The Queen's Mage

Chapter 138: Winter’s End

Winter did not end all at once in Avalusia.

Serali kept expecting it to.

In Lyehira, the seasons arrived like military campaigns. Autumn surrendered. Winter occupied. Snow banked against the palace walls, ice sealed the fountains, and the wind found every weakness in stone, shutters, fur, and bone. Spring came violently when it came at all, flooding the lower streets with meltwater and turning the palace courtyards into gray slush.

Avalusia preferred negotiation.

The mornings brightened by degrees.

The wind off the sea lost a little of its bite. Frost still silvered the palace roofs at dawn, but it vanished before midday. Gardeners appeared with pruning shears instead of salt buckets. Servants began carrying half-finished lantern frames through the corridors in preparation for First Sun.

Nothing declared winter defeated.

The kingdom simply began behaving as if it expected warmth to return.

Serali found herself doing the same.

Weeks passed after Merrow’s petition.

Not many.

Enough.

Enough for the court’s outrage to cool into correspondence.

Enough for the old houses to decide they had never supported the petition quite as enthusiastically as their seals suggested.

Enough for Merrow to return to council with his dignity repaired into a shape that remained visibly cracked.

He did not apologize.

Serali had not expected him to.

Instead, on the third council after the matter of dynastic continuity, he disagreed with her about drainage wards.

It was almost refreshing.

The morning had begun with grain routes, moved through three Watch reports, and paused for a dispute over harbor tariffs before arriving, inevitably, at Marielle explaining why some portion of the city was structurally offensive.

This time, it was the old retaining wall along Crown Gardens.

Despite the name, the gardens did not belong to the palace. They were a public park on the southern terraces, maintained by the crown and used by anyone willing to endure children, fountains, ornamental ducks, and the occasional courtier attempting to appear approachable.

The wall itself was neither part of Myrae’s defenses nor connected to the damaged arrays Marielle and Serali had been studying elsewhere. It existed for the less glamorous purpose of keeping the upper terrace, its roads, and several hundred tons of rain-soaked earth from descending into the park below.

Apparently, it was doing so badly.

Serali sat two places from Allandra with Marielle’s revised reinforcement plan open before her.

The clerk taking minutes had written Royal Mage Serali across the top of her agenda without hesitation.

Serali had stared at it long enough for him to notice.

“Is something incorrect, Royal Mage?”

“No.”

She had looked away before the answer could become stranger.

Now Marielle flattened one ink-stained hand over the southern section of the plan.

“The wall is stable in dry weather,” she said. “Unfortunately, Avalusia continues to experience rain.”

Yvander rubbed both hands over his face.

Marielle continued. “The existing drainage wards force water through three spill channels beneath the western path. During heavy storms, pressure gathers behind the central section faster than the channels can release it.”

“The spill channels already drain into Crown Gardens,” Merrow said.

“Yes.”

“You propose sending additional magical pressure through a public park.”

“I propose preventing the terrace from collapsing into one.”

“That is not the same concern.”

“It will become the same concern very quickly if the wall fails.”

Merrow tapped the diagram. “Can the channels bear the additional magical load?”

Marielle looked toward Serali.

So did Merrow.

For the briefest moment, he seemed to resent finding her there.

Then he said, stiffly, “Royal Mage?”

The title did not come easily.

But it came.

Serali bent over the plan. “Not continuously.”

Merrow frowned. “Then the proposal fails.”

“No. The channels would only carry the excess when pressure behind the retaining wall reached the secondary threshold. The diversion would last long enough for the overloaded section to discharge.”

“Into the gardens.”

“Into the lower drainage beds beneath the gardens.”

“The crown maintains those grounds.”

“The crown also maintains the road above them.”

Marielle leaned forward. “Flower beds recover from compression more easily than pedestrians.”

Merrow’s mouth tightened. “I am aware.”

“You objected as though you weren’t.”

“I object to destroying public property every time an engineer discovers a new use for it.”

“That is unfair,” Marielle said. “Sometimes I discover old uses.”

Hagen, lounging in his chair with all the discipline of a cat who had accidentally inherited a council seat, covered his mouth.

Allandra did not look at him.

This meant she was also trying not to smile.

Merrow returned his attention to Serali. “You are confident the diverted force would remain beneath the park?”

“No.”

He stared at her.

Serali tapped the marked drainage beds. “I am confident it is more likely to remain there than behind a failing retaining wall.”

“That is not especially reassuring.”

“Structural failure rarely is.”

For one strange moment, Serali wondered whether this was what Cillian had imagined when he taught her to trace theoretical warding arrays in ash and stolen ink. Not escape. Not war. Sitting at a council table in another kingdom, explaining how to keep a public garden from being buried beneath half a terrace.

Probably not.

The thought warmed and hurt anyway.

Merrow studied the plan. “ And you consider temporary damage to Crown Gardens preferable?”

“To the upper terrace collapsing into it?”

A pause.

“Yes,” Merrow said irritably. “When phrased that way.”

“There is another way?”

“Several, if one has tact.”

“I have been told.”

Verya turned a page in her docket. “Repeatedly.”

Merrow glanced toward her, perhaps hoping for support.

Verya did not look up.

For one moment, Serali expected the old pattern. The dismissal. The careful insinuation that she had misunderstood Avalusian priorities. The reminder that she was foreign, dangerous, fortunate to be tolerated.

Instead, Merrow exhaled through his nose.

“Very well,” he said. “The Royal Mage’s reasoning is sound.”

Then he moved on.

Just like that.

No one remarked upon it.

That was the remarkable part.

Yvander began asking what the repairs would cost. Marielle gave a number. Yvander made a noise usually associated with mortal injury. Harrek requested that the Watch be informed before anyone redirected magical pressure through a public garden. Verya asked for the proposal in writing.

Council continued.

Serali sat very still for several breaths.

Across the table, Hagen was watching her.

His gaze moved from Merrow to the clerk’s minutes, then back to Serali.

He lifted one brow.

She narrowed her eyes.

His mouth curved.

Infuriating man.

When council adjourned, Serali gathered her papers. Hagen appeared at her shoulder before she could escape.

“Touching,” he said.

“What is?”

“Reconciliation.”

“We did not reconcile.”

“No?”

“No.”

“You discussed drainage without mentioning livestock.”

“The morning is still young.”

Hagen smiled. “He has decided you are a colleague he dislikes instead of an intruder he dislikes.”

“Promotion.”

“Substantial.”

Serali aligned the edges of her reports. “Was there a point to you hovering?”

“I was appreciating history.”

His gaze moved to the chair she had just vacated.

“It suits you,” he said.

“What?”

“The chair.”

Serali looked at him sharply.

His expression was light.

The words were not.

Before she could answer, he took the top report from her stack.

“I’ll carry this.”

“No.”

“You have six.”

“I possess hands.”

This book’s true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

“A fact of which the council remains painfully aware.”

“Hagen.”

He was already walking toward the doors.

Serali followed because allowing him to escape with a north-wall report seemed irresponsible.

Not because the chair suited her.

That was absurd.

It was a chair.

Furniture had no opinions.

The increasingly alarming problem was that everyone else in the palace appeared to value hers.

The guards at the council doors greeted her without pausing over the title.

“Royal Mage.”

Clerks sent ward reports directly to her study instead of routing them through Daravan first. Marielle left diagrams on her desk with questions scrawled in the margins. Servants no longer stopped speaking when she entered a corridor.

Sometimes they stopped her instead.

Later that same afternoon, after Serali had reclaimed the north-wall report from Hagen and escaped with only three additional observations about her chair, she crossed the western gallery on her way back to her rooms.

Half-finished lantern frames leaned against the walls, their panes painted gold, green, and pale spring blue. Garlands lay across the floor, woven from evergreen branches and the first greenhouse flowers. A cluster of maids stood among them with several lengths of ribbon draped over their arms.

Preparations for First Sun had spread through the palace almost without Serali noticing.

The festival was still several weeks away, but Avalusia apparently required its largest celebration of the year to begin consuming everyone’s attention well in advance.

Beyond that, Serali remained uncertain.

She understood that First Sun marked the beginning of spring. She had gathered that there would be lanterns, flowers, food, open doors, and enough ceremony to occupy half the palace. Whether any of those things happened at dawn, lasted several days, involved religious observance, public drunkenness, formal court dress, or all four at once remained unclear.

Everyone spoke of it as if explanation would be insulting.

Serali had never seen it.

Lyehira observed the changing season differently, and far less enthusiastically. Spring arrived there as a practical concern involving thawed roads, flooded cellars, and mud deep enough to swallow a boot.

Avalusia, by contrast, appeared determined to greet it with several weeks of organized brightness.

What happened after that was apparently obvious to everyone but her.

“The blue ribbons,” one maid said as Serali approached. “Not the white. The white disappears against the stone.”

“The blue fades in sunlight,” another argued.

“Royal Mage?”

Serali stopped.

Three maids looked at her expectantly.

She glanced behind herself.

There was no one there.

“Yes?”

The first maid held up two lengths of ribbon. “Which would you use for the lanterns?”

Serali stared at them.

This was plainly a trap.

“The blue or the white?”

“Yes.”

“Why are you asking me?”

The maids exchanged a glance.

“You notice colors,” the second said, as though this were obvious. “And you said the silver paint made the east-hall lanterns look washed out.”

Serali had said that.

Once.

She looked from the white ribbon to the blue, then toward the painted lantern panes.

“The blue,” she said. “The white will disappear against the stone, and the lanterns will only be in direct sunlight for part of the morning.”

The second maid looked triumphant.

The first sighed and surrendered the ribbon. “Thank you, Royal Mage.”

Serali continued down the corridor.

Behind her, someone whispered, not quite quietly enough, “I told you she would choose blue.”

No one had ever asked Serali’s opinion on festival ribbons in Lyehira.

People had asked what color gown she would wear to communicate obedience, availability, mourning, submission, filial gratitude, or sufficient shame.

Never ribbon.

Never because they had remembered something she said and decided her judgment might be useful.

She found the encounter more unsettling than council.

The kitchens were worse.

By the time Serali reached her rooms, Mara had set out a late luncheon. Soup, cheese, sliced pears, and a small loaf beneath a cloth on the sideboard.

Still warm.

Serali looked at it suspiciously.

“There is bread again.”

“There is usually bread,” Mara said.

“Not like that.”

No sliced arrangement. No decorative glaze. Just a dark-crusted loaf meant to be torn open and eaten while the butter could still melt into it.

The kitchens had discovered her weakness several weeks earlier, when Serali returned from an early wall inspection just as the morning loaves came from the ovens. She had paused outside the lower bakery at the smell of warm flour, yeast, and butter.

Only for a moment.

The head baker had noticed.

“That smells good,” Serali had said, because apparently surviving council had left her too exhausted to lie.

The following morning, a small loaf appeared beside her breakfast plate.

After that, it began appearing whenever the kitchens expected her to eat. At breakfast. At lunch. Once, inexplicably, during a late council session.

Serali lifted the cloth.

Steam still clung faintly to the crust.

In Lyehira, food had always carried rules. Banquets were performances, appetite something noticed and measured. Warm bread had been eaten quickly between duties, when she could find it at all, before someone decided she had not earned the luxury of hunger.

Before Naerith, her mother had sometimes brought home loaves still warm from the village oven.

Serali remembered tearing one open with both hands. Steam against her face. Butter disappearing into the center.

She reached for the knife.

“They think you aren’t eating enough,” Mara said.

“I eat.”

“They think you eat like someone expecting the plate to be taken away.”

Serali looked at her.

Mara continued folding a gown. “That was not criticism.”

“It sounded like criticism.”

“It was concern.”

“Worse.”

Mara smiled slightly. “There will be bread tomorrow.”

“There is bread every day.”

“Yes.”

Serali tore off a piece and spread butter over the warm center.

That morning, Merrow had asked for her professional judgment. That afternoon, palace maids had remembered an opinion she had offered about lantern paint. Now the kitchens had remembered that she liked bread.

The palace was developing an alarming habit of listening to her.

She still did not know what to do with kindness repeated often enough to become routine.

Apparently, she ate it with butter.

Chapter 139: Residual Readings

Warm bread, at least, had become routine.

The shadow-sun lattice had not.

More than a month had passed since Serali’s shadows and Allandra’s light had woven themselves across the winter garden. Merrow’s petition had come later, only a few weeks ago, but the older incident remained the palace’s favorite unanswered question.

It had been impossible to conceal.

Too many guards had seen light tear across the garden. Too many servants had watched living shadow climb the walls and sunlight answer it. Too many windows had rattled. Too many roses had erupted into bloom and stubbornly refused to stop.

The bond remained secret.

Verya’s official explanation involved magical resonance, unstable recovery, proximity to the queen’s Mantle, and enough legal terminology to make curiosity feel like labor.

The palace accepted it.

Technically.

The staff also possessed eyes. They simply lacked the impossible answer.

Mate bonds belonged to academic histories and half-remembered songs. Even there, bonds between Night and Sun Fae were nearly unheard of. Suggesting one now would have sounded less like observation than superstition.

So the household settled on an explanation that belonged to the present.

By now, nearly everyone in the royal household believed the Queen of Avalusia and her Royal Mage were lovers.

They had reached this conclusion without meeting, voting, or apparently speaking above a whisper.

They had also decided, with admirable unanimity, that it was none of their business.

The resulting conspiracy of discretion was efficient enough that even Daravan grudgingly respected it.

Doors closed at convenient moments. Servants discovered reasons to leave rooms. When Allandra worked late, two cups appeared. If Serali crossed the private residence corridor after midnight, the guards studied the opposite wall with religious concentration.

No rumor had escaped the palace.

As far as Daravan’s people could determine, no servant had sold the story to the court, the noble houses, the broadsheets, or the more predatory taverns.

Allandra had been right.

Her household was loyal.

This did not make them uncertain.

There were only two exceptions.

Everly remained convinced that Serali attended breakfast because Serali was Everly’s friend. Allandra’s presence was, in her mind, a pleasant but secondary arrangement.

Marielle knew that something private existed between the queen and Royal Mage. What she did not understand was which parts everyone else had silently agreed not to notice.

She understood magical resonance much better.

Having eliminated sympathetic response, Mantle contamination, and ordinary affinity, she had concluded that the answer must be something interesting.

“Your magic is quieter today,” she said during a north-wall inspection.

Serali looked down from the repaired array. “Is it?”

“Yes.” Marielle glanced toward Allandra, who stood several paces away speaking with Harrek. “It is frequently quieter when Her Majesty is present.”

Daravan closed his eyes. “Marielle.”

“I am recording environmental conditions.”

“No.”

“I have not asked anything.”

“You are about to.”

Marielle frowned. “I was going to ask whether they would spend three nights in rooms at measured distances from one another.”

“No.”

“For comparison.”

“No.”

She looked at Serali. “Do you object?”

Daravan’s warning look was nearly impressive.

“Yes,” Serali said.

Marielle nodded. “Then I won’t ask.”

“You already did.”

“No. I described the method.”

She produced a notebook.

Daravan stared at its cover.

Questions Captain Daravan Has Mistaken for Threats

“Give me that.”

Marielle clutched it to her chest. “It contains research.”

“It contains my name.”

“In a research context.”

Allandra turned from Harrek. “What is happening?”

“Nothing,” Marielle said.

“Research,” Daravan said.

Serali lifted both hands. “I had no part in it.”

Marielle opened the notebook and made an addition.

After that, she stopped proposing experiments aloud whenever Daravan was nearby.

The notebooks continued multiplying.

Several concerned the lattice and its effects on nearby wards. Two concerned the roses. One appeared devoted entirely to why Allandra’s Mantle answered Serali’s shadows without trying to consume them.

Another contained only two overlapping circles and a single word:

STABLE?

Serali pointed at it. “What does that mean?”

Marielle looked over from a dismantled lantern housing. “I don’t know yet.”

“Comforting.”

“It might be.”

“What might be?”

“The answer.”

“You do not know the question.”

“That is why there is a question mark.”

Perfectly reasonable.

Deeply unsettling.

The roses were worse.

More than a month after the lattice formed, they still bloomed throughout the winter garden. Frost touched the red and gold flowers and failed to kill them.

The gardeners pruned them, fed them, replaced the soil, tested the irrigation, and eventually began taking the matter personally.

Master Gardener Vallen found Serali beside the central trellis one morning, mud on his knees and betrayal in his eyes.

“They should be dormant.”

Serali looked at the flowers. “They aren’t.”

“I know.”

“Then we agree.”

“That is not helpful.”

“No.”

He held up a clipping. “This stem produced two new buds after I cut it.”

“Perhaps it resented you.”

“Plants do not resent.”

From beneath the trellis, Marielle said, “Some do.”

Vallen closed his eyes.

Serali looked down. Marielle lay in the damp grass with one arm beneath the roots and a notebook balanced on her chest.

“Why are you under there?”

“Residual readings.”

“I told her not to disturb the roots,” Vallen said.

“I am supporting one.”

“You are beneath my roses.”

“They are not behaving like your roses.”

Vallen looked at Serali. “Make her leave.”

“My authority does not extend to engineers.”

“It should.”

Marielle emerged with soil in her hair, then looked toward the upper gallery.

Allandra had appeared there with Verya.

Serali recognized the sudden focus in Marielle’s face.

“No.”

Marielle blinked. “I didn’t say anything.”

“You were about to.”

Daravan’s methods were contagious.

Marielle looked from Allandra to Serali, then at the roses.

“Have you noticed that the western blossoms open more fully when both of you are here?”

Vallen made a strangled sound.

Serali looked up.

Allandra noticed her, and warmth moved quietly through the bond.

The servants passing behind the queen found urgent reasons to study the opposite wall.

Marielle checked her instruments. “Interesting.”

Vallen stared from Serali to Allandra, then back to Marielle.

“You truly don’t know.”

Marielle frowned. “Know what?”

He opened his mouth.

Serali looked at him.

“Nothing,” he said.

Marielle studied him for a moment.

Then wrote that down too.

The palace’s discretion might have amused Serali if it had not worried Allandra.

The concern surfaced that evening in the queen’s office.

Allandra stood beside the window with a report from Daravan’s intelligence officers. Serali sat at the smaller table with three ward diagrams and a piece of warm bread she had not requested.

Daravan waited near the door.

“No mention in the court circulars?” Allandra asked.

“None.”

“The noble quarter?”

“Nothing reliable.”

“Meaning?”

“Lord Casmin’s third son claims you have replaced the council with shadow-bound assassins.”

Serali looked up. “Efficient.”

“He also claims Marielle is constructing a mechanical dragon beneath the palace.”

Allandra glanced at the proposals on her desk. “She is not.”

Daravan paused. “As far as I know.”

Allandra set down the report. “But the household is speaking among itself.”

“Yes.”

“And they believe—”

“Yes.”

Her gaze moved briefly to Serali.

Serali took another bite of bread.

“The household is loyal,” Daravan said. “No one wants to be remembered as the servant who sold the queen’s private life to the noble quarter.”

“That does not mean the matter is contained.”

“No.”

The council certainly knew.

They spent too many hours together not to. Most lived within the palace or passed through it daily. They saw who arrived at breakfast, who lingered after meetings, whose attention shifted when the other entered a room. They had watched Allandra and Serali become fluent in one another’s silences.

Verya knew and considered discretion a legal obligation.

Harrek knew and preferred not to create a security problem where none yet existed.

Yvander knew and had apparently decided royal romance fell outside the granary budget.

Hagen had known before almost anyone and enjoyed knowing far too much.

Marielle alone continued to observe every piece of evidence while somehow failing to assemble it into the conclusion everyone else had reached.

Even Merrow knew.

What he lacked was proof.

“He has not raised it,” Allandra said.

Daravan did not ask who she meant. “No.”

“Why?”

“Because Merrow is difficult, not reckless.”

Serali lifted a brow.

Daravan amended, “Not consistently reckless.”

That was fair.

“He dislikes the appointment,” Daravan continued. “He questions your judgment. He is also aware that accusing his queen of granting royal office in exchange for intimacy would require more than noticing where you look during council.”

“And if he had more?” Serali asked.

“Then he would raise it,” Allandra said.

Not vindictively. Not for sport.

Merrow was capable of cruelty when he believed the realm required it, but he was not eager to manufacture scandal merely to wound Allandra. He would need evidence. A decision he could connect directly to Serali. Favor granted without explanation. Security compromised. Succession placed at risk.

Something that allowed suspicion to dress itself as duty.

“Hagen said the court would ask whether I was necessary to Avalusia,” Serali said, “or merely necessary to you.”

Daravan’s mouth tightened. “He said that?”

“Yes.”

“What else?”

“Many irritating things.”

“That narrows nothing.”

Unease moved through the bond.

Not shame.

Calculation.

The reflex of a queen measuring how tenderness might be sharpened against everyone involved.

“The bond remains hidden,” Daravan said. “That distinction matters.”

Allandra looked at him. “Does it?”

“Yes. The council suspects you are lovers. That is politically inconvenient. A magical bond would suggest compulsion, compromised judgment, foreign influence, and implications for the Mantle none of us can yet answer.”

“Marielle knows something happened,” Allandra said.

“Marielle knows everything except what people mean by it.”

Serali looked down to hide a smile.

Daravan continued, “At present, no one can prove the relationship, and no one outside this room, Lia, and Mara knows the bond’s nature. Merrow will not make a formal accusation from corridor gossip alone.”

“But someone else might,” Serali said.

“Yes.”

“They would not need proof,” Allandra said. “Only a story.”

Daravan nodded.

The agreement was so immediate that Serali almost laughed.

Allandra crossed the room and stopped beside Serali’s chair.

Not touching. Not with Daravan present and the office doors unsecured.

Still, the bond warmed.

“We will be careful,” Allandra said.

“We have been.”

“I know.”

“And the palace has kept quiet.”

“For now.”

Serali studied her face.

Allandra was not afraid of being named Serali’s lover.

She was afraid of what someone might build around the fact.

That Serali’s office had been purchased through intimacy. That Allandra’s judgment had been compromised. That Everly’s future had been endangered. That a foreign shadow mage had reached the queen’s bed and therefore the kingdom’s throat.

Polished language.

The same old violence beneath it.

Serali touched the cuff of her left sleeve.

Allandra’s gaze dropped.

The latch remained closed.

I am here.

Not permission to touch.

Only reassurance.

Allandra exhaled, and the tension in the bond eased.

Daravan looked toward the window.

“We will continue watching beyond the palace,” he said.

“And within it?” Allandra asked.

His gaze moved to the second cup beside Serali’s elbow, then to the bread on her plate.

“Within it, everyone already knows.”

Allandra’s mouth tightened.

Daravan added, “And appears determined to protect you from anyone who does not.”

“That may be worse,” Allandra said.

“It often is,” Serali replied.

Winter continued retreating.

The roses continued blooming.

Council met. Reports accumulated. Marielle filled notebooks and refrained from proposing dangerous experiments aloud whenever Daravan was nearby.

Everly continued announcing which mornings counted as some breakfasts, unaware that every invitation confirmed what the household had already decided.

Serali inspected walls, argued with Merrow, ate lunch with Verya and Marielle, and learned that the head baker set aside the smallest morning loaf for her because it had the crispest crust.

She stopped noticing when guards greeted her as Royal Mage.

She stopped searching every servant’s smile for mockery.

She stopped expecting every kindness to arrive with a price attached.

Not entirely.

Enough.
