The Queen's Mage

The shadow beneath Serali’s teacup moved first.

She did not notice.

She was halfway through Marielle’s latest report on the north wall, one elbow propped on the desk, brow furrowed at a sketch covered in arrows and increasingly emphatic annotations.

One margin read:

STONE CANNOT SIMPLY DECIDE TO BE HOLLOW.

Below it, in darker ink:

IF IT HAS, WE HAVE DIFFERENT PROBLEMS.

Reasonable.

Slightly aggressive.

Entirely Marielle.

Without looking away from the page, Serali reached for her tea.

The pool of shadow beneath the cup stretched upward before her fingers arrived, lifting the porcelain the final inch into her waiting hand.

She drank absently while reading.

Set the cup back down.

The shadow lowered it gently onto the desk before flowing back into place beneath it.

She turned the page.

Read another paragraph.

Stopped.

Very slowly, she looked at the teacup.

”...What?”

The room remained perfectly still.

She leaned forward, studying the shadow beneath the porcelain.

It lay flat against the polished wood, entirely innocent.

Serali narrowed her eyes.

”Do that again.”

Nothing happened.

”Of course.”

She reached for the cup a second time.

Again, before her fingers touched the handle, the shadow rose to meet her hand, lifting the cup with effortless precision.

Serali stared.

Very carefully, she lowered the cup.

The shadow lowered it with her.

She released the handle.

The darkness settled back beneath it as though it had never moved at all.

For a long moment, she simply watched.

Then she reached toward the pencil lying across Marielle’s report.

This time she meant to cast.

A thin ribbon of shadow slipped from beneath her sleeve, curling lazily around the pencil before drawing it across the desk.

No resistance.

No hesitation.

The pencil came to rest neatly beside her hand.

Serali picked it up.

Set it down again.

The shadow retreated without complaint.

She sat back in her chair.

That was...

different.

During the demonstration, every spell had carried the same familiar drag beneath it. The magic had answered, but only after she pushed against the invisible stiffness left behind by years of iron. Lia had once described it as asking a badly healed leg to run before it remembered how to walk.

This felt nothing like that.

Serali closed her eyes.

Not to cast.

Simply to listen.

For so long, reaching for her magic had felt like navigating a ruined city.

Collapsed passages.

Broken staircases.

Doors she remembered but could no longer open.

Every spell required careful negotiation around damage she knew by heart.

Now...

The city was still scarred.

There were places where the stone remained cracked.

Corridors that ached when she brushed too close to them.

But the roads connected.

The fractures no longer defined the landscape.

Magic flowed through it again, quietly and steadily, finding paths that had been blocked for more than a century.

It felt...

Whole.

Not stronger.

Not larger.

Familiar.

Serali opened her eyes.

”Oh.”

The word escaped before she could think of a better one.

She rested both hands on the desk.

The room seemed unusually peaceful.

Late afternoon sunlight spilled through the tall windows, warming one side of the study while the opposite wall rested in cool shade. Dust drifted lazily through the golden beams.

The shadows gathered there shifted almost lazily, stretching toward her feet.

Not at her command.

Simply...

Aware.

One thin tendril wandered across the rug, climbed the leg of the desk, and curled around the stack of well-worn romance novels she kept insisting she would stop reading.

It nudged the top volume toward her.

Half an inch.

Serali stared at it.

”...Don’t encourage bad decisions.”

The shadow froze.

Then, with what looked suspiciously like wounded dignity, it withdrew a few inches.

Only to push the book forward again.

Serali exhaled through her nose.

”Traitor.”

The shadow gave no indication it regretted its actions.

A knock sounded at the door.

Three measured taps.

Mara.

”You may.”

Mara entered carrying a fresh pot of tea before stopping just inside the doorway.

Her eyes swept the room automatically.

Then paused.

”...Have you been practicing?”

Serali blinked.

”I don’t think so.”

Mara looked unconvinced.

”The shadows are moving.”

Serali followed her gaze.

The long shadows cast by the bookshelves had begun to drift almost imperceptibly across the floor, weaving around chair legs and table corners with slow, fluid purpose. One had climbed halfway up the hearth before settling again.

They looked...

Comfortable.

As though the room belonged to them.

Serali frowned.

”I didn’t tell them to.”

Mara looked from the shadows to Serali.

Then back again.

Neither spoke for several moments.

Finally Mara said, with the careful tone of someone approaching an unfamiliar animal,

”I think we should ask Mistress Lia to have a look.”

Serali looked down at the shadow resting quietly around the leg of her chair.

For the first time in longer than she cared to remember...

It did not feel like something she was forcing to obey.

It felt like coming home.

Lia arrived with considerably less urgency than Mara had expected.

She stepped into the study carrying her leather case, glanced once around the room, and said, ”No one appears to be on fire.”

”We don’t usually catch fire,” Serali said.

”I know. It remains one of your more admirable qualities.”

Lia set her case on the desk before looking toward the shadows pooled beneath the bookshelves.

They had settled again.

Mostly.

One still lingered around the leg of Serali’s chair, swaying faintly despite the still air.

Lia noticed immediately.

”So,” she said. ”Show me.”

Serali demonstrated with the teacup first.

The shadow rose before she consciously reached for it, lifting the porcelain smoothly into her waiting hand.

Then the pencil.

Then a loose sheet of parchment.

Each time, the shadow anticipated the movement a heartbeat before Serali consciously directed it.

Lia watched without interrupting.

When Serali finished, the healer remained silent for several moments.

”Again,” she said.

Serali repeated the exercise.

This time Lia wasn’t watching the objects.

She was watching Serali.

Her eyes tracked the smallest shifts in breathing, shoulders, fingertips.

Finally she stepped closer.

”Cast nothing.”

Serali frowned.

”...Nothing?”

”Nothing.”

Serali folded her hands together.

The room became still.

For perhaps ten seconds, nothing happened.

Then a ribbon of shadow slowly detached itself from beneath the desk.

It wandered across the rug with no apparent destination before curling loosely around one chair leg.

Lia sighed.

”There it is.”

Serali looked down.

”I wasn’t—”

”I know.”

The shadow remained where it was, drifting lazily back and forth like seaweed beneath clear water.

”I wasn’t doing anything.”

”No.”

Lia crouched beside it.

”That’s rather the point.”

She held out one finger.

The shadow flowed around it without touching.

Curious.

Not aggressive.

Simply...

Present.

Lia stood again.

”How long?”

”I only noticed today.”

”No.”

Lia looked at her over the top of her reading spectacles.

”How long have the shadows been doing things you did not explicitly ask them to do?”

Serali opened her mouth.

Closed it again.

”...I don’t know.”

She thought.

The bedroom.

The lamps.

The little thread that had pulled a blanket higher one evening while she was reading.

The shadows gathering around the bed without being called.

She had assumed...

No.

She had not assumed anything.

She simply hadn’t questioned it.

”A week,” she admitted.

”...Perhaps a little longer.”

Lia nodded slowly.

”I thought as much.”

Serali looked at her sharply.

”You’ve seen this before?”

Lia watched the ribbon of shadow drift lazily across the rug before dissolving beneath the bookshelf.

She remained silent for several heartbeats.

Finally, she said, ”I have seen something similar.”

Serali looked up. ”Similar?”

Lia nodded slowly. ”Not often.”

She considered her words. ”Twice, I believe.”

”Both were during the Border Wars.”

Serali frowned.

”You’ve seen Shadow Fae do this?”

”I’ve seen gifted affinity mages do this.”

Lia rested one hand against the desk.

”One was a Shadow Fae officer. The other...” She smiled faintly. ”A Sun Fae child who was considerably less aware of the consequences.”

Mara tilted her head.

”What happened?”

”The nursery staff learned not to wake her abruptly.”

”...Why?”

Lia’s smile widened.

”She accidentally filled the room with enough sunlight to leave half the household seeing spots for the better part of an afternoon.”

Serali couldn’t help the small laugh that escaped her.

Lia shrugged.

”Children rarely possess much distinction between instinct and intention.”

She looked back toward the shadows.

”Neither, it seems, do exceptionally powerful affinity mages.”

Serali looked down.

The shadow around the chair leg shifted almost lazily.

Something about the sight tugged unexpectedly at an old memory. ”...Cillian.”

Lia looked at her.

”My brother.”

Serali continued watching the shadow.

”I used to think...” She shook her head. ”No. I thought I imagined it.”

”What?”

”When he read...” A small smile touched her face before she noticed it. ”The shadows would gather beneath his chair before the sun reached him.”

Another memory surfaced.

”He was forever pushing his hair behind his ears.”

She frowned.

”Or...”

”No.”

Her smile grew slightly. ”He wasn’t.”

She remembered sitting quietly outside one of the palace libraries, waiting for him to finish a lesson.

His head bent over a book.

Dark hair falling into his eyes.

The shadows had lifted almost imperceptibly, brushing the strands aside before settling again.

Cillian had never reacted.

He’d simply kept reading.

”I thought I was making stories out of nothing.”

Lia’s expression softened.

”I rather doubt you were.”

Lia crouched, studying the shadow still circling the chair.

”I can’t tell you precisely why this happens.”

She looked up.

”There are scholars who have spent entire lifetimes arguing over it. My understanding is... limited.”

She smiled apologetically.

”I mend people. I don’t generally interview them about unusually sophisticated magical theory while they’re bleeding.”

That earned a quiet snort from Mara.

”But...”

Lia’s expression grew thoughtful.

”The prevailing belief, at least among Sun Fae healers, is that conscious spellcasting is only one way magic expresses itself.”

She gestured toward the floor.

”When an affinity becomes deeply integrated with its bearer, the distinction between thought, instinct, and casting becomes... less rigid.”

”So it’s casting itself?”

”Not exactly.”

Lia shook her head. ”It is still your magic. It simply responds to parts of you that haven’t yet become conscious decisions.”

Serali looked unconvinced. ”That sounds useful.”

”It can be.”

Lia’s voice became more serious. ”It can also become inconvenient.”

”Inconvenient?”

”The Luina family provides excellent examples.”

Mara blinked. ”The royal family?”

”Hm.”

Lia nodded. ”Queen Allandra once reduced three tutors to tears.”

Serali stared. ”...She did?”

”Entirely by accident. The lessons had gone rather poorly.”

”And?”

”And every window in the classroom suddenly admitted enough direct sunlight that no one could keep their eyes open.”

Mara covered her mouth.

Lia continued with the unmistakable air of someone remembering a very old story. ”Prince Hagen was worse.”

”He developed an unfortunate tendency to flare whenever he became excited.”

”I distinctly remember a footman walking into a corridor and immediately deciding he’d much rather be somewhere darker.”

Serali laughed.

”I cannot imagine him admitting that.”

”He did not. He insisted someone had polished the marble incorrectly.”

That got a genuine laugh from both women.

Lia let it settle before her expression became thoughtful again.

She met Serali’s eyes.

”Your magic has been growing stronger ever since your demonstration. You’ve simply been using it a little more each day, so the change never felt dramatic.”

”And now?”

”I think you’ve reached a point where your affinity is beginning to remember how it behaved before it was forced into rigid control.”

She watched another shadow drift lazily across the floor.

”It no longer waits for you to consciously construct every spell.”

She gestured toward the wandering shadows.

”Unintentional magic rarely distinguishes between a passing emotion and a deliberate decision. If you’re startled, your magic may react before you’ve chosen how.”

”If you’re frightened...” She let the sentence trail off. ”...or protective.”

Serali looked down at the shadows around her chair. ”They’ll simply do what I wanted them to do.”

Lia smiled faintly.

”What some part of you wanted them to do. Those are not always the same thing. Unconscious magic reflects unconscious emotion.”

”It protects. It comforts. It reaches.”

”It also startles, embarrasses, and occasionally causes diplomatic incidents.”

Her gaze returned to the shadow winding around Serali’s chair.

”I think your recovery has reached the point where your magic is remembering how to be instinctive.”

She met Serali’s eyes.

”That is a very good sign.”

A beat.

”It is also something we should help you learn to control before your subconscious decides to introduce itself to the palace.”
