The Queen's Mage

Chapter 128: Unfiltered Wonder

Black and gold stretched above Serali like the ribs of some vast cathedral made of night and sunlight.

No one moved.

Marielle’s pencil slipped from her fingers.

It struck the stone beside her boot.

She did not look down.

Lia had risen beneath the awning.

Mara stood beside her with Serali’s coat still folded over one arm, her face composed except for the way her fingers had tightened in the wool.

Hagen stared upward.

For once, there was no easy amusement in his expression.

Only wonder.

Daravan slowly lowered his training blade.

“Royal Mage,” he said carefully.

Serali could not answer.

The lattice moved through her.

Not power added to her own.

Not Allandra’s strength poured into her.

Resonance. Her shadows had not grown because the sunlight fed them.

They had become more completely themselves. Sharper where the light defined their edges. Deeper where the gold passed beside them.

Across the yard, Allandra’s sunlight brightened in answer, each strand burning clearer where Serali’s shadows gave it shape.

Something beneath the bond recognized the balance.

Something old.

Something neither of them understood.

The lattice pulsed a second time.

Beyond the low garden wall, the frost cloth snapped upward as though caught by a sudden wind.

Everyone turned.

The bare rose canes shuddered beneath it.

The first bud appeared near the base of the wall.

Small. Red. Impossible.

It swelled and opened before Serali’s eyes.

Another followed.

Then another.

All along the winter-dead line of thorn, buds thrust from bare wood and burst into bloom. Red roses opened first, deep as fresh blood against the snow-pale straw. Gold followed between them, petals unfurling in a rushing wave beneath the black-and-gold light.

Steam rose from the garden beds.

Frost melted from the stone edging in a glittering line.

The scent reached the yard a moment later.

Warm earth.

Green leaves.

Roses blooming in the heart of winter.

For one stunned heartbeat, no one spoke.

Then Yvander said from the upper gallery, “That cannot be good for the pruning schedule.”

The lattice vanished.

Not gradually.

One instant it arched above the yard. The next, sunlight and shadow collapsed into nothing.

The sudden absence struck Serali harder than the magic had.

Her knees nearly gave.

Daravan moved first.

He reached toward her, stopped before touching, and shifted close enough to catch her if she fell.

Lia was already crossing the yard. “Everyone still.”

The command cracked through the silence.

Every guard obeyed. Even Hagen stopped halfway through a step.

Allandra did not. She crossed the yard with her attention fixed entirely on Serali.

Daravan turned his head. “Majesty.”

Allandra stopped.

The effort of it ran through the open bond like a physical strain.

Serali felt her concern. Her fear. The instinct to close the remaining distance.

She also felt Allandra master it.

One breath.

Then another.

The queen remained outside the circle.

Serali hated how relieved that made her.

She hated even more that some reckless part of her wanted Allandra to ignore Daravan, Lia, the staring guards, and every careful rule they had built between them.

Lia reached Serali first. “Pain?”

“No.”

The answer came automatically.

Lia’s gaze sharpened. “Truth.”

Serali drew a careful breath.

Her ribs did not ache.

Her head did not spin.

Her affinity had settled beneath her skin, alert but no longer surging.

“No pain.”

“Numbness?”

“No.”

“Pressure beneath the ribs?”

“Not the old kind.”

Lia glanced toward Allandra.

Allandra had gone utterly still.

Lia looked back at Serali. “What kind?”

Serali searched for words. “Like being struck by something that did not hurt.”

“That is not reassuring.”

“It was too much,” Serali admitted. “But not damaging. I don’t think.”

“You do not get to determine that yet.”

“Of course not.”

Lia reached for Serali’s wrist.

Serali gave it to her.

Only then did she realize the bond was still open.

Allandra’s emotions pressed at the edge of her awareness, bright and immediate. Fear held under discipline. Awe. A fierce, almost painful pride. Questions gathering too quickly to separate.

And beneath all of it, warmth.

Serali pictured the door.

For one moment, it refused to move.

The latch had not broken. It simply seemed to have forgotten that it had ever been closed.

She breathed.

Her side.

Allandra’s side.

The door between.

The distinction mattered.

The latch slid into place. The world quieted. Not entirely.

Allandra remained present at the edge of Serali’s awareness, but the flood of emotion receded.

Across the yard, Allandra’s shoulders lowered by a fraction.

Daravan noticed.

His eyes moved from Allandra to Serali and back again.

He said nothing.

Hagen did.

“What,” he asked slowly, “was that?”

Marielle bent, picked up her fallen pencil, and stared at it as though she had never seen one before.

Then she looked toward the fused ring in the sand.

Her lips parted.

No sound came out.

Serali stared at her.

That was considerably more alarming than the lattice.

“Marielle?”

Marielle raised one finger.

Serali waited.

Marielle lowered it. Then raised it again.

Daravan looked toward Lia. “Should we be concerned?”

“I am not qualified to treat this particular symptom.”

Marielle finally drew breath.

“Oh,” she whispered.

Serali closed her eyes. “No.”

“I only said oh.”

“You said it like that.”

Marielle looked from the dark ring edged in gold to the winter roses, then to Serali and Allandra.

Her eyes filled.

Serali opened hers again. “Are you crying?”

“No.”

“You are.”

“I am experiencing scientific emotion.”

“That is crying.”

“No,” Marielle said thickly. “Crying is less useful.”

Marielle took one steadying breath.

Then another.

When she spoke again, her voice had regained its usual brisk precision.

”...I don’t have a model for this.”

No one answered.

She walked toward the fused ring, stopped just short of it, and crouched. ”The affinities merged.”

Daravan folded his arms. ”That seems difficult to dispute.”

”They shouldn’t.” Marielle looked up at him. ”Shadow and sunlight are incompatible expressions. They should interfere with one another.”

”They rather obviously did not.”

”I mean theoretically.”

”I gathered.”

Marielle looked back at the ring. ”Either the spell structures became compatible...”

She looked toward the roses blooming against the wall.

”...or something altered the way the affinities interacted.”

She frowned. ”No.”

A pause.

”No, that doesn’t work either.”

She looked from Serali—

—to Allandra—

—and back again.

”Shared defensive intent?”

Silence.

”Sympathetic resonance?”

Another silence.

”No...”

She rubbed absently at her forehead.

”I do not currently possess a hypothesis that survives contact with the evidence.”

Yvander leaned over the gallery railing. ”So...”

Marielle looked up.

”...how expensive is not having a hypothesis?”

She stared at him. ”Priceless.”

”That generally means very expensive.”

”It means priceless.”

”Which means I cannot budget for it.”

”No one is budgeting for impossible magical phenomena.”

Daravan bent to retrieve his practice blade. ”No.”

Marielle blinked. ”I haven’t asked anything.”

”You were about to request another trial.”

”...Perhaps.”

”No.”

”Captain—”

”No.”

”It was scientifically justified.”

”It absolutely was not.”

Lia looked toward Allandra. ”Majesty.”

Allandra stepped closer, but still stopped outside arm’s reach.

Good.

Serali hated that it was good.

She also hated that some reckless part of her wanted Allandra to ignore every lesson Lia had ever taught and close the distance anyway.

Allandra’s voice was quiet. ”That wasn’t intentional.”

Serali looked up.

”Your sunlight?”

”Yes.”

”My shadow wasn’t either.”

”I know.”

Marielle looked between them again. ”...Did either of you consciously alter your casting?”

”No,” Serali and Allandra answered together.

Marielle frowned harder. ”...Well.”

She looked back at the ring. ”I liked my understanding of magic better this morning.”

Serali looked toward the fused ring in the sand.

Her shadow had not changed.

Neither had Allandra’s sunlight.

Alone, they remained what they had always been.

Together...

Together they had become something neither of them recognized.

That thought should have frightened her.

It did.

It also made her want to understand.

Hagen looked to his sister.

The sunlight had faded.

The shadows had withdrawn.

The roses remained.

Allandra wasn’t looking at them.

She was looking at Serali.

There was wonder in her expression.

Unfiltered.

Unburdened.

For a single impossible heartbeat, she looked like the sister he’d grown up with. Before the Hall of First Light, before the funerals, before the weight of gold and law had settled across her shoulders and never truly left.

Simply...

Allandra.

His chest tightened.

There you are.

He hadn’t realized how completely he’d missed seeing her like that until it returned.

His gaze shifted to Serali.

The Royal Mage still stared at the fading lattice, her usual reserve entirely forgotten.

He liked her.

More than he’d expected to.

She was clever. Braver than she gave herself credit for. Kind in ways she seemed almost embarrassed by.

She laughed more now than she had when she’d first arrived.

The palace was becoming home.

And that was exactly what worried him.

Because Serali wasn’t simply a refugee.

She was a Xuiven. A Lyehiran noble, most likely. A Shadow affinity mage.

Now the Royal Mage of Avalusia.

Vulmar would never allow that to pass unanswered.

Not necessarily because he wanted Serali. Because he would see what she represented.

Every appointment made by a crown was a message.

Every public honor, a declaration.

Sooner or later, a letter would come.

Perhaps diplomats.

Perhaps demands.

Perhaps something worse.

He didn’t know.

He only knew Vulmar would answer.

His eyes returned to Allandra.

She was still smiling.

The sight made something inside him ache.

Serali adjusted the cuff on her left sleeve.

A small movement.

Allandra’s thumb brushed the signet ring on her right hand.

Hagen watched the tiny exchange.

It lasted less than a heartbeat. He had no idea what it meant.

He was becoming increasingly certain that it meant something. And, for reasons he could not yet name, that unsettled him more than the impossible lattice had.

Please, he thought.

Whatever this is...

Let her have it for a little while.

He wished, with a sudden and painful clarity, that he believed the world was kind enough to grant her that.

He didn’t.

Chapter 129: Considering Saying Yes

Three days after the impossible happened, palace life resumed with the determined efficiency of people who had collectively decided not to ask too many questions.

The roses continued blooming.

The reports did not.

Verya’s official account described the incident as an unexpected affinity interaction during a routine magical assessment.

Marielle complained daily that history deserved better wording.

Veryya replied, with equal consistency, that history was welcome to submit revisions through the proper legal channels.

No one had yet explained the roses.

No one had tried particularly hard.

Marielle, meanwhile, had developed hypotheses.

This would have been less concerning had she chosen one.

Instead, she produced a new theory approximately every six hours.

Shared resonance. Mutual spell harmonics. Environmental affinity convergence.

Something involving defensive intent. Something involving pearl powder.

One particularly elaborate model involving migratory birds that she withdrew before lunch after deciding the birds had contributed very little.

Every theory ended the same way.

”...No.”

A pause.

”...That still doesn’t work.”

Then she would look at Serali with an expression suggesting reality had committed a personal offense.

Lia had forbidden further testing.

Daravan had forbidden Marielle from requesting further testing.

Marielle had interpreted this as permission to ask questions instead.

Serali had answered the first twenty-three.

By the twenty-fourth, she had begun replying with, ”I don’t know, Marielle.”

This had not discouraged her.

Apparently ”I don’t know” merely counted as additional data.

Unfortunately, winter had also decided to participate.

The cold settled deeper into the palace each morning.

The wind found every crack in every old stone corridor.

And Serali’s left shoulder had apparently developed an opinion about cold weather.

Lia called it inflammation of the old injury.

Serali called it betrayal.

Neither description improved it.

So, by the time Serali returned from the west reception hall after a particularly grueling state dinner, her left shoulder had become a legal adversary.

It had begun as a dull ache during the second hour of Lord Merrow’s cousin explaining, at length, why the seating arrangements for the winter donor supper implied either favoritism or insult depending on whether one counted widowed aunts by bloodline or marriage. By the third hour, the ache had sharpened. By the fourth, it had climbed into the side of Serali’s neck, wrapped itself around the base of her skull, and filed a formal complaint against her continued existence.

She had not shown it.

Obviously.

She had stood where she was supposed to stand. She had nodded when nodding was required. She had allowed three people to praise her smoke-blue gown with enough caution to make clear they were really praising Allandra for permitting her to wear it. She had answered two questions about shadow magic, one about Lyehiran weather, and one truly unforgivable question about whether Night Fae preferred underground rooms.

She had not thrown anything.

A triumph, by any fair metric.

When she entered her suite, the room was already warm.

Mara had drawn the curtains against the winter-dark windows and lit the lamps low. A tray sat on the hearth table: tea, bread, sliced pears, a small bowl of spiced nuts, and the bitter tonic Lia sent whenever Serali had endured more than two hours of nobles pretending curiosity was not inspection.

The bedroom door stood open.

Beyond it, steam curled faintly from the bathing room.

Serali stopped in the sitting room and stared at it.

“No,” she said.

Mara emerged from the bathing room carrying a folded towel. “Good evening.”

“No.”

“You say that often.”

“Because you do things.”

“I prepared a bath.”

“I can see that.”

“You usually appreciate baths after court functions.”

“I appreciate baths when I decide they are happening.”

“You mentioned your shoulder this morning.”

“I said it was stiff.”

“You said, ‘If one more person asks whether shadows feel cold, I will let my shoulder detach and hit them with it.’”

“That was metaphor.”

“It was also medical information.”

Serali narrowed her eyes. “You have been speaking to Lia.”

“Yes.”

“Collusion.”

“Care.”

“Same structure.”

Mara’s mouth twitched, but her eyes had already moved over Serali in that quiet, dangerous way: hair slightly loosened, jaw tight, one shoulder held lower than the other, left hand tucked too close to her side. Mara saw everything. Worse, she remembered what she saw and built routines around it.

Serali hated that.

No, she did not.

She hated that she did not.

Mara crossed the room and set the towel near the hearth. “Do you need help with the gown?”

“No.”

Mara waited.

The gown in question was formal enough for court functions and designed by Callenne with all the practical accommodations Serali had grudgingly approved. Side fastenings. Larger hooks. No cruel wrist buttons. In theory, Serali could remove it herself.

In practice, the left shoulder currently wished to secede from her body.

Serali reached for the side hooks.

Pain snapped down her arm.

She did not hiss.

She did not.

She simply stopped moving, which was different.

Mara’s expression did not change.

That was kind of her.

“Serali,” she said.

“I know.”

“May I?”

Serali closed her eyes.

The question was simple. Familiar now. It should have become easier.

Some days, it did.

Tonight, after four hours of being looked at by people who wanted her to be either spectacle or scandal, her skin felt borrowed. Every point of contact imagined before it happened. Every possible hand already too close.

But this was Mara.

Mara who knocked. Mara who asked. Mara who had learned exactly when not to touch. Mara who could lace a gown without making Serali feel trapped inside it. Mara who arranged her room into quiet after every long day at court. Mara who had turned Everly’s cards into an archive because Serali could not admit they mattered.

Serali opened her eyes.

“Yes,” she said.

Mara stepped behind her.

Slowly enough that Serali could track every movement, quickly enough not to make ceremony of it. Her fingers worked the side hooks with practiced care, never brushing skin where fabric allowed distance. The gown loosened. Air touched the back of Serali’s neck. The weight of court slid from her shoulders by degrees.

When Mara lifted the gown away, Serali’s shoulder throbbed in angry gratitude.

Mara said nothing about the way Serali’s breath caught.

Good woman.

“The bath is plain hot water,” Mara said, carrying the gown to the screen. “No poppy, no willowbark. I brought the salts out but did not add them.”

Serali looked toward the bathing room.

“You staged the salts visibly?”

“Yes.”

“So I would know.”

“Yes.”

“That is manipulative.”

“It is transparent.”

“Transparent manipulation is still manipulation.”

“Would you like to inspect them?”

Serali almost said no on principle.

Then, because principle had made many poor contributions to her life, she said, “Yes.”

Mara brought the small ceramic jar to the hearth table and opened it.

The scent rose first: rosemary, mineral salt, lavender, something sharp and clean underneath.

Serali took the jar, sniffed, and immediately recoiled. “That smells medicinal.”

“It is.”

“I prefer poisons that try harder to lie.”

“It is not poison.”

“That is what poison wants people to think.”

Mara’s mouth curved. “Lia made it.”

“Lia is capable of poison.”

“Yes.”

“See?”

“It is for muscle soreness. A half spoon only.”

“Why half?”

“Because you complain when the bath smells like a garden being punished.”

Serali paused. “That sounds like me.”

“Yes.”

She handed the jar back.

Mara did not move toward the bathing room yet. “There is something else.”

Serali’s eyes narrowed. “That phrase has never improved a night.”

“You are holding your shoulder as if moving it hurts.”

“It does not.”

Mara looked at her.

Serali sighed. “It does.”

“The bath will help.”

“Good.”

“I could also massage the muscle.”

The room went still.

Not dramatically. No candles flared. No bond stirred. No old magic threw open a door. Stillness, ordinary and much worse.

Mara held the jar in both hands, expression calm but careful.

Serali stared at her. “What?”

“A massage,” Mara said.

“I know the word.”

“I would use the salts and oil after you are in the bath. Only your shoulder and neck. Only if you want. You can say stop at any time.”

Serali’s arms folded before she decided to fold them.

Her shoulder objected.

She ignored it.

She had kissed Allandra. She had allowed Allandra to touch her.

That had been terrifying.

This was different.

There was no bond to soften the edges.

No desire to drown out instinct.

No desperate certainty that, somehow, she wanted this despite everything.

There was only Mara.

Kind. Patient. Entirely safe.

And Serali’s body, stubbornly insisting that safety and fear had never been the same thing.

“No.”

Mara nodded immediately. “All right.”

That should have ended it.

It did end it.

Mara turned toward the bathing room.

Serali remained where she was, jaw tight, shoulder screaming, no sitting in the middle of her chest like a familiar knife.

No had worked.

Mara had stopped.

Good.

Good.

So why did she feel as if she had lost something?

Serali looked at the steam curling through the open bathing-room door. Warm water. Salts. Low lamps. No court. No eyes. No men asking whether her magic felt cold. No queen there to make wanting complicated. No one but Mara, who had offered and accepted refusal without injury.

Her body still hurt.

That was one truth.

Another: she did not want to be afraid of every hand forever.

That was an inconvenient truth. Worse, a sentimental one. It sounded like something Mara would not say but would quietly arrange towels around until Serali discovered it herself.

Mara paused at the threshold, perhaps hearing the silence change.

She did not turn.

Serali hated her for that too. For allowing space to become a choice rather than pressure.

“Mara.”

“Yes?”

“I said no.”

“Yes.”

Serali looked down at her own hands.

They were steady.

Her shoulder was not.

“I am considering saying something else.”

Mara turned then, slowly. “All right.”

“Do not look hopeful.”

“I will not.”

“You are already doing it internally.”

“Perhaps.”

Serali exhaled through her nose. “I have never had a massage.”

Mara’s face softened.

Too much.

Serali pointed at her. “No.”

Mara corrected herself at once. “Thank you for telling me.”

“That is better.”

“I would explain everything before I did it.”

“Good.”

“And you could tell me exactly where not to touch.”

“Also good.”

“And if you changed your mind after one second, I would stop.”

“I know.”

The words surprised them both.

Serali looked away first.

The fire popped softly in the hearth.

She did know.

Not perfectly. Not without fear. But enough.

Mara would stop.

Allandra would stop.

Lia would stop.

The list of people who would stop had become longer than Serali once believed possible.

Perhaps that was what safety was. Not the absence of fear. The presence of people who heard no and made it true.

Serali swallowed. “I do not want to be afraid of being touched forever.”

Mara’s expression changed again, but this time she did not let softness spill everywhere.

She only nodded.

“No,” Serali amended sharply. “That sounded like a dramatic declaration. It is not. I also want my shoulder to stop trying to kill me.”

“Of course.”

“And if I hate it, I will say stop.”

“Yes.”

“And you will not look disappointed.”

“I will not be disappointed.”

“You might be.”

“I might be sorry you are still in pain,” Mara said. “That is different.”

Serali considered this.

Annoyingly precise.

“Fine.”

Mara nodded once. “Fine?”

“Yes. You may.”

Mara’s breath moved.

Only a little.

She set the salts beside the bath.

Serali went behind the screen and undressed the rest of the way herself. Slowly. Angrily. With several pauses when her shoulder objected. Mara stayed on the other side of the screen and kept busy with ordinary sounds: uncorking oil, moving towels, stirring water, placing something ceramic on the bath ledge.

No staring. No hovering.
