The Queen's Mage

Chapter 136: Familiar, Not Harmless

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Serali said, “Hagen said something to you.”

Allandra looked up sharply.

Serali’s expression sharpened in return. “After council. In the hall.”

“You were not close enough to hear.”

“No.”

“But?”

“But I saw your face.”

Allandra sighed.

Serali’s mouth twisted. “Also Daravan looked like he wanted to drag both of you into separate closets.”

“That is Daravan’s resting expression lately.”

“What did Hagen say?”

Allandra considered deflecting.

Then decided against it.

“He called you my knight in white armor as a shadow mage.”

Serali stared.

Then she laughed once, sharply. “That is horrifying.”

“It was a compliment.”

“Was it?”

“Mostly.”

“That is worse.”

Allandra’s mouth almost curved. “Yes.”

Serali paced to the hearth and back, clearly unable to decide whether to be amused or offended. “White armor. On me.”

“The irony was noted.”

“I do not rescue queens.”

“No?”

“No.” Serali turned back. “I make scenes. There is a difference.”

Allandra looked at her.

The answer rose before she could stop it. “Not today.”

Serali went still.

The room changed.

Allandra felt it immediately through the bond: Serali’s surprise, then discomfort, then something more fragile trying to hide behind both.

Allandra should have stopped.

She did not.

“I have been defended before,” she said.

Serali’s eyes remained fixed on her.

“My throne. My decisions. My command. My right to rule. Daravan has done it. Verya, occasionally, when the law irritated her enough. Even Hagen, once, in public, though I suspect he regretted it by evening.”

Allandra looked down at her own hands. “Not that.”

Serali’s expression softened despite herself.

Allandra hated how visible the softness was and loved it for the same reason.

“Not what Merrow was actually discussing,” Allandra said. “Not the assumption beneath it. That my grief, my body, my daughter’s legitimacy, my future pregnancies, all belonged in council so long as everyone used sufficient polish.”

Serali’s mouth tightened.

Allandra’s voice lowered. “You named it.”

“I was angry.”

“Yes.”

“I should have been more careful.”

“Perhaps.”

Serali’s eyes flickered.

Allandra stepped closer, then stopped herself with bitter discipline. “But you were not wrong.”

Serali looked away.

The bond trembled.

Allandra felt the shape of Serali’s anger still, banked and hot. Not only for Allandra. For herself. For every room where bloodline and heirs had turned a woman’s body into strategy. For the father who had intended to use her to make a purer child. For all the polished words that made atrocity sound like inheritance.

Allandra’s throat tightened.

“I am sorry,” she said.

Serali looked back. “For Merrow?”

“For all of it.”

“That is too much apology for one queen.”

“I have a large office.”

Serali almost smiled.

Almost.

Then she crossed to the desk, picked up the suitor list, and held it between two fingers. “Do you want to know who was on it?”

“No.”

“Good.”

Serali moved toward the fire.

Allandra said, “Serali.”

She stopped.

The paper hovered above the low flames.

Allandra should tell her no. Records mattered. Evidence mattered. Verya would be furious. Daravan would ask if this counted as procedural arson. Marielle would demand to know why she had not been invited.

Serali looked over her shoulder. “Do you want it preserved?”

Allandra looked at the list.

At the folded edge. At the seals. At the names of men who had become possibilities without her consent.

Then she looked at Serali.

“No,” she said.

Serali dropped it into the fire.

The paper caught slowly at first, then all at once. Wax softened, darkened, collapsed. Names curled black at the edges, then vanished into orange.

Allandra watched until nothing legible remained.

Something in her chest loosened.

Not enough.

Enough to hurt.

Serali stepped back from the hearth. “There. Air improved.”

Allandra laughed under her breath.

It became something else halfway through.

She turned away, pressing one hand to her mouth.

Serali went still.

Allandra did not cry. She rarely cried. Not because grief did not come, but because queens learned to make private weather, and Allandra’s weather had been locked behind stone for years.

Tonight, the stone cracked.

Only slightly.

Only enough for one breath to shudder.

Serali crossed the room.

Not quickly.

Not touching.

She stopped beside her, close enough that the bond warmed between them, soft and uncertain.

“Allandra.”

The name undid her more than the petition had.

Allandra lowered her hand. “I should have stopped him sooner.”

“Yes.”

The answer was blunt enough to steady her.

Serali continued, “But you have spent years being trained not to hear it as violence until it becomes impossible to ignore.”

Allandra looked at her.

Serali’s expression was severe and tender in a way Allandra had no defense against.

“That does not make it harmless,” Serali said. “It makes it familiar.”

Allandra closed her eyes.

Familiar.

Yes.

That was the shame of it. Merrow had not shocked her at first. The petition had, yes. The list. The brazenness. But the underlying claim? The idea that a queen’s body belonged to the realm? That had been woven into her education so early it had become part of the air.

Serali had not grown up breathing that particular air.

She had grown up breathing a darker version.

Enough to recognize poison at once.

Allandra opened her eyes.

“Thank you,” she said.

Serali’s mouth twisted. “Do not make me noble. I hate it.”

“You were.”

“No. I was furious.”

“One does not preclude the other.”

“It should.”

“It doesn’t.”

Serali looked away.

The bond warmed.

Allandra felt the familiar mixture beneath it now: embarrassment, reluctant pride, irritation that she could distinguish one from the other.

She smiled despite herself.

“You’re doing it again,” Serali said.

Allandra blinked. “Doing what?”

“Thinking yourself into misery.”

“I was smiling.”

“You were apologizing internally.”

“…I was.”

“I can tell.”

Allandra sighed. “The bond is becoming inconvenient.”

“It always was.”

“It wasn’t.”

“No?”

“No. I merely underestimated how observant you are.”

Serali folded her arms. “I’ve been observant for quite some time.”

“I know.”

“You’re only just beginning to notice.”

“That seems unfair.”

“It is.”

For the first time since council, Allandra laughed properly.

The sound surprised them both.

Silence settled afterward, softer than before.

The fire cracked quietly.

Outside, winter rain tapped against the tall windows.

Serali looked toward the hearth where the last edge of the suitor list had collapsed into glowing ash.

Then, without announcing the decision, she crossed to Allandra.

Not hurried.

Not hesitant.

Simply choosing.

She reached for Allandra’s hand.

Her fingers slipped between Allandra’s with easy familiarity, loose enough to leave, firm enough to stay.

Not long ago, the gesture would have stopped both their hearts.

Now it simply felt...

Right.

Allandra looked down.

“I like this,” she admitted.

“So do I.”

“You’re making remarkable progress.”

“I know.”

“You admitted it.”

“I know.”

“I should write the date down.”

Serali rolled her eyes. “Don’t become insufferable.”

“I fear it may already be too late.”

Allandra looked at her. “You know…”

“Hm?”

“I wanted to kiss you in council.”

Serali snorted. “That would have complicated procedure.”

“Slightly.”

“I imagine Veryya would have found new laws to cite.”

“Several.”

“And Daravan would have developed an entirely unprecedented headache.”

“That too.”

Serali’s smile faded into something gentler. “I know. You wanted to kiss me because you felt seen.”

The words were matter-of-fact.

Not embarrassed.

Not teasing.

Just true.

“I understand the impulse.”

The heat stirred faintly between them.

Not demanding.

Listening.

Stolen story; please report.

Serali noticed it before Allandra did.

She smiled. “Come here.”

Allandra hesitated only long enough to search her eyes.

Then she stepped closer.

The kiss was slow. Not because either of them lacked desire.

Because neither of them needed urgency.

The council room, Merrow’s petition, the burning list, they all seemed impossibly distant now.

There was only warmth.

Only the quiet certainty that neither of them had to defend anything here.

Allandra rested one hand lightly against Serali’s cheek.

Serali leaned into it with a tiny, unconscious sigh.

When they separated, Allandra stayed close enough that their foreheads almost touched.

“Still alright?”

“Yes.”

The answer came immediately.

No hesitation.

No uncertainty.

Allandra smiled. “Good.”

Serali looked suspicious. “What?”

“You’re smiling again.”

“I am allowed.”

“Dangerous.”

“I’ve been told.”

Serali glanced around the room. Then she walked to the pair of chairs near the fire. She dragged one a little closer to the hearth.

Then another.

The legs scraped softly across the carpet.

Allandra watched. “What are you doing?”

“Improving furniture.”

“I thought furniture frequently wronged you.”

“It does. This one is receiving probation.”

She gestured. “Come sit.”

Allandra obeyed.

She settled into the chair beside Serali’s.

Close enough that their knees nearly touched.

Serali reached automatically for the folded blanket draped across the back.

“You’re cold,” Allandra observed.

“I am always cold.”

“You’re sitting beside a fire.”

“I remain committed to the principle.”

Allandra accepted half the blanket when Serali wordlessly draped it over both their laps.

Neither commented on it.

Their joined hands rested beneath the wool, hidden from the room and, somehow, from the weight of the day.

The fire burned quietly.

Neither spoke for several minutes.

The silence was comfortable.

Not empty.

Finished.

At length Serali murmured, “Hagen’s metaphor was still terrible.”

Allandra laughed softly. “Yes.”

“White armor.”

“Deeply inaccurate.”

“I would look absurd.”

“I doubt that.”

Serali looked sideways at her. “That was another compliment.”

“It was.”

“You’re becoming bolder.”

“I’ve had practice.”

“With me?”

“With being honest.”

Serali looked back toward the fire. “…Keep practicing.”

Allandra felt something warm unfold inside her that had nothing to do with the heat.

She squeezed Serali’s hand once beneath the blanket.

Serali squeezed back.

Neither of them let go.

Chapter 137: Lady Veryya Chooses Peace

Serali distrusted the invitation immediately.

It arrived on a square of cream paper, delivered by a palace page who looked relieved to surrender it and flee.

Royal Mage,

Lunch. South engineering terrace. Noon.

Bring your appetite, your opinions, and no explosive magic unless previously disclosed.

—Marielle

Beneath that, in a smaller, more disciplined hand:

Lady Verya will also attend. This is not a summons.

Serali stared at the note for a long time.

Mara, who was arranging the books in Serali’s study by subject and pretending not to judge the romance titles, glanced over. “Bad news?”

“I’ve been invited to lunch.”

Mara paused. “That sounds like good news.”

“It includes Lady Marielle.”

“Then complicated news.”

“And Lady Verya.”

Mara’s brows rose. “Oh.”

“There it is.”

“There what?”

“The correct response.”

Mara set The Stag and the Star-Marked Bride on a shelf spine-in, which Serali chose to interpret as mercy. “Perhaps they want to discuss the petition.”

“Over food?”

“People often discuss things over food.”

“Dangerous things?”

“Especially those.”

Serali looked back at the note.

This is not a summons.

Verya’s hand, undoubtedly. Which meant Verya had anticipated Serali reading an invitation as an order. Which meant Verya had either become thoughtful or dangerous in a new direction.

Likely both.

“I am not going,” Serali said.

Mara took the note, read it, and handed it back. “What will you wear?”

“I just said I am not going.”

“The dark blue walking dress, then.”

“You are becoming insubordinate.”

“Yes.”

Serali went.

Mostly because refusing would make it seem as if she had been frightened by lunch, and she refused to give lunch that power.

The south engineering terrace was not, despite its name, primarily a terrace. It was a half-covered courtyard wedged between the palace’s older stonework and a newer section of reinforced glass and brass struts that Marielle had apparently bullied into existence. One side overlooked the lower roofs of Myrae, the harbor beyond glittering beneath the pale winter sun. The other opened into a workshop through enormous doors propped wide, revealing drafting tables, suspended models, pulley systems, shelves of labeled stone samples, and at least three objects Serali did not trust.

A round table had been set beneath the covered section.

Not formally. Not court-formally, at least. There was bread, cheese, fruit, herb fish, small bowls of olives, honeyed nuts, and a pitcher of chilled citrus water that someone insisted was refreshing despite the season. A discreet brass heater stood near the table, warm air spilling from its vent in steady waves that chased away the edge of the winter chill.

Serali paused.

Even in winter, Avalusia managed this.

In Lyehira, no amount of braziers would have made an open courtyard comfortable for lunch. By this point in the season the snow would already be banked against the palace walls, the wind cutting through fur and stone alike. Here, a clever engineer and a warm sea seemed to have reached some private agreement with the weather.

Three places. Three chairs. No servants lingering close enough to listen.

Verya sat in one chair, immaculate in pearl gray, a napkin folded with legal precision beside her plate.

Marielle was standing on another chair with both arms buried inside the brass heater’s open service panel.

Serali stopped.

Verya looked up. ”Royal Mage.”

”Lady Veryya.”

Marielle said, without looking around, ”If you are going to object to the seating, do it after I finish convincing this regulator to behave.”

Serali looked at Veryya.

Veryya sipped from her glass. ”Good afternoon.”

Serali glanced back at Marielle, who had one boot braced against the chair and was tightening something inside the heater with a small wrench.

”Is she meant to be inside that?”

”No,” Veryya said.

”Are you going to stop her?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”I have chosen peace for lunch.”

The heater gave a low, satisfied hum.

Warm air washed across the terrace.

Marielle nodded once, shut the brass panel with a firm click, and hopped down from the chair with deeply inappropriate agility for someone wearing court skirts.

”There,” she said. ”Now it won’t cycle every thirty-seven seconds.”

Veryya looked at the heater. ”I had not noticed that it did.”

”Exactly.”

Serali looked between them. ”Is this the lunch, or was I invited to witness maintenance?”

”Both,” Marielle said. ”Sit.”

Veryya added, ”If you wish.”

Marielle rolled her eyes. ”Yes, yes. Chairs are optional. Food less so.”

Serali sat.

Not because Marielle ordered it.

Because the olives looked good.

Marielle dropped into her own chair, reached for the bread, and said, “I assume you are wondering whether this is political.”

“Yes.”

“It is.”

Verya set down her glass. “Not entirely.”

“Mostly,” Marielle said.

“Partly.”

“Politics brought us here. Hunger sustains us.”

Verya looked at her. “That is almost something Yvander would say.”

“Don’t insult me before I eat.”

Serali took an olive. “What kind of politics?”

“The irritating kind,” Marielle said.

“All politics are irritating.”

“Good. You are learning.”

Verya’s gaze moved to Serali. “We wanted to speak with you after yesterday’s council.”

Serali stiffened despite herself.

Verya noticed.

Of course.

“This is not censure,” she said.

“Your face always looks like censure.”

Marielle snorted into her cup.

Verya blinked once. “I am told this.”

“By friends?”

“By Marielle.”

“So no.”

Marielle pointed a piece of bread at Serali. “Careful. I am excellent company.”

“You stand on chairs.”

“For shade.”

“You invited me to a terrace full of suspicious machinery.”

“For privacy.”

“You wrote ‘no explosive magic unless disclosed.’”

“For safety.”

Serali considered this. “Fine. You are consistent.”

“Thank you.”

Verya cut a slice of cheese with such precision that Serali briefly wondered if it had offended her.

“The petition,” Verya said, “was not an isolated sentiment.”

Serali’s hand stilled over the olives.

Marielle’s humor faded, though not entirely. “Merrow was foolish enough to carry it into the room. That does not mean he wrote the thought alone.”

“I know,” Serali said.

Verya’s eyes lifted. “Yes. I imagine you do.”

That could have sounded like pity.

It did not.

That helped.

Serali took the olive and ate it. “How many signed?”

“Twelve houses,” Verya said.

“Old houses?”

“Yes.”

“Cowardly houses?”

Marielle leaned back. “There is overlap.”

Verya said, “Some signed from conviction. Some from fear. Some because no one wishes to be the only house absent from a document if it becomes useful later.”

“Courageous.”

“Courtly,” Verya corrected.

Serali looked toward the harbor beyond the terrace. Sunlight scattered across the water in hard silver pieces. “And now?”

“Now several of them will claim they misunderstood the petition’s purpose,” Verya said.

Marielle picked up a plum. “One has already sent a letter saying he believed it concerned ceremonial succession review.”

“That is not a thing,” Serali said.

“No,” Verya said.

“Did he know that?”

“Probably.”

Marielle bit into the plum. “I wrote in the margin that ceremonial succession review sounds like Merrow breeding paperwork with panic.”

Verya closed her eyes.

Serali almost choked on the olive.

“You wrote that in an official margin?”

“No. Verya took the letter away before I could.”

“With reason,” Verya said.

“With cowardice,” Marielle replied.

Serali swallowed, then laughed before she could stop herself.

Both women looked at her.

Not as if the laugh surprised them.

As if they approved of it.

That was worse.

Serali reached for the citrus drink and drank to avoid whatever her face might do.

Verya waited until she set the glass down.

“Yesterday mattered,” she said.

Serali’s defenses came back at once. “Because I made Merrow look like an idiot?”

“Merrow frequently manages that without assistance.”

Marielle lifted her cup. “To Lord Merrow: self-sustaining infrastructure.”

Verya ignored her. “Yesterday mattered because you named the substance of the petition.”

Serali’s jaw tightened. “I was less than precise.”

“You were more precise than the petition.”

That landed strangely.

Verya continued, “Court language often exists to make coercion administratively tolerable. That does not mean bluntness is always useful. But sometimes it is clarifying.”

Marielle nodded. “Like opening a wall and finding rot. Everyone complains about the smell, but at least now you know why the plaster bowed.”

Serali looked at her. “Do you think entirely in architecture?”

“No. Sometimes drainage.”

“That explains a great deal.”

Marielle grinned.

Verya’s mouth did not move, but something in her eyes suggested amusement had attempted entry and been denied for procedural reasons.

Serali looked down at her plate.

She had not served herself much. A piece of bread, two olives, a slice of cheese. Food chosen for ease of exit, should lunch turn into interrogation.

Marielle noticed and shoved the platter of fish toward her.

“Eat. You cannot frighten patriarchal succession anxiety on olives alone.”

Serali stared at the platter.

Verya said, “She is correct, though I object to the sentence.”

Serali took some fish.

Mostly because refusing after that would be childish.

Also because it smelled excellent.

Marielle looked satisfied. “Good.”

Serali tasted it.

Excellent.

Of course.

This palace attacked with food almost as often as with law.

Verya folded her hands beside her plate. “Allandra receiving the Mantle has improved many things.”

Serali looked up.

Verya’s face remained composed, but the subject had shifted into something heavier.

“Not all at once,” Verya said. “Not cleanly. The realm did not wake the morning after her ascension and decide women were suddenly less decorative. But the Mantle chose her. Publicly. Irrefutably. Every old argument against a woman’s authority had to make room for the fact that the old magic itself disagreed.”

Marielle snorted. “Some men adapted by insisting Allandra was an exception so rare she proved the rule.”

“Which,” Verya said, “is one of the more tedious ways men preserve rules they dislike seeing broken.”

Serali leaned back slowly.

This was not the conversation she had expected.

She did not know what she had expected. Perhaps correction. Strategy. Warning. Maybe a dry lecture from Verya about how not to mention prized mares in council unless prepared to file supporting precedent.

Not this.

“Did things change for you?” Serali asked before she could stop herself.

Verya’s eyes rested on her.

Then, to Serali’s surprise, she answered.

“Yes.”

Marielle set down the plum core. “For all of us.”

Verya looked toward the open workshop doors. “Before Allandra, my position was considered an indulgence of the late queen. Useful, perhaps, but temporary. Men listened when they had to and revised my conclusions in private when they thought I had left the room.”

Marielle said, “They still revise mine.”

“Yes, but now you threaten to make them explain load-bearing failure in front of the queen.”

“Effective method.”

Verya’s mouth almost curved. “It is.”

Marielle leaned forward, elbows on the table. “Before Allandra, every council memorandum I submitted came back with some man’s note asking whether my concerns had been reviewed by a senior engineer.”

Serali frowned. “You are the senior engineer.”

“Yes.”

“That seems obvious.”

“It is astonishing what becomes invisible when it inconveniences inheritance.”

Verya nodded once. “Allandra changed the cost of dismissing us.”

Serali liked that phrasing.

Not made them respected. Not saved them. Changed the cost.

That sounded true.

“And yet,” Verya continued, “the old expectations remain. Beneath the table. Beneath the law. In jokes. In petitions. In the way men speak of heirs as if children arrive through strategy and women merely witness the process.”

Marielle grimaced. “A revolting image.”

“Accurate.”

“Still revolting.”

Serali looked down at her hands.

A queen chosen by the Mantle. A legal officer no longer treated as a temporary indulgence. A court engineer able to make men explain why they ignored her appendices.

Better.

Still not safe.

In Lyehira, power had not softened anything. Queens sharpened the knives men handed them. Rania had never spared Serali because womanhood made them kin. Bloodline mattered more. Use mattered most.

And yet, when Merrow had brought out that list, Serali had seen something old cross Verya’s face. Marielle’s too.

Recognition.

Not of Serali’s exact wounds.

Of the structure.

“You both backed me,” Serali said.

Marielle’s brows rose. “Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you were right,” Verya said.

“As if that is always enough.”

“No,” Verya replied. “It is not. But it is often where one should begin.”

Marielle reached for the honeyed nuts. “Also, Merrow deserved it.”

“That too,” Verya said.

Serali looked between them.

Something warm and uncomfortable shifted beneath her ribs.

Not the bond.

Worse, perhaps.

Belonging, in its smallest and least trustworthy form.

She immediately reached for sarcasm.

“So this lunch is a reward for publicly comparing the queen to livestock.”

Marielle pointed at her with a nut. “No. This lunch is an acknowledgment that you have excellent instincts and poor tactics.”

Verya said, “And that the latter can be corrected.”

Serali stared. “Is this a recruitment?”

“You are already Royal Mage,” Verya said.

“Provisional,” Serali said automatically.

Marielle groaned. “If you keep saying that, I am going to build a plaque that says Less Provisional Every Day and hang it outside your study.”

“I will burn it.”

“I will use fireproof enamel.”

“I will learn hotter fire.”

Verya set down her cup. “This is why I requested lunch be held outside.”

Serali laughed again.

This time she did not try to swallow it.

The sound moved strangely through her. It belonged nowhere familiar. Not in council, not in Lyehira, not in rooms where people had weighed her use. Here, on a terrace full of impossible machinery, beside two women who had decided, apparently without consulting Serali, that she was someone worth feeding and correcting.

Marielle shoved the honeyed nuts toward her. “Eat those too.”

Serali eyed them. “Are you always this aggressive with food?”

“Yes.”

Verya said, “She believes nourishment improves reasoning.”

“It does,” Marielle said.

“You also believe shouting improves stonework.”

“It does if the mason is ignoring me.”

Serali took a nut.

It was sticky and excellent.

She said nothing, because praising it would only encourage them.

Marielle reached for the honeyed nuts. “Still, I maintain the list should have been burned.”

Serali took a slow sip of citrus water.

Verya’s eyes narrowed.

Marielle paused with a nut halfway to her mouth. “What?”

Serali set the glass down. “It was.”

A silence.

Verya closed her eyes.

Marielle’s face lit with such violent delight that Serali almost leaned away.

“You burned it?”

“Technically, Allandra allowed me to drop it into the fire.”

Marielle slapped both hands on the table. “Excellent.”

Verya opened her eyes. “You burned the original suitor list.”

“Yes.”

“The sealed council document.”

“It was not sealed when I burned it.”

“That is not a legal distinction.”

“It felt emotionally relevant.”

Marielle shoved her chair back and stood.

Serali stiffened. “What are you doing?”

Marielle leaned across the table, seized Serali’s hand, and smacked her palm against it with a crack of enthusiasm.

Serali stared at their joined hands.

Marielle released her, beaming. “That was for all women of the realm.”

Serali looked at Verya. “Is she always like this?”

“Worse, when encouraged.”

“I feel encouraged,” Marielle said.

Verya reached calmly for her cup. “Fortunately, I made a copy before Marielle absconded with the original.”

Marielle’s face fell. “You what?”

“I made a copy.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because I know you.”

Marielle pointed at Serali. “She burned it.”

“Yes.”

“With royal permission.”

“I assume so.”

“In a hearth.”

“Most burning happens in hearths.”

“The original matters.”

“The copy preserves the evidentiary record.”

“The original has symbolic weight.”

Verya took a sip. “Had.”

Marielle leaned back in her chair, deeply wounded. “You are constitutionally incapable of enjoying anything.”

“I am enjoying your distress.”

“That is not the same.”

“It is close.”

Serali looked between them, then down at her still-tingling palm.

“Is that some sort of Sun Fae custom?”

“It is not,” Verya said.

“It should be,” Marielle said. “It has engineering merit. Direct impact, mutual force, clean report.”

“That is not how customs are made.”

“That is how better customs are made.”

Serali flexed her hand. “It was alarming.”

Marielle grinned. “You’ll improve with practice.”

Verya set down her cup. “There will be no official practice of celebratory impact gestures in council.”

“Cowardice,” Marielle said.

“Governance,” Verya corrected.

Serali picked up an olive. “Can it be both?”

Marielle pointed at her. “See? She understands.”

Verya looked at Serali for a long moment.

Then, with the faintest possible sigh, she said, “Unfortunately, she often does.”

Verya watched the city beyond the terrace for a moment. “There will be backlash.”

The warmth thinned.

Serali nodded. “From Merrow.”

“From Merrow. From the petition houses. From men who signed nothing but approved silently. From women who will resent you for saying what they have spent their lives surviving by not saying.”

That last one struck harder.

Serali looked at her.

Verya did not soften. “Do not mistake shared injury for automatic alliance.”

“I wasn’t.”

“Good.”

Marielle looked irritated, though not at Verya. “But do not mistake bitterness for truth either. Some women have paid too much to become acceptable to forgive another woman for refusing the price.”

Serali sat with that.

A breeze moved over the terrace, carrying salt and the smell of hot brass. Somewhere in the workshop, something ticked steadily.

“I didn’t do it for them,” Serali said.

“No,” Verya said.

“I did it because he was disgusting.”

“Yes.”

“And because Allandra—” Serali stopped.

Too late.

Verya noticed.

Serali looked at her plate as if the fish had become legally interesting.

Marielle, mercifully, said, “Because Her Majesty had to sit there while a man turned her future into a stud schedule.”

Serali’s shoulders eased by a fraction. “Yes.”

Verya took a slow sip of her drink.

“Defending the queen is a hazardous habit,” she said.

Serali looked up.

Verya continued, “People will admire it when convenient, resent it when effective, and question the motive when it cannot be dismissed.”

Serali’s mouth tightened. “Are you questioning it?”

“I am noting that others will.”

Marielle snorted. “Verya questions everything. It is how she says good morning.”

“I do not say good morning unless the morning has earned it.”

Serali’s laugh came out before she could stop it.

Verya looked mildly offended.

Marielle looked delighted.

“Was that a joke?” Serali asked.

“No.”

“She says that,” Marielle said.

“Was it?”

Verya’s eyes narrowed. “Perhaps.”

“Historic,” Marielle said.

Serali shook her head.

Then Verya said, more quietly, “I am saying this because if your defense of Allandra is understood only as personal devotion, it will be used against both of you.”

Serali went still.

Marielle’s expression sobered.

Verya held Serali’s gaze.

There it was.

Not accusation.

Not knowledge, exactly.

A boundary drawn near a truth and left unnamed.

Serali set down her cup. “And what should it be understood as?”

“What it was,” Verya said. “A political and moral objection to coercive dynastic expectation.”

Marielle leaned back. “And an excellent verbal bludgeoning.”

Verya’s eyes flicked to her.

Marielle shrugged. “It can be both.”

Serali looked at Verya. “You are advising me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because you are my colleague.”

The word landed so unexpectedly that Serali had no defense prepared.

Colleague.

Not prisoner. Not project. Not queen’s shadow. Not foreign mage.

Colleague.

Her throat went tight.

Marielle, either sensing danger or causing it, lifted her glass. “A deeply irritating colleague.”

Verya looked at Serali. “Promisingly irritating.”

Serali stared at them.

Then she reached for the citrus pitcher and refilled her glass with great dignity.

“I don’t know whether that is an insult or an honor.”

“Yes,” Marielle said.

Verya inclined her head. “Precisely.”

Serali took a drink.

The citrus was cold, tart, faintly sweet.

She hated how much she liked it.

“So,” Marielle said, clapping her hands once. “Now that we have established that Merrow is a fool, the old houses are cowards, and the Royal Mage has adequate instincts, I have a technical question.”

Verya sighed. “You promised no wall diagrams until after food.”

“I waited.”

“You did not.”

“I endured.”

Serali looked at the open workshop doors, where a roll of diagrams had been placed in what she now understood was not incidental proximity.

“You invited me to lunch to discuss the wall.”

“No,” Marielle said.

Verya said, “Partly.”

Marielle amended, “Partly. But also because you caused a valuable constitutional disturbance and should be fed.”

“A constitutional disturbance.”

“That is my term,” Marielle said.

“It is not a term,” Verya said.

“It is now.”

Serali looked between them and realized, with slow horror, that this lunch had not been a trap.

It had been worse.

It had been welcome.

Not soft. Not uncomplicated. Not without warning or utility or the unavoidable machinery of court.

But welcome.

Marielle rose and fetched the diagrams before Verya could stop her.

Verya looked at Serali. “You are under no obligation to remain if you are tired.”

Marielle froze with the diagrams in hand. “Yes. That. Consent. But if you do stay, I have discovered something appalling near the north gatehouse.”

Serali looked at the food still on the table. The sun on the terrace. The two women waiting with various degrees of patience and impatience.

Then she held out a hand for the first diagram.

“Show me.”

Marielle’s grin was immediate and alarming.

Verya looked resigned.

Serali leaned over the table as Marielle unrolled the map, and for the first time, the title Royal Mage did not feel only like a leash, or a shield, or a compromise signed in someone else’s ink.

It felt, almost, like a place at the table.

A difficult place.

A dangerous one.

Hers, perhaps.

For now.
