The Golem Mage

Alec didn’t want to waste any more time and quickly explained the two available upgrade options for the stone golem to Agnes.

Though the paths had different costs, but Alec didn’t feel the need to burden her with those petty details as he could afford it and now they could enter the beast forest she could work back that amount for him with the same golems.

He simply believed she had the right to choose the path her golem would follow.

And Agnes chose for Alec to pick different paths for both golems, making him nod in approval, as that was exactly what he had in mind.

Because if it were him, he would want to have both the Stone Guard Golem and the Stone Gunner Golem too, because he believed that leaning too far in one direction would ruin any chance of creating synergy between offense and defense he wanted her to have.

From the names alone, Alec guessed that the Gunner Golem would focus on attack, while the Guard Golem would prioritize defense.

He figured that if Agnes were forced to choose just one path for both golems, she’d end up with golems that were either too defensive or too offensive, creating an imbalance in her strategy.

“No problem, be ready to be dazzled and surprised!” Alec said, as he selected the options for the golems.

Expecting a brilliant flash of light to mark the upgrade, but Alec was puzzled when nothing happened even after waiting for about thirty seconds.

[> Ding!]

[> Materials have been sent to the inventory.]

Alec’s confusion grew when he saw the notification, he quickly opened his system menu and noticed new materials in his inventory that hadn’t been there before.

Realizing something was off, he mentally reached out to the system spirit for clarification.

“What’s going on here?

Normally, I can upgrade my golems with just one click from my thoughts, why the sudden change?” Alec asked in his mind, feeling both stumped and frustrated.

“Well, it’s time for you to learn to get off your training wheels!

After all, you’ve completed all the basic training in golem crafting and have created many golems, why are you getting lazy just because the system helps you automatically evolve them?”

“Lazy bum!

Just know there’s a difference between the system upgrading your golems by itself and helping you evolve ones that don’t belong to you, and hope you were not expecting the system to magically evolve something with her watching that closely “

“ How would you explain that hmm?, in fact the only reason you were assisted in the first place is that it was for your development, and all these materials in the inventory all came from the system shop!, so it’s like you paid for them, Now you’re on your own, so try evolving the golems yourself!” the system spirit snapped back, clearly irritated that Alec had interrupted whatever it had been doing.

“Well, what am I supposed to do?

Even though I have some knowledge, any small mistake on my part could make her lose her golem in the process.”

“ It’s not easy to nurture a golem to this level, not everyone has a system!

I can manage my golems well because I’m completely familiar with their body structure, as I crafted them myself!” Alec shot back heatedly, causing the system spirit to go silent for a moment.

“Still, the system cannot help you right now; you’re all alone, but here’s a piece of advice: don’t underestimate your inspect skill; you should try working with it,” the system spirit replied before its voice completely faded from Alec’s mind.

Agnes, who had been about to speak to Alec as he seemed frozen, just standing there, but she finally saw him move.

He walked toward the two stone golems, his hand resting thoughtfully on his chin as he stared intently at them.

To Agnes, it seemed like Alec was evaluating the golems to determine what was needed for their upgrade.

In her mind, she thought he would definitely go and request something expensive from the instructors, just as he had done before.

She assumed it would be costly, as no resources for upgrading golems in the Mid Rank came cheap.

But she was taken aback when Alec began to materialize various golem resources from thin air.

While she thought he might have stored them in his space ring for later use, witnessing Alec easily summon Earth elemental cores, one-time elemental rune pens, enchanted items, and earth spirit resources made her wonder just how he had gathered such materials.

She was certain that all of these items were extremely valuable, and were of very high quality considering the strong elemental energy radiating around them.

Just standing near those materials, she could feel the potent currents of elemental air swirling in the vicinity.

“Just where are you getting the wealth to acquire all this?

Not even the Gordons flaunt their riches like you do!” Agnes questioned in her mind, reflecting on how Alec had been consistently providing pills, and now it was talismans, and these costly resources.

[> Inspect.]

Alec finally decided to take a chance and use the only skill the system had granted him at the beginning, this time, when the status of the golems appeared, only the chosen paths in the evolution section became visible.

This change grabbed his attention, making him focus more on those evolution paths; and right before his eyes, the two separate tabs for the stone golems transformed, displaying a step-by-step process to help them evolve to the next stage without much hassle.

“Woah!” Alec exclaimed, quickly reading through the detailed instructions.

He was astonished at how thoroughly the usage of all the resources he had summoned was explained, making the process of evolving the golems seem almost effortless.

Without hesitation, Alec got to work.

As he raised both hands, his palms glowing with blue light, and slammed them onto the chests of the two stone golems, channelling a Mana shock of about five thousand units into each of their bodies.

This effort cost him around ten thousand mana, while this would have been a significant toll on his previous self, his new mana pool gave him the confidence to complete the golem upgrade process he had just read.

This was why he chose to work on both golems simultaneously, as they had similar steps with just a little difference.

Agnes watched in awe as Alec materialized earth above his hands in the shape of small rods, and he began to pierce these rods into the joints of both golems, causing their stone forms to break apart and levitate while maintaining their overall shape.

At that moment, Alec plunged his hand into the gaping openings in their chests to remove the cores.

After successfully extracting the old cores, he swapped them for the new Tier 4 Earth cores provided by the system.

As he placed the new cores into their central chests, light returned back to the golems’ eyes.

However, Alec wasn’t finished yet; as he picked up the one-time earth rune pen also provided by the system, after he paid the system point fee.

Alec began to draw the spell runes corresponding to the evolution path on the new cores.

Starting with the core, he continued to etch runes along the levitating bodies, creating defensive and attacking runes based on the instructions from his inspect skill.

In that moment, Alec realized he might actually excel at this.

He effortlessly drew the runes from memory after reading their names, feeling the culmination of all his reading about golems and past failed experiments finally paying off.

The golden light of the runes flowed smoothly from his hand, illuminating the air around him, as Agnes watched his every move in awe.
