The Queen's Mage

Chapter 134: The Matter of Dynastic Continuity

The conversation in the portrait gallery proved irritatingly difficult to forget.

Not because Hagen had threatened her.

He hadn’t.

Not because he had approved of her.

That was almost worse.

Because he had said several things that continued making sense after Serali had decided they ought to stop.

She found this deeply inconsiderate.

Winter settled over Avalusia in earnest.

Frost silvered the palace roofs each morning. The kitchens declared war on the cold with soups, fresh bread, and enough baked apples to sustain a siege.

Weeks passed.

Serali settled into the peculiar rhythm of being Royal Mage.

Councils.

North wall inspections.

Marielle arriving every few days with a new explanation for the impossible lattice, only to dismantle it herself before she finished explaining it.

Breakfasts that became less unusual.

The occasional evening that ended with Allandra arriving through the hidden passage and returning to her own rooms the following morning before the palace properly woke.

Games of Foxes and Hounds with Everly, who had finally managed to win exactly once and had spoken of little else for three days afterward.

Serali maintained it had been an accident.

Everly maintained it had been friendship.

Neither convinced the other.

For a little while, it almost became ordinary.

Then, on an otherwise ordinary morning, after north wall reports had been concluded and Yvander had finished arguing about grain routes, Lord Merrow cleared his throat.

Serali looked up.

She had learned to distrust that sound. Merrow cleared his throat the way other men drew knives: not always dangerously, but never by accident.

“There remains,” he said, “one matter of dynastic continuity.”

Daravan, standing behind Allandra’s left shoulder, went very still.

That was Serali’s first warning.

Allandra’s face did not change.

That was the second.

Merrow drew a folded parchment from the leather case beside him. Several seals hung from its lower edge, red and gold and green, noble houses arranged in wax like a row of watching eyes.

“This petition,” he said, “has been signed by representatives of twelve old families, all loyal to the Crown, all concerned with the long-term stability of the Mantle.”

Yvander’s beard twitched.

Harrek looked down at his notes with the desperate concentration of a man hoping paper might swallow him.

Marielle leaned back in her chair, eyes narrowing.

Verya said nothing.

Serali looked at Allandra.

Only for a heartbeat.

Allandra sat at the head of the table in dark green, one hand resting lightly beside the council docket. She looked calm. Perfectly calm. Queenly in the way statues were queenly, if one forgot statues were carved because flesh had once been too inconvenient.

Through the bond, Serali felt cold.

Not fear.

Not quite.

Something locked.

Merrow continued, encouraged by the fact that no one had yet stopped him. “No one questions Her Highness Princess Everly’s beloved place in the succession.”

Daravan spoke before Allandra could.

“Her Highness is the heir.”

Merrow’s mouth tightened. “Of course.”

“Then the matter of dynastic continuity is settled.”

“Captain, with respect—”

“Use caution,” Daravan said.

The room stilled.

His voice had not risen. That made it worse.

“If this petition implies the princess is unfit because of her sex, then it implies the same of the queen the Mantle chose. That implication would not be merely offensive. It would be treason.”

Merrow paled.

Hagen’s brows lifted faintly, as if someone had finally given the morning a shape worth watching.

“I imply no such thing,” Merrow said quickly. “No such thing at all. Her Majesty’s fitness is beyond question. Princess Everly is a child of exceptional promise. This petition concerns only prudence.”

“Prudence,” Marielle said.

The word sounded filthy in her mouth.

Merrow ignored her. “It is always preferable for the Mantle to have options. History is full of difficult successions made easier when the royal line was not narrowed to one child. The Mantle chooses, yes, but it can only choose from what blood provides.”

Serali’s fingers tightened beneath the table.

Blood.

There it was again. Always blood. Always dressed differently, always arriving with clean hands.

Verya’s voice cut coolly across the chamber. “Does the petition request that Her Majesty name secondary heirs from collateral lines?”

Merrow hesitated. “Not precisely.”

“Then precisely what does it request?”

Another parchment emerged from his case.

This one was narrower.

A list.

Serali knew what it was before he laid it on the table.

She felt Allandra know too.

Merrow smoothed the page with both hands. “Several houses have put forward names of suitable unmarried lords, all of appropriate age, temperament, and lineage. The list is not meant as pressure, Majesty. Only as a demonstration that the nobility stands ready to support whatever match might best serve the realm.”

Allandra looked at the page.

She did not touch it.

“Serve the realm,” she said.

Her voice was mild.

Serali hated it.

Merrow bowed his head. “Your Majesty has borne the weight of grief and rule with admirable strength. None would rush you. But these matters require time. Negotiation. Courtship, if Your Majesty prefers it. And—” He paused delicately.

Too delicately.

Serali’s vision sharpened.

“And?” Allandra said.

Merrow’s eyes flicked to the table, then back up. “And the matter is not one that benefits from indefinite delay.”

No one moved.

The words were soft. Reasonable. Nearly kind.

They made Serali want to overturn the table.

Daravan opened his mouth, no doubt to perform some careful maneuver that would stop the bleeding without naming the wound.

Serali got there first. “Say it plainly.”

Merrow blinked. “I beg your pardon?”

Serali looked at the suitor list. Then at the petition. Then at him.

“Say what you are asking in plain terms.”

Merrow’s brows drew together. “I believe I have been clear.”

“No. You have been polished.”

Hagen’s gaze sharpened.

Allandra turned her head slightly. Not enough to stop her. Not enough to encourage her.

Enough.

A warning, perhaps.

Or fear.

Serali did not know. The bond was full of cold.

She stood.

“Royal Mage,” Verya said quietly.

Serali ignored her.

Merrow stiffened. “This is a matter of royal succession. I do not think—”

“No,” Serali said. “You do not. That is the problem.”

Color rose in his face.

Serali leaned both hands on the table. “You want to breed the queen like a prized mare and call it continuity.”

The room went silent.

Not quiet.

Silent.

Merrow’s face went from pink to white to red in the space of a breath.

“That,” he said, voice shaking, “is a disgusting way to put it.”

“Yes,” Serali said. “It is.”

Allandra did not move.

Serali could not look at her now. If she looked at Allandra, she might see hurt. Or anger. Or worse, gratitude, and then she would lose the line of herself entirely.

So she looked at Merrow.

“You think ugliness disappears when you write it in a better hand. Heirs. Stability. Options for the Mantle. Time-sensitive concern. Suitable lords. They are polished words for the same thing men always mean when they discover a woman’s body can serve a kingdom.”

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

Merrow’s mouth opened.

Serali did not let him speak.

“You are asking when her grief has become inconvenient. When her daughter became insufficient. When her body becomes public property. Which noble house should be allowed to profit from it first. How soon the queen may be reminded that even a crown does not protect a woman from being reduced to what can be taken from her and named duty.”

Yvander had gone very still.

Harrek looked ill.

Daravan’s jaw was clenched so tightly it must have hurt.

Hagen no longer smiled.

Good.

Serali’s voice dropped.

“There is always a noble reason. Bloodline. Peace. Alliance. Continuity. Duty. And somehow the price is always paid inside a woman’s body while men call the receipt governance.”

The silence after that was worse.

Serali became aware of her own breathing.

Too fast.

She had done it now.

Allandra would have to correct her. Verya would have to wrap the damage in legal language. Merrow would call for censure. Hagen would smile and find the weak place. Daravan would say something afterward about precision and timing and where to place the knife.

Then Verya said, “The Royal Mage is correct.”

Serali turned.

Verya sat very straight, hands folded on the docket before her. Her expression had not softened. If anything, it had become colder.

Merrow stared at her. “Lady Verya.”

“The petition concerns marriage, sexual access, pregnancy, succession, and bodily risk,” Verya said. “If council wishes to discuss those matters, it should have the discipline to name them.”

Marielle leaned forward. “And if council’s stability plan requires treating the sovereign as load-bearing livestock, the design is poor.”

Yvander made a strangled sound.

Marielle looked at him. “You may quote me.”

“I would rather not,” Yvander said faintly.

Harrek muttered, “Please do not.”

Merrow looked around the table as if searching for rescue and finding, to his horror, only women.

Allandra had not spoken.

Serali finally looked at her.

The queen sat frozen at the head of the table, one hand still beside the untouched list of suitable lords. Her face was composed, but the bond had changed.

The cold was gone.

In its place was something Serali could not name at first.

Shock, perhaps.

Not at the insult. Not at Merrow’s petition. Allandra had known those would come, someday.

Shock at being defended.

Not her throne. Not her policies. Not the Mantle’s decision.

Her.

The realization struck Serali so hard she nearly sat down.

Allandra’s eyes met hers.

For a heartbeat, the council chamber vanished.

Then Daravan cleared his throat with the timing of a man throwing himself between two armies.

“I second Lady Verya’s recommendation,” he said. “The petition is improperly framed.”

Verya inclined her head. “It will not be entered as council recommendation in its present form.”

Marielle reached for the suitor list.

Merrow slapped one hand over it. “Lady Marielle.”

“I only wanted to improve the air quality.”

“By burning it?”

“Yes.”

“No one is burning anything,” Veryya said.

“Cowardice,” Marielle muttered.

Hagen finally spoke. “How swiftly the room discovers its principles.”

Serali turned toward him.

His gaze rested on Allandra.

“Merrow was clumsy,” Hagen said. “And cruder than he intended.”

Merrow straightened slightly, looking almost relieved.

“That,” Hagen continued, “does not mean the concern vanishes because we have correctly named the ugliness beneath it.”

Veryya regarded him steadily.

“No,” she said. “It doesn’t.”

Hagen inclined his head. “The old families will not abandon succession because this petition failed. They’ll simply learn to draft the next one more carefully. They have been worrying about this quietly for months.”

His eyes met Allandra’s. “This was never the problem.”

“The problem,” he said quietly, “is that they believe they’re protecting the kingdom.”

Veryya folded her hands. “Which is precisely why this petition was useful.”

Hagen’s brow lifted.

“It has shown us the argument before it learned better manners.”

For the first time since Merrow began speaking, Hagen’s smile slipped.

Only for an instant.

Enough.

Serali saw it.

Not agreement. Not approval. Anger.

Carefully folded beneath charm and courtly restraint, where only someone looking for it would find it.

He wasn’t defending Merrow.

He was warning Allandra.

Warning all of them.

The realization landed with surprising force.

She knew that expression.

A few months ago, she would have mistaken it for amusement.

Now she could tell the difference. She disliked that immediately.

It implied she had become accustomed to Prince Hagen. That was an irritating thing to discover about herself.

His smile returned. ”Gentlemen who believe themselves guardians of the realm rarely surrender after a single defeat.”

Marielle nodded gravely. ”And this particular argument has mites.”

Yvander looked pained.

”Must everything become livestock or furniture?”

”Yes,” Marielle said.

Allandra rose.

The room stopped again.

This time, she stood slowly. Deliberately. Not in reaction. Not in defense.

In judgment.

“The petition will not be entered,” she said.

Merrow’s face crumpled. “Majesty—”

“No.”

One word.

Enough.

Allandra’s gaze moved over the council, touching each face in turn.

“My daughter is my heir. The Mantle will have its choice when the time comes, as it always has. Until then, this council will not place my child’s legitimacy beneath the comfort of lords who prefer options to obedience.”

Hagen’s mouth tightened.

Allandra looked down at the suitor list.

“As for this,” she said, “I will not be selecting a husband by petition.”

Marielle murmured, “I’ll have a furnace ready.”

Allandra’s mouth almost moved.

Almost.

“Lord Merrow,” she said.

Merrow swallowed. “Majesty.”

“If the nobles who signed this petition are concerned with the production of heirs, they may begin with their own households.”

Yvander coughed so hard Harrek hit him on the back.

Allandra continued, voice cold and clear. “If they are concerned with stability, they may fund the north wall repairs without complaint. If they are concerned with the Mantle, they may remember that it chose me once and may be trusted to know its own mind better than frightened men with marriage lists.”

Serali felt something fierce and bright move through the bond.

Not heat.

Not desire.

Pride.

Allandra turned the list over with two fingers, as if it were something dead.

“This council is adjourned.”

Merrow remained seated, stunned.

Verya closed her docket.

Marielle snatched the list the instant Allandra stepped away and said, “Evidence,” when Merrow protested.

Daravan moved to Allandra’s side, but his eyes flicked once to Serali.

Not warning this time.

Approval.

Serali sat very slowly.

Her knees had become less reliable than expected.

Across the table, Allandra gathered the petition and placed it beneath her own papers. Her face remained controlled, royal, unassailable.

But the bond trembled.

Serali felt it like a hand pressed briefly to her sternum.

Thank you.

Not words.

Not yet.

But close enough.

Chapter 135: Shadow Mage in White Armor

Allandra made it halfway down the corridor before Hagen caught her.

Of course he did.

He appeared from one of the side galleries with a timing so precise it seemed less like coincidence than architecture. Daravan, still at Allandra’s shoulder, noticed him first and shifted one fraction closer.

Hagen smiled at that.

“Captain,” he said.

“Your Highness.”

“How reliably you appear where the air has recently caught fire.”

Daravan’s expression did not change. “Someone has to check the draperies.”

Allandra did not stop walking. “If you have something to say, say it.”

Hagen fell into step beside her.

For once, he did not begin with a barb.

That was worrying.

“A memorable session,” he said.

Allandra kept her eyes forward. “Merrow will recover.”

“Unfortunately, yes. Men like Merrow are built from wax and complaint. They melt, then reform near the nearest draft.”

Daravan made a quiet sound that might have been agreement.

For several strides, only their footsteps echoed through the corridor.

Then Allandra said, “You sounded as though you were defending him.”

Hagen glanced sideways, genuinely surprised. “Did I?”

“Yes.”

“How unfortunate.”

“Hagen.”

He sighed theatrically. “Merrow scarcely required my assistance embarrassing himself.”

“Then why?”

“Because Merrow wasn’t the important part.”

That caught her attention.

She looked at him.

“The room had already decided he was wrong,” Hagen said. “Lady Veryya dismantled his reasoning. Lady Marielle was halfway to constructing a furnace. Your Royal Mage ensured no one would mistake his petition for courtesy.”

A corner of his mouth twitched. “There seemed little value in becoming the fourth person to inform Merrow he was an idiot.”

“So instead...?”

“I reminded the room that Merrow is merely the first man foolish enough to say it aloud.”

The corridor grew quieter as they rounded the corner.

Courtiers drifted discreetly into adjoining halls, sensing weather.

Only two guards remained at the far archway, concentrating very hard on not overhearing royalty.

“The petition failed,” Hagen continued.

“Yes.”

“The concern did not.”

“No.”

“The old families have been discussing succession since before Harvest.”

Allandra’s grip tightened on the folder in her hands. “I know.”

“No,” Hagen said gently. “I don’t think you do.”

She frowned. “They believe they are protecting the kingdom.”

“That does not excuse them.”

“I wasn’t attempting to excuse them.”

For just a moment, the practiced ease left his expression. “I was warning you not to mistake today’s victory for the end of the argument.”

She held his gaze. “I won’t.”

“I know.”

His smile returned, lighter than before. “They’ll simply find someone with better manners next time.”

They walked a few paces in silence. “They’ll also be more careful next time.”

Allandra looked at him. “Why?”

“Because Merrow is about to leave this palace with an excellent story.”

“A story.”

“The old families adore stories. Facts require thought. Stories merely require repetition.”

His smile returned. “By tomorrow evening, I imagine half the signatories will have heard about the insolent shadow mage who publicly humiliated Lord Merrow.”

“That is not what happened.”

“No.”

He spread his hands lightly. “Which has never prevented a good story.”

He glanced back toward the council chamber. “Give it another telling, and she’ll have become your knight in white armor.”

Daravan’s eyes narrowed.

“…As a shadow mage,” Hagen amended.

The corner of his mouth twitched. “Wrong in every heraldic sense.”

“And yet.”

Silence settled.

“Do not make her into one of your metaphors,” Allandra said quietly.

“I didn’t.”

Hagen’s voice remained calm. “Merrow will.”

Allandra frowned.

Hagen continued, “Not those words, perhaps. He’s not nearly imaginative enough. But he’ll tell them she stood between a queen and a room full of nobles. That she cut him down in public. That she made him look small.”

He met her eyes. “The details will vary. The image won’t.”

“She defended a principle.”

Hagen nodded. “A useful distinction, but Merrow won’t be recounting principles over dinner.”

There was no mockery.

No hidden barb.

Which somehow made Allandra more uncomfortable.

“She was impressive,” Hagen said.

“Too sharp, perhaps. Too willing to make the room bleed before checking whether anyone had laid cloth beneath it.”

His smile returned. “I rather admired it.”

Daravan finally spoke. “So did I.”

“I suspected as much.”

Allandra studied her brother. “What is it you’re trying to tell me?”

His expression sobered. “That Merrow lost.”

“Yes.”

“The men behind him did not.”

The corridor seemed colder. “They’ll remember today.”

“All of us spoke.”

“Yes. Lady Veryya made the argument lawful. Lady Marielle made it unforgettable. You ended the session.”

He paused. “But Serali made the wound.”

Allandra closed her eyes briefly. Of course. “They’ll blame her.”

“They’ll blame the person who forced them to hear themselves.”

She exhaled slowly. “They always do.”

Hagen looked at her for a long moment. “The Mantle chose.”

His voice was almost absent-minded. “As it always does.”

A faint smile returned. “The rest of us simply spend our lives adapting to its decisions.”

It was an ordinary sentence.

Almost.

Allandra had known him too long to mistake it for one.

She heard the old hurt beneath it.

Not accusation.

Not even regret.

Only the quiet acknowledgment that some choices were never entirely finished, no matter how faithfully one accepted them.

“And you?” she asked softly. “Have you adapted?”

His eyes met hers.

For just a moment, the prince disappeared.

There was only her brother.

The boy who had once passed wooden practice swords beneath a locked nursery door because someone had declared that princes learned footwork while princesses learned posture.

He smiled. “I’ve become very convincing.”

The answer told her everything it refused to say.

He stepped back and bowed. “Majesty.”

Then he turned and walked away, amber silk catching the afternoon light, looking every inch the charming prince who had offered a compliment and a caution, and revealed almost nothing of himself.

Daravan waited until Hagen disappeared around the far corner. “I disliked that.”

“So did I.”

“He wasn’t entirely wrong.”

“I know.”

“That makes it worse.”

Allandra nodded. “Yes.”

Behind them, the council chamber doors opened.

She turned before she could stop herself.

Serali emerged with Veryya and Marielle, the suitor list tucked beneath Marielle’s arm like stolen evidence. Veryya was speaking. Serali listened with her head tilted, her expression carefully unreadable. Marielle said something that earned the smallest twitch of Serali’s mouth.

Then Serali looked up.

Across the corridor, their eyes met.

The bond stirred. Gratitude. Shock.

The lingering cold of the council chamber.

The fierce, incredulous ache of being defended.

Daravan made a low sound of warning.

Allandra touched her signet ring.

Serali’s gaze dropped to the movement.

After the briefest pause, she touched the cuff of her left sleeve.

Practice.

Careful.

Deliberate.

Still, for one heartbeat, Hagen’s words settled over the image.

A knight in white armor.

As a shadow mage.

Wrong in every heraldic sense.

And yet.

Serali came through the servants’ passage after midnight.

Allandra had been pretending not to wait.

The pretense had gone poorly.

She had read the same paragraph of Yvander’s grain report six times and retained only the fact that barley, like the nobility, became less useful when damp. She had signed two letters, rejected three petitions, and written a note to Verya instructing her to have Merrow’s suitor list sealed in the council archive before Marielle could “improve the air quality” with a furnace.

Then she had sat in the private sitting room with the lamps lowered and the fire banked, listening to the palace settle around her.

The passage panel opened softly.

Allandra looked up.

Serali stepped through in a dark robe belted over her nightgown, hair loose around her shoulders, expression already defensive.

“You are awake,” she said.

“So are you.”

“I came to return this.”

She held up a folded paper.

Allandra recognized it immediately.

Merrow’s suitor list.

For a moment, Allandra simply stared.

Then she closed her eyes. “Marielle.”

“She said it was evidence.”

“She stole it.”

“She said confiscated.”

“She is not legally empowered to confiscate things from council.”

“She said that sounded like a flaw in the law.”

“Of course she did.”

Serali crossed the room and set the list on Allandra’s desk as if placing a dead insect under glass. “Verya told her to return it. Marielle gave it to me. I believe this is what Daravan calls broadening the concept of procedure.”

Despite herself, Allandra laughed.

It came out too tired, too soft.

Serali’s expression changed.

Not much.

Enough.

Allandra stood and moved toward the desk. “Thank you.”

“I did not bring it because I support its preservation.”

“No.”

“I still think burning it would improve the air.”

“So does Marielle.”

“Marielle is right about many things.”

“She is. We try not to encourage her.”

Serali’s mouth curved faintly.

Then the smile faded.

Allandra looked down at the folded list.

She did not want to touch it.

Names of men she might marry. Houses willing to bind themselves to her bed and call it service. Ages. Bloodlines. Political advantages. Suitability. Temperament. Fertility histories of sisters and mothers, no doubt, if Merrow had been thorough.

A queen reduced to a field to be planted. A widow reduced to unused land.

Allandra’s hand hovered over the paper.

She withdrew it.

Serali noticed.

Of course she did.

“I meant what I said,” Serali said.

The words were quiet.

Allandra turned.

Serali stood near the desk, arms folded tightly over herself, chin lifted as if she expected rebuke even here.

“I know.”

“I made the room worse.”

“Yes.”

Serali blinked.

Allandra continued, “You also made it honest.”

The defensiveness in Serali’s posture shifted, but did not vanish. “That sounds like something Verya would say before adding a penalty.”

“All evidence suggests Verya was on your side.”

“All evidence suggests Verya is on the side of accurate knives.”

“Yes.” Allandra looked back at the list. “Today, that was yours.”

Serali’s gaze dropped.

The fire cracked softly behind them.
