The Queen's Mage

Serali read the same sentence four times before accepting that the book had become useless.

This was unfortunate, because the sentence appeared to involve a hidden terrace, a rainstorm, and an earl with tragically undone cuffs. Under normal circumstances, she would have considered that suspicious enough to investigate.

Today, the words slid off her mind like water off glass.

The Heat had been worse all morning.

Not unbearable.

That was the problem.

Unbearable would have been simple. Unbearable would have meant leaving council, sending for Lia, locking herself in the bathing chamber, or doing something dramatic and therefore satisfying.

This was quieter.

A pressure beneath her skin. A hum in the bond. A constant awareness of Allandra somewhere in the palace, not as a location exactly, but as direction. Warmth behind a wall. Sunlight under a door.

Serali hated poetic comparisons.

The bond had made her vulnerable to them.

She shut the book.

Mara, who had been sorting laundry near the wardrobe, looked over at once.

Serali pointed at her. “Do not.”

“I said nothing.”

“You prepared to.”

“I prepared to fold a nightshift.”

“With judgment.”

“With corners.”

“Same disease.”

Mara set the nightshift down. “The book is bad?”

“The book is fine.”

“That sounds worse.”

“It is.”

Mara crossed to the tea table and poured without asking. Serali should have objected on principle. She accepted the cup instead, which was how people became dependent on civilization.

“Honey separate,” Mara said.

“Always.”

Serali added too much, stirred too hard, and watched the tea spiral.

Mara sat opposite her. Not beside. Not too close. Serali had begun to understand that as one of Mara’s quiet mercies.

“Is it the bond?” Mara asked.

Serali snorted. “It is always the bond now. The bond. The Heat. The office. The rooms. The wardrobe. The fact that Lady Verya owns forty dresses and somehow this is my problem.”

“Approximately forty.”

“Do not defend her.”

“I would not dare.”

Serali took a sip of tea and scalded her tongue. Good. At least some heat in this room could be blamed on liquid.

Mara waited.

Terrible woman.

Serali looked toward the study, where Marielle’s diagrams lay under one of Everly’s cards. GOOD MAGIC, the card ordered in purple ink, as if magic could be bullied into moral clarity by a child with uneven spelling.

“I thought the iron explained it,” Serali said at last.

Mara’s face changed by a fraction. “The Heat?”

“Allandra seemed to feel everything more strongly. I thought perhaps I was only slow. Damaged. Suppressed. Then the anklet came off, and everything became louder.”

“That sounds frightening.”

“It is irritating.”

Mara did not correct her.

Worse.

Serali stared into the cup. “But it is still worse for her.”

“You know that?”

“I feel enough to know when she is holding something back.” Serali’s fingers tightened around the porcelain. “She is always holding something back.”

“She is queen.”

“That is not the same thing.”

“No,” Mara said. “It is not.”

The Heat shifted, as if summoned by naming. Not from Allandra this time. From Serali herself. Want, sharp enough to embarrass, curled through her before she could crush it.

She set the cup down.

Mara’s eyes lowered politely.

Serali hated that too. “You noticed.”

“I noticed the lamp.”

Serali looked.

The flame had dimmed, then stretched thin and tall, shadow pulling strangely along the wall behind it.

“Traitor,” Serali muttered.

“To be fair,” Mara said, “the lamp has no training.”

“I have training.”

“Yes.”

“That was not agreement.”

“No.”

Serali laughed despite herself, once, without much humor. “I do not know what is mine.”

Mara folded her hands in her lap. “What do you mean?”

“The wanting.” The word came out too flat. Too bare. Serali forced herself not to look away. “The bond wants. The Heat wants. Magic wants. Allandra wants, which I know because apparently my life is now an exercise in overhearing private weather. I want too, but I do not know where the bond ends and I begin.”

Mara was silent for a moment.

Then she said, “When the bond is quieter, do you still want her?”

Serali’s mouth closed.

That was rude.

Not the question. The usefulness of it.

“Yes.”

“When she frustrates you?”

“Yes.”

“When she is not in the room?”

Serali looked toward the study door, toward the wall beyond which the palace stretched in too many directions.

“Yes.”

Mara nodded.

“That proves nothing,” Serali said.

“No. But it suggests something.”

“You have become very inconvenient.”

“I learned from you.”

Serali made a faint offended sound and reached for her tea.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

Mara continued, softer now. “Is this only about whether the want is yours?”

Serali did not answer.

Mara did not press.

Good woman.

Terrible woman.

Finally, Serali said, “Mistress Callenne saw my back.”

Mara went still.

“She did not say anything,” Serali added quickly. “She was good. Annoyingly good. She adjusted the measuring tape and went on as if my body were not a map of everyone who has ever had authority over it.”

Mara’s hands tightened once.

Serali looked at the lamp instead of at her.

“I know Allandra has seen scars. Some of them. Enough. But seeing a wound because you are trying to save someone is not the same as seeing everything that remains after.”

“No,” Mara said quietly.

“And the books are very insistent that desire simplifies bodies.”

“The books are bad scholarship.”

“They are persistent scholarship.”

Mara’s mouth almost twitched.

Serali did not let herself smile. “What if she wants the idea of me? The rescued mage. The sharp one. The one in the blue gown who can argue in council and make Marielle’s stones feel understood.”

“That sounds like several ideas.”

“Mara.”

Mara leaned forward slightly. “Has Her Majesty ever behaved as if she wants you polished?”

“She is literally queen.”

“That is not an answer.”

Serali glared.

Mara accepted the glare with disgraceful composure. “Queens may enjoy polished things. That does not mean this queen mistakes polish for truth.”

Serali looked down.

Her tea had gone still.

“She looks at me,” Serali said.

“Yes.”

“Like she sees something I do not.”

“Perhaps she does.”

“That is not comforting.”

“No,” Mara said. “But it may be information.”

Serali hated that word now.

Information, not surrender.

She had said it. She had meant it.

Unfortunately, meaning a thing did not make it simple.

A knock sounded at the outer door.

Mara stood.

Serali reached for her sleeve before remembering that gesture meant too many things now.

Mara noticed. Of course.

“I will see who it is,” she said.

It was Lia.

The healer entered carrying a leather satchel and the expression of a woman who had already decided questions would be answered in an order of her choosing.

Serali narrowed her eyes. “I did not send for you.”

“No.”

“That is ominous.”

“Yes.”

Mara looked between them. “Tea?”

“Strong,” Lia said.

Serali sat straighter. “Why?”

“Because I spent last night cooling a maid’s hands and trying to figure out how to convince a queen that guilt is not a treatment plan.”

The room went very quiet.

Serali’s heart struck once, hard.

Mara turned sharply. “Is the maid all right?”

“Yes. Reddened palms. No blistering. She will be fine.”

Serali stood without meaning to. “What happened?”

Lia looked at her.

Too long.

Serali understood before she answered.

The Heat.

Allandra.

Warm water.

“Oh,” Serali said.

It was a small sound for the way the room seemed to tilt.

Lia set her satchel on the table. “Allandra intends to tell you herself.”

“Then why are you telling me?”

“I am telling you enough to prevent imagination from becoming crueler than fact.”

Serali’s hands curled. “Did I cause it?”

“No.”

“You answered too quickly.”

“I answered accurately.”

“The bond—”

“Is not a chain you pulled.”

“But if she is worse because of me—”

“No.”

The word cracked through the room.

Mara went still.

Serali stopped.

Lia’s face had not softened. That was one of the things Serali trusted about her.

“No,” Lia repeated. “You do not take responsibility for another person’s magic because that magic responds to wanting you.”

Serali’s throat tightened.

Lia continued, each word clean and merciless. “Allandra is queen. Sun Fae. Mantle-bearer. Trained to turn feeling into authority before she can bleed. The Heat is working through that. Through her power, her control, her fear, her desire. You are part of the weather. You are not the weather itself.”

Serali sat slowly.

The chair accepted her, which was rude.

“But I could help.”

“Yes.”

That was worse than no.

Lia sat across from her. “You could. Touch may settle the bond. Nearness may ease the pressure. Desire answered freely may calm what denial sharpens.”

Serali closed her eyes.

There it was.

The terrible, tempting usefulness of herself.

“But,” Lia said, “you are not medicine.”

Serali opened her eyes.

Lia’s gaze held hers. “You are not a dose. Not a treatment. Not a cooling cloth pressed to Allandra’s fever. Her suffering is not an invoice, and your body is not payment.”

Serali looked away.

The words went somewhere deep.

Somewhere bruised.

“I know that,” she said.

“No. You are learning it.”

Mara set tea down silently beside Lia, then retreated to the wardrobe with the tact of someone pretending not to listen while listening with her whole soul.

Serali stared at the table. “If I go to her because I want to help her, how is that different?”

“Ask the rest of the sentence.”

Serali frowned. “What?”

“You said because I want to help her. What else?”

Serali hated healers.

They were worse than lawyers because they could say unreasonable things in warm voices.

After a moment, she said, “Because I want her.”

Lia nodded. “There.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the beginning of one.”

Serali folded her arms. “Verya would have made that less annoying.”

“Verya would have charged a filing fee.”

Despite herself, Serali almost smiled.

Lia leaned back. “Can you say no to Allandra and believe she will stop?”

“Yes.”

No hesitation.

That startled Serali more than the question.

Lia noticed.

Of course.

“Good,” Lia said. “Can you say yes and believe you may change your mind?”

Serali’s fingers tightened against her sleeve.

She thought of Allandra’s forehead against hers.

May I?

She thought of Allandra stepping back when the bond flared too hot.

She thought of: I will not decide for you.

“Yes,” Serali said, quieter this time.

“Can you want her without making your wanting an apology for what others did to you?”

That one hurt.

Serali looked at Mara, then away.

“I do not know.”

“Then start there.”

“With not knowing?”

“With not lying.”

Serali gave a short laugh. “That seems inefficient.”

“It is healing. Efficiency is not always the point.”

“Court disagrees.”

“Court can limp.”

The laugh came again, less sharp this time.

The Heat moved under it. Not gone. Not tamed. Present. A low tide beneath the floor of herself.

Serali pressed one hand over her sternum, annoyed by the melodrama and unable to stop.

“I want to go to her,” she said.

Mara’s hands stilled near the wardrobe.

Lia did not react beyond a slight tilt of her head. “Tonight?”

Serali closed her eyes.

There was the question.

Not do you want.

Not would it help.

Not is she hurting.

Tonight?

She listened inward, past the Heat, past worry, past the old instinct to repay safety with compliance.

Desire was there.

So was fear.

So was exhaustion.

So was the knowledge that if she went tonight, part of her would still be trying to solve Allandra’s pain like a problem assigned in council.

“No,” Serali said.

The word hurt.

It also held.

Lia nodded. “Good.”

Serali opened her eyes. “Do not sound pleased.”

“I am pleased.”

“It is obnoxious.”

“Yes.”

Mara came back to the table and picked up Serali’s abandoned cup. “More tea?”

“Wine,” Serali said.

Lia and Mara both looked at her.

Serali sighed. “Tea.”

Mara poured.

Lia rose and gathered her satchel. “Practice the privacy ward before sleep. Loosen it if it becomes a wall. Tighten it if the Heat begins making decisions. Send for me if shadows start doing anything with opinions.”

“My shadows are disciplined.”

Mara glanced at the lamp.

Serali pointed at her. “Do not.”

“I did not.”

“You considered.”

“Briefly.”

Lia moved toward the door, then paused. “Serali.”

“What?”

“When you go to Allandra, go because you choose to. Not because you are afraid of what happens if you do not.”

Serali swallowed.

“Yes.”

Lia left.

The door closed softly behind her.

For a while, Serali sat with Mara in the lamplit room, listening to the palace settle around them.

Allandra was somewhere beyond the walls.

Still warm behind the bond.

Still hurting, perhaps.

Still not Serali’s wound to bandage with herself.

Mara set the tea beside her.

“Honey separate,” she said.

Serali looked at the cup.

At the steady lamp.

At the closed door.

Then she picked up the book again, opened it to the hidden terrace and the rainstorm and the earl with his tragic cuffs, and found, with deep irritation, that the sentence now made sense.
