The Queen's Mage

In the days after the announcement of Serali’s appointment as Royal Mage, Myrae had developed opinions.

This was unfortunate, because Myrae did not seem to develop opinions quietly.

They appeared on tavern walls, market posts, alley stones, warehouse doors, prayer boards, and, once, on the side of a grain cart Yvander had personally ordered scrubbed before the horse could become politically involved.

The most popular opinion, painted in black outside the harbor watchhouse, read:

NO SHADOW AT THE QUEEN’S HAND.

By morning, someone had added beneath it in blue:

BETTER SHADOW THAN BLOOD ON THE COBBLES.

By noon, someone else had written:

SHE SAVED TESSA.

By evening, the watch had washed the entire wall clean, which did nothing except produce six new versions in worse spelling.

“Technically,” Marielle said, leaning over Harrek’s report, “the third one is the strongest argument.”

Verya did not look up from her docket. “Graffiti is not an argument.”

“It can be.”

“It should not be entered into civic record as one.”

“I did not say civic record. I said argument.”

Harrek, seated halfway down the council table with both hands wrapped around a stack of reports as if they might try to escape, smiled in the strained manner of a man who had spent the morning supervising the removal of treasonous paint.

“I would prefer,” he said, “if the city argued on parchment.”

Yvander grunted. “Parchment costs money.”

“So does repainting walls,” Harrek said.

“Tax the paint.”

“Master Yvander,” Verya said.

“What? If they insist on writing opinions, they can fund their removal.”

Marielle pointed at him. “That is the first tax proposal I have ever liked.”

“It is not a tax proposal,” Verya said.

“It could be, if you were braver.”

Allandra sat at the head of the table, one hand resting beside the morning docket, listening to the exchange with the stillness she wore when she was

either amused or considering whether three separate councilors could be reassigned to different provinces before lunch.

Serali had learned not to guess.

She sat in her increasingly less provisional chair, which had migrated closer to the table over the last weeks like furniture with political ambitions. At first, the placement had irritated her. Then she discovered it gave her better access to Marielle’s diagrams and made Merrow more uncomfortable, so she had accepted the improvement with appropriate suspicion.

The chair still did not feel like hers.

But no one else sat in it.

That had begun to matter.

Harrek shifted a page to the top of his stack. “The graffiti is only part of it, Majesty. Pamphlets have increased in the harbor district and west market. Most are crude. A few are organized.”

“Define organized,” Daravan said from behind Allandra’s left shoulder.

“Same ink. Same press. Same phrasing.” Harrek glanced at the report. “The most common line is still ‘No shadow at the queen’s hand,’ though we have variations.”

Marielle held out a hand. “Give me the worst one.”

“Lady Marielle,” Verya said.

“What? If I am expected to defend the north wall from covert magical sabotage, I should be permitted to hear the city’s bad metaphors.”

Harrek looked helplessly at Allandra.

Allandra nodded once. “One.”

Harrek cleared his throat. “‘The queen keeps Night in her sleeve and calls it counsel.’”

The room paused.

Serali looked down at her hands.

Night in her sleeve.

Not the worst thing anyone had ever called her. Not even close. But there was something intimate in it that made her want to peel the words off her skin.

Across the table, Hagen’s mouth curved faintly.

“Almost poetic,” he said.

Allandra’s gaze cut to him.

He lifted one hand. “Not effective poetry. But effort should be noted.”

“Effort should be discouraged,” Verya said.

Yvander leaned back with a groan. “Can we tax poetry?”

“No,” said Allandra, Verya, and Harrek at once.

Marielle looked disappointed.

Serali lifted her eyes to the report. “It is not inaccurate.”

The council turned toward her.

She regretted speaking immediately, which was becoming a familiar council experience.

“No,” Allandra said.

Serali looked at her.

The queen’s face was composed, but the privacy ward between them rattled with a brief flash of protective heat before Allandra pulled it back behind the shutters Lia had taught her.

Serali felt only the echo.

Still enough.

“Royal Mage,” Allandra said, voice level, “you are not a shadow in my sleeve.”

Hagen’s brows rose slightly.

Daravan’s expression did not change, which meant he had noticed everything.

Serali leaned back. “Fine. I am a shadow with an official budget.”

Marielle tapped the table. “And a very useful one.”

Yvander grunted. “Useful budgets are rare.”

“Deep praise,” Marielle said.

“Accurate praise,” Yvander replied.

Harrek’s smile had softened a little. “The counter-graffiti matters as well. Especially in the market district. Tessa Marrin’s name has spread.”

Allandra’s attention sharpened. “Has her family been harassed?”

“Some attention. Not all hostile.” Harrek shuffled another page forward. “The seamstress guild sent two senior women to speak for the household. They have made it very clear that anyone bothering Tessa will lose access to three of the best wedding-dress makers in Myrae.”

Marielle looked impressed. “Brutal.”

“Effective,” Verya said.

Serali stared at the table.

Tessa.

She had asked about the girl several times, always through Mara or Lia, never directly enough to make it obvious. The answer had been the same: healing, frightened, safe. No broken bones. Bruising fading. Family angry enough to be useful.

Serali had not expected her name to become part of the city’s argument.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it’s taken without the author’s consent. Report it.

She did not know what to do with that.

Harrek continued, “Market witnesses remain divided, but a growing number support the Crown’s version of events. The common phrasing is that the Royal Mage acted when the watch hesitated.”

His nervous smile returned.

“Which,” he added, “is not ideal for watch morale.”

Daravan said, “Morale may improve with competence.”

Harrek winced. “Yes, Captain.”

Serali looked down to hide a smile.

Allandra did not bother hiding hers entirely. “What is the status of the magical-incident training?”

“First rotation began yesterday. Poorly.”

Marielle brightened. “How poorly?”

“One recruit attempted to strike an illusion with a bucket.”

“Was the bucket harmed?”

“No.”

“Then there is hope.”

Verya wrote something down. “The training should continue.”

“Agreed,” Allandra said. “Quietly, but visibly enough that citizens know improvement is underway.”

Harrek nodded, writing quickly. “Yes, Majesty.”

Merrow cleared his throat.

Serali’s fingers tightened around her cup before she could stop them.

It had become a reflex.

Marielle glanced at her hand.

“Careful,” she murmured. “That one has water in it.”

Serali murmured back, “I know.”

“You were calculating weight.”

“A little.”

“Reasonable.”

Merrow, fortunately or unfortunately, did not hear them. “Majesty, with respect, I remain concerned that the Crown’s response may be feeding the very unrest we wish to calm.”

Allandra looked at him. “Explain.”

Merrow adjusted his cuff. “The more publicly we defend the Royal Mage, the more the city perceives her as central to royal policy. Perhaps a less visible posture would be prudent.”

Serali almost laughed.

Less visible.

A wonderful idea. Perhaps she could become invisible at council as well. Sit beneath the table with the strategic dignity of a footstool.

Verya’s voice was cool. “The Crown cannot appoint a Royal Mage and then behave as if ashamed of the appointment.”

Merrow flushed. “That is not what I suggest.”

“No,” Marielle said. “You suggest acting ashamed but not saying so.”

Yvander muttered, “That is cheaper.”

Verya looked at him.

He shrugged. “Not better. Cheaper.”

Hagen leaned forward. “Merrow’s concern is not entirely invented. Visibility creates attachment. Attachment creates targets. The more the city argues over Serali, the more useful she becomes to anyone wishing to argue over the queen.”

The use of her name made Serali’s attention snap to him.

Not Royal Mage.

Serali.

Hagen met her gaze with a mildness that did not fool her at all.

“You believe I should be hidden?” she asked.

“I believe hiding you would fail,” Hagen said. “And look guilty. A disastrous pairing.”

“How generous.”

“I am famous for it.”

Daravan made a small sound.

Hagen smiled at him. “Captain, surely you agree.”

“I try not to agree with you in public.”

“A wise precaution.”

Daravan’s expression remained dry. “But in this case, yes. Concealment is no longer possible and would suggest the Crown doubts its own decision.”

Merrow looked pained. “No one is suggesting concealment.”

“Less visible posture,” Marielle said. “We have moved on to translation.”

Serali glanced at Marielle.

Marielle looked back innocently.

Verya folded her hands. “The issue is not whether the Royal Mage is visible. She is. The issue is whether the Crown frames that visibility or allows hostile factions to do it.”

Harrek nodded. “Public confusion favors the worst storytellers.”

“Like pamphleteers,” Yvander said.

“And poets,” Marielle added.

Allandra’s gaze moved around the table. “Then we frame it.”

Merrow inhaled as if to object.

Allandra continued before he could. “Not with spectacle. With work. The Royal Mage will continue her duties in council, at the north wall inspections, and in magical-incident review. Witness protection continues. Watch training continues. Harrek, I want regular public notices about procedural improvements without naming Serali where unnecessary.”

Harrek wrote so quickly his quill scratched.

“Yvander, no paint tax.”

Yvander looked disappointed but unsurprised.

“Verya, prepare language clarifying that crown protection applies to witnesses and appointed officers, not merely to the Royal Mage.”

Verya nodded.

“Marielle, no public commentary on pamphlet grammar.”

Marielle opened her mouth.

Allandra looked at her.

Marielle closed it.

“Daravan, adjust palace patrols near the residence wing. Quietly.”

Serali’s head lifted.

Allandra did not look at her.

Good.

Maybe.

“And Hagen,” Allandra said.

Her brother’s brows rose. “I am honored to be included.”

“Stop encouraging noble curiosity.”

“I do no such thing.”

Allandra’s silence answered for her.

Hagen’s smile widened. “Very well. I will discourage it with great sincerity.”

“That is not what she asked,” Daravan said.

“It is adjacent.”

Serali looked between them, trying not to enjoy herself.

Council had become dangerous in an entirely new way: sometimes it was almost funny.

Merrow looked around the table as if searching for someone still willing to be appropriately alarmed. “Majesty, I only urge caution. There are old families who already believe this appointment weakens the dignity of the court.”

Serali spoke before she could decide not to.

“Because I am Night Fae?”

Merrow hesitated. “Because you are foreign.”

“Try again.”

His face reddened.

Verya looked at Serali. “Royal Mage.”

A warning.

Not disagreement.

Serali breathed once.

Then said, more evenly, “Because I was not selected from one of their daughters, nephews, cousins, priestly friends, or decorative idiots?”

Marielle whispered, “Better.”

Verya did not look pleased, but neither did she correct her.

Yvander leaned back. “She is not wrong.”

Merrow turned. “Master Yvander.”

“What? If there is an old office with a stipend attached, half the noble quarter will be offended they did not produce the correct spare child for it.”

“Exactly,” Marielle said. “The spare children are restless.”

Harrek’s smile twitched.

Hagen looked delighted.

Merrow looked as if the council had personally betrayed civilization.

Allandra’s mouth curved by the smallest possible degree. “The appointment stands.”

The words settled the table.

Merrow lowered his eyes.

Not defeated. Never that. Men like Merrow treated setback as a place to ferment.

But quiet.

For now.

The council moved on to the north wall, which meant Marielle became both less irritating and more alarming. She unrolled three diagrams, spread them across the table, and immediately knocked over Harrek’s ink.

“Evidence of sabotage should not be placed near open ink,” Verya said.

“Then ink should be less spillable,” Marielle replied.

“That is not how liquids work.”

“It could be.”

Serali reached for the nearest diagram before the ink could reach it, and Marielle passed her a cloth without looking.

A few weeks ago, no one at this table would have handed Serali anything sharp, stained, or important without flinching.

Now Marielle trusted her with evidence.

Yvander asked her cost questions directly.

Harrek glanced at her before answering anything involving magical unrest.

Verya corrected her with the irritable precision she used on people worth improving.

Daravan watched everything.

Hagen watched everyone.

Merrow watched her as if still hoping she might become less real if ignored long enough.

And Allandra—

Allandra did not watch.

Not directly.

Not too much.

The privacy wards held. The signet-and-cuff signals remained unused. Daravan looked slightly less like a man prepared to throw himself over a social grenade.

Progress.

Perhaps.

Then Allandra said, without looking at Serali, “Royal Mage, your assessment?”

And the table turned toward her.

Not to accuse.

Not to test whether she should be allowed to speak.

To hear the answer.

Serali looked down at the diagram beneath her hands.

The north wall’s ward-line ran in careful loops of blue ink. Marielle’s notes bristled in the margins. Someone had written “secondary convergence?” beside a gatehouse with three old repair scars.

Serali tapped the point with one finger.

“Here,” she said. “If I wanted the city to distrust its own walls without breaking them yet, I would start here.”

Silence.

Then Marielle leaned over her shoulder, eyes bright. “Why?”

Serali explained.

This time, no one interrupted.

That was new enough to frighten her.

Later, after the council adjourned and the others gathered papers, Harrek lingered near the door.

“Royal Mage?”

Serali turned.

He looked uncomfortable, which was not new. But his discomfort had a different shape now. Less fear of her. More fear of what he was about to say.

“Yes?”

Harrek lowered his voice. “Tessa Marrin’s mother asked me to pass something along, if I had occasion.”

Serali went still.

Allandra, at the head of the table, did not turn.

Daravan did.

Harrek continued, “She said to tell you Tessa has returned to work for half-days. And that she embroidered a shadow-bird onto a scrap of blue cloth and insists it is not for sale.”

Serali stared at him.

The words entered too slowly.

A shadow-bird.

Everly’s card in her study. The dark little shape above her palm in the first visit. Tessa, alive, working, stitching something that belonged to the worst day of Serali’s life and somehow making it into cloth.

Her throat hurt.

“Thank you,” she said.

Harrek bowed awkwardly and retreated as if relieved to have survived kindness.

Serali looked down at her hands.

She expected the room to have gone strange around her.

It had, but not badly.

Marielle pretended to sort diagrams.

Verya pretended to review her docket.

Yvander pretended to be asleep, unconvincingly.

Daravan pretended nothing. He watched her once, nodded once, and looked away.

Allandra remained at the head of the table.

She did not ask if Serali was all right.

She did not come closer.

She only touched her signet ring, briefly, not as a warning this time.

As acknowledgment.

Serali touched her left cuff.

For once, Daravan did not look pained.

Outside the council chamber, Myrae argued with itself in ink and paint and rumor. No shadow at the queen’s hand. She saved Tessa. Witch. Hero. Foreign. Royal Mage.

The city did not know what to make of her.

Serali was beginning to suspect the council did not either.

But when Marielle handed her another diagram and Verya said, “Your objection to the secondary convergence theory should be entered before Yvander begins shouting about costs,” Serali took the paper.

She sat back down.

And she went to work.
