The Queen's Mage

Chapter 86: Domestic Survival

Mara waited in the corridor outside the council chamber with a guard who pretended not to listen.

He stood at attention beside the carved doors, expression fixed, eyes forward. Mara stood a pace behind him, hands folded, posture correct, and listened anyway.

Voices carried through the wood in fragments. Raised tones. A sharper edge than usual. She could not make out words, only cadence; argument, interruption, someone trying to impose order and failing.

She had learned enough of court to recognize the shape of a bad meeting.

The doors opened.

Serali stepped out first.

She did not look at Mara immediately. Her gaze swept the corridor, quick and assessing, as if expecting something to follow her out; an accusation, a command, a chain that had not yet been fastened.

Nothing came.

Only the guard, the corridor, and Mara.

Serali’s shoulders lowered by a fraction.

Mara stepped forward. “My lady.”

Serali’s eyes flicked to her. “You waited.”

“I was told to escort you back.”

“That sounds official.”

“It sounded like an order.”

Serali huffed a breath that might have been a laugh. “Then we should obey it.”

The guard fell in behind them as they walked.

Serali did not speak at first. Her stride was brisk, controlled, the pace of someone who needed movement to keep from saying something irreversible.

Mara matched her without comment.

Halfway down the corridor, Serali said, “Council chambers are just dungeons with better windows.”

Mara glanced at her. “No chains?”

“No chains. No iron. No damp stone. No one standing over me with a knife and an order to make me bleed.”

A beat.

“Still,” Serali added.

Mara did not answer.

She did not need to.

They reached her room. The guard opened the door, stepped aside, and did not follow them in.

Serali paused on the threshold, waiting.

No lock turned behind her.

She stepped inside anyway.

Mara followed and closed the door.

The room was as they had left it; bed, small table, narrow hearth, everything arranged with careful efficiency that tried and failed to feel like comfort. The flowers Mara had set earlier still stood in the blue vase near the hearth, bright and unnecessary.

Serali looked at them as if they were a personal insult.

“Oh,” Mara said.

Serali narrowed her eyes. “What does oh mean?”

“It means the council was unpleasant.”

“That was all in one syllable?”

“Yes.”

“Efficient.”

“You look as if you want to bite someone.”

“Several people.”

Mara set her hands lightly on the back of a chair. “Were they legally biteable?”

“Not according to Verya.”

“That does complicate things.”

Serali crossed the room, pulled the hairpin from her sleeve, and dropped it onto the table with a sharp click.

Mara looked at it.

Then at her.

“You took a weapon to council.”

“It is a hairpin.”

“It is sharpened.”

“Many things are sharpened if you love them enough.”

Mara’s mouth twitched. “Was it necessary?”

“No.”

A pause.

“Did it help?”

“Yes.”

Mara nodded as if this made perfect sense. “Tea?”

“Wine.”

Mara blinked.

Serali sank onto the settee and pressed both hands over her face. “No. Tea. If I drink wine, I may write a legally binding insult to Merrow.”

“I am not sure that is how law works.”

“Neither is Merrow.”

Mara moved to the sideboard. “Honey?”

“Separate.”

“Always.”

Serali lowered her hands and stared at the ceiling.

The suite looked absurd after council. Too peaceful. Too warm. Her study waited through the open archway, half-filled now with Marielle’s diagrams, oath copies, histories, and Mara’s treasonous stack of romances. Everly’s cards leaned against the study lamp, flanking the inkpot like devotional icons to bad advice.

DO GOOD MAGIC.

Serali had done good magic.

Then she had gone to council and nearly set fire to her own appointment with her mouth.

Mara set the tea tray on the low table. “How bad?”

Serali laughed once. “How long do you have?”

“I am assigned to you.”

“That sounds ominous.”

“It means I have time.”

Serali looked at her.

Mara poured the tea and sat in the chair opposite, not quite a servant now and not quite a friend in any way the court would recognize. Something stranger. Something quieter. Something Serali had not named because naming it would make it easier to lose.

“The wall is sabotaged,” Serali said.

Mara’s face changed.

“Not collapsing,” Serali added. “Not today. Not that I know. But the damage is magical. Or partly magical. Imitation work. It looks Lyehiran enough to cause trouble and wrong enough to make everyone argue.”

Mara handed her the tea. “Is that better or worse?”

“Yes.”

Mara accepted this answer with the grim practicality of someone learning court politics by exposure.

“Lady Marielle must be pleased.”

“She is ecstatic in a way that suggests several walls should be warned.”

“That sounds like Lady Marielle.”

“Yvander is worried about money.”

“That sounds like Master Yvander.”

“Harrek is worried about public order.”

“That sounds like Commander Harrek.”

“Merrow remains an upholstered objection.”

Mara’s lips pressed together.

Serali lifted the cup. “You may laugh. He deserves it.”

Mara did not laugh, but she did make a small sound into her sleeve.

“Verya told me my point was worth making,” Serali said.

Mara’s eyes widened.

“And that I made it badly.”

“Oh.”

“There it is again.”

“That seemed like a very large statement.”

“It was. Coming from Verya, I think it was nearly a kiss on both cheeks.”

Mara’s eyes widened further.

“Metaphorically,” Serali said.

“Yes. I assumed.”

“You did not.”

“I mostly did.”

Serali took a sip of tea and made a face. “Too much mint.”

“You always say that.”

“You always use too much.”

“You drink it anyway.”

“Because I am merciful.”

Mara smiled, and the room eased by a fraction.

Then, because nothing easy lasted, she asked, “And Prince Hagen?”

Serali’s fingers tightened around the cup.

Mara saw.

Of course she did.

“He asked if I could identify individual Lyehiran practitioners from spellwork.”

Mara’s expression sobered.

Serali looked down into the tea. Bits of mint turned slowly near the surface.

“I said sometimes.”

“That sounds truthful.”

“It was stupid.”

“Truth often is.”

Serali looked up sharply.

Mara shrugged faintly. “I have been listening.”

“Apparently too well.”

“What did he want?”

“Names.” Serali set the cup down before she cracked it. “Not today. Not directly. Today it was whether I could identify practitioners. Tomorrow it becomes whether one of those practitioners is active. Next week it becomes defensive necessity. Then someone stands in a clean room and asks me to help draw a map of people I used to know.”

Mara was quiet.

Good.

Serali did not want comfort too quickly. Quick comfort was usually made of cloth too thin to survive use.

“They might ask,” Mara said at last. “But the council decided they cannot demand.”

“Councils decide many elegant things before fear teaches them uglier grammar.”

Mara leaned forward slightly. “Then decide before they ask.”

This narrative has been purloined without the author’s approval. Report any appearances on Amazon.

Serali stared at her.

“Decide what?”

“Which useful things you will not do.”

That was not comfort.

It was better.

Serali sat very still.

Mara’s cheeks colored faintly, but she continued. “That may be too simple.”

“It is.”

“Yes.” Mara folded her hands. “But perhaps simple is useful when everything else is trying to become impossible.”

Serali looked toward the study, where the oath copy waited among the diagrams and cards and ridiculous books.

Useful things.

No names.

No personal targeting.

No brother.

No offensive counsel dressed in defensive necessity.

No becoming a map.

Her throat tightened.

“That sounds like law.”

“It sounded like laundry in my head.”

Serali turned back. “Laundry.”

“You sort what can be washed, what must be mended, what is too stained to save, and what belongs to someone else.”

Serali stared at her.

Mara’s cheeks reddened further. “That may not be helpful.”

“No,” Serali said slowly. “It is horrifyingly helpful.”

Mara looked relieved.

“Do not become wise,” Serali warned. “I have enough problems.”

“I will try not to.”

Serali took another sip of tea.

Still too much mint.

Still warm.

Still hers to sweeten or not.

She looked toward the window, beyond the glass, toward the city that was no longer simply enemy and not yet anything like home.

“I do not know what I am now,” she said.

Mara did not rush to answer.

Good woman.

Terrible woman.

After a while, she said, “Royal Mage.”

Serali closed her eyes.

The title sat there, inconvenient and absurd and inked under seal.

Royal Mage.

A fiction with a chair.

A line in law.

A list of things she would not do.

For the moment, it would have to be enough.

Chapter 87: Information, Not Surrender

By the time the main doors opened, Everly had declared war on sleep.

This was not unusual.

Everly considered sleep an insult, bedtime a political conspiracy, and nightclothes a form of soft imprisonment. She had already escaped one nursemaid, hidden beneath Allandra’s writing table, stolen three sugared almonds from the supper tray, and attempted to negotiate an alternative bedtime schedule involving just one more hour repeated until it became less a request than a siege tactic.

Allandra had faced cavalry charges with less exhaustion.

“You are tired,” she said.

Everly stood in the center of Allandra’s private sitting room wearing a white nightgown, one slipper, and an expression of deep royal grievance. Her hair had been brushed into a loose braid that was already failing. She clutched a stuffed fox beneath one arm and a wooden practice dagger beneath the other.

“I am not tired.”

“You are swaying.”

“I am thinking.”

“You are thinking sideways.”

Everly looked down at her own feet as if betrayed by them. “That is different.”

Allandra rubbed the bridge of her nose.

The sitting room was lit warmly, the lamps dimmed to evening gold. A fire burned low in the hearth. Allandra had made the mistake of imagining the evening might contain ten minutes of quiet reflection.

Then Everly had refused to go to bed.

“Bed,” Allandra said.

“No.”

“Everly.”

“No, thank you.”

“That was more polite than usual, but still no.”

There was a knock at the outer doors.

Allandra closed her eyes briefly.

Of course.

“Enter,” she called.

The doors opened to admit a palace guard, Mara just behind him, and Serali between them, carrying a stack of books and looking as if she had prepared herself for something far more orderly than this.

The guard stepped aside once Serali had crossed the threshold. Mara lingered just long enough to give Allandra a small, assessing look, half question, half reassurance, before withdrawing with a quiet curtsy. The doors closed behind her with a soft, final sound.

Allandra knew before she turned.

The bond caught first. Not words. Not thought. Presence. A shadow moving behind the ribs, a cool line through the Heat that had lived beneath Allandra’s skin all day.

Serali.

The old magic answered so quickly that Allandra nearly closed her eyes with the relief of it.

Then she hated herself for the relief.

She turned.

Serali paused inside the room, taking in Allandra, Everly, the slipper situation, the practice dagger, and the stuffed fox.

Her brows lifted. “Am I interrupting a coup?”

Everly spun around.

“Serali!”

Allandra said, “Quietly.”

Everly immediately whispered at full volume, “Serali!”

Serali looked at Allandra. “The coup appears well organized.”

“It has been ongoing for twenty minutes.”

“Longer,” Everly said. “I started before supper.”

“Ambitious,” Serali said.

Everly beamed and ran toward her.

Allandra’s hand moved before thought.

Not to stop Everly. Not quite. But the instinct went through her like a blade: protect, intercept, control the contact, keep Serali from being startled.

She caught herself halfway.

Too late.

Serali saw.

Her eyes flicked to Allandra’s hand, then to her face.

Allandra lowered her arm.

Everly stopped two paces from Serali, apparently remembering herself with heroic effort. “May I hug you?”

Serali’s expression changed.

Only slightly.

“Yes,” she said. “Briefly.”

Everly flung one arm around Serali’s waist with all the restraint of a thrown cushion.

Serali froze for the first breath, then patted the top of Everly’s head with two awkward fingers. The gesture was so stiff, so uncertain, and so determinedly gentle that Allandra felt something in her chest turn over.

Everly stepped back. “That was brief.”

“Improving,” Serali said.

“I am getting better at brief.”

“A useful skill.”

“I am not going to bed.”

“Less useful.”

Everly frowned. “You too?”

“I am Royal Mage. We are known for our wisdom.”

Allandra said, “Provisionally?”

Serali glanced at her. “Verya says no.”

Everly looked impressed. “Verya said no to you?”

“She does often.”

“She says no to everyone.”

“Then at least she is fair.”

Everly brightened. “Can you do magic?”

“Not to prevent bedtime.”

“Why not?”

“Because your mother would object.”

Everly looked at Allandra with renewed hope. “Would you?”

“Yes.”

“But if she was helping me?”

“No.”

“Bad queen.”

“Frequently,” Serali murmured.

Allandra looked at her.

Serali looked back, very innocent.

The Heat sharpened under Allandra’s skin.

Not now.

Not with Everly standing between them in one slipper.

“Everly,” Allandra said, more softly, “bed.”

Everly’s face fell into the particular sorrow of a child tragically denied all joy in the final minutes of life. “But Serali just got here.”

“And Serali has business with me.”

Everly’s eyes narrowed. “Grown-up business?”

“Yes.”

“Boring business?”

Allandra looked at the books in Serali’s arms.

The top one, unfortunately visible, was The Sun King’s Unwilling Heart.

Allandra’s mouth went dry.

Serali shifted the stack quickly.

Too quickly.

Everly craned her neck. “Is that a story?”

“No,” Serali said.

“Yes,” Allandra said at the same time.

Everly brightened.

Serali gave Allandra a look of pure betrayal.

Allandra had no defense. She was too busy not thinking about the title.

Everly pointed at the book. “Can you read it to me?”

“No,” Allandra said.

“Absolutely not,” Serali said.

Everly looked between them, intrigued. “Why?”

“It is very dull,” Allandra said.

“It is extremely educational,” Serali said.

Allandra closed her eyes.

Serali also seemed to realize the error at once.

Everly’s interest became predatory. “Educational?”

“For adults,” Serali said.

“I am almost five.”

“You are four.”

“Almost five later.”

Serali looked to Allandra. “She argues like a councilor.”

“She argues better than several.”

Everly hugged the stuffed fox tighter. “Then I can stay.”

“No,” Allandra said.

Everly opened her mouth.

Allandra knelt before she could begin the next assault, taking her daughter’s free hand. “You may have one story from Lessa, one drink of water, and one candle left burning. Tomorrow, if Serali agrees, you may show her the new drawing.”

Everly turned immediately to Serali. “Do you agree?”

Serali blinked.

Allandra should have expected that. Everly went for the weak point of any negotiation with horrifying instinct.

Serali looked down at Everly. “I agree to inspect the drawing.”

“Not inspect. Admire.”

“I agree to consider admiration.”

Everly seemed to find this legally sufficient.

“Good.” She leaned closer, lowering her voice in a whisper likely audible in the hall. “It has a peacock biting Lord Merrow.”

Serali’s mouth parted.

Allandra put a hand over her eyes.

“Good night, Everly.”

“Good night, Mama.” Everly kissed Allandra’s cheek with dramatic speed, then turned to Serali. “Good night, Serali.”

“Good night.”

“Do not do boring grown-up business too long.”

“No promises,” Serali said.

Everly nodded gravely, then marched toward the inner nursery door, one slipper whispering against the rug and the bare foot slapping softly after it. At the threshold, she turned back.

“Mama?”

“Yes?”

“Do not be too queenly. It makes your forehead angry.”

Serali made a strangled sound.

Allandra looked at the ceiling. “Bed.”

Everly vanished with her fox, her dagger, and her devastating counsel.

The door closed.

Quiet settled.

Not immediately. Everly continued issuing instructions to Lessa in the adjoining room, something about candle placement and the moral deficiencies of socks. Then another door shut, soft and final, and the apartment became still.

Allandra rose slowly.

For a moment, the room was nearly light.

Then Serali’s smile faded.

Allandra braced.

“Lyehira.”

The warmth cooled.

Necessary, then.

Allandra gestured to the chairs. Serali sat first this time. Allandra followed.

The bond settled uneasily between them.

Serali rested one hand on her notebook but did not open it. “Mara has already dragged me through the worst of the panic, so I will spare you the first version.”

“That sounds kind of her.”

“It was not. It was useful. Worse.”

Allandra almost smiled.

Serali looked toward the fire. “Hagen was not wrong to ask.”

Allandra’s smile died.

“No,” Serali said sharply. “Do not make that face. I hate that face.”

“What face?”

“The one that says you are about to turn a complicated thing into a simpler one because you think simple will hurt me less.”

Allandra closed her mouth.

Good.

“If Lyehirans are involved with the wall, my knowledge could matter,” Serali said. “If someone’s spellwork is familiar, I might know it. If enough lives depend on stopping it, someone will eventually ask for names.”

“Yes,” Allandra said.

Serali’s eyes cut to her. “Good. We are being honest.”

“We are trying.”

“I hate Vulmar. I hate Rania. I hate that court. If my father fell off a tower tomorrow, I would not mourn the stone he landed on.”

Allandra’s mouth almost moved.

She restrained it.

“But Lyehira is not only him.”

“No.”

The word came easily.

Because it was true.

Serali looked at her. “You understand that?”

“I understand enough not to argue.”

“Good.”

Allandra folded her hands in her lap and forced herself not to reach for reassurance too quickly.

Serali continued, voice lower. “I am working for your crown now. Your council. Your walls. Your city. I can tell myself it is defensive. I can point to the oath. I can say I am not betraying anyone by refusing Vulmar.”

“You are not betraying Vulmar by refusing him,” Allandra said. “But Lyehira is more than Vulmar. And Avalusia is Lyehira’s enemy. So yes, there may be people who call what you are doing betrayal.”

Serali’s face tightened.

It hurt to say it.

It needed saying.

Allandra continued, “Some of them may not be entirely wrong from where they stand.”

Serali looked away.

“But that is not the whole truth either.”

“No.”

“No.”

Silence.

Then Serali said, “If war comes, they will ask for more.”

“Yes.”

“They will call it defensive necessity.”

“Yes.”

“They will ask for command signatures. Weak points. Names.”

Allandra’s throat tightened. “Some will.”

“You?”

The question struck clean.

Allandra looked at her. “No personal targeting without your consent.”

“That is law.”

“Yes.”

“I am asking you.”

Allandra understood the difference.

“No,” she said. “I will not ask you to hand me your brother.”

Serali went very still.

Allandra continued, each word chosen slowly. “I may ask how to protect Avalusia from a spell. I may ask how to shield a wall, recognize an array, or keep my people alive if Lyehiran magic is used against them. I will not ask you to name Cillian as a target.”

“And if he is the one casting?”

Allandra had known the question would come.

It still hurt.

“Then I will ask how to stop the spell.”

“Not how to kill him?”

“No.”

“What if stopping the spell means killing him?”

Allandra did not answer quickly.

Serali smiled without humor. “There.”

“If that day comes,” Allandra said, “I will not pretend there is a clean answer. But I will not make you the weapon I use against him.”

Serali looked down.

The fire snapped once.

“And if Cillian is sent to retrieve me?” Serali asked.

Allandra’s magic flared before she could stop it.

The lamps brightened.

Serali looked at them.

Allandra closed her eyes. “Damn it.”

“Heat?”

“Protectiveness.”

“Is there a difference?”

“Sometimes.”

Serali’s voice softened by a dangerous degree. “Allandra.”

The queen opened her eyes.

Serali looked tired now. Not physically, though perhaps that too. Tired in the oldest places.

“If he comes for me, I don’t know what I’ll do.”

Allandra wanted to say, You will choose yourself.

She did not.

“I will not decide for you,” Allandra said.

Serali’s eyes lifted.

“And I will not let him take you.”

The words were out before she could make them gentler.

There it was.

Dominant. Sovereign. Protective. Dangerous.

Serali’s expression changed.

Allandra’s stomach dropped. “I don’t mean—”

“No,” Serali said.

Allandra stopped.

Serali leaned back, studying her. “Say what you mean. Then we can decide if it is a problem.”

Allandra laughed once, breathless. “That seems unwise.”

“It is probably healthier than translating everything through guilt.”

Allandra looked down.

“I would stop him,” she said.

“Yes.”

“If he came to take you against your will, I would stop him.”

“Yes.”

“If you wanted to go with him…” The words nearly caught. She forced them through. “Then I would have to decide whether I believed the choice was free.”

Serali’s eyes narrowed. “And if it was?”

Allandra met her gaze.

“Then I would let you go.”

The bond pulled hard enough to ache.

Serali’s lips parted.

Neither moved.

Allandra said, “And it would destroy me.”

The truth stood there.

Unadorned.

Serali looked away first.

“Good,” she said, voice rough.

Allandra blinked.

Serali’s mouth curved without humor. “Not good that it would destroy you. Good that you said it instead of wrapping it in statecraft.”

Allandra nodded once.

They sat with that for a while.

From the adjoining nursery, faintly, Everly’s voice rose in protest about something. A nursemaid murmured. Everly made a sound of deep outrage, then silence returned.

Serali looked toward the door. “She should not have to be near any of this.”

“No.”

“If war comes—”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“Yes.” Allandra’s voice hardened. “Every decision I make begins and ends with the fact that there is a child asleep in the next room who may inherit my mistakes.”

Serali’s face softened.

Allandra looked away before the bond could deepen it into something unbearable.

Then Serali opened her notebook.

“I still want the privacy wards,” she said.

“So do I.”

“Properly this time. Not just enough to survive a council room.”

“Yes.”

“And one more rule.”

Allandra’s pulse quickened despite herself. “One?”

“I cut the list down.”

“How merciful.”

“It hurt me to be efficient.”

“I appreciate the sacrifice.”

Serali looked at the page, then closed the notebook instead of reading from it. “If the Heat becomes too much, we say so. Plainly. As information. Not permission. Not pressure. Not surrender.”

The words settled into the room.

Allandra understood why this one had survived the list.

The rest they had said before in Lia’s infirmary. No sensed desire as permission. No assuming fear meant refusal. No secret suffering dressed as nobility. Those rules still mattered, but they had become practice now. This was different.

This was tonight’s danger.

“All right,” Allandra said.

“And if one of us needs distance, we say that too.”

“Yes.”

“And if one of us does not want distance…”

Serali’s face colored, but she did not look away.

Allandra’s control frayed at the edges.

“Serali.”

“No, don’t say my name like that. This is exactly the point.”

Allandra breathed once.

Then nodded. “You are right.”

“I enjoy when you say that.”

“I am aware.”

“Say it again.”

“No.”

A smile flickered across Serali’s face.

Then the Heat moved again.

Not only Allandra’s this time.

Serali felt it too. Allandra knew because the bond answered: wanting, threaded with embarrassment, fear, curiosity. A question without words.

Allandra gripped the arms of her chair.

Serali watched her hands.

“You’re doing it again,” she said softly.

“Holding still?”

“Punishing yourself for wanting to move.”

Allandra could not answer.

Serali stood.

Allandra’s breath caught.

Serali did not come closer. She walked to the table, gathered the books, then paused with one hand resting on The Sun King’s Unwilling Heart.

“I should go,” she said.

The bond recoiled.

Allandra hated that she felt it.

“Yes,” she said.

Serali looked at her.

“Do you want me to?” she asked.

Plainly.

As agreed.

Allandra’s hand tightened once, then released.

“No.”

Serali’s eyes darkened.

The room went very quiet.

Allandra made herself continue. “But I think if you stay tonight, we will be negotiating with the Heat instead of each other.”

Serali swallowed.

Then nodded.

“Good answer,” she said.

“It does not feel good.”

“No.” Serali lifted the books against her chest. “It feels awful.”

Allandra almost laughed.

It came out as breath.

Serali moved toward the door.

At the threshold, she stopped and turned back.

“Allandra.”

“Yes?”

“If I come tomorrow, and I ask to stay longer…”

The queen’s heart struck hard enough to hurt.

Serali’s face was flushed, frightened, and very steady.

“That will be information,” Serali said. “Not surrender.”

Allandra stood.

Slowly.

“Yes,” she said. “And if I ask you to stay, that will be information. Not command.”

Serali’s mouth trembled into the faintest smile.

“Good.”

She opened the door.

The guard outside straightened. Mara waited in the corridor beyond, discreet as a shadow and twice as knowing.

Allandra felt the distance before Serali stepped through.

The bond pulled, sharp and bright.

Weather.

Not command.

Allandra stood very still as Serali disappeared into the corridor.

The door closed.

The room did not cool.

Allandra remained standing for several breaths, one hand resting on the back of the chair, trying to remember what control felt like before it had to share space with honesty.

From the nursery, Everly murmured in her sleep.

Allandra turned toward the sound.

That, at least, steadied her.

She crossed to the adjoining door and opened it quietly.

Everly lay half outside her blankets, one arm around the stuffed fox, one bare foot sticking out into the cool air. Allandra tucked the blanket back over her and brushed a loose curl from her face.

Her daughter did not wake.

Allandra stood there until the lamps in the sitting room stopped flickering.
