Chapter 440: Chapter 188: The Knight’s Battle

The sun was slowly setting, and as winter approached, the villagers respectfully added wood to the fire inside the cabin, asking Laine what he would like to eat for the night. They assured him they would do their best to prepare it for him, but Laine insisted that he had brought his own food and they need not trouble themselves.

Even so, the villagers brought him two fish and a rabbit.

Sitting on the straw and wooden floor by the fireplace, Laine gently embraced Veronica’s proud figure, softly speaking, ”It’s still a few hours until sunset, and vampires usually prefer to come out at around ten or even eleven at night. Before then, we should...”

”Laine! You rascal!” Who would’ve thought Veronica would interrupt him with a fierce step on his foot, her face flushed: ”Have you any idea where we are?! Wait till we’re back in your domain and I’ll naturally spend more time with you, but not here, it’s too dirty, and someone might see us.”

”That’s not what I meant, my Great Witch!” Laine complained, ”Veronica, I’m not that kind of person. We’re at the brink of battle; how could I have such thoughts? What I mean is we should have a good talk.”

Only then did Veronica glance at him, the witch pushing away Laine’s hand from around her waist. Her beautiful almond eyes focused on the burning flames in the fireplace and the roasting fish above, and she spoke, ”So what does my Great Knight want to discuss with me?”

Laine’s blue eyes reflected the fire’s flames within the cabin, and the Holy Grail Knight remained silent for a long while.

”Did you ever think this day would come? Divine Chosen Champion? Baron with lands?” Laine added a piece of firewood from the villagers into the fire and, unexpectedly, seemed somewhat lackluster.

”I did, I’ve always believed in you, Laine, my man.” Veronica’s expression softened as she grasped Laine’s rough hand, ”I just didn’t expect it so soon. There are less than a thousand Great Nobles in all of Brittania. Even if you include all the Holy Grail Knights, it doesn’t reach fifteen hundred, and you have already entered the country’s core. You’ve done well.”

”But I’m not satisfied.” Laine shook his head. After thinking for a moment, he continued, ”You know, Veronica, the Lady told me that in the north, another Chaos Eternal God-Chosen has been born.”

”Another Chaos Eternal God-Chosen?! But... hasn’t it only been just over 150 years since the Great Holy War?” Veronica exclaimed in surprise.

”The birth of a Chaos Eternal God-Chosen has nothing to do with time, my dear.” Laine gently caressed Veronica’s small hand and continued.

Just like the Lake Fairy said, the birth of a Chaos Eternal God-Chosen doesn’t actually relate to time, as there is no concept of time in the Subspace, only endless battles and endless Chaos.

The most typical case was once discovered by the High Elf Great Mage Tygris—a newly fallen High Elf found a record thousands of years ago. This High Elf, who became a Slaanesh Champion, was slain by Ainarieo’s army.

Thinking about this carefully, it’s chilling—is some people’s downfall destined, and is the world’s future doomed to darkness?

No one knows, not even the Emperor could provide Laine with an answer.

Also, do the Chaos Four Gods truly need an Eternal God-Chosen?

Actually, that’s not quite it. The Chaos Four Gods’ greatest amusement lies in waging war among themselves within the Chaos Realm of Subspace; the Prime Material World is merely a small snack for them when idle, for the world-ending desires of Eternal God-Chosens don’t particularly interest them.

Thus, the tests set by the Chaos Four Gods for the Eternal God-Chosens are astonishingly difficult. To them, if a challenger fails the tests and dies, it’s his own fault, and the Four Gods gain plenty of amusement. If someone does pass the test, such a high-quality pawn satisfies their needs.

Since the Ancient Saint’s teleportation gate was destroyed, only five Chaos Champions have passed their tests to become Chaos Eternal God-Chosens. Logically, Eternal Divine Chosen Aizhen should be the fifth.

Then why do historical records only document two Chaos Eternal God-Chosens (the first ”Unifier” Moka, the second ”Anointed” Aisakuval) leading armies south?

Because the other two hadn’t managed to unite the Northern Barbarians and lead them south before being slain by other Demon Princes or Chaos Great Demons.

”I need your help; I need more of your help, Veronica.” Bringing the conversation to a close, Laine wasn’t planning on saying more. He merely told Veronica, ”First, focus on building up the territory. I need to form a powerful army and a stable rear.”

”Since I’m here, it’s definitely to help you, Laine.” Veronica smiled sweetly, ”I’ve already discussed things with Speaker Margarita. Once the Wizard Tower is built, Jialan will set up a branch here, and we’ll regularly send some witch apprentices here for study and practice, also helping you develop the territory.”

”...” Laine remained silent, thinking that the Jialan Council had their considerations too. However, Laine couldn’t refuse since he indeed needed the help of witches.

Just as Ollica said, within his faction, the influence of the Lake Fairy’s forces was overly dominant, and he needed a new force to balance things out.
