despicably using Boge to escape danger, he turned without any hesitation, not daring to look back, and fled straight towards the [Vajra] mecha group down the hill.

Among the uproar of the warriors witnessing this, [Magic Beast] let out a cold snort, charging towards the two Level 8 Mecha Warriors like a cannonball fired from a barrel.

In a flash of lightning and sparks, everyone saw a blur. They heard the rapid and abrupt clanging of metal as if from a machine gun... In the dead silence that followed, they saw that [Magic Beast]’s left mechanical arm had twisted off the neck of Boge’s [Sagittarius], and its right ion dagger had plunged into the cockpit of Horn’s [Walker] mecha.

Everything happened in an instant! In the attack by [Magic Beast], the four pillars of the Mythical Army, including the Level 9 Mecha Warrior Reinhardt, either fled or died without the slightest chance to fight back!

Many warriors of the Reinhardt Group halted their attacks, completely stunned by what had just transpired. They were appalled by Reinhardt’s despicableness and terrified by the prowess of that [Magic Beast] mecha!

Watching [Magic Beast] discard the two Mythical Army commanders’ mechas and charge down the hill, everyone had only one feeling: the pilot inside that [Magic Beast] was a devil!

But the devil’s tricks were not over. As Reinhardt slipped into the [Vajra] mecha group at the bottom of the slope, Leray’s Spearhead Camp finally revealed their ferocious nature.

First to strike were the wings of heavy mechas, suddenly ramping up their firepower. One [Vajra] after another exploded under the sudden barrage, and the entire formation was riddled with holes as if swept by a machine gun.

The two hundred [Hunters], who had been struggling moments before, now surged forward like a sharp knife through tofu. Like wolves among sheep, they were unstoppable. The [Vajra] warriors, who had just been evenly matched with them, found themselves losing balance at the slightest touch from these Ninth Generation mechas, let alone fighting back!

Two spherical Leray mecha formations demonstrated terrifying power as they suddenly spread left and right. The continuous and brutal attacks quickly tore the front ends of two [Vajra] battalions to shreds!

”Retreat!” With eyes nearly popping out of his head, Reinhardt realized he had fallen into that Fatty’s trap once again. In that bastard’s hands, the threat to [Vajra] was not something mere superhard alloy armor could solve!

As the officers and soldiers of the Reinhardt Group were horrified by this sudden change, a loud battle horn sounded from afar.

”Kill!” With the bugles and the deafening shouts, two Mecha Groups from the Freedom Front flooded over the infantry’s defensive positions like a tide, joining the three regiments of the Nineteen Division, and aggressively advancing toward the southern battlefield.

In front of them, a batch of low-altitude missiles, having just arrived on the battlefield, had already created a dense sea of fire and explosions. The timing was perfect.

Meanwhile, the two Leray Armored Groups, which had been on the defensive, launched a full-scale, ferocious counterattack. Dividing into three arrowheads, they drove straight into the enemy mecha groups trying to separate them. Each mecha displayed unimaginable combat power, with three steel torrents turning the entire battlefield upside down.
