The Queen's Mage

Chapter 146: Daughter

Verya folded the letter once. “Under diplomatic procedure, a direct royal demand must be entered into council record.”

“No,” Allandra said.

The word struck harder than anyone expected.

Even Daravan turned his head toward her.

Allandra’s face remained composed, but the bond moved under Serali’s ribs: heat, anger, protectiveness sharpened into something bright enough to burn.

Verya did not retreat.

“Majesty,” she said carefully, “if the letter is not entered, Lyehira can claim refusal of receipt. Worse, it can claim suppression of a formal grievance.”

“I am aware.”

“Then it must be read.”

Serali felt the room waiting for Allandra to forbid it.

A foolish, treacherous part of her wanted that.

Wanted Allandra to rise, tear the letter in half, burn Vulmar’s name from the air, and say no one would speak his words where Serali had built a life out of scraps and law.

But Allandra was queen.

And Serali was Royal Mage.

And the life she had built was not strong enough to survive being hidden from ink.

Serali forced her fingers to uncurl.

“Read it,” she said.

Allandra looked at her.

No one else spoke.

Serali met her gaze, and this time she did touch her left cuff.

Not distress.

Not quite.

Choice.

Allandra’s hand moved to her signet ring.

A breath.

Then she looked at Verya. “Read it into record.”

Verya inclined her head.

The senior scribe took the letter from her and moved to the standing desk near the chamber wall. His hands were steady. Serali hated him for that, briefly and unfairly.

The scribe cleared his throat.

The room braced.

“To Allandra Luina,” he read, “who styles herself Queen of Avalusia and Bearer of the Mantle—”

Daravan’s jaw tightened.

Marielle muttered, “Charming beginning.”

Verya said, “Continue.”

The scribe continued. “It has come to Our attention that a woman of Our blood, Serali of the Xuiven line, has been taken into your palace, held under guard, and compelled beneath the false dignity of foreign office.”

The words did not land all at once.

They entered Serali slowly, like cold water poured through cloth.

A woman of Our blood.

Serali of the Xuiven line.

Foreign office.

False dignity.

The table blurred at the edges.

No.

Not now.

Not here.

She fixed her eyes on the scribe’s mouth because looking at the council would be worse.

“Let there be no misunderstanding between crowns,” the scribe read, voice carrying evenly. “Serali is Our daughter, born of Night Fae blood and subject to the protection of Our house.”

Our daughter.

There it was.

The room vanished.

For one unbearable heartbeat, Serali was back beneath black vaulted ceilings, a child in a gown that did not fit, watching her father’s wife smile with all her teeth and say, His daughter? No. His mistake.

Daughter.

He had never called her that where it mattered.

Not when the soldiers dragged her from her home.

Not when she stood shivering in his hall with violet eyes and mud on her hem.

Not when Rania had her sent to the kitchens.

Not when the bruises bloomed.

Not when he planned to use her body to make a purer heir.

But now.

Now, from a safe distance, through ink and seal, in front of a foreign council, he had found the word.

A king’s daughter.

Inventory, dressed as grief.

The scribe’s voice went on.

“No title granted by Avalusia can sever blood. No oath obtained while she remains within your walls can be presumed free of coercion. No political convenience permits the taking of a king’s child and the dressing of captivity as service.”

Serali heard someone inhale sharply.

Maybe Marielle.

Maybe herself.

Captivity as service.

The words were clever enough to be his. Or Rania’s. Or some court scribe trained in making poison sound righteous.

They reached for the weakest place in the structure Allandra and Verya had built.

Was Serali free?

Free enough?

Free while guarded? Free while bonded? Free while wanting the queen who had once held her behind locked doors?

The room tightened around her.

Allandra’s hands were still on the table.

Too still.

The scribe continued, quieter now despite himself.

“We therefore demand the immediate return of Our daughter to Lyehira, unharmed in body, unbound in magic, and unmolested in dignity.”

Marielle said something under her breath that sounded like a threat against furniture.

Verya’s eyes flicked toward her.

The scribe reached the final line.

“Failure to comply will be understood as an act of aggression against the crown of Lyehira and the Xuiven line.”

Silence.

Then, with visible effort:

“By Our hand and seal, Vulmar Xuiven, King of Lyehira, Lord of the Night Crown, Keeper of the Old Blood.”

The last words entered the record.

The scribe lowered the page.

For a long moment, no one spoke.

Serali stared at the split black seal on the table.

For a long moment after the scribe finished, no one spoke.

The final words seemed to remain in the air, dark and polished and poisonous.

Vulmar Xuiven, King of Lyehira, Lord of the Night Crown, Keeper of the Old Blood.

Serali stared at the sealed parchment in the scribe’s hands.

Her father’s name had filled the council chamber.

A king’s voice, carried by ink, had reached into Allandra’s council chamber to close around the back of her neck.

Our daughter.

There it was.

The room vanished.

Only that morning, Everly had called Serali friend.

Now Vulmar answered all of it with one word. Daughter.

Not friend. Not Royal Mage. Not Serali.

Daughter.

Across the table, Lord Merrow was the first to move. His face had gone pale, then pink, then oddly triumphant in the manner of a man who had just watched disaster arrive and mistaken it for vindication.

“Well,” he said faintly. “This… changes matters.”

Allandra did not look at him.

Her face was still, her hands folded atop the council docket, her signet ring catching a hard line of sunlight.

Daravan stood behind her left shoulder like a drawn blade.

Verya looked at the scribe. “The letter has been read in full?”

“Yes, my lady.”

“Seal verified?”

“Yes, my lady.”

“Entered into preliminary diplomatic record?”

“Yes.”

This book’s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

“Good.” Verya extended one hand. “Give it to me.”

The scribe obeyed with visible relief.

Verya took the letter, scanned the page once more, and set it flat before her.

Merrow found more voice. “Lady Verya, surely if King Vulmar asserts a blood claim—”

“He asserts several things,” Verya said.

Her tone was so cool that even Merrow paused.

“Assertion is not proof,” she continued. “Proof is not ownership. Ownership is not a category Avalusian law recognizes in persons.”

Hagen leaned back in his chair, eyes bright and unreadable. “A stirring chain of distinctions.”

Verya did not look at him. “An important one.”

Merrow swallowed. “She is his daughter.”

The room shifted.

Serali felt every eye resist turning toward her and fail.

Daughter.

There it was. Smaller than Royal Mage. Smaller than Serali. A word with blood in its teeth.

Daravan spoke before Allandra could. “The Royal Mage is under crown protection.”

Merrow’s mouth tightened. “She is also the claimed daughter of a foreign king whose kingdom remains politically hostile to ours.”

“Claimed,” Verya said. “And even if the claim is proved, irrelevant to the question of surrender.”

Merrow stared. “Irrelevant?”

Verya opened the leather folder beside her and drew out a copy of Serali’s oath.

Serali knew it by sight.

The edge of the paper. The dark line where she had insisted the clerk rewrite a phrase. The small correction in Allandra’s hand where “reasonable efforts” had been replaced by actual obligation.

Verya turned one page.

Then another.

Her finger stopped.

“The oath of the Royal Mage, signed under witness and seal, states: The Crown will not return the appointee to Lyehira or surrender her to any foreign claimant without her express consent.”

The words struck the chamber differently spoken in Verya’s voice.

Not pleading.

Not personal.

Law.

Serali’s breath caught.

Verya looked up. “King Vulmar is a foreign claimant.”

Merrow’s face tightened. “He is a king.”

“Yes,” Verya said. “A foreign one.”

Hagen’s mouth curved faintly.

Marielle, who had been sitting very still since the word daughter, leaned forward. “Also, if he wished everyone to believe his paternal concern, perhaps he should not have waited until she became useful to another crown.”

The words were blunt enough to make Harrek wince.

Yvander muttered, “That part does seem poorly timed.”

Merrow turned on him. “Master Yvander.”

“What? If one of my granary clerks discovered a daughter only after she developed strategic value, I would ask questions.”

Marielle pointed at him. “Good. Hold that thought. Apply it to kings.”

Verya tapped the oath. “Whatever King Vulmar claims, Avalusia has sworn not to surrender Serali without her express consent.”

Merrow said, “An oath extracted while she was in Avalusian custody.”

Serali’s spine went rigid.

There it was.

The clever poison. The one Vulmar himself had placed in the letter.

No oath obtained while she remains within your walls can be presumed free of coercion.

Allandra’s hand moved once toward her signet ring.

She stopped herself before touching it.

Daravan noticed.

Serali noticed Daravan noticing.

Hagen noticed everyone.

Verya’s voice sharpened. “The oath was reviewed by this council. Its terms were negotiated by the Royal Mage herself, witnessed by Crown officers, and entered into record after competency demonstration. If Lord Merrow now wishes to argue that this council assisted in coercive appointment, he may say so plainly.”

Merrow recoiled. “That is not what I said.”

“No,” Marielle muttered. “But it is where your sentence was going if allowed to live.”

Serali almost laughed.

The sound died before reaching her mouth.

Allandra still had not spoken.

That frightened Serali more than anger would have.

Merrow looked toward the queen at last. “Majesty. Surely the diplomatic consequences—”

“I am aware of the diplomatic consequences,” Allandra said.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

Serali knew that tone now. It was not absence of feeling. It was feeling locked behind a gate with soldiers braced against it.

Allandra lifted her eyes to the scribe. “Prepare a formal acknowledgment of receipt. Nothing further.”

Merrow blinked. “Nothing further?”

“Not until the council has reviewed the claim, the oath, and the relevant treaty law.”

Hagen’s brows rose. “Measured.”

Allandra looked at him.

He smiled slightly. “I approve. Mostly.”

“How fortunate,” Daravan said.

Chapter 147: Entered into Record

Verya folded the oath copy and set it beside Vulmar’s letter. The two documents touched edges on the table: the king’s demand and Serali’s refusal, ink against ink.

“The response,” Verya said, “should state that Serali holds crown protection and office by consent, that she has not requested return to Lyehira, and that no surrender will be considered without her express will. We should also request evidence supporting the claimed blood relationship.”

Serali’s stomach twisted.

Evidence.

Blood could be evidence. Hair. Names. Birth records. Midwives. Her mother’s village. Cillian’s testimony, if Vulmar could force it.

Allandra’s eyes moved to her.

Only once.

A rationed glance.

A question.

Serali forced herself to breathe.

Then she stood.

The room stopped.

Daravan’s hand shifted, not toward his sword. Toward stillness. As if he could hold the room in place by refusing to move.

Verya looked at Serali, and for once, the locked cabinet did not feel locked against her.

Serali placed both hands on the table.

“I was not kidnapped,” she said.

Every face turned fully now.

No pretending otherwise.

Serali looked at Vulmar’s letter.

The seal. The ink. The name that had once decided whether she ate, slept, bled, breathed.

Then she looked at Allandra.

Not for permission.

Not for rescue.

For the truth of being seen by someone who knew what the letter had cost before anyone else did.

Allandra’s eyes held hers.

Serali turned back to the council.

“I escaped.”

The words landed cleanly.

Merrow opened his mouth.

Verya said, “Do not interrupt.”

He shut it.

Serali’s hands trembled once against the table. She pressed them flat.

“I am Serali,” she said. “I hold the office of Royal Mage by oath and consent. I am not held in this palace against my will. I do not consent to return to Lyehira. I do not recognize King Vulmar’s claim over my person.”

The scribe’s quill hovered.

Verya looked at Serali. “Do you wish that entered into record?”

Serali’s pulse beat hard in her throat.

The room waited.

Allandra did not speak.

Good.

Good, and terrible.

“Yes,” Serali said. “Write it.”

The quill scratched.

A small sound.

A permanent one.

Daravan’s voice came low and steady from behind Allandra’s chair.

“Let the record also show that the Royal Mage’s oath explicitly forbids her surrender to Lyehira or to any foreign claimant without her express consent. That consent has just been denied.”

Verya inclined her head. “So entered.”

Serali sat slowly.

Not because she was weak.

Because her legs were suddenly too far away.

Marielle reached across the table and slid a glass of water toward her without comment. No joke. No engineering metaphor.

Serali took it.

Yvander looked grim. “Will he take this as refusal?”

Verya looked at Vulmar’s letter. “It is refusal.”

Harrek’s smile had disappeared entirely. “Then the city needs to know before rumor does.”

“No,” Allandra said.

The room turned to her.

She looked first at Harrek, then Verya, then finally Serali.

“We will not let Vulmar decide how Serali is named to my people.”

Serali’s chest tightened.

Allandra continued, “The council will prepare a controlled statement if necessary. Not before. We do not answer a king’s attempt to make property of her by handing the city her bloodline as entertainment.”

Verya nodded once. “Agreed.”

Merrow looked as if he might object, thought better of it, and settled for looking deeply burdened by everyone else’s recklessness.

Hagen watched Allandra for a long moment.

Then his eyes moved to Serali.

“King Vulmar would not have written this unless he believed the value outweighed the embarrassment,” he said.

The words were cruel.

Also true.

Allandra’s gaze sharpened. “Hagen.”

Serali lifted one hand slightly.

“No,” she said. “He’s right.”

Hagen’s expression shifted, interest sharpening into something like respect.

Serali looked at the letter again.

“He spent years pretending I was an inconvenience when anyone could see me.” Her mouth tasted bitter. “If he is calling me daughter now, it is because daughter is useful.”

Marielle’s voice went flat. “Men do enjoy discovering relations at the moment of profit.”

Verya said, “We will need to determine what kind of use he expects.”

“My magic,” Serali said.

No one contradicted her.

After a moment, Daravan added, “And pressure on the queen.”

That, too, went uncontradicted.

Serali did not look at Allandra.

If she looked, she might feel the bond too clearly. Rage. Fear. Protectiveness. The old heat under the newer discipline.

She touched her left cuff.

A moment later, at the head of the table, Allandra touched her signet ring.

The movement was brief.

Almost invisible.

Daravan saw.

His jaw tightened, but he said nothing.

Verya gathered the oath and Vulmar’s letter together.

“These documents will remain sealed in council record pending formal response,” she said. “Access restricted to the sovereign, myself, Captain Daravan, the Royal Mage, and whomever the queen designates.”

“Hagen,” Allandra said.

Serali looked up despite herself.

Hagen did too.

Allandra’s face was unreadable. “You will review the diplomatic implications. Not the sealed personal testimony.”

Hagen inclined his head.

A rare flicker of something crossed his face.

Surprise, perhaps.

Or the memory that he was still, despite everything, her brother.

“As you wish,” he said.

Verya made a note. “Lord Merrow?”

Merrow stiffened.

“You will not discuss the contents of this letter outside this room.”

“I understand discretion.”

Marielle snorted.

Merrow’s face reddened. “I do.”

Verya’s voice was very soft. “Then understand this. If the Royal Mage’s bloodline reaches the noble quarter through private whisper before council has determined public response, I will consider every person present in this room a possible source. I will begin with those most likely to benefit from panic.”

Merrow went very pale.

Marielle looked delighted.

Harrek muttered, “I would rather face the harbor.”

Yvander nodded. “Same.”

Allandra stood.

The chamber rose with her.

“Council is adjourned,” she said. “Verya, Daravan, remain. Serali—”

She stopped.

Only for a fraction.

Too many eyes.

Serali felt the word that almost came through the bond.

Stay.

Allandra’s hand tightened around the docket.

“Royal Mage,” she corrected, voice steady, “you may remain if you wish.”

The choice mattered.

The room heard that too.

Serali stood.

Her body felt cold and too light, but her voice held. “I wish to remain.”

Verya set a fresh page before the scribe.

Daravan moved to close the chamber doors.

And on the table between them, King Vulmar’s letter lay beside Serali’s oath: blood claim against chosen word, father against self, demand against refusal.

For the first time in her life, the refusal had witnesses.

The words held.

Only just.

Verya set a fresh page before the scribe.

Daravan moved to close the chamber doors.

One by one, the remaining councilors filed out.

Merrow went stiffly, his expression pinched around the mouth, no doubt already composing twelve objections and eight ways to pretend he had never nearly questioned the validity of Serali’s oath. Harrek left more quietly, his shoulders set with the grim practicality of a man already imagining the city’s reaction should the wrong whisper reach the harbor. Yvander paused long enough to look at Serali as if he wanted to say something useful and, finding nothing that would not make matters worse, gave her a short nod instead.

Marielle was the last to go.

She gathered none of her papers.

That was how Serali knew she was furious.

Marielle always gathered her papers, usually while insulting the table, the chairs, or whoever had designed the room’s sight lines. This time she only stood, looked once at Vulmar’s letter, and said, “If anyone needs the wax analyzed, I will do it without damaging the original.”

Verya looked up. “No.”

“I said without damaging it.”

“No.”

“I could—”

“Lady Marielle.”

Marielle’s jaw worked. Then she looked at Serali.

The fury in her face shifted, briefly, into something more dangerous because it was kind.

“I am nearby,” she said.

Serali could not answer.

Marielle seemed to understand. She left, shutting the chamber door behind her with more care than Serali expected.

The latch clicked.

The room became too large.

Only Allandra, Daravan, Verya, Serali, and the scribe remained.

No. Hagen too, for a moment, lingering at the far end of the table because Allandra had named him for diplomatic review and he had apparently decided that meant he could remain until explicitly removed. He watched the closed door, then his sister, then Serali.

Allandra looked at him.

“Hagen.”

He lifted both hands slightly. “I am leaving.”

“Good.”

“I do know how.”

“Prove it.”

A faint smile touched his mouth, but it did not reach his eyes.

For once, he did not press.

He looked at Serali once more, and whatever he saw made the smile vanish entirely.

“Royal Mage,” he said, softer than usual.

Serali did not know what her face did.

Hagen bowed, not deeply, but correctly. Then he left as well.

The door closed again.

Silence settled.

Not the ordinary silence of a council chamber after adjournment, full of cooling tea, abandoned notes, and servants waiting to clear inkstands. This silence had weight. It pressed against the table, the sealed letter, the oath lying beside it, the fresh page in front of the scribe.

Serali sat because she had said she wished to remain, and people who wished to remain did not collapse immediately afterward.

Her hands were flat on the tabletop.

She could feel the grain of the wood beneath her palms. Smooth in some places. Nicked in others. A shallow scratch near her right thumb where someone had pressed too hard with a penknife or ring. She fixed on that scratch because it was easier than looking at Vulmar’s seal.

Black wax.

Silver thread.

Split like a beetle.

Daughter.

No.

She looked at the oath instead.

That was not much better.

The two documents lay close enough to touch. Vulmar’s demand and her refusal. Blood and ink. Father and office. Claim and clause.

The Crown will not return the appointee to Lyehira or surrender her to any foreign claimant without her express consent.

Her express consent.

She had put that there because terror had made her practical. Because even half-healed and half-starved, she had known that men like Vulmar did not need doors when law could be made into a corridor.

Now the sentence sat in front of her like a shield.

A very thin shield.

A legal shield.

She had not expected legal shields to feel so fragile.

The scribe’s quill hovered over the page.

Verya looked at him. “Leave us.”

The scribe blinked. “My lady?”

“You will wait in the outer chamber until recalled. The record is suspended for private consultation.”

He looked to Allandra.

Allandra nodded once.

The scribe bowed, gathered his ink with the care of a man relieved not to be breathing in the same room as international crisis, and left.

The door closed a third time.

Daravan remained by it.

Allandra stood at the head of the table, both hands resting on the docket, shoulders squared, expression composed.

Too composed.

Serali could feel the bond behind her own hastily closed latch, not pushing, not breaking through. Only there. Warm and furious and held at a distance by discipline so severe it almost hurt to sense.

Allandra wanted to come to her.

Serali knew that.

She wanted it so badly for one terrible second that the wanting nearly knocked the breath from her.

Then the room tilted.

Only slightly.

Enough.

Serali looked back down at the scratch in the table.

Do not faint.

Verya’s voice cut cleanly through the silence. “I recommend we make no final decisions in the next hour.”

Allandra’s gaze moved to her.

Verya folded her hands atop the oath copy. Her face had returned to legal neutrality, though now that Serali knew her better, she could see the strain at the edges. Verya looked coldest when she was angry.

This, then, was anger.

“We can acknowledge receipt,” Verya continued. “We can secure the documents, restrict access, and review treaty obligations. Anything beyond that risks reaction rather than strategy.”

Daravan nodded once. “Agreed.”

Allandra did not answer immediately.

Her eyes were on Serali.

No.

Not on.

Near.

Careful not to rest too long, not to claim in front of witnesses, not to make the room understand what was already dangerous enough.

Serali hated the care.

Loved it.

Hated that too.
