The Queen's Mage

Chapter 152: The Choice

Mara came in with tea, which meant something terrible had happened.

Not because tea itself was ominous. Tea, in Serali’s experience, happened constantly in Andalusia. People drank it before council, after council, during council if the discussion was especially stupid. They drank it when tired, when cold, when avoiding saying something difficult, when preparing to say something difficult, when pretending not to have already said the difficult thing badly.

But Mara had brought the quiet tray.

Serali knew the difference now.

The ordinary tray had bread, fruit, sometimes cheese, sometimes whatever pastry Everly had attempted to smuggle through official channels. The court tray had tonic, folded napkins, something small enough to eat without noticing, and space left deliberately uncluttered.

The quiet tray had only tea, honey, one cup, and no expectation.

Mara set it on the low table and did not say anything.

Serali sat in the hearth chair with the shawl around her shoulders and stared at the fire.

The room was too warm.

That should have helped.

It did not.

Her hands had stopped shaking sometime after Verya and Marielle left her at the door. Or perhaps they had not stopped. Perhaps she had simply folded them tightly enough in her lap that the shaking had nowhere visible to go.

Mara poured tea.

The sound was small. Civilized. Horrible.

Serali looked at the cup.

“I don’t want it.”

“I know.”

Mara set it near her anyway.

Not close enough to require taking.

Just close enough to become possible.

That was one of Mara’s more dangerous skills.

For a while, the only sounds were the fire, the faint rain at the window, and Mara moving quietly through the room making it less hostile by degrees. Curtains drawn. Extra lamp extinguished. Door to the study half-closed. Vulmar’s name nowhere in the air.

Serali kept hearing it anyway.

Our daughter.

Not in his voice. She had not heard his voice in years. Not truly. Memory had a way of replacing sound with injury.

The scribe had read it.

A stranger’s mouth.

A king’s claim.

Our daughter.

Serali’s stomach tightened.

Now he had remembered blood.

Serali’s hand moved toward the tea.

Stopped.

Mara did not comment.

A knock came at the outer door.

Serali went still.

Mara looked toward it, then back to Serali.

Not asking yet.

Listening.

The knock came again.

Not Allandra’s.

Daravan’s.

Mara crossed to the door and opened it only partway.

Serali could hear his voice, low and even.

“Mara. Her Majesty asks whether the Royal Mage will receive a question.”

A question.

Not the queen.

Not a summons.

Not even a request to enter.

A question.

Serali closed her eyes.

The bond stirred under its closed latch, aching toward the hallway like an animal that knew a familiar hand stood somewhere beyond the door.

Mara looked back.

Her face asked nothing aloud.

Serali’s mouth was dry. “What question?”

Mara turned back to Daravan.

A murmur. Then Mara returned, leaving the door mostly closed behind her.

“Her Majesty asks whether she may come to you,” Mara said. “If the answer is no, she will not ask again tonight.”

Serali looked at the fire.

The flames blurred.

She hated that.

She had been claimed in a council chamber by a man who had never cared whether she lived except as proof of his line. She had stood upright. She had answered on record. She had walked to her rooms between Verya and Marielle while neither touched her. She had crossed the threshold herself.

And now a door stood between her and Allandra, and Allandra was asking.

Not taking.

Not coming because she wanted to.

Asking.

Serali pressed her fingers against her mouth.

Mara waited.

No hurry. No pressure. No helpful interpretation. Only the question, placed gently within reach.

“Yes,” Serali said.

The word was almost nothing.

Mara heard it anyway.

She went back to the door.

Daravan’s footsteps receded.

Not long after, Allandra came.

She entered through the outer door.

Not the servants’ passage.

Serali noticed.

Of course she noticed.

Allandra wore no crown. Only a dark green gown and a plain shawl pinned at one shoulder, as if someone had reminded her she was allowed to be cold. Her hair was braided but not as neatly as court required. Her face looked composed from a distance and devastated up close.

Mara stepped aside.

Allandra did not cross the room at once.

She stood just inside the door, one hand still near the latch, and looked at Serali in the chair by the fire.

“May I come in?”

Serali almost laughed.

The door was already closed behind her.

Still, the question mattered.

“You may.”

Allandra’s breath moved.

Not quite relief.

Not yet.

She came in slowly, stopping several paces from the hearth. Too far to touch. Close enough that Serali could feel her even through the closed bond: heat held carefully back, fear contained behind glass, love so disciplined it hurt to look at.

Mara picked up the quiet tray.

Serali looked at her sharply.

Mara paused.

The thought of being alone with Allandra was unbearable.

The thought of not being alone with Allandra was worse.

Mara, damn her, understood both.

“I will be in the next room,” she said.

Not leaving.

Not staying.

The correct third thing.

Serali nodded once.

Mara went into the study and left the door half-open.

Allandra watched the choice.

Then looked back at Serali.

For several moments, neither spoke.

The fire shifted in the grate.

Rain tapped lightly at the windows.

Allandra’s hands were folded in front of her.

Too tightly.

Her knuckles had gone pale.

Serali wanted to comfort her.

No.

That was not fair.

That was not the order tonight.

Allandra seemed to know it too, because when she finally spoke, her voice was low and deliberate.

”I will not send you back.”

Serali’s throat closed.

Allandra did not move closer.

”I cannot promise he will not try to reach you,” she said. ”I cannot promise there will be no rumors. No political cost. No danger.”

Her jaw tightened.

”I cannot promise that Lyehira will not use your name, your blood, or your brother.”

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

Serali flinched.

Only slightly.

Allandra saw.

”But I can promise this.”

The words came carefully now, each one chosen before it was spoken.

”I will not give you to him.”

Silence settled over the room.

”Not by treaty.”

A heartbeat.

”Not by law.”

Another.

”Not because he suddenly remembers blood.”

She drew a slow breath.

”Not while I breathe.”

Serali stared into the fire because if she looked at Allandra she would break.

Not while I breathe.

It was too much.

Too close to becoming a promise neither of them could survive.

Serali swallowed.

“You should not say dramatic things to people in crisis.”

Allandra’s mouth twitched.

It was not a smile.

Almost.

“I will try to moderate my phrasing.”

“You won’t.”

“No.”

Serali closed her eyes.

A laugh tried to come and failed.

Allandra’s voice softened. “May I sit?”

Serali opened her eyes and looked at the chair opposite.

The green one. Drafty.

Of course.

“You may.”

Allandra sat.

The distance between the chairs felt enormous.

It was not.

Serali could have crossed it in two steps.

She did not.

Allandra did not either.

Good.

Awful.

For a while, they only sat with the fire between them.

Allandra looked down at her own hands.

”There is...” she began quietly.

She stopped.

The silence stretched.

When she tried again, the words sounded almost painful.

”There is another possibility.”

Serali looked up.

Allandra still wasn’t looking at her.

”Hagen suggested it.”

Serali waited.

”He believes...” Allandra swallowed. ”...he believes you would be safest outside both kingdoms.”

A knot tightened in Serali’s stomach. ”What does that mean?”

”I could ask one of our allies to grant you sanctuary.”

Another pause.

”Queen Celestine.”

Serali frowned faintly.

”The Queen of Aurenne.”

Understanding came slowly.

Not all at once.

”You mean...”

”She would offer you protection.”

Allandra forced herself onward.

”You would not belong to Avalusia.”

A breath.

”You would not belong to Lyehira. You would belong to yourself.”

”If...” Allandra said carefully, ”if that was what you wanted... I would arrange it.”

Those words cost her.

Serali could hear it.

”I would ask nothing of you.”

Another pause.

”I would not ask you to stay because of me.”

The room became impossibly quiet.

Serali looked at Allandra for a long moment.

”You don’t want me to go.”

Allandra’s fingers tightened together.

”No.”

Barely audible.

”I don’t.”

”You hate saying this.”

”I do.”

Finally she lifted her eyes.

Serali’s chest hurt.

Gods.

She had known Allandra loved her.

She had not understood until this moment that Allandra loved her enough to offer the thing that would hurt her most.

Not because she believed it was right.

Because she believed Serali deserved the choice.

”You would help me leave.”

”If that is what you chose.”

”And then?”

Allandra smiled.

It was the saddest smile Serali had ever seen.

”Then I would write to Queen Celestine far more often than dignity permits.”

A laugh escaped Serali before she could stop it.

It hurt.

It helped.

She shook her head. ”I ran once.”

Allandra said nothing.

”I don’t want to spend the rest of my life running.”

The words surprised Serali almost as much as they surprised Allandra.

She sat with them for a moment.

Then continued. ”If I go to Aurenne...”

She looked toward the fire.

”...Vulmar learns that threatening Avalusia is enough to move me.”

Allandra’s expression tightened.

”He’ll do it again.”

”Yes.”

”And again.”

”Yes.”

”There isn’t a country far enough away to outrun a king.”

”No.”

Serali breathed slowly. ”I chose to stay.”

She looked around the room.

”I chose this palace.”

The fire.

”The work.”

The books stacked beside the hearth.

”Breakfast.”

The velvet box in the next room that carefully kept every card Everly had ever drawn.

”The ridiculous spider legislation.”

That finally earned the ghost of a smile from Allandra.

Then Serali looked directly at her.

”And I chose you.”

The room seemed to stop breathing.

”I don’t want to leave.”

The words were astonishingly simple.

No declarations.

No poetry.

Just truth.

Allandra looked away.

Only for a heartbeat.

When she looked back, her composure had returned.

Mostly.

”I was hoping,” she admitted quietly, ”you would say that.”

Neither of them moved.

They no longer needed the distance.

They simply had not yet crossed it.

Chapter 153: The Fear

For a while, they only sat with the fire between them.

Serali’s body wanted to lean toward her. Her fear wanted to lock every door. Her pride wanted to make some knife-edged remark about diplomacy. Her heart, inconvenient creature, wanted Allandra’s arms around her with such simple force that she resented it.

Allandra waited.

That was becoming the worst thing about her.

She could wait.

Serali rubbed her thumb over the edge of the shawl. “I hate him.”

Allandra’s gaze lifted.

Serali kept looking at the fire. “That should be clean.”

“It isn’t?”

“No.”

Allandra said nothing.

Good.

If she had said of course it is or you have every right, Serali might have thrown something.

“I do hate him,” Serali said. “I hate Rania. I hate the court. I hate the soldiers who took me. I hate the way everyone spoke around me as if my life was a clerical inconvenience. I hate him for remembering I exist only when I became useful.”

Her fingers tightened in the shawl.

“But Lyehira is not only him.”

“No,” Allandra said softly.

Serali looked at her then.

Allandra’s face did not show jealousy. Not offense. Not even the fierce territorial anger Serali had feared.

Only attention.

That made it easier.

Worse, then easier.

“There were kitchens,” Serali said. “And old songs. And rain on black stone. And women who would slip me crusts when Rania was not watching, even though they hated me sometimes because hating me was safer than pitying me.”

Her throat tightened.

“And my mother’s village before that. It was small. Ugly in winter. Smelled of sheep and smoke and boiled roots. But it was…” She stopped. “It was before.”

Allandra’s eyes softened.

Serali looked away quickly.

“I have no loyalty to Vulmar,” she said. “None. I need that understood.”

“I understand.”

“But if war starts again, it will not only kill him. It will kill people who had nothing to do with me. People who do not know my name except as a rumor. People who would probably hate me if they did know it.” Her mouth twisted. “It will still matter.”

“Yes.”

Serali’s eyes burned. “Do not agree so gently.”

“I’m sorry.”

“No, you are not.”

“No.”

That almost helped.

Serali drew her knees closer beneath the shawl. “And Cillian.”

Allandra went very still.

Serali noticed.

“He helped me escape,” she said.

“Yes.”

“He stayed.”

Allandra’s voice was careful. “Do you know why?”

Serali laughed once, humorless. “Because one of us had to. Because he thought he could manage Rania. Because he was legitimate enough to survive and not useful enough to be watched every second. Because he was brave, or stupid, or both. Because he loved me.”

The last sentence landed too hard.

Serali pressed her hand to her mouth.

Allandra did not move.

Thank gods.

If she had crossed the room then, Serali would have either shattered or begged, and she did not know which would be worse.

“He is still there,” Serali said after a moment. “Unless he is dead. Or imprisoned. Or loyal to our father now. Or pretending to be loyal. Or furious with me. Or glad I escaped.” She swallowed. “Or all of those things at different hours.”

“Serali.”

“No. Let me be unreasonable.”

“All right.”

“I hate that too.”

“All right?”

“Yes.”

Allandra almost smiled.

Serali’s own mouth nearly answered.

Then the ache returned.

“He will use him,” Serali said. “If he knows. If he suspects Cillian matters to me.”

“He may.”

“You are supposed to say he won’t.”

“I will not lie to you.”

“I know.”

“I am sorry.”

“No, you are not.”

Allandra’s mouth tightened. “No.”

The honesty hurt.

It also held.

“I thought making the choice would end the uncertainty.”

“Did it?”

“No.” Her laugh was small and exhausted. “I thought once I decided to stay, everything else would become simpler.” She shook her head. “Instead every choice seems to have grown teeth.”

Allandra’s face changed.

Pain, love, restraint.

Too much.

Serali looked away.

“You did not cause this,” Allandra said.

Serali closed her eyes. “Neither did you.”

“No.”

“Do not martyr yourself about it later.”

“I will try.”

“You won’t.”

“No.”

A silence.

Then, to Serali’s surprise, Allandra said, “I am afraid.”

Serali opened her eyes.

Allandra sat with her hands folded in her lap, posture straight, face pale.

Not queen admitting strategic concern.

Allandra.

Afraid.

“I know,” Serali said.

“I am afraid for you. For Everly. For Cillian, though I do not know him. For what Vulmar will make of your name before we can answer. For what my court will reveal about itself now that he has given them a new knife.” Her jaw tightened. “And I am afraid that if I try to comfort you while holding all of that, you will feel it and think it is yours to fix.”

Serali stared at her.

The bond ached under the closed latch.

Allandra’s eyes shone in the firelight, but no tears fell.

“I am trying not to make my fear into another room you have to escape,” she said.

Serali’s chest hurt.

Lia had said Allandra feared need becoming pressure.

She had been right.

Of course she had.

“I don’t want to fix your fear,” Serali said.

Allandra’s breath caught.

Serali looked down, embarrassed by the tenderness of the sentence, but kept going because retreat would be worse. “I want it to stop. That is different.”

“Yes.”

“It won’t.”

Allandra’s smile was small.

“I know.”

The fire popped softly.

Serali laughed under her breath. “This is a terrible comfort scene.”

Allandra’s mouth curved, fragile and real. “I am told I am very bad at restful conversation.”

“By whom?”

“Everyone.”

“Good. Self-awareness.”

Allandra’s smile faded. “What do you need?”

There it was.

The question.

Not what do we do. Not what shall I promise. Not how do I solve the king across the border, your brother, the court, the rumors, the cold war, the law, the terror sitting like iron under your tongue.

What do you need?

Serali’s first answer was impossible.

Her second was humiliating.

Her third was simple enough to be frightening.

She looked at Allandra.

“I don’t want to talk about problems for a while.”

Allandra nodded at once. “All right.”

“No politics.”

“No politics.”

Something flickered in Allandra’s face. Sympathy, quickly controlled.

“No Vulmar.”

Allandra’s voice was lower. “No Vulmar.”

Serali swallowed.

Her hands were shaking again.

She unfolded them from the shawl and looked at them as if they belonged to someone else.

“I want…” She stopped.

Allandra waited.

Serali hated that it still took courage to ask for something kind.

“I want you to hold me,” she said.

The words were very small.

The room heard them anyway.

Allandra closed her eyes for the briefest moment.

Relief.

Gratitude.

Heartbreak.

When she opened them again, she was careful once more.

“May I come to you?”

Serali’s breath shuddered.

“Yes.”

Allandra stood.

Slowly.

She crossed the space between the chairs as if the room were sacred or dangerous or both. She stopped in front of Serali and held out one hand.

Serali looked at it.

A hand could be many things.

Command. Grip. Claim. Rescue. Request.

This one waited.

Serali took it.

Allandra’s fingers closed around hers, warm and steady.

The bond answered at once.

Not shouting.

Not heat.

Something deeper.

A recognition that made Serali’s eyes burn again.

Allandra knelt before the chair instead of pulling Serali up.

That broke something.

Just a little.

“Allandra,” Serali whispered.

“I am here.”

The sentence was not a promise of safety.

It was not enough.

It was exactly enough.

Serali leaned forward.

Allandra opened her arms.

The first touch hurt because Serali had been holding herself so tightly. Her shoulder protested. Her breath caught. For one second, panic rose: too close, too much, body trapped, nowhere to go.

Allandra felt it and loosened instantly.

Serali grabbed the front of her gown. “No.”

Allandra went still. “No?”

“No, don’t—” Serali swallowed, furious at herself. “Don’t go. Just less.”

Allandra adjusted at once.

Not releasing. Not enclosing.

Holding without keeping.

Serali pressed her forehead against Allandra’s shoulder.

The scent of her was familiar now: winter air, sun-warmed skin even in cold rooms, faint lavender, and beneath it Allandra herself.

Serali hated how much the familiarity helped.

She let herself sink into it by degrees.

One breath.

Then another.

Allandra’s hand rested between her shoulder blades, light enough to leave, firm enough to feel real.

“Is this all right?” Allandra asked.

Serali’s laugh came out broken. “You ask that now?”

“Yes.”

“Yes.”

The hand settled.

Serali closed her eyes.

For a while, nothing happened.

No solution arrived.

No treaty rewrote itself.

No brother became safe. No father disappeared. No court became trustworthy. No cold war stopped sharpening itself.

Allandra held her.

Serali breathed.

That was all.

It was more than she had expected to survive.

After a while, Allandra shifted carefully onto the rug beside the chair rather than asking Serali to keep leaning awkwardly over the arm.

Serali followed almost without thinking, wrapped in the shawl, until they were both sitting before the hearth like women who had forgotten palaces had furniture.

Allandra leaned back against the chair.

Serali curled against her side, head on her shoulder.

No one spoke.

Mara moved once in the study, then the door closed softly the rest of the way.

Serali opened one eye.

“She left.”

“She is still nearby,” Allandra said.

“I know.”

“Is that all right?”

“Yes.”

Allandra’s arm tightened slightly around her.

Not too much.

Perfectly.

Serali hated that too, but only in the old ceremonial way she hated things that mattered.

For a long time, they listened to the fire.

Eventually, Allandra’s fingers moved once over the edge of Serali’s shawl.

Not stroking. Not quite.

Asking.

Serali answered by settling closer.

The fingers began a slow, careful path along the fabric. Not skin. Not heat. Only touch translated through wool, gentle enough that fear could not find purchase.

Serali’s body, traitorous and exhausted, began to unclench.

The bond warmed.

No words in it.

Good.

Words were dangerous tonight.

After perhaps an hour, perhaps less, Serali said, “Tell me something that doesn’t matter.”

Allandra blinked.

“…That may be the hardest request you’ve made all evening.”

Serali’s mouth twitched. “Improvise.”

A pause.

Then Allandra said, “Everly has begun drafting a legal framework for spider dinner attendance.”

Serali’s mouth twitched against her shoulder.

“That is governance.”

“She has proposed that spiders of good character may sit below the table.”

“Progressive.”

“She also believes Lord Merrow should be assessed by the same standard.”

Serali laughed.

It hurt.

It helped.

Allandra’s arm held steady around her.

“What was your response?” Serali asked.

“I told her character assessments require evidence.”

“She will gather some.”

“I know.”

“Merrow is doomed.”

“I know.”

The laughter faded into quiet.

Not empty quiet.

A better one.

Serali closed her eyes again.

The room felt different from before. The same fire, same walls, same velvet box in the next room, same window latch she had oiled herself.

But Allandra was here now.

Not as answer.

Not as rescue.

As chosen presence.

The thought slid under Serali’s ribs and settled there.

After another long silence, Allandra whispered, “Do you want me to stay tonight?”

Serali did not answer immediately.

The question was dangerous for many reasons.

The palace. The guards. Daravan’s spiritual health. Mara’s knowing eyebrows. Everly’s questions if Allandra looked tired at breakfast. The cold war. The letter. The fact that need, once spoken, could become a habit.

Serali thought of the black wax.

The council table.

The word daughter.

Then she thought of waking in the morning with Allandra cold because Serali had stolen all the blankets.

A small, stubborn warmth moved through her.

“Yes,” she said.

Allandra’s breath changed.

Serali lifted her head enough to look at her. “Not because of him.”

“No.”

“Not because I am afraid.”

Allandra did not contradict her.

Good.

Serali amended, “Not only because I am afraid.”

Allandra’s gaze softened.

“Because I want you here,” Serali said. “And because I do not want to talk anymore.”

Allandra’s hand rose to touch her face, then stopped short.

Serali leaned into it before she could ask.

Allandra’s palm settled against her cheek.

“Then I will stay,” she said.

Serali closed her eyes.

No impossible promise.

No certainty about tomorrow.

Only tonight.

The fire.

The quiet room.

Mara somewhere beyond the door.

And Allandra’s arms around her while, for one night at least, the rest of the world waited outside.
