The Queen's Mage

Chapter 103: Crisis Memoranda

The room settled around them.

The windows were gray with early winter light, the sky beyond still dark at the edges. The hearth in the sitting room had burned low enough that only a faint orange pulse remained through the open bedchamber door. Somewhere far away, the palace began its morning breathing: a door closed softly, a cart wheel creaked in a courtyard, water moved through pipes, a maid laughed and hushed herself.

Serali’s rooms were waking around them.

Allandra’s gaze moved over the bedchamber, seeing it properly for the first time in daylight. The robe had fallen over the chair. One of Serali’s slippers lay on its side near the bed as if defeated. A hairpin glinted on the rug. A book sat facedown on the vanity, spine cracked open in defiance of every archivist in the palace.

Allandra’s mouth curved.

“What?” Serali asked.

“You live here.”

Serali’s expression flattened. “An astute observation.”

“I mean—”

“I know what you mean.”

Allandra looked back at her.

Serali’s eyes had softened, though she clearly resented that too.

“It is still an official residence,” Serali said.

“Of course.”

“Attached to an office I hold provisionally.”

“Verya would be proud.”

“I am no longer sure that is the compliment I once thought it was.”

“It remains safer than Marielle being proud.”

Serali considered. “True.”

Allandra glanced toward the sitting room, where she could just see the edge of the low table and and Everly’s spider invitation.

“Everly will expect you at breakfast,” she said.

Serali closed her eyes. “The spider invitation.”

“Yes.”

“Do I have to answer?”

“You already did, by accepting the card.”

“That is not how invitations work.”

“With Everly, it often is.”

Serali sighed. “She will ask difficult questions.”

“She is four.”

“She is a prosecutor.”

Allandra laughed.

Then the laughter faded.

The word breakfast had done what warmth and daylight had not.

It had reminded her that morning existed.

And morning meant doors. Guards. Servants. Schedules. Daravan.

Allandra went still.

Serali felt the change instantly.

Her fingers tightened. “What?”

Allandra looked toward the outer door.

The public door.

Not the passage.

The public door through which she had entered last night, because it allowed refusal. Because it mattered that Serali could open or not open. Because she had wanted honesty to begin correctly.

The guards had seen her arrive.

The guards had seen the queen enter Serali’s suite after bedtime.

The guards had not seen her leave.

Allandra sat up.

Serali, still wrapped in blankets, blinked at the sudden movement. “What happened?”

“The guards.”

Serali frowned. “What about them?”

“They saw me come in.”

“Yes.”

“And I did not leave.”

Serali stared at her.

Understanding arrived slowly.

Then all at once.

“Oh.”

“Yes.”

Serali looked toward the bedchamber door, then back at Allandra. “Could they think you left through the passage?”

Allandra gave her a look.

Serali grimaced. “Right. Worse.”

“Potentially.”

“Because then they would wonder why the queen came through the public door and left through a hidden servants’ passage from the Royal Mage’s bedroom.”

“Yes.”

“That does sound less ideal when phrased carefully.”

Allandra slid out of bed and reached for her discarded gown.

Serali clutched the blankets closer, watching her. “Do not look like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like you are drafting a crisis memorandum in your head while half undressed.”

“I am drafting several.”

“That is unromantic.”

“Yes.”

“And unnecessary?”

Allandra paused.

She turned back.

Serali was sitting up now, hair wild, shoulders bare above the stolen blankets, eyes narrowed not with fear but with focus. The sight nearly undid every memorandum in Allandra’s head.

She looked away.

“No,” Allandra said. “It may be necessary.”

Serali’s expression sobered.

The afterglow, if that was the word, did not vanish. It steadied into something harder.

“What happens if they talk?”

“Most palace guards know better than to gossip about the private movements of the queen.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No.” Allandra pulled her gown up and fastened the front with fingers that were mostly steady. “They could be questioned by anyone suspicious enough to notice patterns. A guard does not need to gossip to become evidence.”

Serali’s mouth tightened.

“And if someone learns?”

Allandra looked at her.

There it was again. The dangerous edge between them and the world.

“If someone learns,” Allandra said, “then we decide what must be answered and what remains private.”

Serali laughed once, without humor. “That sounds like Verya.”

“It is mostly hers.”

“You were ready for this?”

“No.” Allandra found her belt and drew it around her waist. “I was afraid of this.”

“That is different.”

“Yes.”

Serali looked down at her hands, half-lost in the blankets.

The bond shifted, not panic, exactly. Calculation. Old instinct rising to count exits, witnesses, lies.

Allandra hated that she had caused that on this morning of all mornings.

“I am sorry,” she said.

Serali looked up sharply. “Do not.”

“I should have thought—”

“You did think. That was the problem.”

Allandra blinked.

Serali pushed the hair out of her face, scowling. “You came through the public door because you wanted me to be able to refuse you.”

“Yes.”

“That was the right thing.”

“It also created a problem.”

“Many right things do.”

Allandra went still.

Serali’s face softened by a fraction, though her voice remained pointed. “Do not turn this into proof that you should have used the passage.”

Allandra had been doing exactly that.

Quietly.

Efficiently.

Cruelly.

Serali saw it.

Of course she did.

Allandra sat slowly on the edge of the bed, not close enough to presume, but near enough that the mattress dipped between them.

“You are right,” she said.

Serali’s brows rose. “Say that again.”

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it’s taken without the author’s consent. Report it.

“No.”

“Cruel.”

“You are right,” Allandra said anyway, because Serali deserved the words more than Allandra deserved dignity. “The public door was the right choice. The consequence is ours to manage.”

Serali held her gaze.

Then nodded once.

“Good,” she said. “Now manage it.”

Allandra almost smiled.

Almost.

Then she considered the matter.

“We do not sneak,” she said.

Serali blinked. “We don’t?”

“No. Sneaking now makes the guards witnesses to concealment instead of discretion.”

“Palace logic is exhausting.”

“Yes.”

“So you walk out through the same door?”

“Yes.”

“After spending the night?”

“Yes.”

Serali stared. “Bold.”

“It suggests there was nothing improper to hide.”

“There was something improper to hide.”

Allandra’s mouth moved despite herself. “Several things.”

Serali’s face colored, but she did not look away. “Yes.”

The warmth that rose between them was badly timed and therefore inevitable.

Allandra looked toward the window. “We need a reason.”

“Do queens usually need reasons for visiting officials late at night?”

“No. But everyone invents them anyway.”

Serali leaned back against the headboard, thinking. “Everly’s card explains arrival.”

“That explains why I came with paper in my hand.”

“Lia.”

Allandra looked at her.

Serali’s gaze sharpened with thought now, fully awake. “You came after speaking with Lia. That part is true.”

“Yes.”

“But not about the bond.”

“No.”

“And not about heat.”

“Absolutely not.”

Serali’s mouth twisted. “So what did Lia officially consult on?”

Allandra considered. “Your recovery.”

Serali stared. “That is vague enough to be suspicious.”

“Your recovery from iron injury.”

Serali’s expression changed.

Not badly.

But the words still touched something raw.

Allandra regretted them at once. “Serali—”

“No. That works.” Serali looked toward the sitting room. “It is true. Lia did see me yesterday. I am still under her care. You are responsible for my office and protection.”

“And your appointment remains politically sensitive.”

“Meaning late consultation is tedious, private, and no one wants to know the details unless they are exceptionally foolish.”

“Unfortunately, this palace produces exceptional fools at scale.”

“Then we make it more boring.” Serali drew the blanket higher, thinking. “You came to deliver Everly’s invitation. I was awake. We discussed Lia’s recommendations for my continued recovery and the limits of my duties while I remain under treatment.”

Allandra stared at her.

Serali opened her eyes again. “The conversation ran late. Because it involved medical privacy and Royal Mage duties, you chose not to summon a clerk.”

“Good.”

“And because leaving in the middle of the night would create more attention than leaving at morning bell—”

“Also good.”

“—you remained in the sitting room.”

Allandra paused.

Serali looked at her.

“That part is less true,” Allandra said.

“It is palace truth. It has a decorative relationship with reality.”

Despite herself, Allandra laughed.

Serali pointed at her. “Do not enjoy my corruption.”

“I am trying not to.”

“You are failing.”

“Yes.”

Allandra sobered. “I do not want to imply you were medically unstable.”

“Neither do I.”

“Or fragile.”

“I am not fragile.”

“No.”

The immediate agreement softened something in Serali’s face.

Allandra continued, “Then we frame it as administrative. Lia’s recommendations affected your office schedule and field duties.”

Serali nodded slowly. “That is better. Private consultation regarding the Royal Mage’s recovery timetable and scope of duties.”

Allandra stared.

Serali looked offended. “What?”

“You just invented a Verya sentence.”

Serali frowned.

Then looked horrified. “No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Very much yes.”

“I take it back.”

“You cannot. It was effective.”

Serali groaned and pulled the blankets over her head.

Allandra laughed softly.

The sound startled her.

Not because of the humor. Because it came easily.

Serali’s muffled voice emerged from the blankets. “Do not laugh. I am undergoing legal contamination.”

“I am sorry.”

“You are not.”

“No.”

For several seconds, Allandra let herself look at her: the mound of stolen blankets, the dark hair spilling out, the woman beneath them who had just given her both permission and political cover before dawn.

Then the ache returned.

Not heat.

Something quieter.

She reached out and touched the edge of the blanket. “May I?”

Serali peeked out suspiciously. “What?”

“See you.”

A pause.

Then Serali lowered the blanket just enough to reveal her face. “You may.”

Allandra’s heart turned over.

She leaned closer and kissed Serali’s forehead.

Serali froze.

Then softened so abruptly Allandra almost kissed her again.

She did not.

Barely.

Serali opened her eyes. “That was unfair.”

“I apologize.”

“No, you don’t.”

“No.”

“Good.”

Chapter 104: Political Thoughts

Allandra drew back before the morning could dissolve entirely.

“We need to send for Mara,” she said.

Serali’s expression changed into immediate dread. “No.”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Mara already knows too much and has more discretion than either of us deserves.”

“She will look at me.”

“She often does.”

“She will know.”

Allandra tilted her head. “Serali.”

Serali narrowed her eyes.

“All of your rooms are attached to my private residence by a servants’ passage, my cloak is in your sitting room, and I did not leave last night. Mara knows.”

Serali stared.

Then fell back against the pillows with a groan. “I hate palaces.”

“I know.”

“I hate servants’ passages.”

“You like those.”

“I hate useful architecture.”

Allandra stood and found her cloak near the sitting-room chair. The room looked different now that morning had begun to enter it. Not less intimate. More incriminating.

Everly’s card still lay on the low table.

Allandra picked it up carefully.

Serali watched her from the bed. “Do not use your daughter as an excuse again.”

The words struck clean.

Allandra turned.

Serali’s expression was serious now.

Not angry.

Not soft either.

“I know you brought it because it mattered,” Serali said. “And because she asked. But also because it made it easier.”

Allandra’s throat tightened.

“Yes.”

“I don’t want to be something you only come to with an excuse.”

“No,” Allandra said. “You are not.”

“Good.”

Allandra crossed back to the bed.

Slowly.

Serali watched her approach.

“I came because I needed to tell you the truth,” Allandra said. “The card made it easier to begin. That was cowardly.”

Serali considered this.

Then said, “Moderately.”

Allandra almost laughed. “Moderately?”

“You did still knock.”

“Yes.”

“And you did tell me.”

“Yes.”

“And then several other things happened.”

Allandra’s mouth curved. “Yes.”

“So. Moderately cowardly. Improving.”

“I will try to improve further.”

“Good.”

A knock sounded at the outer door.

Both of them went still.

Mara’s voice came through, calm as ever. “Serali? Morning tray.”

Serali closed her eyes. “She knows.”

Allandra said nothing.

The door opened after the exact interval Mara always waited before entering.

She stepped in with a tray in her hands, crossed into the sitting room, and stopped.

Allandra stood beside Serali’s bedchamber door in last night’s gown. Serali was in bed with most of the blankets and the expression of a woman considering whether the floor might open if glared at hard enough.

Mara looked at Allandra.

Then at Serali.

Then at the tray.

Her face did not change.

Which was worse.

“Good morning, Majesty,” she said.

“Mara,” Allandra said.

“Serali.”

Serali pulled the blanket higher. “Mara.”

A silence.

Mara looked down at the tray. “I brought tea.”

“Very bold of you,” Serali said.

“I had formed the impression it might be needed.”

Allandra, to her credit, did not laugh.

Barely.

Serali looked as if she might expire from humiliation and spite.

Allandra stepped away from the bedchamber door and gathered herself into something more nearly queenly, though the effect was somewhat compromised by her unbound hair and the fact that her left sleeve was badly creased.

“Mara,” she said, “the official explanation is that I came last night to deliver Princess Everly’s invitation and remained to discuss Mistress Lia’s recommendations regarding the Royal Mage’s recovery timetable and scope of duties.”

Mara listened gravely.

Her eyes flicked once to Serali.

Serali stared back with the silent ferocity of a woman daring her to have facial expressions.

Mara inclined her head. “Yes, Majesty.”

“The discussion ran late,” Allandra continued, “and, given the private medical nature of the subject, no clerk was summoned.”

“Of course.”

“I will depart openly after tea. If the outer guards require explanation, that is the phrasing they may be given.”

Mara set the tray on the low table with careful hands. “Very good, Majesty.”

Serali narrowed her eyes. “You have thoughts.”

“I have tray placement concerns.”

“You have political thoughts.”

Mara straightened. “Only one.”

Allandra lifted a brow. “Go on.”

“If I may, Majesty, I would say ‘continued recovery’ rather than ‘recovery timetable.’ Timetable invites questions about delays.”

Allandra paused.

Serali pointed at Mara. “See?”

Mara looked at her. “You object to the improvement?”

“I object to how quickly you made it.”

“It is a small improvement.”

“It is a treasonous improvement.”

Allandra’s mouth curved despite herself. “Continued recovery, then.”

Mara nodded. “And perhaps ‘scope of duties’ should remain. That sounds dull enough to be protective.”

Serali groaned and pulled the blanket over her face. “Everyone in this palace is better at politics than I am before breakfast.”

“Not everyone,” Mara said. “Lord Merrow is likely awake.”

Allandra laughed.

She could not stop it.

Serali’s voice emerged from beneath the blankets. “I hate both of you.”

“Yes,” Mara said serenely. “Tea?”

Mara poured tea.

The morning, impossibly, continued.

After a few minutes, Allandra set down her cup and moved toward the outer door. She would leave openly. Calmly. The guards would see a queen departing with the composure of someone who had spent a late night discussing Princess Everly’s invitation, Mistress Lia’s recommendations, and the Royal Mage’s continued recovery and scope of duties, not someone who had learned the exact sound Serali made when kissed beneath the ear.

She could do this.

Probably.

At the door, she turned back.

Serali sat propped against the pillows, the tray balanced across her lap now, attempting dignity despite the blankets and failing only because Allandra knew what she looked like unguarded.

The bond between them rested warm and steady.

Not quiet.

Not hidden.

Settled.

Allandra lifted Everly’s card. “Breakfast?”

Serali took a bite of toast with undue aggression. “I suppose I have been summoned.”

“Invited.”

“By a spider court.”

“By a princess.”

“Same danger.”

Mara coughed delicately.

Allandra smiled.

Then, more softly, “I will see you there?”

Serali looked up.

For a moment, the room narrowed again.

Her room. Her bed. Her yes.

“You may,” Serali said.

Allandra’s composure nearly failed entirely.

Mara turned toward the fire with admirable speed.

Allandra bowed her head once, because if she tried to answer, the guards would hear something in her voice.

Then she opened the door.

The two guards outside straightened.

Their eyes did not flicker. Well-trained men. Daravan’s men.

“Good morning,” Allandra said.

“Majesty,” they answered.

She stepped into the hall and let the door close behind her.

No sneaking.

No apology.

No explanation beyond what discretion required.

Halfway down the corridor, with Serali’s warmth still in the bond and morning light gathering across the palace floors, Allandra realized she did not regret the night.

Not the door.

Not the danger.

Not even the problem now unfolding quietly around them.

She had regrets enough in her life to recognize their shape.

This was not one.

This was consequence.

And for once, consequence had followed choice rather than theft.

Allandra touched her signet ring.

Not as warning.

As memory.

Then she went to find Daravan before someone else did.
