The Queen's Mage

Allandra returned to her office.

The reports still waited. So did Lia’s note, Everly’s nap law, and Serali’s breakfast invitation, bright and waiting and far too convenient.

Allandra stood over both notes for a long moment.

Then she picked up Lia’s.

Serali knows enough.

She could still wait until morning.

That would be reasonable. She might be tired. It was late. The palace was quiet. A queen appearing in her rooms at night with guilt and heat beneath her skin was precisely the sort of thing Allandra had been trying not to do.

But not going was also a choice.

Not telling Serali had felt like restraint.

Now it looked uncomfortably like control.

Allandra set Lia’s note down.

She took Everly’s card instead.

There it was: the perfect excuse.

A daughter’s letter. A breakfast invitation. Friend correspondence requiring royal hands.

She had used Everly’s cards too often this way.

Not always. Not only. The letters mattered to Everly, and Serali kept them. But Allandra knew what it meant when she accepted courier duty too quickly. She knew she had allowed the weight of folded paper to justify the path her feet already wanted.

Cowardice, wearing a child’s handwriting.

Allandra touched the edge of the card.

Then lifted it anyway.

Not as an excuse, she told herself.

No. That was not honest.

As an excuse, yes.

But also as a bridge.

She stood before the servants’ passage panel for several breaths.

There were other ways to do this.

She could send Mara.

No. Serali would know at once that Allandra had chosen distance.

She could summon Serali.

Absolutely not.

She could write.

Coward.

She could wait.

Also coward.

Allandra rested one hand against the panel.

Beyond the wall, the hidden passages ran through the palace like a second circulatory system. They connected rooms meant to remain separate. Servants had known that for centuries. Queens, perhaps, learned it more slowly.

If she went through this door, she would not go as sovereign.

No guards. No announcement. No command.

If Serali said no, she would leave.

If Serali looked at her with guilt, Allandra would not let that become agreement.

If Serali offered comfort because Allandra was suffering, Allandra would not take it as consent.

If Serali wanted her—

Allandra stopped.

The Heat answered at once, low and bright.

She closed her eyes and breathed through it.

Glass doors. Shutters. Not a siege.

Openable.

Not demand.

Weather, not command.

She opened the passage panel and stepped inside.

The corridor was narrow and dim, lit by shielded lamps set low along the wall. The stone was cold beneath her slippers. Somewhere ahead, a servant’s footsteps faded down a branching hall, then vanished. The passage smelled faintly of linen, dust, and old wood.

Allandra moved quietly.

She knew the route by repetition, by all the times she had stopped herself from taking it: past the linen stair, down the narrow steps, beyond the sealed dumbwaiter Daravan had declared cursed until proven otherwise.

Then the panel outside Serali’s wardrobe passage.

Allandra stopped before it.

Her hand hovered.

Behind the wall, Serali was there.

The bond knew. Even with the glass doors closed, even with Lia’s privacy work humming faintly beneath Allandra’s skin, some part of her recognized the shape of Serali’s nearness: shadow, warmth, irritation not yet aimed at anyone, a restless wakefulness.

Allandra almost smiled.

Then remembered why she had come.

Her hand lowered.

She did not open the panel.

Instead, she stepped back into the corridor, took the longer way around, and approached Serali’s suite from the public residence hall.

Not the hidden passage.

If she was coming to speak honestly, she should begin with a door that allowed refusal.

The guards outside Serali’s suite straightened when she appeared.

“Majesty.”

Allandra lifted one finger to her lips.

Both men went still.

She gestured for them to remain where they were, then faced the door.

For a moment, she only stood there, Everly’s card in her hand, the old heat beneath her ribs, Lia’s note in her mind, and every royal instinct insisting that uncertainty was undignified.

Allandra knocked.

No command.

A knock.

Inside, there was silence.

Then the soft sound of movement.

The door opened.

Serali stood on the other side in that dark robe she claimed to hate and wore constantly, hair loose over one shoulder, violet eyes narrowed with immediate suspicion.

She looked at Allandra.

If you come across this story on Amazon, it’s taken without permission from the author. Report it.

Then at the card.

Then back at Allandra.

“You are delivering correspondence after bedtime now?”

Allandra’s mouth almost curved.

Almost.

“Everly says breakfast is tomorrow.”

“That is usually how breakfast works.”

“She felt the invitation was time-sensitive.”

Serali’s gaze sharpened, but there was warmth underneath. “Invitation?”

Allandra held out the card.

Serali did not take it yet.

“You used the public door,” she said.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Allandra’s hand tightened on the folded card.

“Because I needed to ask to come in.”

The suspicion in Serali’s face changed.

Not vanished.

Changed.

“About the bath,” Serali said.

Allandra’s breath caught.

So Lia had told her enough indeed.

“Yes.”

Serali looked past her into the hall, at the guards pretending not to listen and succeeding badly.

Then she opened the door wider.

Not all the way.

Enough.

“Come in,” she said.

Allandra crossed the threshold.

Serali closed the door behind her.

For one moment, Allandra stood in Serali’s sitting room, warm with banked fire and lamplight, surrounded by the quiet evidence of a life being built one stubborn object at a time: maps, books, a shawl over the wrong chair, ink on the desk.

Serali faced her, arms folded, expression guarded.

But she had let her in.

Allandra looked at her and made herself begin with the truth.

“I should have told you sooner.”

For one moment, after Allandra said, “I should have told you sooner,” Serali could think only of the cards in her hand.

The first contained a crowned spider with eight careful legs and far too many knees. At the bottom, inside a crooked speech bubble, the spider announced:

I AM POLITE.

Above it, in Everly’s fierce block letters, the card read:

SERALI,

YOU SHOULD COME TO BREAKFAST TOMORROW.

ROYAL MAGES NAP AFTER FOOLISH PEOPLE, BUT BREAKFAST IS BEFORE NAPS.

THERE WILL BE TOAST.

ALSO JAM.

PLEASE COME.

The second card was worse.

Not because of the handwriting, which had improved by force of will and several backward letters.

Because it appeared to be legislation.

ROYAL MAGES MUST NAP AFTER FOOLISH PEOPLE.

FOOLISH PEOPLE MUST NOT INTERRUPT.

UNLESS THERE IS CAKE OR WALLS FALLING DOWN.

Below that, in a smaller, neater hand, someone had added:

This has not been reviewed by Lady Verya.

Serali stared at both cards.

The spider stared back with the smug authority of a creature that had apparently survived the nursery, acquired a title, and been entrusted with diplomacy.

“I have questions,” Serali said.

Allandra’s mouth almost moved. “About which part?”

“The spider. The nap law. The cake exception. The legal status of falling walls. The fact that your daughter appears to be creating statutory authority before breakfast.”

“She has been busy.”

“I see that.”

Allandra’s face changed with such immediate, visible relief that Serali almost hated her for it.

Not because the relief was wrong.

Because it was hers.

Because one sentence from Serali had loosened something in the queen’s shoulders, and Serali did not want that kind of power any more than she wanted the old kind. She did not want to become absolution. She did not want to become medicine. She did not want every dangerous thing between them softened because Allandra looked at her like pain and restraint had learned the same posture.

Serali looked back down at the closed card.

The polite spider stared up, crowned and useless.

Serali spoke carefully. “I am not pleased you waited for Lia to tell me enough to guess.”

Allandra’s relief faded.

Good.

Not because Serali wanted to hurt her.

Because relief was too easy a place to stop.

Allandra lowered her gaze. “No.”

“No?”

“No,” Allandra said. “I was going to tell you...”

Serali set Everly’s card on the table, smoothing one bent corner with her thumb. “Then tell me properly.”

Allandra went still again, but differently this time.

Serali folded her hands in her lap before they could reach for her sleeve. “Not as a confession designed to make me comfort you. Not as a report edited until it stops sounding frightening. Tell me what happened.”

For a moment, the room held only the low hush of the hearth and the soft, bright pressure of the bond between them.

Then Allandra nodded.

“All right,” she said. “Properly.”

She drew a breath.

“I was in the bath. Irian was helping with my hair. The Heat rose, and I lost regulation before I realized how quickly it had moved.” Her fingers flexed once at her sides. “The water overheated. Not warmed. Overheated. Irian had her hands in it.”

Serali’s grip tightened around Everly’s card.

Allandra’s voice remained level with obvious effort. “She pulled away quickly. Her palms reddened. No blistering, but she was frightened, and she was hurt enough that I sent her to Lia.”

The room seemed to narrow around the words.

Hands in water.

Heat answering want.

A maid’s palms reddened because Allandra had thought of Serali.

Because of Serali.

“I should have known,” Serali said.

Allandra went still. “No.”

“You almost burned a maid because of me.”

“No.”

The word cracked through the room.

Not loud.

Sharp.

Serali looked up.

Allandra stood near the hearth, not quite in its light. She had not taken off her cloak. She had not sat. She had entered, confessed one sentence, and then stopped as if the floor beyond that truth might not hold her.

“No,” Allandra said again, quieter. “That is exactly why I should have told you sooner. So you would not decide that.”

Serali’s fingers tightened around Everly’s card.

The old guilt had risen quickly. It had its own weather. Faster than lust, faster than fear. My fault. My body. My bond. My delay. She had recognized it in Lia’s infirmary and refused it there.

Refusing it here, with Allandra looking at her like that, was harder.

Serali drew a breath. “I know it was not my fault.”

Allandra’s face changed with such immediate, visible relief that Serali almost hated her for it.

Almost.

“I know it,” Serali repeated, because truth sometimes needed to be said twice before it believed itself. “I do not know that I believe it every second. But I know it.”

Allandra closed her eyes briefly.

When she opened them, she looked more tired than queenly.

That was dangerous too.

“Irian is well,” Allandra said. “Lia treated her. No blistering. I gave her tomorrow morning free.”

“Of course you did.”

“She was frightened.”

“So were you.”

Allandra’s mouth tightened.

There.

Hit.

“Allandra,” she said.

The queen looked at her.

“I am not medicine.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.”

“Because if you came here hoping I would decide the solution is to—”

“No.” Allandra’s voice cut through that faster than the first denial. “No. I came here because not telling you had become another way of deciding for you.”

Serali stopped.

The answer was too good.

Annoyingly good.

Allandra’s hands curled once at her sides, then opened. “I did not want my discomfort to become pressure. So I hid it. But hiding it did not make it disappear. It only made it something you could not answer honestly because I had not given you the truth.”

Serali looked down at the card again.

The polite spider smiled up at her with deep incompetence.

“You walked all the way around to the public door,” Serali said.

“Yes.”

“You had the passage.”

“Yes.”

“You did not use it.”

“No.”

“Because you wanted me to be able to refuse you.”

Allandra’s jaw tightened.

“Yes.”

The word should not have warmed her.

It did.

Serali hated that, then decided she was too tired to hate every inconvenient warmth. Some of them had been earned.

“Do you want me to refuse you?” she asked.

Allandra’s gaze sharpened. “No.”

Good.

Truth.

The room breathed.

Allandra continued, lower. “But I need to know you can.”

Serali nodded once.

“I can,” she said.

The words were steady.

Allandra held herself still, but Serali felt the bond move behind its glass doors, a flare of hope quickly checked.

“No,” Serali said.

Allandra went pale.

Serali realized the word had struck wrong and stepped forward before she could overthink it.

“I mean — no, you are doing the thing. The tragic thing. The I must not want anything until it has been approved by every moral authority in the realm thing.”

Allandra stared at her.

Then, to Serali’s surprise, a laugh broke through her control.

It was small. Almost wounded. But real.

“That is not what I call it,” Allandra said.

“What do you call it?”

“Restraint.”

“Of course you do.”

“It is restraint.”

“It is sometimes restraint,” Serali said. “Sometimes it is fear hiding in nicer clothes.”

Allandra’s mouth moved, not quite a smile. “You sound like Lia.”

“I know. It is horrifying.”

The almost-smile faded.

Silence settled again, but not as badly as before.
